Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The Turkish Embassy Letters is considered both inaugural and atypical of women’s travel writing, and scholarship is largely orientated around Montagu’s focus on women and their lives in the different countries she travelled to and stayed in between 1716 – 18. While this dissertation maintains a primary engagement with gender, it evaluates the text’s participation in myriad discourses and genres of the Restoration and early Augustan period. The cultural conditions that saw a significant growth in female participation in the world of print and, thereby, in intellectual exchange with men - often in writings loosely operating within a ‘Republic of …

Sonic Analysis For Machine Learning: Multi-Layer Perceptron Training Using Spectrograms, Samuel Pearce-Davies Jan 2019

Sonic Analysis For Machine Learning: Multi-Layer Perceptron Training Using Spectrograms, Samuel Pearce-Davies

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis presents efforts to lay the foundations for an Artificial-Intelligence musical compositional system conceived on similar principles to DeepDream, a revolutionary computer vision process. This theoretical system would be designed to engage in stylistic feature transfer between existing musical pieces, and eventually to compose original music either autonomously or in collaboration with human musicians and composers. In this thesis, construction of the analysis and feature recognition systems necessary for this long-term goal is achieved through the use of neural networks. Originally, DeepDream came about as a way of visualising the weights inside neural network layers – matrices of variables …

Europeanization Of Foreign Aid: Managing Post-9/11 Fragile, Conflict-Affected States, James Frank Flint Jan 2019

Europeanization Of Foreign Aid: Managing Post-9/11 Fragile, Conflict-Affected States, James Frank Flint

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Since the turn of the millennium fragile, conflict-affected states (FCAS) have grown to constitute a significant issue within European discourse. The spill-over of their ‘complex political emergencies’ is destabilising, as epitomised by the 9/11 attacks. Bush’s ‘war on terrorism’ speech-act during 9/11’s aftermath signified a juncture, and new historical epoch within International Relations. Within this epoch the EU was confronted by violent extremism/terrorism and irregular-migration flows. Nonetheless, fragile states risked being ‘aid orphans’. They can be unattractive to aid-donors due to the foreign aid dilemma whereby those states and peoples exhibiting the direst need of assistance are frequently the hardest …

From The Harmony Of The Spheres To Spherical Harmonics : The Potential Of Wave-Based Morphogenetic Processes For Musical And Architectural Composition, Nicolas Reeves Jan 2019

From The Harmony Of The Spheres To Spherical Harmonics : The Potential Of Wave-Based Morphogenetic Processes For Musical And Architectural Composition, Nicolas Reeves

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Architecture is to space what music is to time: this brief sentence summarizes the deep, intriguing and intimate relationship that architecture and music have maintained all along history, especially in the Western world. It also reflects the cosmological roots of this connection, which translates through a number of analogies in several fields (mythology, poetry, science, philosophy...), and which at times explicitly considered music and architecture as terrestrial echoes of the cosmos. The development of science from XVIIth century on has put a definitive end to the claim of this relationship at revealing anything sensible about the physical world. However, its …

Conduct Unbecoming An Officer And A Gentleman: Honour And Dishonour In The Court Martial Records Of The Marines Ashore, 1783-1793, Lee-Jane Giles

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This dissertation is an examination of the Marine Corps during the late eighteenth century. The main focus of the research is upon the officer corps and specifically examines the connections of masculine interactions, through the use of the charge ‘conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman’, in constructing behaviour which was considered as either honourable or dishonourable. A focus on this type of behaviour, and more importantly on transgressions of ideal behaviour, within the brotherhood of the officer corps can demonstrate how male representations were linked to validation and group values. Previous Marine Corps historiography has tended to focus upon …

Challenging Robot Morality: An Ethical Debate On Humanoid Companions, Dataveillance, And Algorithms, Eugenia Stamboliev Jan 2019

Challenging Robot Morality: An Ethical Debate On Humanoid Companions, Dataveillance, And Algorithms, Eugenia Stamboliev

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

In this thesis, I reflect on ethical, moral, and agenthood debates around social and humanoid robots in two ways. I focus on how the technological agency of social robots is understood in ethical canons by shifting from moral concerns in Robot Ethics to data-related ethical concerns in Media and Surveillance Studies. I then move to wider debates on morality, agenthood, and agencies in Machine and Computer Ethics research, so as to highlight that social robots, other robots, machines, and algorithmic structures are often moralised but not understood ethically. In that vein, I distinguish between these two terms to point to …

Artistic Modulation Of Consciousness By Bioelectromagnetic Stimulation, Luis Miguel Almeida Ferreira Girao Jan 2019

Artistic Modulation Of Consciousness By Bioelectromagnetic Stimulation, Luis Miguel Almeida Ferreira Girao

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

The thesis demonstrates why the application of bioelectromagnetic stimulation as a medium of artistic expression allows for the production of new and unprecedented realisations of integrative art. Furthermore, the modulation of consciousness in human beings relating with such realisations is argued to be the core of a new practice of research resulting from the technological confluence of Philosophy, Art and Science. The Brunelleschi Experiment is examined in order to establish the assumption that one of the fundamental characteristics of Art is to impact consciousness of those interacting with its forms. The aspects of disembodiment of the previously referred experiment, instrumental …

Peter Fuller, Modern Painters And The Sensation Exhibition, James Alexander Brown Jan 2019

Peter Fuller, Modern Painters And The Sensation Exhibition, James Alexander Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis investigates the decline of a particular form of art criticism, embodied by the English art critic and editor, Peter Fuller. Fuller’s criticism developed out of a Kantian tradition, presenting judgements of objective worth arrived at through the exercise of taste, and championed what he described as the British or English Romantic landscape tradition. Central to the decline was the displacement of art criticism and the art critic in the creation and articulation of value in art worlds. Through a historiographical study of Modern Painters, the publication founded by Fuller in 1988, the thesis explores the changing relationship between …

Prototyping Relational Things That Talk: A Discursive Design Strategy For Conversational Ai Systems, Birgitte Aga Jan 2019

Prototyping Relational Things That Talk: A Discursive Design Strategy For Conversational Ai Systems, Birgitte Aga

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This practice-based research inquiry explores the implications of conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, ‘relational things that talk’, on the way people experience the world. It responds directly to the pervasive lack of ethical design frameworks for commercial AI systems, compounded by limited transparency, ubiquitous authority, embedded bias and the absence of diversity in the development process. The effect produced by relational things that talk upon the feelings, thoughts or intentions of the user is here defined as the ‘perlocutionary effect’ of conversational AI systems. This effect is constituted by these systems’ ‘relationality‘ and ‘persuasiveness’, propagated by the system’s embedded bias …

The Impact Of Quality Management On The Thermal Performance Of Social Housing In The United Kingdom, João Paulo Ulrich De Alencastro Jan 2019

The Impact Of Quality Management On The Thermal Performance Of Social Housing In The United Kingdom, João Paulo Ulrich De Alencastro

Mindfulness And Embodiment In The Design Of A Synthetic Experience, Julieta Aguilera Jan 2019

Mindfulness And Embodiment In The Design Of A Synthetic Experience, Julieta Aguilera

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

How can the design of synthetic experiences and scientific visualizations establish aesthetically coherent spatiotemporal interactions that couple with the embodiment continuum already in place in the structures of the mind, the body, and the planetary environment in which we exist? The thesis addresses synthetic experiences in three areas: research on mind and the senses, designing sensorimotor embodiment, and the relevant notion of mindfulness as enaction practice. In real life we never have firsthand access to the experiences of others, or their feelings about their experiences, or ultimately who they are as people, but instead rely on simulations to explore what …

Theorising The Embodiment Of Materiality And Experience In Man-Made Objects From A Design Perspective, Hana Hapiz Jan 2019

Theorising The Embodiment Of Materiality And Experience In Man-Made Objects From A Design Perspective, Hana Hapiz

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This PhD dissertation begins with a gap prompted by design researcher, Boradkar (2010) that objects are under theorized in design research. Objects have become our entourage and companion since we are born. Man and object transaction has formed a salient and unobtrusive relationship and we have become oblivious of, which is the importance of the attachment that we have with objects. This dissertation aims to provide a new horizon in articulating our relationship with designed objects. The precedent literatures suggest that the components of materiality and experience are evident in man-object transaction, thus they act as theoretical background to support …

Landscape Of Legislation: A Photographic Investigation Of The Mendip Hills Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, David Anthony Wyatt Jan 2019

Landscape Of Legislation: A Photographic Investigation Of The Mendip Hills Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, David Anthony Wyatt

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This study used the researcher’s own photographic practice to interrogate the judgements of value explicit in the creation and maintenance of the Mendip Hills ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ (AONB). The objective was to investigate what photography could say about the aesthetic judgements associated with such a designation. This was examined through identifying four case studies, all geographically located within the AONB, in order to explore the potential and limitations of diverse photographic methods. At each site, maps were created as part of the research thereby allowing site-specific conservation information to lead the practice. These locations were then photographed as …

Arhitectura 1950-1989. Interstitial Spaces Of Communist Romanian Architecture, Ioana Popovici Jan 2019

Arhitectura 1950-1989. Interstitial Spaces Of Communist Romanian Architecture, Ioana Popovici

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis examines the relationship between communist Romanian architecture as a politicised field of cultural production, and power embodied in the state’s institutions. While it is generally acknowledged that the cultural production in socialist Romania was undeniably impacted upon by politics, this sense of the extensive inter-conditioning between the paths of architecture and politics seems to disappear with Romania’s 1990s transition to democracy and capitalism. By adding to the nascent critical history of communist Romanian architecture, this thesis seeks to highlight the tacit transference of interaction patterns between the spheres of architecture and that of politics into contemporary practice, thereby …

The present study sought to update and validate the replacement schedules of various durable medical equipment (DME) and assistive technology (AT) commonly cited in life care plans. For life care plans used in litigation, the 1993 Daubert decision, which placed more onus on testifying experts to rely upon empirically-supported and generally accepted literature in their field, increased the need for evidence-based research. In this study, 127 sales representatives and equipment repairers across the United States were contacted to participate in a survey to explore whether replacement values found in similar research conducted in 2005, had significantly changed. Frequency data were …

Increasing The Use Of Evidence-Based Practices In Counseling: Cbt As A Supervision Modality In Private Practice Mental Health, Jerome Fischer, Diana M. Mendez

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) supervision can be applied in a private practice mental health setting. The CBT model of supervision is a good fit for a private practice mental health setting because of its action orientation and empirical grounding. The CBT modality meets the challenges of a private practice mental health setting since it is appropriate for the types of issues presented by clients in counseling. While CBT is an effective therapy to use for supervision and counseling in a private practice mental health setting, it is recommended that mental health practitioners expand their professional identity …

Effects Of Dietary Nitrate From Vegetables On Blood Pressure In Healthy Humans, Elizabeth Ashworth Jan 2019

Effects Of Dietary Nitrate From Vegetables On Blood Pressure In Healthy Humans, Elizabeth Ashworth

School of Health Professions Theses

Dietary nitrate is a naturally occurring component of vegetables and nitrate salts have been used for centuries as preservatives in processed meats. Up until recently, nitrate has been considered as a harmful contaminant. However, more recent research suggests that dietary nitrate supplements can reduce blood pressure (BP) and could be beneficial to cardiovascular health. This is important as 1 in 4 adults world-wide have hypertension, the largest single risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Three studies were conducted in order to assess the effects of dietary nitrate, obtained from vegetables, on BP in healthy humans. The first study evaluated the effect …

Fathers At Work: Challenges And Stereotypes Facing Fathers With Caregiving Responsibilities In Employment, Jasmine Kelland Jan 2019

Fathers At Work: Challenges And Stereotypes Facing Fathers With Caregiving Responsibilities In Employment, Jasmine Kelland

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study explores how caregiving fathers are perceived in contemporary employment to establish if this contributes to an understanding of the dominance of fathers in the role of ‘breadwinner’. Much existing research in this area is based in the US, largely utilising students as participants, and has limited applicability to contemporary UK fatherhood. This study employs a mixed methods design underpinned by a social constructivist standpoint, with managers and working parents as participants. Understanding regarding the perceptions of caregiving fathers is sought through exploring how such fathers are rated when they apply for work utilising online vignettes, vignette based focus …

Food Waste In Uk Households: Attitudes, Behaviours And Marketing Implications, Mihaela Bishop Jan 2019

Food Waste In Uk Households: Attitudes, Behaviours And Marketing Implications, Mihaela Bishop

Plymouth Business School Theses

Food waste is generated in large amounts across the food chain, ensuing serious environmental, social and economic consequences. Although consumers are the single most significant contributors, little is known about the drivers of food waste in households. The study explores individual attitudes towards food waste, identifies associations between psychological factors and behaviour and establishes consumers’ current understanding of food waste. This study employs mixed methods, starting with a qualitative stage using focus group discussions (7 focus groups, n=48) and following it up with a quantitative survey (411 questionnaires). The thematic analysis findings suggest that attitudes, social norms, perceived behaviour control …
