Relationship Of Self-Construal To Perceived Availability And Seeking Of Social Support By International Students Studying Abroad In The United States, Yue Zhang

Masters Theses

This study was created to examine the relationship between different self-construals and the behavior of seeking social support or the perceived availability of social support. We recruited 84 international students who currently study abroad in the United States. Participants completed the Singelis Self-construal Scale (SCS; Singelis,1994) and a Social Support Scale created for the current study. The SCS measured the degree to which participants’ self-construals are Independent (IND) or Interdependent (INT). The Social Support Scale presented five different scenarios and asked participants to rate activities responding to two types of social support (tangible support and emotional support). I predicted that …

Complex Varieties As Minima, Richard Koss Jan 2019

Complex Varieties As Minima, Richard Koss

Masters Theses

We will explore various numeric methods of finding roots of an analytic function over some open set of the complex plane. We will discuss a method of visually observing the roots, a gradient descent method for finding the roots of an analytic function, a gradient descent method for solving systems of analytic functions, and finally a method of descent that uses osculating circles to find roots of an analytic function. Of particular interest to this thesis are roots of complex polynomials. There will be examples, code snippets, and outputs of programs to illustrate all of these methods.

Gifted Education In Elementary Schools, Danielle Wilkinson Jan 2019

Gifted Education In Elementary Schools, Danielle Wilkinson

Masters Theses

Gifted students have enormous potential, yet there are few consistent opportunities for gifted students to receive challenging instruction. Drawing upon literature detailing the history of gifted education nationally and in Illinois, this study sought to find what services were currently offered to Illinois students, and if the opportunities for gifted students were related to a district’s state funding tier. Findings indicated that the elementary gifted services being offered and the ways in which eligibility is determined were inconsistent among districts. In addition, many districts who offer gifted services are using local/community funds in order to provide services regardless of their …

Targeting The Bcl-2 Family In B Cell Lymphoma., Clare M. Adams, Sean Clark-Garvey, Pierluigi Porcu, Christine M. Eischen

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Although lymphoma is a very heterogeneous group of biologically complex malignancies, tumor cells across all B cell lymphoma subtypes share a set of underlying traits that promote the development and sustain malignant B cells. One of these traits, the ability to evade apoptosis, is essential for lymphoma development. Alterations in the Bcl-2 family of proteins, the key regulators of apoptosis, is a hallmark of B cell lymphoma. Significant efforts have been made over the last 30 years to advance knowledge of the biology, molecular mechanisms, and therapeutic potential of targeting Bcl-2 family members. In this review, we will highlight the …

Risk-Taking Behaviors As Predicted By (Mal)Adaptive Functioning In College Students: A Look Into Emotional Adjustment, Hillary Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Risk-taking behaviors emerge, increase, and peak during adolescence and have shown to continue into late adolescence. Research has begun to explore how some forms of risk-taking may be normative and adaptive. The aim of this study is to look at how social, academic, and occupational functioning are related to risk-behaviors, as measured by risk-favorability and reported risk-taking history, and emotional adjustment in a college sample (N=314). Risk was assessed using self-report and an implicit task, both of which were moderately correlated. Both risk measures were negatively correlated with self-report measures of adaptive functioning and emotional adjustment.A series of mediation analyses …

Farm To Label: A Critique Of Consumer Activism In The Sustainable Food Movement, Olivia Whitener Jan 2019

Farm To Label: A Critique Of Consumer Activism In The Sustainable Food Movement, Olivia Whitener

Pomona Senior Theses

“Local,” “organic,” “natural,” and “Fairtrade” are just several of the many claims adorning the food products that line grocery store shelves. These promises of environmental sustainability and social responsibility are pillars of the “good food revolution” sweeping the nation as consumers demand alternatives to the products of the industrial food system. Green consumerism, the premise that consumer demand for environmentally sustainable goods will bring about ecologically beneficial outcomes, is at the heart of the sustainable food movement. This thesis takes a critical look at the operation of green consumerism in the food system. It explores the ideology and shortcomings of …

Let's Get Sorted: The Path To Zero Waste At Pomona College, Sara Sherburne Jan 2019

Let's Get Sorted: The Path To Zero Waste At Pomona College, Sara Sherburne

Pomona Senior Theses

This senior thesis in environmental analysis explores the Zero Waste ideal and its practical application to a college campus. Given the growing global trash crisis and its grave environmental, social and economic consequences, the Zero Waste movement argues for a holistic shift from ‘end of pipe’ disposal practices to those that promote the cyclical use of materials, with little-to-no matter ending up in the landfill or incinerator. Cities and colleges around the world have adopted these Zero Waste goals in an effort to function as more sustainable, efficient and moral entities. With a case study of Pomona College, I assess …

In The Eye Of The Storm: Houston After Hurricane Harvey, Brandon Tolentino-Serrano Jan 2019

In The Eye Of The Storm: Houston After Hurricane Harvey, Brandon Tolentino-Serrano

Pomona Senior Theses

Situated in one of the wettest climates in America, Houston, TX has had a long history of heavy rains and unprecedented floods. Unfortunately, floods have become more common over the last few decades as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of hurricanes around the globe. To complicate matters further, Houston has quickly sprawled to accommodate over 2.5 billion people. Rapid urbanization has rendered the landscape even more susceptible to floods through excess concretization and watershed disturbance. This thesis traces the history of the Bayou City in relation to the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey. By mapping out the original …

Changing Oceanic Conditions On The Foraging Patterns Of Cassin’S Auklets, Ptychoramphus Aleuticuschanging Oceanic Conditions On The Foraging Patterns Of Cassin’S Auklets, Ptychoramphus Aleuticus, Clare Flynn Jan 2019

Changing Oceanic Conditions On The Foraging Patterns Of Cassin’S Auklets, Ptychoramphus Aleuticuschanging Oceanic Conditions On The Foraging Patterns Of Cassin’S Auklets, Ptychoramphus Aleuticus, Clare Flynn

Pomona Senior Theses

Cassin’s auklet (Ptychoramphus aleuticus) reproductive success has been monitored on Southeast Farallon Island (SEFI) for the past 45 years. Their productivity has varied with oceanic conditions. The purpose of this study is to connect how oceanic conditions affect Cassin’s auklet foraging behaviors. The California Current System (CCS) can normally maintain high plankton productivity, and thus high seabird productivity, because of coastal upwelling. I hypothesized that lower upwelling and/or higher sea surface temperatures (SSTs) lead Cassin’s auklets to spend more time on intensive foraging behaviors such as flying and diving, and have less time to spend resting. I also hypothesized that …

Exploring Transit-Based Environmental Injustices In San Gabriel Valley And Greater Los Angeles, Bailey Lai Jan 2019

Exploring Transit-Based Environmental Injustices In San Gabriel Valley And Greater Los Angeles, Bailey Lai

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis attempts to disentangle the multilayered interactions between Greater Los Angeles’s history, its built environment, and its inequitable treatment of different peoples, focusing on how transportation in surrounding suburban communities like San Gabriel Valley has developed in relation to the inner city of Los Angeles. Greater Los Angeles contains a long, winding trajectory of transit-based environmental injustices, from the indigenous societies being overtaken by the Spanish missions, to the railroads and streetcars boosting the farmlands and urban growth of Los Angeles, leading into the decline of transit and rise of automobile-oriented suburbia. Within the San Gabriel Valley, the suburban …

"But It's Not Fair!": Effects Of Experimenter Familiarity On Inequity Aversion In Dogs, Kia Radovanovic Jan 2019

"But It's Not Fair!": Effects Of Experimenter Familiarity On Inequity Aversion In Dogs, Kia Radovanovic

Senior Independent Study Theses

Inequity aversion, defined as having a negative reaction to unfair treatment, was considered to be a uniquely human trait for decades but has since been found to exist in a variety of animals, including primates and dogs. Although dogs have been shown to be affected in their decision making based on their familiarity with the humans testing them, this effect had not been previously examined in regard to their responses to inequity aversion. This study aimed to partially replicate the results shown in the first ever study to find inequity aversion in dogs and to further investigate whether their responses …

Companion Sequences Associated To The$R$-Fibonacci Sequence: Algebraic And Combinatorial Properties, Sadjia Abbad, Hacene Belbachir, Benali Benzaghou Jan 2019

Companion Sequences Associated To The$R$-Fibonacci Sequence: Algebraic And Combinatorial Properties, Sadjia Abbad, Hacene Belbachir, Benali Benzaghou

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

It is well known that the companion sequence of the Fibonacci sequence is Lucas's sequence. For the generalized Fibonacci sequences, the companion sequence is not unique. Several authors proposed different definitions, and they are in a certain sense all good. Our purpose is to introduce a family of companion sequences for some generalized Fibonacci sequence: the $r$-Fibonacci sequence. We evaluate the generating functions and give some applications, and we exhibit convolution relations that generalize some known identities such as Cassini's. Afterwards, we calculate the sums of their terms using matrix methods. Next, we propose a $q$-analogue and extend the definition …

Nonnegative Integer Solutions Of The Equation $F_{N}-F_{M}=5^{A}$, Fati̇h Erduvan, Refi̇k Keski̇n Jan 2019

Nonnegative Integer Solutions Of The Equation $F_{N}-F_{M}=5^{A}$, Fati̇h Erduvan, Refi̇k Keski̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, we solve the Diophantine equation in the title in nonnegative integers $m,n,$ and $a$. The solutions are given by $F_{1}-F_{0}=F_{2}-F_{0}=F_{3}-F_{2}=F_{3}-F_{1}=F_{4}-F_{3}=5^{0}$ and $F_{5}-F_{0}=F_{6}-F_{4}=F_{7}-F_{6}=5.$ Then we give a conjecture that says that if $a\geq 2$ and $p>7$ is prime, then the equation $F_{n}-F_{m}=p^{a}$ has no solutions in nonnegative integers $m,n.$

On Wiener's Tauberian Theorems And Convolution For Oscillatory Integral Operators, Luis Pinheiro De Castro, Rita Correia Guerra, Nguyen Minh Tuan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The main aim of this work is to obtain Paley--Wiener and Wiener's Tauberian results associated with an oscillatory integral operator, which depends on cosine and sine kernels, as well as to introduce a consequent new convolution. Additionally, a new Young-type inequality for the obtained convolution is proven, and a new Wiener-type algebra is also associated with this convolution.

A New Solution Of Pair Matrix Equations With Arbitrary Triangular Fuzzy Numbers, Wan Suhana Wan Daud, Nazihah Ahmad, Ghassan Malkawi Jan 2019

A New Solution Of Pair Matrix Equations With Arbitrary Triangular Fuzzy Numbers, Wan Suhana Wan Daud, Nazihah Ahmad, Ghassan Malkawi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Pair matrix equations have numerous applications in control system engineering, such as for stability analysis of linear control systems and also for reduction of nonlinear control system models. There are some situations in which the classical pair matrix equations are not well equipped to deal with the uncertainty problem during the process of stability analysis and reduction in control system engineering. Thus, this study presents a new algorithm for solving fully fuzzy pair matrix equations where the parameters of the equations are arbitrary triangular fuzzy numbers. The fuzzy Kronecker product and fuzzy $Vec$-operator are employed to transform the fully fuzzy …
