Modeling Elementary Students’ Ideas About Heredity: A Comparison Of Curricular Interventions, Cory Forbes, Dante Cisterna, Devarati Bhattacharya, Ranu Roy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Learning about heredity is important across the K–12 continuum. However, these ideas may be challenging for students. We examined third-grade students’ ideas about heredity in the context of a new, six-week, model-based science unit that uses corn as a model organism to support students’ ideas about heredity. We analyzed data collected during implementation of the unit, including student artifacts and interviews. We compared these data to those from a pilot version of the curriculum – implemented in the prior year – that was focused on the same disciplinary concepts but was not designed around scientific modeling. Our findings illustrate levels …

Balancing The Demands Of College And Athletics: First-Generation Female Student Athletes’ Perception Of The College Experience, Adrienne Rodriguez

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. The launch of the 1972 Title IX regulation education amendment arrived at a pivotal time for women in sports. “Title IX recognized the uniqueness of intercollegiate athletics by permitting colleges and universities to have separate and equal athletic programs for women” (Hogshead-Makar, & Zimbalist, 2007, p. 2). As more women began to participate in sports, pressures to perform both competitively and academically presented different challenges for female athletes during their collegiate career. For a female student-athletes to be successful in both academics and athletics, the student-athlete must discover a means to sustain a reasonable balance academically and athletically …

Success Profile: A Case Study Of The African-American Women In The President's Office, Pamela Ray

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. Women and minorities have struggled historically in American society due to inequality, racism, and restrictions to advancement, and have turned to education to better their quality of life (Littlefield, 1997; Synnott, 2008). Research indicates there is growing concern about the lack of ethnic minority women at the higher education administrative level, especially for African-American women as the chief executive officer–university/college President (American Council on Education, 2011). Seltzer (2017) has reported no change in the growth of African-American women university/college presidents. The basis for this study is the prevailing lack of information on African-American women’s success factors in leadership …

Understanding Employee Engagement: A Mixed-Methods Study, Joren M. Scharn

Theses & Dissertations

For over 4 decades businesses around the world have been conducting employee satisfaction surveys at regular intervals and this surfaced a strong positive relationship between employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and overall company performance. In recent years however, academics and researchers have reopened the debate on whether employee or job satisfaction metrics are in fact reliable indicators of productivity, suggesting that employee engagement has a far stronger correlation to productivity. This study addresses two interrelated problems that are associated with a practice that is common in working environments all over the world. According to literature, it is generally accepted that (a) …

Using Video And Mobile Applications To Manage Distress Following Acute Copd Exacerbation With Respiratory Failure: A Case Report, Linda Rose Shober

Case Report Posters

Chronic lower respiratory diseases, mainly chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), represent a significant economic burden to the healthcare system and are among the top three leading causes of death in the United States. An acute exacerbation of chronic pulmonary disorder (AECOPD) is a worsening of the respiratory symptoms associated with COPD including dyspnea, increased sputum production, cough, and airway obstruction. Frequent AECOPD influences psychological status and may worsen comorbid anxiety, depression, and increase distress levels. As a result, motivation, mood, and participation in therapy may also be affected. Most exacerbations may be treated effectively on an outpatient basis. A fraction …

A Hip Strengthening Protocol For A Patient Following Achilles Repair: A Case Report, Matthew Morris Dec 2019

A Hip Strengthening Protocol For A Patient Following Achilles Repair: A Case Report, Matthew Morris

Case Report Posters

The Achilles tendon is the most frequently ruptured tendon in the body and rupture most commonly occurs in men ages 30-50. Operative repair has more complications, but lower re-rupture rate, than non-operative management. Early weight-bearing after surgery has been shown to be beneficial. Hip weakness has been associated with lower extremity conditions such as gait deviations, ankle sprains, and knee instability. Previous research has found that individuals with Achilles tendinopathy have hip muscle weakness compared to controls. There is a lack of literature assessing the effect of using a hip strengthening protocol following Achilles repair. The purpose of this case …
