Role Of Stakeholder Communication In Sustainability Of Indonesia's Conservation Area, Indriyati Kamil, Oekan Abdullah, Herlina Agustin, Iriana Bakti
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Indonesia's environmental policy in the conservation area is carried out by establishing the nature reserve as the highest conservation area in addition to wildlife reserves. The high level of damage in the nature reserve area requires collaboration integrated multi-party. Therefore, preservation activities of nature reserves require stakeholder involvement and multi-stakeholder communication in conservation area management. This study aims to: 1) identify the roles and relationships of stakeholders in preserving the nature reserve area 2) formulating a communication model suitable for conservation of the nature reserve. The research method uses survey methods with qualitative and quantitative descriptive approaches obtained from secondary …

Pesticide Seed Treatments Containing Neonicotinoids Have Limited Effect On Soil Microbial Community Structure Under Different Tillage Regimes, Jessica E. Mackay, Richard G. Smith, Jessica G. Ernakovich, Lukas T. Bernhardt
Pesticide Seed Treatments Containing Neonicotinoids Have Limited Effect On Soil Microbial Community Structure Under Different Tillage Regimes, Jessica E. Mackay, Richard G. Smith, Jessica G. Ernakovich, Lukas T. Bernhardt
Faculty Publications
Pesticide seed treatments (PST) which contain fungicides and insecticides are commonly used in agriculture; however, little is known about their effect on soil microbial communities and soil health. Neonicotinoids – controversial insecticides which are common in PST – have received criticism due to potential non-target effects. While fungal pathogens need to be moderated, PST have the potential to disturb broader fungal communities which could lead to reduced nutrient cycling and poor soil health. Given the broad use of PST, their effect on soil fungi needs to be studied within the context of other agricultural management practices. For example, tillage regimes …
A Study Of Veteran Student Persistence And Va Educational Benefits: 2010 National Survey Of Veterans, Scott Schneider
A Study Of Veteran Student Persistence And Va Educational Benefits: 2010 National Survey Of Veterans, Scott Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
Student persistence in college has been a challenge since higher education began. One driving factor affecting a student’s ability to remain in college is that of finances. As life circumstances change, so do the financial resources required to support daily living and as these resources become scarce, a student’s ability to pay for college is negatively impacted, often resulting in a student’s inability to complete their degree. One specific group of students, military veterans, are entitled to educational benefits than can lessen the impact of financial stressors associated with attending a college or university. While no apparent formal reporting requirement …

Efficiency Fast-Moving Drug Plan With Reorder Point Intervention At A Private Hospital In Bandung, Aisha K. Nur, Angga P. Kautsar, Indah L. Hilmi, Rizky Abdulah
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Drug supplies are the major portion of the hospital expenses. The rising of drugs cost directly affect the total expenses of the hospital. Thus, their procurement, especially for fast-moving drugs, should be managed effectively. This study aimed to examine the efficiency of fast-moving drug plan after reorder point (ROP) intervention at a private hospital in Bandung. We conducted a pre-experimental study and used turn-over ratio (TOR) as a parameter. Data were taken from the stock of antibiotics in May-June of 2013 and May-June 2014. Cost components were collected; included the amount of stock, the cost of goods sold, and daily …

“Technology Is Great, But It’S Really Time-Consuming:” Understanding Students’ Digital Academic Lives, Mariana Regalado, Maura A. Smale
Publications and Research
Digital technology has become integral to higher education, incorporated by colleges and universities into teaching, student support and operations. We know that undergraduates lead busy lives, especially those attending commuter universities, and that they bring their prior experiences with technology with them into their college careers. However, while technology access and use in our everyday lives and workplaces has increased in the past few decades, it is not as ubiquitous as we might wish, and our students do encounter barriers to learning and connecting with digital technologies.
We draw on our decade of research on the experiences of CUNY undergraduate …
A Desire Fulfillment Theory Of Digital Game Enjoyment, Owen M. Schaffer
A Desire Fulfillment Theory Of Digital Game Enjoyment, Owen M. Schaffer
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Empirical research on what makes digital games enjoyable is critical for practitioners who want to design for enjoyment, including for Game Design, Gamification, and Serious Games. But existing theories of what leads to digital game enjoyment have been incomplete or lacking in empirical support showing their impact on enjoyment.
Desire Fulfillment Theory is proposed as a new theory of what leads to digital game enjoyment and tested through research with people who have recently played a digital game. This theory builds on three established theories: Expectancy Disconfirmation Theory, Theory of Basic Human Desires, and Flow Theory. These three theories are …
Democracy, Participation, And Information: Complementarity Between Political And Economic Institutions, Thomas Christiano
Democracy, Participation, And Information: Complementarity Between Political And Economic Institutions, Thomas Christiano
San Diego Law Review
In this Article, I will first lay out what I describe as the crude Downsian approach to political democracy and the skepticism about democracy that this has generated. Then, I will lay out some basic problems with this approach and show how the skepticism is not warranted. I will then embark on the task of developing an alternative Downsian approach to political democracy that I think is truer to Downs’s view and that is more sophisticated and interesting. This will include a brief sketch of motivation, and an account of the economics of information in politics. I will then try …
Choose Your Words Wisely: Descriptions Of A Professional Early Childhood Practitioner, Ayooluwa Oke, Judith E. Butler, Cian O'Neill
Choose Your Words Wisely: Descriptions Of A Professional Early Childhood Practitioner, Ayooluwa Oke, Judith E. Butler, Cian O'Neill
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to understand the components that determine quality early childhood education and Care (ECEC) from the views of practitioners and parents participating in the ECCE Scheme (2010). A major component of quality ECCE as identified by practitioners in this study related to professionalism in ECEC. This paper presents a critical view on traditional perspectives on what it means to be a professional within the context of ECCE. It seems that within the ECCE model, a professional practitioner is one who finds purpose in their work. However, they are also experts in ECCE. That is, a …
A Male-Female Genotype-By-Genotype Interaction Mediates The Effect Of Mating On Female Immunity In Decorated Crickets, Kylie J. Hampton
A Male-Female Genotype-By-Genotype Interaction Mediates The Effect Of Mating On Female Immunity In Decorated Crickets, Kylie J. Hampton
Theses and Dissertations
Sexually antagonistic coevolution should lead to the rapid divergence of male and female genotypes related to the effects of ejaculatory substances on female physiology. Hence, the outcome of mating should depend on an interaction between male and female genotypes. Although mating has been shown to influence female immune responses in diverse insect taxa, a male-female genotype-by-genotype effect on female immunity post-mating remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate both the effects of mating on female immunity and the potential for a male-by-female genotype interaction on the form and magnitude of this response in decorated crickets. Females from three distinct genotypic backgrounds …
Reconstructing Energy Flow Through Modern And Historical Marine Communities: Insights From Amino Acid Isotope Analysis, Emma A. Elliott Smith
Reconstructing Energy Flow Through Modern And Historical Marine Communities: Insights From Amino Acid Isotope Analysis, Emma A. Elliott Smith
Biology ETDs
The fundamental currency of life is energy. Organisms need energy to grow, to survive and to reproduce. Understanding the acquisition of energy by consumers is thus a foundational aspect of biological research. This is especially important in the modern era, as impacts of ongoing anthropogenic effects will be mediated or amplified through food webs. Here, I explore how isotopic analysis of individual amino acids – a technique new to ecological studies – can be used to trace energy flow through animal communities in modern and ancient time periods. In particular, I focus on kelp forest food webs, which are nearshore …
The Taxation Without Representation Of Undocumented Immigrants: Counting Unlawfully Earned Tax Dollars While Intentionally Ignoring Unlawful Presence, María Fernanda Alfaro
The Taxation Without Representation Of Undocumented Immigrants: Counting Unlawfully Earned Tax Dollars While Intentionally Ignoring Unlawful Presence, María Fernanda Alfaro
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Federal law mandates that wage earning undocumented immigrants pay taxes. Like all U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents, undocumented immigrants are not exempt from tax obligations solely because of their immigration status in the country. It seems like federal immigration laws are punishing undocumented immigrants for their unlawful presence in the United States, while federal tax laws praise and encourage their continued tax reporting. The Supreme Court’s opinion in Department of Commerce v. New York effectively ended the attempt to get a citizenship question on the 2020 Census, but it by no means closed the door on future attempts. Even …

Adverse Drug Reactions In Hospitalized-Geriatric Patients With Hypertension, Andi I. Julianti, Lia Amalia, Sri Hartini
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) occur often in geriatric patients due to various factors which include a decrease in the physiological function and organs, nutritional deficiencies, multipathology, and polypharmacy. This study aimed to identify and analyse ADRs of hospitalized-geriatric patients with hypertension. We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study (August 2012 to January 2013). Probability determination was calculated by the Naranjo scale. The subjects on this study were hospitalized-geriatric patients (n=86, 46.51% male, and 53.48% female). Thirty-one patients (11 men and 20 women) participated in this study by completing questionnaires to calculate ADRs probability using the Naranjo scale. The probability results were …

Strange, Taran Grant, Edmund D. Brodie Jr., Edmund D. Brodie Jr.
Biology Faculty Publications
Tetrodotoxin (TTX), one of the most toxic substances in nature, is present in bacteria, invertebrates, fishes, and amphibians. Marine organisms seem to bioaccumulate TTX from their food or acquire it from symbiotic bacteria, but its origin in amphibians is unclear. Taricha granulosa can exhibit high TTX levels, presumably concentrated in skin poison glands, acting as an agent of selection upon predatory garter snakes (Thamnophis). This co-evolutionary arms race induces variation in T. granulosa TTX levels, from very high to undetectable. Using morphology and biochemistry, we investigated differences in toxin localization and quality between two populations at the extremes …

Lidar Assessment To Monitor Bridge Response Under Live And Dead Loads, Daniel Watson
Lidar Assessment To Monitor Bridge Response Under Live And Dead Loads, Daniel Watson
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Understanding how a bridge structure responds to various loads in a time and resource-efficient approach is vital in characterizing bridge health. Bridge health monitoring is an evaluation of the structural condition and performance, which optimizes limited transportation budgets by prioritizing the bridges that are in the most need for retrofit or replacement. Identifying and remedying issues will mitigate long-term problems and ensure that the bridge remains open to service for all legal loads. In contrast, health monitoring and load rating will determine if a bridge can only carry traffic up to a certain weight or speed, requiring a bridge load …

Unfamiliar Territory: A Preliminary Exploration Of The Experiences Of International Junior Transfer Students, Nicole Mcintyre
Unfamiliar Territory: A Preliminary Exploration Of The Experiences Of International Junior Transfer Students, Nicole Mcintyre
Master's Theses
Over one million international students attend American institutions of higher education each year. For many of these students, community colleges are an accessible and increasingly popular enrollment option because they offer small class sizes, intensive English language courses, and affordable tuition costs. Many international students enrolled in community college seek to transfer to a four-year university and complete a Bachelor’s degree. To date, the experiences of international students who successfully complete this transfer pathway have gone largely unstudied. As a result, very little is known about the international junior transfer population. This qualitative study utilizes a phenomenology methodology to explore …
Religious Sister Educators: A Narrative Study Through A Feminist Lens, Lisa Peluso
Religious Sister Educators: A Narrative Study Through A Feminist Lens, Lisa Peluso
Theses & Dissertations
Through the dedicated labor of women religious, the Catholic school system represents the largest private system both nationally and internationally (Arthur, 2005; United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, 2016). Once the backbone of American parochial schools, the presence of religious sister educators within Catholic schools has become an increasingly rare occurrence. Using a theoretical framework based on feminist theory and rooted in the concepts of oppression and identity, this dissertation study examines the personal, religious formation, and professional experiences of two retired religious sister educators who successfully devoted over four decades to the mission of Catholic education as they navigated …
