Humanitarian Aid In Haiti: Friend Or Foe?, Samantha L. Tamplin Dec 2019

Humanitarian Aid In Haiti: Friend Or Foe?, Samantha L. Tamplin

Honors Theses

Humanitarian aid to Haiti has both positive and negative effects on a country that is already in a state of turmoil. Considering the aspects of education, economics, and the political climate in Haiti, and after conducting both academic research and primary source interviews from those affected firsthand by these issues, I concluded that outside aid and volunteerism to Haiti, and other third-world countries like it, is ultimately ineffective. Donations coming into Haiti are doing more harm than good because the amount of goods being gathered and shipped to Haiti combined with the instability and corruption of the government in that …

Homo Sum: The Metaphysical Anthropology Of Liberalism, Arthur Martin Dec 2019

Homo Sum: The Metaphysical Anthropology Of Liberalism, Arthur Martin

Honors Theses

This study takes a critical look at the work of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in relation to Patrick Deneen’s first anthropological assumption of Liberalism, presented in his book, Why Liberalism Failed. Deneen claims that Liberalism conceives of human persons as naturally separate and non-relational. Man is not a ζῷον πολιτικόν (Politikon Zoon or Political animal) in Liberalism. Human persons are not the kinds of being that thrive in interpersonal relationships but are by nature isolated and come together for limited self-interested purposes. The main work of this paper includes an attempt to flesh out Hobbes’, …

The Perceptions Of Advocacy Behaviors In End-Of-Life Nursing Care Among Novice, Experienced And Expert Nurses, Karen W. Thacker Dec 2019

The Perceptions Of Advocacy Behaviors In End-Of-Life Nursing Care Among Novice, Experienced And Expert Nurses, Karen W. Thacker

Dissertations

Nurses have difficulty describing the steps of advocacy to guide practice. In order to improve the status of end-of-life care, nurse educators need to be cognizant of the advocate role in nursing practice. The purpose of this comparative descriptive study was to describe nurses' perceptions of advocacy behaviors in end-of-life nursing practice. The novice to expert process and the seven domains of a caring practice as they relate to advocacy behaviors (Benner, 1984) provided a framework in which the nurse can move towards becoming an effective patient advocate.

The purpose of this study was to describe hope as defined and experienced by adults with advanced stage cancer, evidencing high levels of hope. This descriptive, longitudinal research study used the technique of methodological triangulation (semistructured interview, Stoner Hope Scale, Ferrans & Powers Quality of Life Index, Visual Analogue Scales, …

No research was found that explored the effect of organizational climate, role ambiguity, role conflict, and nurse faculty work role balance on faculty organizational commitment and turnover intention. The purpose of this study was to examine how organizational commitment and turnover intention are influenced by organizational climate, role …

Examining The Relationship Of Exercise And Sleep In Students Across Multiple Academic Disciplines, Taylor Zewe

Honors Projects

Students in college learn the importance of balancing their academic studies with their sleep and exercise habits. The amount of sleep and exercise a student recieves has been examined in previous research studies. In these studies it was found that exercise had a postive affect on the amount of sleep received. However, there is little research on the affect academic discipline has on sleep habits and/or exercise habits of students in college. The purpose of this study is to examine the sleep and exercise habits among students in multiple academic majors at Bowling Green State University.

Students, in particular, are vulnerable to this hazard as most face a moderate to extreme amount of stress. The programs which colleges and universities have put into place are outdated. Ineffective treatment of mental health crises leads to disastrous consequences. The present study analyzed the effects of major and grade level on stress level and sources of stress for undergraduate universities at both a large, public university and a small, private college. The author found that a student’s grade level and choice of …

Theory Based And Tailored Dental Messages For Children And Parents: Developing A Framework For A Brief Behavioral Intervention In Clinical And Non-Clinical Settings, Julia Mainelli Dec 2019

Theory Based And Tailored Dental Messages For Children And Parents: Developing A Framework For A Brief Behavioral Intervention In Clinical And Non-Clinical Settings, Julia Mainelli

Honors Scholar Theses

Dental caries are highly prevalent worldwide, across all age and race/ethnicity groups. A relationship between caries and obesity has been found, with overall diet quality being one factor linking this relationship. The need for widespread changes in behavior regarding oral care and nutrition behaviors among youth is evident. These behaviors are not only determinants for dental health but overall health. The variation in self-reported behaviors and liking using a rapid diet and lifestyle screener, the Pediatric Adapted Liking Survey, provides opportunity for the provision of tailored messages. Literature signifies that these are most efficacious when they are theory based, leading …

Prognostic Nomogram For Bladder Cancer With Brain Metastases: A National Cancer Database Analysis., Zhixian Yao, Zhong Zheng, Wu Ke, Renjie Wang, Xingyu Mu, Feng Sun, Xiang Wang, Shivank Garg, Wenyin Shi, Yinyan He, Zhihong Liu

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to establish and validate a nomogram for predicting brain metastasis in patients with bladder cancer (BCa) and assess various treatment modalities using a primary cohort comprising 234 patients with clinicopathologically-confirmed BCa from 2004 to 2015 in the National Cancer Database.

METHODS: Machine learning method and Cox model were used for nomogram construction. For BCa patients with brain metastasis, surgery of the primary site, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, palliative care, brain confinement of metastatic sites, and the Charlson/Deyo Score were predictive features identified for building the nomogram.

RESULTS: For the original 169 patients considered in the model, the …

The United Nations (UN) plays a central role in realizing human rights to advance global health. Looking beyond state obligations, the UN has called on all its specialized agencies to mainstream human rights across all their activities. With globalization compelling these UN institutions to meet an expanding set of global challenges to underlying determinants of health, human rights are guiding these international organizations in addressing public health. These international organizations within the UN system are actively engaged in implementing health-related human rights—in both their mission and their actions to carry out that mission. Through this mainstreaming of human rights, global …
