An Overview Of The Health Delivery System In The State Of Mississippi, Cerlyn K. Ellis Dec 2019

An Overview Of The Health Delivery System In The State Of Mississippi, Cerlyn K. Ellis

Publications and Research

Imagine residing in a high-income country that doesn’t provide access to necessary healthcare. The state of Mississippi remains one of the poorest states in the United States. This has resulted in poor health outcomes and chronic access barriers. Residents of Mississippi ranks poorly in most health indicators, including Infectious Disease, Infant Mortality, Clinic Care, Obesity, Diabetes, and Premature Death.

With half of all rural hospitals in Mississippi threatened with closure, access and quality of care barriers will become more challenging to resolve. This comes partly as a result of the state largely governed by Republicans and the legislators refusing to …

How Sexual Preference Is Related To Victimization Of Dating Violence, Karley Wilson, Lexi Tyler, Madeline Kuchan

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Intimate Partner Violence is a serious and detrimental public health issue that impacts millions of Americans each year. According to National Statistics, nearly 20 Americans per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner (NCADV, 2019). IPV includes actions such as domestic violence (hitting, slapping, shoving), stalking, and rape. Although there is extensive research on the overall subject, a small amount of research has looked at the relationship between sexual minorities and dating violence. The research we conducted analyzed the correlation between sexual preference and victimization of dating violence. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS online program. Results …

BACKGROUND: Observational research suggests that combined therapy with Vitamin C, thiamine and hydrocortisone may reduce mortality in patients with septic shock.

METHODS AND DESIGN: The Vitamin C, Thiamine and Steroids in Sepsis (VICTAS) trial is a multicenter, double-blind, adaptive sample size, randomized, placebo-controlled trial designed to test the efficacy of combination therapy with vitamin C (1.5 g), thiamine (100 mg), and hydrocortisone (50 mg) given every 6 h for up to 16 doses in patients with respiratory or circulatory dysfunction (or both) resulting from sepsis. The primary outcome is ventilator- and vasopressor-free days with mortality as the key secondary outcome. …

Individual Based Model To Simulate The Evolution Of Insecticide Resistance, William B. Jamieson Dec 2019

Individual Based Model To Simulate The Evolution Of Insecticide Resistance, William B. Jamieson

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Insecticides play a critical role in agricultural productivity. However, insecticides impose selective pressures on insect populations, so the Darwinian principles of natural selection predict that resistance to the insecticide is likely to form in the insect populations. Insecticide resistance, in turn, severely reduces the utility of the insecticides being used. Thus there is a strong economic incentive to reduce the rate of resistance evolution. Moreover, resistance evolution represents an example of evolution under novel selective pressures, so its study contributes to the fundamental understanding of evolutionary theory.

Insecticide resistance often represents a complex interplay of multiple fitness trade-offs for individual …

Human Adaptability For Deep Space Missions: An Exploratory Study, Paul T. Bartone, Robert R. Roland, Jocelyn V. Bartone, Gerald P. Krueger, Albert A. Sciarretta, Bjorn Helge Johnsen Dec 2019

Human Adaptability For Deep Space Missions: An Exploratory Study, Paul T. Bartone, Robert R. Roland, Jocelyn V. Bartone, Gerald P. Krueger, Albert A. Sciarretta, Bjorn Helge Johnsen

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

The present qualitative study conducts in-depth interviews with astronauts and other subject matter experts in order to shed light on human adaptability in extreme environments. Deep space travel will entail a range of highly stressful conditions to which astronauts must adapt. Feelings of isolation will be increased, as the space traveler is farther from Earth for longer periods of time. Daily life will take place in small and confined areas, for durations extending into years. The dangers of the extreme environment of space are ever-present, and failure of critical equipment or components can lead to death. Astronauts will need to …

Vertical Electrical Impedance Measurements Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Jared Scott Baxter Dec 2019

Vertical Electrical Impedance Measurements Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Jared Scott Baxter

Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on the creation, validation, automation, and deployment of a nondestructive vertical electrical impedance (VEI) bridge deck assessment apparatus. A multichannel impedance analyzer with a moving platform is developed that can assess the deterioration state of a bridge deck without stationary traffic control. The multichannel apparatus is capable of taking over 500 impedance samples a second and can scan a bridge deck over 500 times faster than more traditional techniques. This research also shows VEI measurements are inversely proportional to the diffusivity of ions through concrete and that an impedance measurement frequency of 25 kHz is the most …

Coordinated Persistent Homology And An Application To Seismology, Nickolas Brenten Callor Dec 2019

Coordinated Persistent Homology And An Application To Seismology, Nickolas Brenten Callor

Theses and Dissertations

The theory of persistent homology (PH), introduced by Edelsbrunner, Letscher, and Zomorodian in [1], provides a framework for extracting topological information from experimental data. This framework was then expanded by Carlsson and Zomorodian in [2] to allow for multiple parameters of analysis with the theory of multidimensional persistent homology (MPH). This particular generalization is considerably more difficult to compute and to apply than its predecessor. We introduce an intermediate theory, coordinated persistent homology (CPH), that allows for multiple parameters while still preserving the clarity and coherence of PH. In addition to introducing the basic theory, we provide a polynomial time …

Performance Of 18 Fresh Market And Eight Saladette Tomato Cultivars In Southwest Michigan In 2019, Ron G. Goldy

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

It was again a difficult year for growing tomatoes at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center. Rain shortly after field planting induced early bacterial disease infection, leading to defoliation and decreased fruit quality. The best performers in the fresh market trial were Red Snapper, Camaro, Saybrook, Jolene, and Myrtle. It was difficult to get good separation in the saladette trial. No entries rose above the others.

Evaluation Of Transplant Root Length On Bell Pepper Yield And Quality, Ron G. Goldy Dec 2019

Evaluation Of Transplant Root Length On Bell Pepper Yield And Quality, Ron G. Goldy

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Allowing bell pepper transplants to develop a taproot system was detrimental to early plant growth. However, it did not have a significant detrimental effect on most fruit yield and quality parameters measured, and by final harvest, plants of all three root length treatments had similar above ground plant weights.

Resonant Configurations In Scalar Field Theories: Can Some Oscillons Live Forever?, Marcelo Gleiser, Max Krackow Dec 2019

Resonant Configurations In Scalar Field Theories: Can Some Oscillons Live Forever?, Marcelo Gleiser, Max Krackow

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the longevity of oscillons numerically, paying particular attention to radially symmetric oscillons that have been conjectured to have an infinitely long lifetime. In two spatial dimensions, oscillons have not been seen to decay. In three spatial dimensions, specific initial Gaussian configurations seem to lead to oscillons with spikes in lifetime that have been conjectured to be infinite. We study such "resonant" oscillons in two and three spatial dimensions, applying two tests to study their longevity: Parametric resonance and virialization. Without offering a formal proof, our numerical results offer support for the conjecture that, in both dimensions, resonant oscillons …

Income Disparities Between Levels Of Management Within The Workplace In The Us, Cerlyn K. Ellis Dec 2019

Income Disparities Between Levels Of Management Within The Workplace In The Us, Cerlyn K. Ellis

Publications and Research

The continuous rise of inequality particularly in the growing concentration of income at the top level of distribution in the United States has become a great focus of assessment for economists and policy makers. Skilled workers struggle to improve their income compensation by integrating higher level of schooling with on-the-job experience to boost their opportunity and gain the edge in this competitive labor market. Understanding the factors behind this phenomenon is essential to determine whether policy action is needed to reduce income inequality while taking into account other policy objectives. Since the problem won’t be solved without understanding the origin …

Rain Gardens: The Return Of Ecosystem Services, Katie Dehaan Dec 2019

Rain Gardens: The Return Of Ecosystem Services, Katie Dehaan

Honors Theses

In the modern world impervious surfaces, especially in urban areas, abound. These include roads, highways, sidewalks, parking lots, and roofs that have replaced permeable surfaces, mainly open land, forests, and wetlands. Rainwater runs off of these surfaces collecting pollutants on its way to permeable areas. Rain gardens collect and process rainwater. Native plants with deep root systems process large volumes of rainwater and the microorganisms living in the soils and roots can process pollutants. The purpose of my research was to find out what variables affect species presence or absence in rain gardens. Species presence or absence at the time …

Katipunan

Development And Validation Of Wearable Systems For Human Postural Sway Analysis, Michael Pollind Dec 2019

Development And Validation Of Wearable Systems For Human Postural Sway Analysis, Michael Pollind

Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses

Falls are the most common cause of injury in older adults. Around one-third of senior citizens (aged 65 or over) experience at least one fall per year, and the frequency increases by 66 percent for those aged over 85 years. Nowadays wearable systems are gaining popularity to perform fall risk assessments and investigating fall events in natural environments. However all commercially existing systems are expensive, thus there is paucity of knowledge to develop and validate inexpensive wearable systems for fall risk assessment in older adults. An early risk of fall assessment could help health care professionals to intervene earlier. This …

Origins, Zoey M. Perse

Theses

Origins are beginnings. Everyone has an origin, a point from which their path brought them to the person that they are today. Some origins are from birth and lead in winding lines to a person’s present. Some origins come after birth and may take the form of an event, person or place that touched a life and drastically affected their path, pushing or pulling them to become an entirely different person than would have otherwise come about.

My own origin was the moment I was given into the arms of my adoptive parents. I was wrapped in layers of clothes, …
