Upper Ocean Distribution Of Glacial Meltwater In The Amundsen Sea, Antarctica, Louise C. Biddle, Brice Loose, Karen J. Heywood Jan 2019

Upper Ocean Distribution Of Glacial Meltwater In The Amundsen Sea, Antarctica, Louise C. Biddle, Brice Loose, Karen J. Heywood

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Pine Island Ice Shelf, in the Amundsen Sea, is losing mass due to increased heat transport by warm ocean water penetrating beneath the ice shelf and causing basal melt. Tracing this warm deep water and the resulting glacial meltwater can identify changes in melt rate and the regions most affected by the increased input of this freshwater. Here, optimum multiparameter analysis is used to deduce glacial meltwater fractions from independent water mass characteristics (standard hydrographic observations, noble gases, and oxygen isotopes), collected during a ship-based campaign in the eastern Amundsen Sea in February–March 2014. Noble gases (neon, argon, krypton, and …

Microstructure Evolution Of Chalcogenide Materials Via Molecular Dynamics, Sharmin Abdullah Jan 2019

Microstructure Evolution Of Chalcogenide Materials Via Molecular Dynamics, Sharmin Abdullah

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The properties of a material are defined by its granular microstructure which is determined by its grain evolution and the types of grain boundaries present in the structure. For example, the performance of Cadmium Sulfide/Cadmium Telluride (CdS/CdTe) solar cells can be affected by the presence of grain boundaries which makes the study of grain structure evolution a very important part of solar cell performance optimization. Grain boundary mobilities are important properties in material science and engineering as they determine grain structures under given processing and operating conditions.

In this thesis, several computational tools were used to analyze the formation and …

Confidence Intervals For The Expected P-Value, Emmanuel Kofi Abrefa Jan 2019

Confidence Intervals For The Expected P-Value, Emmanuel Kofi Abrefa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The p-value is widely used in many application fields. In common practice, a scientific finding is deemed statistically significant if its resultant p-value is less than a pre-specified significance level, for example α = 0.05, albeit many statistically significant results are not reproducible in new studies. Mixed reasons including misuses, abuses, misunderstanding and misinterpretation arouse intensive debates and conservatives around the p-value from time to time over the years. Yet no reasonable solutions have been proposed. In this research, we make efforts to close the gap by advocating the use of confidence level for the expected p-value p0. This allows …

Our world is in desperate need of Ethical Leaders. In turmoil, it tumbles toward the abyss of hatred, violence, and anarchy. The cry for leaders with an authentic ethical agenda dedicated to the common good rises, and it assumes increasing urgency. This contribution is meant to honor John and June Mary Makdisi, intellectual and moral leaders of the academy. Their upcoming retirement provides the welcome occasion to reflect on responsible leadership in the necessarily joint universe of law and morality. This essay undertakes to delimit the proper understanding of ethical leadership, provides historical examples, and explores the question as to …

The Faith And Morals Of Justic Antonin Scalia, David F. Forte Jan 2019

The Faith And Morals Of Justic Antonin Scalia, David F. Forte

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

It is because of Justice Scalia's suspicion of philosophy and of history that he becomes an outspoken textualist. But why should text carry greater authority? Why should the written word, rather than evolving tradition, be of higher authority, particularly to a Roman Catholic? To understand Antonin Scalia's affirmation of the centrality of text, we must, as many already have, seek to find out how the man viewed his religion and how he practiced it.

Human Dignity: The Clandestine Factor In Prosecutorial Discretion, Tamara F. Lawson Jan 2019

Human Dignity: The Clandestine Factor In Prosecutorial Discretion, Tamara F. Lawson

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

Justice and human dignity have an organic and symbiotic relationship. The American Bar Association's Functions and Duties of the Prosecutor Standard 3-1.2(a) outlines that "[t]he prosecutor is an administrator of justice . . . [and] should exercise sound discretion and independent judgement in the performance of the prosecution function." The ABA standards further prohibit improper bias2 and proscribe a duty to report and respond to prosecutorial misconduct.3 ABA Standard 3-1.2(b) states: "The primary duty of the prosecutor is to seek justice within the bounds of the law, not merely to convict." 4 Although rarely openly discussed, I ask now, is …

Humility: Rooted In Relationship, Reaching For Justice, Dawne Moon, Theresa W. Tobin Jan 2019

Humility: Rooted In Relationship, Reaching For Justice, Dawne Moon, Theresa W. Tobin

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Scholars who study humility tend to think of it in highly individualized terms, such as an absence of vanity or an accurate self-assessment. Individuating definitions can lead to such jarring concepts as the “humble white supremacist” (Roberts and Wood 2007). Qualitative sociological research in the (predominantly North American) evangelical movement to accept and affirm lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) identities, same-sex marriage, and sex/gender transition reveals that humility is not simply the awareness that “I could be wrong.” That awareness is rooted in what we have found to be humility’s defining element, concern to foster relationship. These …

Exploring Paths For Water Services And Human Capabilities In U.S.-Mexico Border Colonias, Chilton Tippin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Thesis examines causes and consequences of water insecurity in colonias on the U.S.-Mexico border and explores potential pathways for improving situations wherein low-income households lack reliable access to water and sewer services. Colonias are low-income, rural and/or semi-rural communities that lack basic services, such as paved streets, water, and sewer. Through in-depth interviews, surveys, and ethnographic observations, the research presented here describes needs, desires, and capabilities of residents in two high-needs Texas colonias. First, findings elucidate the lived experiences of water insecurity in colonias households, leading to an argument that lacking water access constitutes a nexus, wherein water insecurity …

Study Of Multielectron Redox Chemistry In Bimetallic Complexes And Metal-Free Macrocycles, Nancy Rodriguez Lopez Jan 2019

Study Of Multielectron Redox Chemistry In Bimetallic Complexes And Metal-Free Macrocycles, Nancy Rodriguez Lopez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Multielectron redox chemistry is fundamental for the activation of small molecules (e.g. H2O, CO2, CO, N2). Although these processes are of great importance, they are not well understood. Unravelling the mechanisms of electron transfer and its principles is essential for the design and development of efficient catalysts. Our approach towards the understanding of multielectron redox chemistry includes theoretical study of mechanistic pathways in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by metal-free porphyrinoids, the study of electronic communication in non-symmetric multimetallic two-state models (D–B–A) and the tuning of the electronic properties of bimetallic systems (Mo, and Au) by ligand control.

Indigenous Masculinities And The Tarascan Borderlands In Sixteenth-Century Michoacán, Daniel Santana Jan 2019

Indigenous Masculinities And The Tarascan Borderlands In Sixteenth-Century Michoacán, Daniel Santana

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation studies the hypermasculine narratives related to the expansion of the Tarascan state and its borderlands in early colonial Michoacán. Colonial texts such as the Relación de Michoacán and the relaciones geográficas depict the ascendance of the powerful Uacúsecha dynasty whose solar deity and male rulers oversaw the conquest of the Lake Pátzcuaro Basin and succeeded in holding back the Mexica (Aztecs) from penetrating their territories. The Dissertation pays particular attention to how contemporary political events, namely the Spanish conquest of Michoacán, endemic warfare in center-west Mexico, and political rivalries amongst Indigenous elites, influenced these accounts. Consequently, these narratives …

Dust Storms And The Dispersal Of Aquatic Invertebrates In The Chihuahuan Desert Ecoregion, Jose Rivas Jr. Jan 2019

Dust Storms And The Dispersal Of Aquatic Invertebrates In The Chihuahuan Desert Ecoregion, Jose Rivas Jr.

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Chihuahuan Desert surrounding El Paso, Texas is one of the most intense sources of dust in the Western Hemisphere. Within this vast desert are ephemeral wetlands with micrometazoan propagules contained within their sediment egg banks. Dispersal of aquatic microinvertebrates between habitats is vital for the success of their populations. Passive dispersal of the propagules provides an escape mechanism from unfavorable conditions. Upon desiccation of these habitats, windstorms can potentially transport propagules mixed within entrained sediments across regional scales. To study this process, I collected falling sediment from 91 windstorms, with 59 samples collected at the University of Texas at …

The Role Of P62/Imp2 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma Progression, Mengtao Xing

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The family of insulin- like growth factor 2 mRNA binding proteins (IMPs) contains three members: IMP1, p62/IMP2 and IMP3. All these proteins are oncofetal proteins, expressed during embryogenesis and lost in most tissues in adults. However, p62/IMP2 were found overexpressed in various cancers but its function in carcinogenesis remains to be investigated. Our previous studies found that p62/IMP2 was not only overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, but also overexpressed in HCC cell lines. To explore the biological roles of p62/IMP2 in HCC progression, p62/IMP2 was knockout in two p62/IMP2 positive HCC cell lines (SNU449, HepG2). Due to the low …

Bayesian Analysis Of Ordinal Outcomes Through Latent Variable Approach, Benard Owusu Dechi Jan 2019

Bayesian Analysis Of Ordinal Outcomes Through Latent Variable Approach, Benard Owusu Dechi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modeling and predicting of ordinal outcomes have become essential study to many statisticians due to the numerous forms of data encountered in real life, which has such format. Many authors have proposed variant methods in modeling these type of data either in classical approaches (McCullagh, 1980a) or from the Bayesian perspective (Albert and Chib, 1993) (Cowles et al., 1996). A commonly adopted way of modeling ordinal data is via an underlying continuous latent variable. That is to say that the observed ordinal outcomes have a correspondence with the latent variable through some set of cutoff points. Thus, it can be …

Partisanship As Identity: The Hype, The Myth, And The Reality Of Polarization In The American Electorate, Mark Stinson Jan 2019

Partisanship As Identity: The Hype, The Myth, And The Reality Of Polarization In The American Electorate, Mark Stinson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This work examines the existence and extent of polarization in the American electorate as a contemporary phenomenon based in hyper-partisan or “tribal” identity rather than as arising out of a more conventional ideological framework. This approach allows for the bypassing of more conventional questions such as the meaning of “liberal” or “conservative” or “in virtue of what is someone a liberal/conservative?”, and instead allows acceptance of a respondent’s ideological or partisan self-identification as a convenient label which does not require a monolithic set of political beliefs for its basis, although the prior or subsequent adoption of such a set of …

Machine-Learning And 3d Point-Cloud Based Signal Power Path Loss Model For The Deployment Of Wireless Communication Systems, Yunus Egi, Carlos E. Otero

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Modeling signal power path loss (SPPL) for deployment of wireless communication systems (WCSs) is one of the most time consuming and expensive processes that require data collections during link budget analysis. Radio frequency (RF) engineers mainly employ either deterministic or stochastic approaches for the estimation of SPPL. In the case of stochastic approach, empirical propagation models use predefined estimation parameters for different environments such as reference distance path loss PL(d0)(dB), path loss exponent (n), and log-normal shadowing (Xσ with N(σ, μ = 0)). Since empirical models broadly classify the environment under urban, suburban, and rural area, they do not take …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The high resolution of multidimensional space-time measurements and enormity of data readout counts in applications such as particle tracking in high-energy physics (HEP) is becoming nowadays a major challenge. In this work, we propose combining dimension reduction techniques with quantum information processing for application in domains that generate large volumes of data such as HEP. More specifically, we propose using quantum wavelet transform (QWT) to reduce the dimensionality of high spatial resolution data. The quantum wavelet transform takes advantage of the principles of quantum mechanics to achieve reductions in computation time while processing exponentially larger amount of information. We develop …
