Finalizing The Property Health Report Completed In Conjunction With Healthy Homeworks, Lewiston, Sophie Landes, Hermione Zhou
Community Engaged Research Reports
Poor housing conditions in aging housing stocks continue to affect people living in rental units in downtown Lewiston, Maine. Currently, information on multi-family rental units downtown is difficult to access unless you know exactly what you are looking for. The Property Health Report (PHR) is an online database with a goal of increasing access to information on the safety and health information of multi-family rental homes in downtown Lewiston. Invented by local non-profit Healthy Homeworks, the database includes information on registration with the city, active liens, notices of violation, lead inspection data, and other data relating to financial, legal, and …

Community Engaged Research Reports
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the burning of fossil fuels for transportation and electricity, land use and deforestation, agriculture, and industry are causing unprecedented rates of climate change. The climate emergency is intensifying as temperature extremes increase, snow and ice cover declines, and the oceans warm and acidify. The need to mitigate climate change is rapidly increasing and many mitigation efforts focus on the reduction of GHG outputs into the atmosphere, primarily the development of new renewable energy technologies in order to reduce the burning of fossil fuels. While a decreased reliance on fossil fuels is a key climate solution, …

Community Engaged Research Reports
Maine lends itself to many outdoor activities with its varied geography. Many communities around the state have acknowledged this asset and designed trail systems that allow for people to experience the outdoors. In Maine, many trail organizations are nonprofits as it allows them to provide critical services that contribute to economic stability and mobility in surrounding communities without being dependent on local governments (National Council of Nonprofits 2019a). The nonprofit community in Maine has been successful throughout the years in creating a robust and vibrant community of citizens that help protect the environment, educate children, and inform the government (Maine …

Food Waste At Lewiston Middle School, Alex Cullen, Dylan Simon, Anne Trapp
Community Engaged Research Reports
In 2017, 30-40% of all food produced in the United States ended up in landfills and contributed to the country’s carbon footprint. At the same time, 13% of US households were food insecure. In Maine, however, that number rises to 15.7% and in the city of Lewiston, ME, it to 25.2%. Enough of the Lewiston population is affected by food insecurity to make the Lewiston School District eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which guarantees free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of socioeconomic background. As the only middle school in the district, Lewiston Middle School (LMS) receives …

Open Educational Resources
In Fall 2019, the Computational Neuroscience class at Bates College collaborated to begin an open textbook. Eight students across three majors collaborated to present the content they were learning to students who were similar to themselves. This project serves both pedagogical and social goals. By writing for fellow students, we leveraged the power of teaching for learning. By bringing together students of diverse academic backgrounds, we leveraged the power of peer instruction. Finally, by writing in the open, students not only brought their best work forward, but are working to contribute to an open knowledge environment that democratizes information. This …

© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Barth syndrome (BTHS) is an X-linked recessive multisystem disorder caused by mutations in the TAZ gene (TAZ, G 4.5, OMIM 300394) that encodes for the acyltransferase tafazzin. This protein is highly expressed in the heart and plays a significant role in cardiolipin biosynthesis. Heart disease is the major clinical manifestation of BTHS with a high incidence in early life. Although the genetic basis of BTHS and tetralinoleoyl cardiolipin deficiency in BTHS-affected individuals are well-established, downstream metabolic changes in cardiac metabolism are still uncovered. Our study aimed to characterize TAZ-induced metabolic perturbations …

This article aims to briefly understand and evaluate the main external and internal factors that impact directly on human resources development area within the organisations, mainly related to multinational companies. Also, it discusses the various aspects and influences on HRD-(Human Resources Development) such as societal, organisational/local, global, that impacts on costs, environment, regulations, policies, culture, beliefs, technology and values. This research was carried out by way of a literature review. This is important to demonstrate, explain and evaluate the current existent literature about this specific theme covered in this article. Furthermore, through this review we compared previous research on HRD. …
Soil Characteristics Drive Ficaria Verna Abundance And Reproductive Output, Justin P. Kermack, Emily Rauschert
Soil Characteristics Drive Ficaria Verna Abundance And Reproductive Output, Justin P. Kermack, Emily Rauschert
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Lesser celandine (Ficaria verna Huds.), an invasive plant from Europe, is becoming widespread in river valleys throughout the northeastern United States and the Pacific Northwest. Its high rate of asexual bulbil and tuber production creates dense infestations threatening native spring ephemerals. Ficaria verna abundance and reproductive output (seeds, bulbils, and tubers) were examined in invaded transects spanning a disturbance gradient away from a river. Site characteristics (photosynthetically active radiation [PAR], soil pH, moisture, texture, and nutrients) were quantified to examine their roles in plant abundance and reproduction. A larger-scale study examined random transects not specifically chosen based on F. …

Evaluating The Effects Of Bisphenols F And S With Respect To Bisphenol A On Primordial Germ Cell Migration In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Embryos Using Immunofluorescence Microscopy, Siti Sarah Safura, George Roba, Edward A. Freeman
Undergraduate External Publications
Primordial Germ Cell (PGC) migration occurs in early embryonic development and is highly conserved across taxa. PGC migration occurs within the first 24 hours post fertilization (hpf) in zebrafish, making the organism an efficient model for observing the migration pathway. Proper PGC migration is necessary for normal gonad development and, in some species, sex determination. Disruption of this process leads to defects in gonad formation and abnormal sex determination and differentiation. Studies show that endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) disrupt PGC migration in zebrafish. BPA is an estrogenic compound that has been linked to a variety of human …

Fostering Dialogue And Engagement: The Role Of The Catholic Church In Nigeria, Tony Terwase Famave
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
This thesis entitled “Fostering Dialogue and Engagement: The Role of the Catholic Church in Nigeria,” written by Tony Terwase Famave, seeks to address the long-standing misunderstandings between Christians and Muslims that often lead to the wanton destruction of lives, property, and destabilization of the social order, using Vatican II as a model for Nigeria. The ethnic and religious division in the country is further complicated by a Muslim north which is predominantly of the Hausa Fulani tribe and the Christian south which is mostly of the Igbo and Yoruba tribes, with a number of minority tribes counted among the two …

Isolation Of Intact Chloroplast For Sequencing Plastid Genomes Of Five Festuca Species, Md Shofiqul Islam, Gretta L. Buttelmann, Konstantin Chekhovskiy, Taegun Kwon, Malay C. Saha

Isolation of good quality chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) is a challenge in different plant species, although several methods for isolation are known. Attempts were undertaken to isolate cpDNA from Festuca grass species by using available standard protocols; however, they failed due to difficulties separating intact chloroplasts from the polysaccharides, oleoresin, and contaminated nuclear DNA that are present in the crude homogenate. In this study, we present a quick and inexpensive protocol for isolating intact chloroplasts from seven grass varieties/accessions of five Festuca species using a single layer of 30% Percoll solution. This protocol was successful in isolating high quality cpDNA with …
