Developing An Organizational Decision Making Model: The Impact Of Organizational Structures, Decision Types, And The Social Network, John Huggins Dec 2019

Developing An Organizational Decision Making Model: The Impact Of Organizational Structures, Decision Types, And The Social Network, John Huggins

Theses and Dissertations

Organizational decision making can be seen as a complex process due to the fact that decisions across organizational levels are generally interdependent, and have effects ranging from immediate to long-lasting. Reviewing decision making mathematical and process models, decision making is fundamentally characterized by multiple decision making steps from encountering a problem to determining a course of action. The first objective of this dissertation was the determination of the decision making model that a certain type of organization uses, and the establishment of a foundation for an organizational decision model framework. Decision making can be classified into three decision types: strategic, …

Maintaining Agronomics, Economics, And Furrow-Irrigation Efficiency In Mid-Southern Usa Soybean Conservation Production Systems, Corey Bryant Dec 2019

Maintaining Agronomics, Economics, And Furrow-Irrigation Efficiency In Mid-Southern Usa Soybean Conservation Production Systems, Corey Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

Mid-southern USA soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] producers are being pushed to increase adoption of conservation tillage systems as a means of increasing the application efficiency of gravity flow irrigation systems. This research was conducted to determine whether the efficiency of furrow-irrigation systems could be manipulated through conservation tillage systems while maintaining soybean productivity and profitability. Three experiments were conducted near Stoneville, MS on a Dubbs silt loam (Fine-silty, mixed, active, thermic Typic Hapludalfs) to determine the effects of reducing tillage and increasing ground cover residues on irrigation application efficiency, irrigation water use efficiency, soybean grain yield, and net returns …

Zoonotic Risk Of Emerging Influenza Viruses From Domestic Animals, Sherry Blackmon Dec 2019

Zoonotic Risk Of Emerging Influenza Viruses From Domestic Animals, Sherry Blackmon

Theses and Dissertations

Influenza poses a significant global health risk due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with endemic strains and the pandemic potential of novel strains. This research characterizes the zoonotic risk of emerging influenza viruses from domestic animals. Chapter two investigates the genetic compatibility of pandemic H1N1 and emerging canine influenza H3N2 (CIV-H3N2), first identified in dogs in 2007 and currently responsible for outbreaks in shelters in the U.S. We generated 51 of the 127 possible reassortant viruses: 19 showed high-growth phenotypes and 13 replicated in mice lungs. A reassortant with the HA and NP genes derived from CIV-H3N2 transmitted …

Recently, carbon dioxide capture and conversion, along with hydrogen from renewable resources, provide an alternative approach to synthesis of useful fuels and chemicals. People are increasingly interested in developing innovative carbon dioxide hydrogenation catalysts, and the pace of progress in this area is accelerating. Accordingly, this perspective presents current state of the art and outlook in synthesis of light olefins, dimethyl ether, liquid fuels, and alcohols through two leading hydrogenation mechanisms: methanol reaction and Fischer-Tropsch based carbon dioxide hydrogenation. The future research directions for developing new heterogeneous catalysts with transformational technologies, including 3D printing and artificial intelligence, are provided.

Caring Science Education: The Essence Of Professional Practice For The Registered Nurse, Linda C. Ackerman Dec 2019

Caring Science Education: The Essence Of Professional Practice For The Registered Nurse, Linda C. Ackerman

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Hospitals have moved from caring, healing environments to business or economic models of caring institutions that focus on census instead of on patients and on technology instead of on touch or human connection (Watson, 2006).

Context: As nurse leaders, we have an obligation to create an environment of authentic, professional, human caring practices within our organizations. Caring science empowers nurses to balance the art and science of clinical judgment by engaging and collaborating with the patient and their family, focusing on the needs of the whole person, honoring the unique perception of health and healing, and engaging them to …

Adopting Complex Case Management Competencies, Phyllis Stark Dec 2019

Adopting Complex Case Management Competencies, Phyllis Stark

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Improving disposition management of complex hospitalized patients is crucial to the success of acute care facilities. Most hospital patients discharge in less than 5 days, but there is a cohort of complex patients whose length of stay far-exceeds the norm (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service Website, n.d.). Today’s case managers are focused on patients who are discharging today or tomorrow in order to keep hospital census cycling through. This phenomenon known as “throughput” drives daily operations and is a measure of success. When case managers are faced with complex patients whose length of stay measured in weeks, months, or …

Research Experiences For Undergraduates, Various Presenters Dec 2019

Research Experiences For Undergraduates, Various Presenters

Science Seminars

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) allow for first-hand exposure to research, other institutions and the scientists that work in them. For that reason, REUs are considered an integral part of undergraduate STEM education. There will be a discussion of the application process for REUs, how to write personal statements, and the benefits of participation. Hear a first-hand account of REU experience. In addition, there will be a Q&A session to address specific concerns and questions.
