Understanding Assistance In Dying: Arguments In Favor Of The End Of Life Option Act, Malgorzata Hausdorff

Culture, Society, and Praxis

Abstract

There are many people in our society who are profoundly uncomfortable with the legalization of physician assistance in dying, previously known as physician - assisted suicide. The End of Life Option Act is designed to help people who are dying, who have no realistic chance for meaningful improvement of their health, and who are senselessly suffering from their condition.

There are misconceptions regarding assisting in dying is the terminology itself. Article discusses the law, as well as, clarifies the vocabulary related to the topic.

In conclusion the article raises the question: Is neglecting suffering consistent with the healers ethics?

And They Shall Be Men: An Original Anthology & Analysis Of The Modern Male Bildungsroman, Margaret Cox Dec 2019

And They Shall Be Men: An Original Anthology & Analysis Of The Modern Male Bildungsroman, Margaret Cox

Senior Honors Theses

The stories that boys have been told about what it means to be a man change throughout history. This study considers the postmodern effect of masculinities, female empowerment, as well as the canon of Western bildungsroman in an attempt to understand how the narratives have changed over the past 50 years. Additionally, an anthology of original fiction illustrates how universal stories persist within the changing social narratives.

Experiences Of Girls And Mentors With An Urban Kenyan Afterschool Support Program, Benta A. Abuya, Nelson Muhia, Peter Mokaya

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This article explores the experiences of female mentees and their mentors in an afterschool support program in two informal urban settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. We sought the perspectives of mentees and mentors to identify what has changed concerning the education and social lives of the girls because of this education intervention. Data come from a qualitative component of the midterm survey collected in May 2014 using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The results show improvements in the English and math courses in which support with homework was given; girls were motivated to stay in school and had a higher …

An Auction-Based Marketplace For Notifications Delivery, Rio Akasaka

Defensive Publications Series

A notification delivery module is described that enables a computing system to selectively deliver notifications to a user. The notification delivery module may set a total budget (e.g., a total number of notifications a user may receive for a week) for the user based on prior notification delivery history. The notification delivery module may change (e.g., increase or decrease) the total budget for the user based on user history (e.g., volume and quality of the notifications that are delivered and interacted by the user). The notification delivery module may periodically (e.g., every 24-hour window) allocate a budget to every application …

Is Diamond A Resource Curse For Africa?, Karli Hamrick Dec 2019

Is Diamond A Resource Curse For Africa?, Karli Hamrick

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper investigates the resource curse in diamond exporting industry in African countries. The empirical evidence about the “resource curse” is mixed in literature and almost none has been done regarding diamond. Our study aims to bridge that gap. The results suggest that diamond export is positively correlated with well-being in a group of African countries. In other words, the “resource curse” may not occur in diamond mining industry after the Kimberly Process (KP) was put in place in 2002. We argue that the KP serves as a good institution and has created good incentives for firms in the industry. …

Experimental Constraints On Ocean Wave Erosion Of Icebergs And Glaciers, Adriana D. Formby Fernandez, Alexander A. Robel Phd, Samantha Buzzard Phd, Austin Matthews Dec 2019

Experimental Constraints On Ocean Wave Erosion Of Icebergs And Glaciers, Adriana D. Formby Fernandez, Alexander A. Robel Phd, Samantha Buzzard Phd, Austin Matthews

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Loss of ice from glaciers and ice sheets has been steadily increasing over recent decades due to rising oceanic and atmospheric temperatures. White (1980) developed a theoretical estimate for the erosion rate of icy surface by wave activity, which has since been used as the sole basis for calculating wave melting effects in ocean and ice sheet models. In this study, we conduct the first new experiments since White (1980) to test the established parameterization and extend it to a wider range of wave and water properties. A custom-built 1.2 meter long wave tank is used to simulate the behavior …

Total Electron Content And Ionospheric Scintillation Measurements During The Total Solar Eclipse Of July 2, 2019, Lucas Eduardo Tijerina Poinsot, Daniel Nigro, Julian Herrera Tenorio, Chintan Thakrar, Danayit Mekonnen

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) provide a reliable source of radio wave signals that is available at all times throughout the entire planet. These signals are known to also interact with the ionosphere, where there is a high concentration of free electrons and ions. This in turn creates a framework for scientists to continuously monitor and analyze how these signals are affected by free electron and ion concentration irregularities in this region. Such irregularities may induce fluctuations in both signal amplitude and phase known as ionospheric scintillations. The behavior of the ionosphere is also known to be directly related with …

Evaluation Of Stent And Baffle Deformation In Hybrid Comprehensive Stage Ii Procedure, Arka Das, Ray Prather, Kayla C. Livingston, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab, Michael Farias, William Decampli

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Introduction: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) that leads to a single ventricle circulation (SV). The existing three-stage palliative operation leads to 50% survival rates. To reduce the morbidity and mortality rate associated with the procedure, an alternative technique called Hybrid Comprehensive Stage II (HCSII) featuring the inclusion of a stent and baffle in the left and right pulmonary arteries shown is proposed. The included stent included has the potential to become fractured as a result of oscillatory asymmetric external loads.

Materials and Methods: A dynamically-scaled mock flow loop (MFL) study of HCSII shows the …

Describing Web Archives: A Computer-Assisted Approach, Gregory Wiedeman Dec 2019

Describing Web Archives: A Computer-Assisted Approach, Gregory Wiedeman

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Currently, web archives are challenging for users to discover and use. Many archives and libraries are actively collecting web archives, but description in this area has been dominated by bibliographic approaches, which do not connect web archives to existing description or contextual information, and have often resulted in format-based silos. This is primarily because web archiving tools such as Archive-It arrange materials by seeds and groups of seeds, which reflect the complex technical process of web crawling or web recording, and are often not very meaningful to users or helpful for discovery. This article makes the case for arranging and …

Review Of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’S Future In An Uncertain World, Ben Goldman Dec 2019

Review Of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’S Future In An Uncertain World, Ben Goldman

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’s Future in an Uncertain World explores strategies for how public libraries can become more sustainable organizations in a time of social and environmental disruptions. Sustainability, viewed through the lens of triple bottom line accounting, can be accomplished by understanding and prioritizing the needs of the communities that libraries serve. While not written with archives in mind, the book offers important insights for archivists, who collectively must do more to prepare for climate-driven disruptions to their work.

Multi-Scale Analysis Of Multifunctional Composites And 3d Printed Polymers, Daniel Branden Perez Dec 2019

Multi-Scale Analysis Of Multifunctional Composites And 3d Printed Polymers, Daniel Branden Perez

Open Access Dissertations

Methods of multi-scale analysis through combined physical testing and computational FEM were used to investigate structural battery composites and 3D printed polymers. Multifunctional composite structural batteries are materials capable of storing electrical energy while providing structural rigidity. Two battery cell configurations were considered: a carbon paper based cell with copper and aluminum foils, and a woven carbon fiber-based battery with nickel and iron deposition coatings. Flexural simulations were performed through simulated and physical three-point bend testing. Unidirectional carbon fiber layers in the place of the carbon paper can lead to up to a 233.73 GPa stiffness, significantly greater than the …

Investigating Novel Compounds In The Treatment Of Cardiac Arrhythmia, Briana Marie Bohannon Dec 2019

Investigating Novel Compounds In The Treatment Of Cardiac Arrhythmia, Briana Marie Bohannon

Open Access Dissertations

Cardiac arrhythmia leads to 325,000 cases of sudden cardiac death annually in adults alone (Clinic 2017). Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is an arrhythmogenic disorder that is caused by mutations (or channelopathies) in voltage-gated ion channels expressed in the cardiomyocyte. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have emerged as a potential therapeutic for the treatment of LQTS because they modulate the activity of voltage-gated ion channels involved in LQTS pathology. PUFAs are amphipathic molecules with a hydrophilic head group, as well as long, polyunsaturated hydrophobic tail. In this work, we demonstrate that the position of the double bonds in the hydrophobic tail influence …

The primary purpose of this essay is to provide information and an overview for conductors and performers who are preparing a performance of Symphony #3 “Visions” by James Stephenson. Each individual movement is discussed, addressing a range of observations as discovered from extensive score study. These include theoretical observations, use of orchestration, and thematic and motivic development. Unifying elements to other movements such as thematic recurrences are identified. Each chapter also addresses performance considerations such as potential issues with balance, clarifications with articulations, considerations for ensemble precision, vital cues from the conductor, and so forth. Appendices include the composer’s program …

Leveraging Admixture In United States Minority Populations To Elucidate The Genetic Underpinnings Of Multiple Sclerosis, Ashley Harris Beecham Dec 2019

Leveraging Admixture In United States Minority Populations To Elucidate The Genetic Underpinnings Of Multiple Sclerosis, Ashley Harris Beecham

Open Access Dissertations

Notable progress has been made towards unraveling the genetic architecture of multiple sclerosis (MS) within ancestral European populations; with 200 confirmed variants outside of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) explaining ~19% of the genetic predisposition to MS, and the MHC alone explaining ~20%. However, the genetics of MS in Hispanics and African Americans remains largely understudied. I proposed to examine the role of the previously confirmed non-MHC MS risk loci in United States patient populations of Hispanics and African Americans and to identify novel loci. In Hispanics, I proposed to extend these analyses; both to characterize the MHC and to …

The Effects Of Coral Presence Among Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle) Prop Roots On Caribbean Fish Communities., Jennifer Lynn Wright Dec 2019

The Effects Of Coral Presence Among Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle) Prop Roots On Caribbean Fish Communities., Jennifer Lynn Wright

Open Access Theses

Coral reefs and mangroves play a variety of roles in the lives of reef fishes, serving as nursery, feeding, and breeding grounds. Mangroves, while often near reef ecosystems, do not typically have suitable conditions for coral recruitment and growth, though mangrove-coral habitats do occur. The distribution and extent of these mangrove-coral habitats, as well as the composition of the fish community that utilizes them, are poorly understood. In several locations throughout Bocas del Toro, Panama, many species of corals grow on and among submerged red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) prop roots. This study aimed to analyze the reef fish …
