When Stealing Time At Work Seems Justified: The Influence Of Organizational Justice On Time Banditry, Jamey Halleck
When Stealing Time At Work Seems Justified: The Influence Of Organizational Justice On Time Banditry, Jamey Halleck
PhD in Business Administration Dissertations
Interest in the study of time banditry at work is relatively new to researchers. Existing research on this phenomenon has focused primarily on antecedents to the time banditry relationship, such as personality and organizational justice (Brock, Martin, & Buckley, 2013). This study further explored one of those antecedent relationships, the organizational justice to time banditry relationship. Currently absent from the literature is the potential influence each individual factor of organization justice (distributive, procedural, interpersonal, and informational) may have on engagement in time banditry. The focus of the current study was to investigate the following research question: How will engagement in …

A Preliminary Study Using Electropalatography In Second Language Instruction: An Examination Of Formant Frequencies, Summer Ann Price
Theses and Dissertations
The importance of accent reduction to those who are learning English as a second language cannot be understated as it has direct and indirect impacts on credibility and income. This study is an evaluation of an instructional technique involving visual feedback through an electropalatography device to assist speakers in acquiring the /r/ and /l/ sound contrast in American English and whether or not that progress varied across speech task type or word position. This study involved four native Japanese participants in their first semester at the English Language Center located at Brigham Young University. Each subject participated in 7 45-minute …

Characterization Of Bacterial Communities In Biscayne Bay Through Genomic Analysis, Eric Fortman
Characterization Of Bacterial Communities In Biscayne Bay Through Genomic Analysis, Eric Fortman
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Biscayne Bay is a shallow oligotrophic estuary in Southeast Florida. Channelization of rivers, and dredging of canals has greatly altered the historical flow of fresh water into the bay. This, coupled with the rise of a sprawling urban & suburban development, has greatly increased the nutrient load in the bay. This study examined the bacterial community at 14 stations throughout Biscayne Bay —6 stations were located at the mouths of canals; 1 upstream-canal station; 6 stations in the center of the bay; and one ocean influenced station, located near the entrance to the bay. One liter, surface water samples were …

The Economics Of Residential Solar Panels: Comparing Tiered And Time Of Use Plans, Prashanth Nyer, Candace Ybarra, Jack B. Broughton
Business Faculty Articles and Research
This case study uses data from a Southern California Edison residential customer on a grandfathered tiered rate plan to investigate 1) whether it is economically beneficial for the customer to switch from a tiered-rate plan to a Time-of-Use (TOU) plan, 2) whether going solar now makes financial sense for new solar customers, 3) what level of usage offset (the percentage of the customer’s annual electricity consumption that is provided by the solar panels) would result in the maximum financial benefit for the customer under each of the many TOU plans, and 4) whether solar customers on TOU plans can save …

Legal Realism And Legal Doctrine, Dan Priel
Legal Realism And Legal Doctrine, Dan Priel
All Papers
Legal realism is widely perceived to be hostile to legal doctrine. In the familiar narrative, the realists showed that legal doctrine does not, and cannot, constrain judges from using existing legal materials to reach virtually any outcome they want. As such, doctrine only serves to hides and obfuscate what is better discussed openly. The purpose of this essay is to complicate this familiar story. I focus on one contemporary take on legal realism that argues that an open discussion of values will give the law greater determinacy. I counter this view, first, by showing that it does not, in fact, …

Use Of Modified Reineke's Stand Density Index In Predicting Growth And Survival Of Chinese Fir Plantations, Xiongqing Zhang, Quang V. Cao, Lele Lu, Hanchen Wang, Aiguo Duan, Jianguo Zhang
Faculty Publications
Stand density index (SDI) has played an important role in controlling stand stocking and modeling stand development in forest stands. Reineke's SDI (SDI-R) is based on a constant slope of -1.605 for the self-thinning line. For Chinese fir plantations, however, it has been reported that the self-thinning slope varied with site and climate, rendering SDI-R questionable. Remeasured data from 48 plots distributed in Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, and Sichuan provinces were used to develop models for prediction of stand survival and basal area, with SDI-R incorporated as a predictor variable. Also included in the evaluation were growth models based on self-thinning …

Association Of Aspirin Use With Mortality Risk Among Older Adult Participants In The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, And Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial, Holli A. Loomans-Kropp, Paul Pinsky, Yin Cao, Andrew T. Chan, Asad Umar
Open Access Publications
Importance: Aspirin use has been associated with reduced risk of cancer mortality, particularly of the colorectum. However, aspirin efficacy may be influenced by biological characteristics, such as obesity and age. With the increasing prevalence of obesity and conflicting data regarding the effect of aspirin in older adults, understanding the potential association of aspirin use with cancer mortality according to body mass index (BMI) and age is imperative.
Objectives: To investigate the association of aspirin use with risk of all-cause, any cancer, gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, and colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality among older adults and to perform an exploratory analysis of the …

Importance Of Refractory Ligands And Their Photodegradation For Iron Oceanic Inventories And Cycling, Christel Hassler, Damien Cabanes, Sonia Blanco-Ameijeiras, Sylvia G. Sander, Ronald Benner

Iron is an essential micronutrient that limits primary production in up to 40% of the surface ocean and influences carbon dioxide uptake and climate change. Dissolved iron is mostly associated with loosely characterised organic molecules, called ligands, which define key aspects of the iron cycle such as its residence time, distribution and bioavailability to plankton. Models based on in situ ligand distributions and the behaviour of purified compounds include long-lived ligands in the deep ocean, bioreactive ligands in the surface ocean and photochemical processes as important components of the iron cycle. Herein, we further characterise biologically refractory ligands in dissolved …

Operating Room First Case Start Times: A Metric To Assess Systems-Based Practice Milestones?, Christopher Ryan Hoffman, Jay Horrow, Shreyas Ranganna, Michael Stuart Green
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Resident competence in peri-operative care is a reflection on education and cost-efficiency. Inspecting pre-existing operating room metrics for performance outliers may be a potential solution for assessing competence. Statistical correlation of problematic benchmarks may reveal future opportunities for educational intervention.
METHODS: Case-log database review yielded 3071 surgical cases involving residents over the course of 5 years. Surgery anticipated and actual start times were evaluated for delays and residents were assessed using the days of resident training performed at the time of each corresponding case. Other variables recorded included day of week, attending anesthesiologist name, attending surgeon name, patient age, …

Honors Scholar Theses
The purpose of this paper is to present a history of Holocaust education in Connecticut and in the United States of America, evaluate the motives for studying Holocaust education, and explore the content, process and outcomes of Connecticut's Holocaust and genocide education law. Central questions are how has Holocaust education evolved and what does it look like today; what can we learn from the Connecticut law about Holocaust and genocide education; and why teach about the Holocaust? Research methods consist of using several books, academic journals, and public records of legal documents. Relevant texts were gathered and then annotated and …

Gender And Perspective In Eighteenth-Century Women's Travel Writing, Carolyn Stough
Gender And Perspective In Eighteenth-Century Women's Travel Writing, Carolyn Stough
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Gender, class, and nationality have always affected how travelers perceive the people and cultures of the places they visited. This was especially true in the travel writings of eighteenth-century British women. This research is an exploration of the travels of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Jane Vigor, and Lady Elizabeth Craven through their collections of published letters. The gender, class, and nationality of these three aristocratic British women framed how they perceived the people they met throughout their travels through Europe to Russia and Turkey. These women’s backgrounds were reflected through the stories of their travels and their perspectives on the …
Contradictory Shakespeare: An Investigation Of Female Protagonists In Othello, Measure For Measure, And Pericles, Mingyue Xu
Student Theses and Dissertations
Unlike the stereotyped image of women in the Elizabethan era, in which women should submit to men’s control, Desdemona in Othello, Isabella in Measure for Measure, and Marina in Pericles present their powerful and brave characteristics when facing male dominance. More specifically, all three young women — Desdemona, Isabella and Marina — negotiate sexual and marital arrangements with their language intelligently, despite the fact that they sometimes lack self-determining power in the plays. That is to say, Shakespeare gives women rhetorical power while in certain circumstances, men cannot be persuaded. Such contradiction within how Shakespeare depicts his female …
