Photoemission Electron Microscopy To Characterize Slow Light In A Photonic Crystal Line Defect, Theodore Stedmark, Rolf Könenkamp Jan 2019

Photoemission Electron Microscopy To Characterize Slow Light In A Photonic Crystal Line Defect, Theodore Stedmark, Rolf Könenkamp

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using femtosecond nonlinear photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) we provide a detailed characterization of slow light in a small-size asymmetric photonic crystal structure. We show that PEEM is capable of providing a unique description of the light propagation in such structures by direct imaging of the guided mode. This noninvasive characterization technique allows modal properties such as effective index, phase velocities, and group velocities to be determined. Combining experimental results with finite element method simulation calculations, we study slow light phenomena in a photonic crystal defect mode, and we produce a comprehensive picture of the mechanisms behind it. Our results illustrate …

Imaging Technologies And Strategies For Detection Of Extant Extraterrestrial Microorganisms, Jay Nadeau, Manuel Bedrossian, Chris Lindensmith Jan 2019

Imaging Technologies And Strategies For Detection Of Extant Extraterrestrial Microorganisms, Jay Nadeau, Manuel Bedrossian, Chris Lindensmith

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is no reductionist definition of life, so the way organisms look, behave, and move is the most definitive way to identify extraterrestrial life. Life elsewhere in the Solar System is likely to be microbial, but no microscope capable of imaging prokaryotic life has ever flown on a lander mission to a habitable planet. Nonetheless, high-resolution microscopes have been developed that are appropriate for planetary exploration. Traditional light microscopy, interferometric microscopy, light-field microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and electron microscopy are all possible techniques for the detection of extant micro-organisms on Mars and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. This article …

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Creep Deformation In Nickel-Based Superalloy, Sabila Kader Pinky Jan 2019

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Creep Deformation In Nickel-Based Superalloy, Sabila Kader Pinky

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The present study employs molecular dynamics simulations of Ni-based superalloy to investigate the creep behavior under uniaxial compression test. Dislocation dynamics is analyzed for the nickel-based single crystal superalloy with the presence of void and with varying the distribution of gamma-prime phase The results show that multiple-void systems are more prone to yield than single-void systems and single-void systems are more prone to yield than the system without void. From the simulations, it has been determined that the creep mechanism in Ni/Ni3Al is subject to change on the applied stress depending on the distribution of gamma-prime phases change. Dislocation behavior …

Promoting Support For Public Health Policies Through Mediated Contact: Can Narrator Perspective And Self-Disclosure Curb In-Group Favoritism?, Riva Tukachinsky, Emily Brogan-Freitas, Tessa Urbanovich Jan 2019

Promoting Support For Public Health Policies Through Mediated Contact: Can Narrator Perspective And Self-Disclosure Curb In-Group Favoritism?, Riva Tukachinsky, Emily Brogan-Freitas, Tessa Urbanovich

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

An online 2 × 2 factorial experiment (N = 203) examined the effect of parasocial contact on support for public health policies in the context of opioid addiction. We hypothesize that because of an intergroup dynamic, individuals are less likely to engage with an outgroup character than an in-group character featured in a news magazine article. Results support the in-group favoritism hypothesis. The study examines two narrative devices for overcoming this tendency: the narrator’s perspective and amount of insight into the character’s inner world through character self-disclosure. We find support for the narrator perspective but not for the self-disclosure effect. …

The Adoption Of Collaborative Robots Toward Ubiquitous Diffusion: A Research Agenda, Yuhua (Jake) Liang, Seungcheol Austin Lee Jan 2019

The Adoption Of Collaborative Robots Toward Ubiquitous Diffusion: A Research Agenda, Yuhua (Jake) Liang, Seungcheol Austin Lee

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This paper proposes a framework to study the adoption of collaborative robots (co-robots or cobots) as an innovation and their diffusion into the larger population. Collaborative robots are only starting to appear in our society, yet challenges such as fear and distrust may impede their further adoption. This paper discusses the foundational work necessary to understand collaborative robot adoption and the core elements to achieve ubiquitous diffusion, with a focus on human users and the communication processes.

Performance Of Plunge Depth Control Methods During Friction Stir Welding, Jinyoung Yoon, Cheolhee Kim, Sehun Rhee Jan 2019

Performance Of Plunge Depth Control Methods During Friction Stir Welding, Jinyoung Yoon, Cheolhee Kim, Sehun Rhee

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Friction stir welding is a preferred solid state welding process for Al/Fe joints, and in friction stir lap welding, the plunge depth is the most critical parameter for joint strength. We compared three plunge depth control methods, namely conventional position control, offset position control, and deflection compensation control in the friction stir lap welding of 3 mm-thick Al 5083-O alloy over 1.2 mm-thick DP 590 steel. The desired plunge depth was 0.2 mm into the steel sheet. However, the pin did not reach the steel surface under conventional position control due to deflection of the vertical axis of the welding …

Improvement Of The Tribological Characteristics Of Aisi 8620, 8640 And 52100 Steels Through Thermo-Reactive Treatments, Rafael Magalhães Triani, Fábio Edson Mariani, Lucas Fuscaldi De Assis Gomes, Pedro Gabriel Bonella De Oliveira, George E. Totten, Luiz Carlos Casteletti

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The production of vanadium and niobium carbides (VC and NbC) layers on AISI 8620, 8640, and 52100 steels may increase hardness and wear resistance of substrates. Thermochemical treatments were performed at 1000 °C for 2 and 4 h. The characterization of the treated samples was carried out by means of Knoop microhardness tests, “calotest” type microadhesive wear test, layer adhesion test according to VDI 3198 standard, and X-ray diffraction. Compact and uniform layers of VC and NbC were obtained in all treatments, with hardness up to 2500 HK and microadhesive wear resistance far superior to that of the substrates, indicating …
