Using Twitter To Support Reflective Learning In An Asynchronous Online Course, Tian Luo, Smruti J. Shah, Helen Crompton
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to further our understanding of the use of Twitter for promoting reflective learning. Specifically, this study investigated how students participate in Twitter-supported activities, what type of knowledge are manifested when Twitter is used to reflect on the course readings, and how students perceive the Twitter-supported activities. The data showed that Twitter was successful in keeping the learners engaged in the reflective discussion activities for a prolonged period compared to Blackboard. Students overall had a positive perception towards the integration of Twitter to support reflection and discussion along with active participation. Twitter was effective in …
Reddit As An Analogy For Scholarly Publishing And The Constructed, Contextual Nature Of Authority, Anna M. White
Reddit As An Analogy For Scholarly Publishing And The Constructed, Contextual Nature Of Authority, Anna M. White
Communications in Information Literacy
This paper provides an overview of how the social news site Reddit can be used as an example of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education threshold concept “Authority is Constructed and Contextual.” It posits that the construction and context of authority in the sense of Wilson’s concept of cognitive authority is in the inherent structure of Reddit and that students can benefit from an example that easily links their personal and academic lives—a connection not always made when discussing authority in peer-reviewed publications or databases.

Although the importance of mentor teachers in clinical teacher preparation is well established, few researchers explore the social identity development of these individuals. Through our study we contribute to the body of research by exploring mentor teachers' social identity development through the concept of Apprenticeship of Observation - specifically, how they felt their own mentoring experiences influenced their approaches to mentoring. The multi-case study includes findings about mentoring beliefs and practices during the laboratory school component of an Alternate Route to Licensure program. Incorporating semi-structured interviews and video analysis, the findings demonstrate how four mentor teachers' prior experiences as mentees …

Market Value Analysis Of Takashi Murakami's Artwork Under Howard Becker's Theory, Liu Yi-Ding
Market Value Analysis Of Takashi Murakami's Artwork Under Howard Becker's Theory, Liu Yi-Ding
MA Theses
This paper is an analysis about the artist Takashi Murakami. As a representative of the corporate artist, he is favored by the Art business world while being criticized by many people. This paper adopts American sociologist Howard Becker's art world theory as a research tool to observe that the construction of Murakami and his art market is not the growth of genius, but the result of collective cooperation. Based on two decades of data on the art trade, Murakami has made his unique brand of ultra-flat theory and otaku work. These labels, along with internalization and external marketing, eventually gave …
Teacher Perceptions On Advisory Model At The Middle Level Through The Lens Of Conflict And Connection, Emili L. Brosnan
Teacher Perceptions On Advisory Model At The Middle Level Through The Lens Of Conflict And Connection, Emili L. Brosnan
Student Work
In education, we seek to prepare students in a variety of facets. In order to prepare those students, we must look at a multitude of different factors in regard to that preparation. As students continue through their educational career, their time with the teachers that are educating them often decreases. In order to continue to advocate for students and build skills with students, we have seen a shift to focus on student relationships as well as curriculum. Using data collected with Pianta’s Student-Teacher Relationship Scale-Short Form and open-ended questions, this study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of the current middle …

A Comparison Of Techniques For Estimating Ndvi For Agricultural Intervention Impact Assessment, Ronan Lucey
A Comparison Of Techniques For Estimating Ndvi For Agricultural Intervention Impact Assessment, Ronan Lucey
Theses
In the context of global environmental change, food security is a major concern for Nepal. Agricultural interventions have been performed in Nepal with a goal of increasing crop productivity to combat food insecurity. In this study, we compare two techniques for estimating NDVI, serving as a proxy for agricultural productivity, over fields in western Nepal - a Multi-Linear Regression approach and a Random Forest approach. Assessment of agricultural productivity is important for understanding the effectiveness of agricultural interventions. The methodology utilizes space-borne remote sensing and surface meteorology datasets to address three research questions: 1) can these datasets be utilized along …

The CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance
The current movement toward open data and open science does not fully engage with Indigenous Peoples rights and interests. Existing principles within the open data movement (e.g. FAIR: findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) primarily focus on characteristics of data that will facilitate increased data sharing among entities while ignoring power differentials and historical contexts. The emphasis on greater data sharing alone creates a tension for Indigenous Peoples who are also asserting greater control over the application and use of Indigenous data and Indigenous Knowledge for collective benefit.
This includes the right to create value …

Chemistry Faculty Research
Nickel-containing enzymes such as methyl coenzyme M reductase (MCR) and carbon monoxide dehydrogenase/acetyl coenzyme A synthase (CODH/ACS) play a critical role in global energy conversion reactions, with significant contributions to carbon-centered processes. These enzymes are implied to cycle through a series of nickel-based organometallic intermediates during catalysis, though identification of these intermediates remains challenging. In this work, we have developed and characterized a nickel-containing metalloprotein that models the methyl-bound organometallic intermediates proposed in the native enzymes. Using a nickel(I)-substituted azurin mutant, we demonstrate that alkyl binding occurs via nucleophilic addition of methyl iodide as a methyl donor. The paramagnetic Ni …

Light And Perspective: Essays From The Mormon Theology Seminar On 1 Nephi 1 And Jacob 7, Kevin Christensen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Mormon Theology Seminar has produced two volumes of essays exploring 1 Nephi 1 on Lehi’s initial visions, and Jacob 7 on the encounter with Sherem. These essays provide valuable insights from a range of perspectives and raise questions for further discussion both of issues raised and regarding different paradigms in which scholars operate that readers must navigate.

Review: Jonathan A. Stapley. The Power Of Godliness: Mormon Liturgy And Cosmology. New York: Oxford University Press, 2018., Matthew Bowman
Mormon Studies Review
Jonathan Stapley’s new book is only 129 pages of text, but it feels much longer. This is not, happily, because the prose slogs. Rather it is one of those books that makes every word count. There is no fluff here, only finely sanded insight after insight, with all redundancy polished away. Stapley’s strengths are twofold. First, his archival work is unparalleled. For every assertion he has an anecdote. He meticulously marks fine nuances in opinion among his subjects, and those subjects are as frequently obscure figures like Steven Markham, John Steele, or Margaret Anderton as they are more familiar Mormons …
“And They Shall Be Had Again”: Onomastic Allusions To Joseph In Moses 1:41 In View Of The So-Called Canon Formula, Matthew L. Bowen
“And They Shall Be Had Again”: Onomastic Allusions To Joseph In Moses 1:41 In View Of The So-Called Canon Formula, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Moses 1:41 echoes or plays on the etymological meaning of the name Joseph — “may he [Yahweh] add,” as the Lord foretells to Moses the raising up of a future figure through whom the Lord’s words, after having been “taken” (away) from the book that Moses would write, “shall be had again among the children of men.” Moses 1:41 anticipates and employs language reminiscent of the so-called biblical canon formulas, possible additions to biblical texts meant to ensure the texts’ stability by warning against “adding” or “diminishing” (i.e., “taking away”) from them (e.g., Deuteronomy 4:2; 5:22 [MT 5:18]; 12:32 [MT …

Nice Miss Wise is trying to contain Crazed Miss Wise as I reprimand Walker for the umpteenth time. Apparently, my eyes give me away.
Converting The Saints: A Study Of Religious Rivalry In America By Charles Randall Paul, Ronald E. Bartholomew
Converting The Saints: A Study Of Religious Rivalry In America By Charles Randall Paul, Ronald E. Bartholomew
BYU Studies
Charles Randall Paul, the founder and president of the Foundation of Religious Diplomacy, has established himself in the academy as an expert in religion and philosophy on engaging differences. Paul’s book Converting the Saints looks at religious conflict by analyzing encounters between early-twentieth-century Protestants and Latter-day Saints. During this time, Protestants served several missions to Utah in an attempt to convert Latter-day Saints back to mainstream Christianity. Paul looks at the conflicts that inevitably arose between the two religious traditions and through his analysis proposes a new theory of conflict engagement that turns destructive conflict into constructive, peaceful engagement. In …

Administrative Records: Council Of Fifty, Minutes, March 1844–January 1846, James B. Allen
BYU Studies
Everything You Could Ever Want to Know about the Council of Fifty in Nauvoo” would be a well-suited subtitle for this highly anticipated volume. As the editors note, Joseph Smith and his closest associates saw the Council of Fifty “as the beginning of the literal kingdom of God on earth” (xxiii). It functioned secretly in Nauvoo from March 1844 to January 1846 and then later for three short periods in Utah. Historians have long been aware of this council, also called the “Kingdom of God,” and some have pieced together from various journals and other reliable sources considerable information about …

Sarah Louisa Bouton Felt: Thousands Called Her Mother, Roseann Benson
BYU Studies
A tribute to Sarah Louisa (“Louie”) Bouton Felt declared her “a beautiful lady whose name we all should know.”1 Although many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are familiar with two names important to the organization of the Primary Association, Aurelia Spencer Rogers (1834–1922) and Eliza R. Snow (1804–1887), the name Louie B. Felt (1850–1928) is relatively unknown. However, Louie was the second person called to be a ward Primary president and at age thirty was selected to preside over all the Primary Associations in Utah Territory, serving as the first general superintendent of the Primary …

Utilizing Lidar To Quantify Aboveground Tree Biomass Within An Urban University, Maggi Klug
Theses
Urban tree biomass is essential for the vitality of the surrounding ecosystem. This study utilized field measurements and aerial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing to estimate biomass within The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) campus to assess the importance of biomass on a school campus. LiDAR-derived canopy characteristics were calculated and used in a linear regression analysis in conjunction with in situ measured biomass to yield biomass equations for 14 tree species found on the UAH campus. The regression models had a high fit (R2 = 0.73-0.98) for most species. Some species such as the Pinus taeda, …
Revised Empirical Analysis And Modeling Of Ferroelectric Capacitors For Energy Storage, Naoki Nakajima
Revised Empirical Analysis And Modeling Of Ferroelectric Capacitors For Energy Storage, Naoki Nakajima
Theses
The property of ferroelectricity in these capacitors and the unique behavior due to the materials used are compared with purely dielectric ceramic capacitors in this thesis. Ferroelectric capacitors were analyzed via hysteresis loop measurements. Energy storage, loss, and the efficiency of each capacitor were calculated by analyzing the empirical data with MATLAB. As the effect of humidity, which was completely overlooked in the previous research, was so significant that it needed to be considered, leakage current removal was improved upon and calculated in order to evaluate the effects of leakage current intrinsic to the samples. Finally, an empirical model of …
Computational Gene Association Based On Relative Species Displacement In Gene And Morphology Trees, Martin D. Hellwig
Computational Gene Association Based On Relative Species Displacement In Gene And Morphology Trees, Martin D. Hellwig
Open Access Dissertations
While a number of methods exist for gene based fin prediction, these studies are mostly limited to single sites and to binary morphological characters and they are very susceptible to missing data. Here we present GATRS (Gene Association in TRee Space), a novel algorithm than can operate on continuous morphological observations such as fin size and is robust to missing data by operating in gene tree space, analyzing linkages between entire genes and morphological traits. GATRS performs a large number of comparisons between closely related trees which requires a tree distance method that is particularly apt at distinguishing closely related …
