Using Species Distribution Models And Connectivity Analyses To Predict Habitat Suitability For Three Bat Species, James Howard Cox Iii
Using Species Distribution Models And Connectivity Analyses To Predict Habitat Suitability For Three Bat Species, James Howard Cox Iii
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Forests are the most important and universally threatened habitats for bats. Habitat loss and fragmentation are leading causes of damage to forest ecosystem integrity. Critically, most bats need forests: over half of the 45 species of bats in North America use forests for roosting or foraging. Much research to date has been done to identify roosting and foraging patches of bats, but few have attempted to investigate how these patches are connected across a landscape. By understanding how to maintain connectivity across even fragmented landscapes, we may be able to mitigate the effects of forest habitat loss. In this thesis, …

Graduate School of Social Work Publications and Research
Using data from 1,352 middle-school Israeli adolescents, the current study examines the interface of spirituality and character strengths and its longitudinal contribution to subjective well-being and prosociality. Participants were approached three times over a 14-months period and completed measures of character strengths, spirituality, subjective well-being (positive emotions, life satisfaction), and prosociality. Findings revealed a fourth-factor structure of character strengths that included the typical tripartite classification of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intellectual strengths together with spirituality emerging as a statistically autonomous factor. Spirituality was stable over time and contributed to higher subjective well-being and prosociality both cross- sectionally and longitudinally. Discussion focuses …

Does compassion itself benefit the healing process or does the activation of neurophysiological processes, from which the experience of compassion arises, trigger a cascade of physical and psychological changes that support health and well-being? Exploration of the neurological substrates of compassion reveals multiple healing pathways that can be activated by mind-body practices. Furthermore, these pathways affect physical health, emotion regulation, and how we perceive and relate to others.
Physiological states affect the capacity for empathy, compassion and understanding. A state of calm alertness based on sympatho-vagal balance may support such high-level prosocial functions. Evidence suggests that polyvagal-informed mind-body practices, particularly …

Objective
Autophagy is a bulk degradation system for intracellular proteins which contributes to skeletal muscle homeostasis, according to previous studies in humans and rodents. However, there is a lack of information on the physiological role of autophagy in the skeletal muscle of meat animals. This study was planned as a pilot study to investigate changes in expression of two major autophagy-related genes, microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3β (MAP1LC3B) and autophagy related 7 (ATG7) in fattening beef cattle, and to compare them with skeletal muscle growth.
Methods
Six castrated Japanese Black cattle (initial body weight: 503±20 kg) were enrolled in …

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is a widely used and extensively researched psychodiagnostic instrument that has received some attention regarding its use with racial and ethnic populations. Most of this attention has focused on scaled score differences observed between White and African American individuals, with conclusions ranging from questions about the instruments integrity and fairness in its use with diverse populations, to theories that these differences reflect individual and environmental disparities between groups. Despite a number of studies focusing on racial differences on the MMPI and its revised form, the MMPI-2, few studies have examined whether these differences exist …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent research ofBailey College of Engineering and Technology (IT) end-user cybersecurity-related risky behaviors has focused on items such as IT user decision-making, impulsiveness, and internet use as predictors of human cyber vulnerability. Theories which guide user human behavioral intent, such as protection motivation theory (PMT, introduced by Rogers, 1975) and technology threat avoidance theory (TTAT, introduced by Liang and Xue, 2009) have not been widely investigated as antecedents of risky cybersecurity behavior (RScB). ThisDissertation describes exploratory research that analyzed and evaluated PMT/TTAT factors as predictors of RScB by enterprise IT users. This work uniquely contributes to the literature by investigating …

Forensic evaluators receive training on multicultural assessment and most forensic assessment textbooks include guidelines addressing multicultural issues, but there is little research examining how race/ethnicity and linguistic differences may impact competency to stand trial evaluations. There is a need for research to better understand the needs of Hispanic individuals who are among the fastest growing populations in the United States. Prior studies suggest that clinicians may diagnose African American defendants and Hispanic individuals with a more severe diagnosis when compared to Caucasian individuals. When defendants communicate in their secondary language or require the use of an interpreter it may impact …

The Role Of Optimism In Goal Adjustment Behavior And Subjective Well-Being, Emily R. Fink
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that the experience of striving towards blocked goals negatively impacts subjective well-being, through decreased self-esteem and increased rumination and intrusive thoughts (Klinger, 1977; Mathews & Wells, 2004). Self-regulation theories propose that individuals may avoid these negative outcomes by engaging in goal adjustment processes comprised of goal disengagement (i.e., withdrawal of effort and resources from a desired goal) and goal reengagement (i.e., psychological and motivation commitment towards a new goal; Wrosch, Scheier, Carver & Schulz, 2003). While self-regulation theorists generally agree that optimism is likely to be linked with goal adjustment processes, there is significant disagreement as to the …

A Gis-Based Modeling Approach To High-Resolution Anthropogenic Heat Flux And Building Energy Demand In Los Angeles, Yuanfan Zheng
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic heat flux (Q f ) originates from energy consumption in buildings, industrial plants, vehicle exhaust, and human metabolism. Q f is an important component of the urban Surface Energy Balance (SEB) system and a key to understanding many urban environmental issues. Climate change affects building energy consumption in many ways, and building energy consumption is the largest contributor to Q f in many cities. One of these contributions comprises changes in heating and cooling demands in buildings. The increase in annual energy use in cities results in more carbon emissions and constitutes a great challenge to urban sustainability because …

Bat Box Design Affects Microclimate And Suitability As Habitat, Francis Edward Tillman Jr.
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bats that roost in cavities and crevices are vulnerable to deforestation and habitat loss. Bat boxes can serve as alternate roosts for tree-dependent bat species, but we know little about how box design affects internal microclimate. If a box gets too hot (> 45°C), it can become an ecological trap. We assessed microclimate in 20 different box designs, using data loggers to measure internal temperatures in each box installed at a 20 ha site in Vigo County, Indiana (20 May–15 September 2018). We evaluated maximum (T max ), minimum (T min ), stability, and instantaneous temperature ranges and proportion of …

Staphylococcus aureus is commonly found as normal flora on human skin. As such, it is a frequent cause of skin and soft tissue infection that often spreads to deeper tissue. It has become an especially important microorganism in both clinical and community settings due to its propensity to acquire resistance to antibiotics as well as the invasive mechanisms it utilizes. Specifically, community-associated methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strains have developed resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and, perhaps more importantly, many invasive pathogenic mechanisms. Thisdissertation explores novel virulence mechanisms of CA-MRSA infections through characterization of novel protein within the prevalent CA-MRSA strain, …

The twenty-first century library at a newly opened medical school often differs from those at traditional medical schools. One obvious difference is that the new medical school library tends to be a born-digital library, meaning that the library collection is almost exclusively digital. However, the unique issues related to building a library at a new medical school are not limited to online collections. A unique start-up culture is prevalent, of which newly appointed directors and other library and medical school leaders need to be aware. This special paper provides an overview of best practices experienced in building new medical school …
