High School Arthropod Display Case, Daniel Taylor Jan 2019

High School Arthropod Display Case, Daniel Taylor

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Background: I teach at a high school in Northfield, Minnesota. I love teaching kids science and getting them excited about it. Unfortunately, I currently only teach chemistry and there are almost no elective science classes at our high school. I would love to get students interested in learning about entomology with me or on their own. Few students have ever been exposed to insect in a positive light ever before.

I have had some success at our school with entomological engagement. Each year during the zoology unit I go in to the biology classes as a “guest lecturer” and give …

Effect Of Hydrogen Exposure On The Electronic And Optical Properties Of Insulating Titanates, John G. Connell Jan 2019

Effect Of Hydrogen Exposure On The Electronic And Optical Properties Of Insulating Titanates, John G. Connell

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Hydrogen exposure of insulating d0-titanates, such as SrTiO3 (STO), has displayed the formation of intriguing conducting states. These conducting states form through the use of forming gas (N2/H2) annealing or hydrogen plasma exposure, where hydrogen gas is exposed to high energy microwaves. The exposure of STO to hydrogen causes metallic conductivity due to the introduction of hydrogen cations on some of the oxygen sites. However, the optical properties of this hydrogen-exposed STO have not been well-studied. Further, Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST), an insulating dielectric, also shows changes in its conductivity …

The Role Of Angular Momentum In The Interplay Between Disk Galaxies And Their Host Dark Matter Halos: Corollaries For The Hubble Fork Diagram, Angela Collier Jan 2019

The Role Of Angular Momentum In The Interplay Between Disk Galaxies And Their Host Dark Matter Halos: Corollaries For The Hubble Fork Diagram, Angela Collier

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

A majority of disk galaxies host stellar bars that regulate and amplify the flow of angular momentum, J, between disks and their parent dark matter (DM) halos. These bars constitute the prime factor driving internal galaxy evolution. Yet, a non-negligible fraction of disks lack this morphological feature, which led to adoption of the Hubble Fork Diagram. The complex evolution of barred galaxies has been studied by means of numerical simulations, complemented by observations. Despite prolonged efforts, many fundamental questions remain, in part because cosmological simulations still lack the necessary resolution to account for resonant interactions and simulations of isolated …

Electronic Properties Of Atomically Thin Material Heterostructures, M. Javad Farrokhi Jan 2019

Electronic Properties Of Atomically Thin Material Heterostructures, M. Javad Farrokhi

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

There is a movement in the electronic industry toward building electronic devices with dimensions smaller than is currently possible. Atomically thin 2D material, such as graphene, bilayer graphene, hBN and MoS2 are great candidate for this goal and they have a potential set of novel electronic properties compare to their bulk counterparts due to the exhibition of quantum confinement effects. To this goal, we have investigated the electric field screening of multilayer 2D materials due to the presence of impurity charge in the interface and vertical electric fifield from back gate. Our result shows a dramatic difference of screening behavior …

Magnetic Field Monitoring In The Sns Neutron Edm Experiment, Alina Aleksandrova Jan 2019

Magnetic Field Monitoring In The Sns Neutron Edm Experiment, Alina Aleksandrova

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

It is a well known fact that the visible universe is made almost entirely of baryonic matter. Yet, this is also one of the greatest puzzles that physicists are trying to solve: Where did all of this matter come from in the first place? The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics predicts a baryon asymmetry that is much smaller than what is observed in nature. In order to try and explain this discrepancy, Sakharov (1967) postulated three necessary conditions for baryogenesis in the early universe. One of these is the requirement that charge conjugation (C) and the product of C …

PATIENTS AND METHODS:

We compared outcomes from elderly fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed between 2011 and 2015 with breast, lung, colorectal, thyroid, or pancreatic cancer, lymphoma, or melanoma and served by COME HOME practices before and after program implementation versus similar beneficiaries served by other geographically proximate oncologists. Difference-in-differences analysis compared changes in outcomes for COME HOME patients versus concurrent controls. Propensity score matching and regression methods were adjusted for …

Knob-Socket Investigation Of Stability And Specificity In Alpha-Helical Secondary And Quaternary Packing Structure, Taylor Renee Rabara Jan 2019

Knob-Socket Investigation Of Stability And Specificity In Alpha-Helical Secondary And Quaternary Packing Structure, Taylor Renee Rabara

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The novel knob-socket (KS) model provides a construct to interpret and analyze the direct contributions of amino acid residues to the stability in α-helical protein structures. Based on residue preferences derived from a set of protein structures, the KS construct characterizes intra- and inter-helical packing into regular patterns of simple motifs. The KS model was used in the de novo design of an α-helical homodimer, KSα1.1. Using site-directed mutagenesis, KSα1.1 point mutants were designed to selectively increase and decrease stability by relating KS propensities with changes to α-helical structure. This study suggests that the sockets from the KS Model can …

Exploring The Molecular Origin Of Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidative Deposition Through Statistical Analysis Of Mass Spectral Data And Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Of Deposits, Krege Matthew Christison Jan 2019

Exploring The Molecular Origin Of Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidative Deposition Through Statistical Analysis Of Mass Spectral Data And Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Of Deposits, Krege Matthew Christison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

ASTM D3241 (Standard Test Method for Thermal Oxidation Stability of Aviation Turbine Fuels) measures the thermal oxidative stability of jet fuels under elevated temperature and pressure conditions. When jet fuels fail ASTM D3241, either at the refinery or in the distribution system, there can be supply disruptions and financial losses. Understanding the causes of poor thermal oxidative stability in jet fuels could help prevent or mitigate issues. In order to develop a deeper understanding of the molecular precursors that lead to ASTM D3241 failures, a number of analytical methodologies and data treatment techniques have been developed, applied, and reported here. …

Functional Analysis Of Bacillus Anthracis Aspartate Transcarbamoylase And Dihydroorotase, Katelyn Leigh Schwager Silva Jan 2019

Functional Analysis Of Bacillus Anthracis Aspartate Transcarbamoylase And Dihydroorotase, Katelyn Leigh Schwager Silva

Wayne State University Theses

There are many enzymes required for efficient and proper pyrimidine biosynthesis. The two that are most important and were discussed in this thesis are aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) and dihydroorotase (DHOase). Both play an important role in not only pyrimidine biosynthesis production, but also mechanistic regulation of de novo synthesis. Anthrax is an infection caused by Bacillus anthracis. Here we studied ATCase and DHOase in Bacillus Anthracis. In this thesis we understood the effects of the enzymes ATCase and DHOase on pyrimidine biosynthesis. Adequate inhibitors of these enzymes would result in cell death and could pose as a cure to infection …

Molecular Mechanisms In Cftr-F508del Degradation And The Functional Defect Of Cftr Absence In Rabbits, Carthic Rajagopalan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common, lethal autosomal recessive disorder, and is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator protein (CFTR), an anion channel that is found in most epithelial cells lining the airway and gut. The most common mutation of CFTR is deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (CFTR-F508del), which produces a misfolded protein. Through the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), this misfolded protein is ubiquitinated and signaled for degradation via the cytosolic proteasome. Previous studies demonstrating experimental restoration of F508DEL-CFTR trafficking to the plasma membrane showed partial function of the chloride channel, raising therapeutic speculations. …

Required, Permissible, And Impermissible Forms Of Federal Judicial Assistance To Self-Represented Litigants: Toward Establishment Of A Judicial Duty Of Reasonable Assistance, Jona Goldschmidt

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the evolving role of judicial assistance to self-represented litigants (SRLs) in federal courts, arguing that while the Supreme Court has maintained a strict no-assistance policy, lower courts have increasingly recognized the need for accommodations to ensure fair trials. The author advocates for a more consistent and expansive approach to judicial assistance, aligning with due process and the constitutional right to self-representation, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining judicial impartiality.

Building Human Rights Consciousness In Postconflict Societies: Peruvian Adolescents’ Understandings Of Human Rights, Gabriel M. Velez Jan 2019

Building Human Rights Consciousness In Postconflict Societies: Peruvian Adolescents’ Understandings Of Human Rights, Gabriel M. Velez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

During adolescence, individuals begin to form ideas about human rights as part of the development of a sense of self. The outcomes of these processes are influential in the stability and peace in postconflict societies. However, there remain many questions about how these youth construct ideas about human rights and how they become oriented toward promoting these in society through a developed human rights consciousness. This study investigates how adolescents in an underexplored area of postconflict societies—where past violence was not intimately experienced—understand human rights. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 25 fifteen-year-olds across five schools in Tacna, Peru. These adolescents …

Publications and Research

Background: Current methods used for annotating metagenomics shotgun sequencing (MGS) data rely on a computationally intensive and low-stringency approach of mapping each read to a generic database of proteins or reference microbial genomes.

Results: We developed MGS-Fast, an analysis approach for shotgun whole-genome metagenomic data utilizing Bowtie2 DNA-DNA alignment of reads that is an alternative to using the integrated catalog of reference genes database of well-annotated genes compiled from human microbiome data. This method is rapid and provides high-stringency matches (>90% DNA sequence identity) of the metagenomics reads to genes with annotated functions. We demonstrate the use of this …

A Comparative Study Of Equine Gut Microbiomes Using 16s And 18s Rrna Sequencing, Jillian Jorgenson Jan 2019

A Comparative Study Of Equine Gut Microbiomes Using 16s And 18s Rrna Sequencing, Jillian Jorgenson

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

The gut microbiome of domestic horses (Equus ferus caballus) can be broken down into two primary divisions of interest: (1) prokaryotic composition, consisting of bacteria and archaea and (2) fungal composition. Within the gut, there are also eukaryotic parasite communities that may interact with the microbiome. While each has been the subject of various scientific explorations, in this study we analyze the potential interconnectedness of these categories. To determine the extent to which each component of the gut microbiome/parasitic communities influences the other, DNA was extracted and amplified from the fecal samples of eight horses. A combination of …

Background

Despite decades of use of control programs, schistosomiasis remains a global public health problem. To further reduce prevalence and intensity of infection, or to achieve the goal of elimination in low-endemic areas, there needs to be better diagnostic tools to detect low-intensity infections in low-endemic areas in Brazil. The rationale for development of new diagnostic tools is that the current standard test Kato-Katz (KK) is not sensitive enough to detect low-intensity infections in low-endemic areas. In order to develop new diagnostic tools, we employed a proteomics approach to identify biomarkers associated with schistosome-specific immune responses in hopes of developing …

The population of Brazil is currently characterised by many individuals harbouring low-intensity Schistosoma mansoni infections. The Kato-Katz technique is the diagnostic method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to assess these infections, but this method is not sensitive enough in the context of low egg excretion. In this regard, potential alternatives are being employed to overcome the limits of the Kato-Katz technique. In the present review, we evaluated the performance of parasitological and immunological approaches adopted in Brazilian areas. Currently, the diagnostic choices involve a combination of strategies, including the utilisation of antibody methods to screen individuals and then …

His Friend Judas: Why Didn't He Betray His Messiah?, Trevan Hatch

A question that Christians might ask is, if Jesus was so entrenched within and embracive of Judaism, then why did he condemn Jewish leaders and why was he ultimately rejected and killed by his fellow Jews? In this and the next four chapters (chapters 6–10) we will challenge the assumptions of that very question and illustrate that “the Jews” did not reject and kill Jesus, and that Jesus did not reject and condemn “the Jews.” We will explore the relationship between Jesus and his peers. We start in this chapter by looking at Judas, whose story is perhaps Exhibit A …
