Agile And Secure Software Development: An Unfinished Story, Dave Bishop, Pam Rowland Jan 2019

Agile And Secure Software Development: An Unfinished Story, Dave Bishop, Pam Rowland

Research & Publications

Given the widespread adoption of agile methods and the rising number of software vulnerabilities, we analyze the literature with an interest in the effect of security practices on software development agility. We propose a novel taxonomy to systematize the body of knowledge around secure agile development and then organize and summarize the selected research using the new taxonomy. At a high-level we create two categories, Phase Focused and Phase Independent. The Phase Focused category is then subdivided along the traditional SDLC phases. The Phase Independent category spans all phases of the SDLC or is phase independent. We conclude that, although …

Microplastic In Aquatic Food Webs: Museum Specimens And Ingestion Experiments Reveal Controls On Microplastic Ingestion By Freshwater Fish, Loren Hou Jan 2019

Microplastic In Aquatic Food Webs: Museum Specimens And Ingestion Experiments Reveal Controls On Microplastic Ingestion By Freshwater Fish, Loren Hou

Master's Theses

Plastic is pervasive in modern economies and ecosystems. Early research suggests freshwater fish commonly ingest microplastic (particles < 5 mm), which may influence fish digestive tissues, but no studies have examined historical patterns in microplastic consumption or rates of microplastic retention in fish. We measured microplastic in digestive tissue of specimens collected and preserved over the last century (Field Museum, Chicago). We selected Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass), Notropis stramineus (sand shiner), Ictalurus punctatus (channel catfish), and Neogobius melanostomus (round goby) because each was well represented in the museum collection, with specimens from urban rivers. Specimens from 1900-2018 showed increases in microplastic concentration from the 1950's to present. in a second project, we collected round gobies from Lake Michigan in Chicago to conduct feeding experiments to measure microplastic ingestion and retention rates. the majority of microplastic was excreted within 72 hours of ingestion. Results will aid in understanding ecological interactions of microplastic and freshwater fish, informing further work on the movement of microplastic in aquatic food webs.

From The Technology Gap To The Graduation Gap: Implications Of Technology Access And Postsecondary Success, Abigail Evans Jan 2019

From The Technology Gap To The Graduation Gap: Implications Of Technology Access And Postsecondary Success, Abigail Evans

Master's Theses

The gap in technology access in the United States is indicative of the larger inequalities that continue to plague our modern society. This research project focuses on the relationship between technology access and postsecondary success. Previous studies have established there is a connection between technology access and academic success, but many questions about how and when students access technology remain unanswered. in this thesis, I gather information from disparate sources to try and draw conclusions about the current state of technology in postsecondary education. This included research on technology use patterns among numerous demographic groups, information of the social behaviors …

Perceptions And Expected Immediate Reactions To Severe Storm Displays, Ihnji Jon, Shih-Kai Huang, Michael K. Lindell

Research, Publications & Creative Work

The National Weather Service has adopted warning polygons that more specifically indicate the risk area than its previous county-wide warnings. However, these polygons are not defined in terms of numerical strike probabilities (ps). To better understand people’s interpretations of warning polygons, 167 participants were shown 23 hypothetical scenarios in one of three information conditions—polygon-only (Condition A), polygon + tornadic storm cell (Condition B), and polygon + tornadic storm cell + flanking nontornadic storm cells (Condition C). Participants judged each polygon’s ps and reported the likelihood of taking nine different response actions. The polygon-only condition replicated the …

Introduction To The Special Issue: The Challenges And Opportunities Of Including The Lgbtq Community In Catholic Education, Karen Huchting, Emily Fisher Jan 2019

Introduction To The Special Issue: The Challenges And Opportunities Of Including The Lgbtq Community In Catholic Education, Karen Huchting, Emily Fisher

Journal of Catholic Education

This special issue is dedicated to disseminating recent research about the opportunities and challenges of including the LGBTQ community in Catholic education. The relationship between Catholic educational institutions and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) can be complicated. As Catholic organizations, Catholic schools are governed by the rules of the church, and as educational institutions, Catholic schools must be responsive to the needs of students, families, and communities, as well as to changes in the larger sociopolitical landscape. LGBTQ people, whether students, parents, teachers, or administrators, exist in Catholic educational institutions, yet there has been a …

Possibilities For Trans-Affirming Policy Potential: A Case Study Of A Canadian Catholic School, Lindsay Herriot, Tonya D. Callaghan

Journal of Catholic Education

Background: Mainstream media is increasingly reporting on the relationships between Catholic and trans identities in parochial schools, particularly with regard to gendered washroom use. With greater numbers of trans youth coming out at younger ages, significant educational policy changes are being considered around how Catholic schools can or should include trans youth. Method: This study applies trans and queer theologies to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in investigating the Wilson case, which was the first known instance of a Catholic school including some affirming policy provisions for trans youth. The authors additionally collected and coded 12 news articles from a variety …

Using Software-Defined Networking And Openflow Switching To Reroute Network Traffic Dynamically Based On Traffic Volume Measurements, Ihab Al Shaikhli Jan 2019

Using Software-Defined Networking And Openflow Switching To Reroute Network Traffic Dynamically Based On Traffic Volume Measurements, Ihab Al Shaikhli

Master's Theses

Traditional switching and routing have been very effective for network packet delivery but does create some constraints. for example, all packets from a given source to a given destination must always take the same path. Within a traditional Ethernet network, a tree topology must be used. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has the potential to bypass this tree-topology limitation by placing the control of the switches and their forwarding tables under a central device called a controller. SDN also allows for sets of controllers. the controller can identify individual network flows and issue commands to the switches to, in effect, assign individual …

“Musicalized Identities”: South Asian Musical Third Space Of Enunciation In Britain, Hassen Zriba Jan 2019

“Musicalized Identities”: South Asian Musical Third Space Of Enunciation In Britain, Hassen Zriba

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Within a multicultural society like Britain, cultural identity has become a pivotal concern for the nation’s various ethnic minorities. South Asian minorities, notably, the third generation, have adopted different strategies of integration within the mainstream British society while attempting to preserve their cultural idiosyncrasies. South Asian identities or what can be generally called “Asianness” manifested themselves in different socio-cultural expressions. Music has been one of those media of cultural and identity expressions. This article argues that music can be deemed as a “Third Space of Enunciation” forthe new generations of ethnic minorities in general and South Asian ones in particular.Ethnic …

Reconnaissance Of ‘Difference’ In Cognitive Maps: Authenticating Happily Ever Afterin Julia Quinn’S To Sir Philip With Love, Javaria Farooqui, Rabia Ashraf Jan 2019

Reconnaissance Of ‘Difference’ In Cognitive Maps: Authenticating Happily Ever Afterin Julia Quinn’S To Sir Philip With Love, Javaria Farooqui, Rabia Ashraf

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This study explores differences in individual cognitive mapping of the protagonists in Julia Quinn’s novel, To Sir Philip with Love. A qualitative analysis of the maps, cartographed on physiological and psychological planes, finds them to be diverse in nature. A “difference” is developed, step by step, in the mental cognitive mapping of the female protagonist of Eloise and in the physical cognitive maps of the character the male protagonist, Philip. Nonetheless, the thesis lies in the inherent creativity caused by the collision of two varied cognitions. Analysis of these cognitions involves the creation of these characters according to the basic …

‘And’ Is Not Always A Logical Conjunction, Miguel López-Astorga Jan 2019

‘And’ Is Not Always A Logical Conjunction, Miguel López-Astorga

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The mental models theory has shown that the logical connectives do not always refer to the interpretation assigned to them by standard logic. Several papers authored by its proponents clearly reveal that in the cases of the conditional and disjunction. In this paper, following a methodology of analysis akin to that of the mental models theory, I try to check whether or not the same applies to conjunction, and my conclusion is that, indeed, this last connective can be linked to any of the sixteen possible interpretations that a logical operator relating two clauses can have.

Manipulating The Media: Victorian Lawyers, Transportation, And The Creation Of Panic Over Habitual Criminals, Judith Rowbotham

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article explores the largely forgotten attempts by key members of the legal profession in mid-nineteenth England to bring about a government rethink on the decision to abandon transportation. By creating alarm and despondency about the danger posed by introduction of the ticket-of-leave system to the United Kingdom, they hoped to generate popular pressure for a continuation of transportation overseas. To achieve this, the legal profession made use of their influence over the content of crime reportage to challenge the assurances given by figures like Colonel Jebb about the positive early results of domestic penal servitude and to generate widespread …

Reading Victorian Working-Class Expectations Of Fatherhood In Trials Of Paternal Negligence, Alesha Lister Jan 2019

Reading Victorian Working-Class Expectations Of Fatherhood In Trials Of Paternal Negligence, Alesha Lister

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article examines the complex dynamics of class and gender in criminal proceedings against of men charged with feloniously causing the death of their children through neglect of their paternal duties. The intersection of ideas about respectability, masculinity and fatherhood are explored through a range of archival material generated by trials of men charged with fatally neglecting their children at the Central Criminal Court of London between 1800 and 1913. I argue that the behaviour of men accused of neglect-based homicide not only fell short of middle-class expectations of fatherhood but contravened customary expectations of fatherhood within London's working-class communities. …

Think About It: The Role Of Think Tanks In Public Debate And Policy-Making, Shana E. Zelenka Jan 2019

Think About It: The Role Of Think Tanks In Public Debate And Policy-Making, Shana E. Zelenka

Senior Independent Study Theses

This thesis explores the role of think tank research in Members of Congress’s public facing communication. I theorize that legislators’ policy preferences already exist and shape the think tank research they choose to discuss instead of think tank research shaping these policy preferences. Many scholars seek to understand the influence of think tanks on policy, but, in doing so, have overlooked the rhetorical use of think tank information by Members of Congress. By addressing these channels of communication through analyzing public facing communicative platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and Floor Speeches, I hope to contribute to think tank research in understanding …

The Politics Of Exclusionary And Inclusionary Zoning: The Road To Residential Segregation, Emily M. Partika Jan 2019

The Politics Of Exclusionary And Inclusionary Zoning: The Road To Residential Segregation, Emily M. Partika

Senior Independent Study Theses

This paper aims to explore why some suburbs adopt land use policies that encourage exclusivity and segregation, meanwhile others adopt land use policies that encourage inclusivity and integration. Specifically, I analyze the social, economic, and political factors that motivate the adoption of certain land use policies. This research extends Charles Tiebout’s public choice theory in conjunction with Michael Danielson’s theory on local government autonomy over land use regulation. These theories combine to explore the understudied relationship of median voter pressure on local government to explain how political actors adopt policies motivated by pressure from from residents, or median voters. Additionally, …

Do You Want To Run A Regression? Nah, I Think I’Ll Dance One Instead: Physicalizing Econometrics, Rachel Lau Jan 2019

Do You Want To Run A Regression? Nah, I Think I’Ll Dance One Instead: Physicalizing Econometrics, Rachel Lau

Senior Independent Study Theses

This project asked how can one make use of an econometric tool, specifically the regression model, as a source for choreography. Through integrating my research on dance choreography and econometrics, I created a dance piece that demonstrates the numerical relationships of a realized regression equation. The dance was separated into three sections, with each examining an econometric concept. Taking the primary question at hand one step further, this project also explored how this approach to choreography can be generalized so that almost any regression model can be a choreographic tool. Subsequently, a guideline was devised to provide other choreographers various …

Optimizing Timber Harvest Value: A Dynamic Programming Investigation, Kayleigh T. Dietz Jan 2019

Optimizing Timber Harvest Value: A Dynamic Programming Investigation, Kayleigh T. Dietz

Senior Independent Study Theses

Operations research models have been and continue to be integral to the implementation of forest management strategies. Fundamental operations research models such as linear and dynamic programming have respective advantages and disadvantages when applied to any forest system. An overview of five fundamental operations research models are provided in terms of a timber harvesting system. Timber production management is a branch of forest management that seeks to optimize the economic benefits of harvesting timber. The time-stage nature of timber harvesting systems makes dynamic programming a particularly useful model for timber production management. Thus, dynamic programming is the primary model discussed …

Exploring Topics Of The Art Gallery Problem, Megan Vuich Jan 2019

Exploring Topics Of The Art Gallery Problem, Megan Vuich

Senior Independent Study Theses

Created in the 1970's, the Art Gallery Problem seeks to answer the question of how many security guards are necessary to fully survey the floor plan of any building. These floor plans are modeled by polygons, with guards represented by points inside these shapes. Shortly after the creation of the problem, it was theorized that for guards whose positions were limited to the polygon's vertices, the floor of n/3 guards are sufficient to watch any type of polygon, where n is the number of the polygon's vertices. Two proofs accompanied this theorem, drawing from concepts of computational geometry and graph …

Applying Gadamer: An Evaluation Of Interpretations Of The Confucian Analects By Different Schools Under The Light Of Gadamerian Hermeneutics, Yifeng Xu Jan 2019

Applying Gadamer: An Evaluation Of Interpretations Of The Confucian Analects By Different Schools Under The Light Of Gadamerian Hermeneutics, Yifeng Xu

Senior Independent Study Theses

This thesis attempts to analyse and evaluate several interpretations of the Confucian Analects under the light of Gadamerian hermeneutics. In chapter 1, I explicate Gadamerian hermeneutics and analyse Gadamer’s hermeneutical view. In chapter 2, I introduce a challenge to Gadamer’s theory regarding the problem of objectivity, give Gadamer a limited defence, and then reconstruct Gadamerian hermeneutics in order to answer the challenge. Chapter 3 deals with some further concerns about the application of Gadamerian hermeneutics in terms of evaluating interpretations. Chapter 4 and 5 are spent on analysing two groups of interpretations of the Confucian Analects as well as the …
