Factors Affecting Superfund Hazardous Waste Site Cleanups, Leili Solatyavari
Factors Affecting Superfund Hazardous Waste Site Cleanups, Leili Solatyavari
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
My dissertation focuses on assessing environmental equity in neighborhoods hosting hazardous waste lands known as Superfund sites. I define environmental equity as equal and timely removal of Superfund sites regardless of the demographic profile of hosting communities. In the first chapter, I introduce the Superfund program and various steps that need to be taken by the EPA in order to remove a hazardous site from a neighborhood. The second chapter discusses theoretical frameworks that motivate the empirical analysis by visualizing the Superfund enforcement and cleanup process.
The third chapter objectives are twofold. First, I investigate the factors that may affect …
Functions Of Dfrp And Other Drg Pathway Genes In The Moss Physcomitrella Patens, Robert James Srygler
Functions Of Dfrp And Other Drg Pathway Genes In The Moss Physcomitrella Patens, Robert James Srygler
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
GTP binding proteins (G proteins) are molecular switches that regulate many aspects of physiology in all cells. DRG1 and DRG2 (Developmentally Regulated GTP-binding proteins) have been found in all eukaryotes examined. Amino acid identity across eukaryotes is about 65% within an orthologous group and 55% between paralogs of a single species. Although DRGs are likely involved in some aspect of translation regulation, details of their precise cellular functions are not known.
In addition to DRGs there are other genes/proteins that comprise the “DRG pathway.” DFRPs (DRG Family Regulatory Proteins) have been shown to physically and genetically interact with DRGs. Previous …
Highly Efficient Gan-Based Single-Phase Transformer-Less Pv Grid-Tied Inverter, Khaled Alatawi
Highly Efficient Gan-Based Single-Phase Transformer-Less Pv Grid-Tied Inverter, Khaled Alatawi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Growing energy demand and environmental concerns have led to an increased interest in renewable energy resources to provide a sustainable and low carbon emission energy supply. Among these renewable energy resources, photovoltaic (PV) systems have been the focus of many scientific researchers. The most vital component of a PV system that needs to be improved is the power converter. Grid-tied transformer-less inverters have gained a lot of interest in recent years because of their higher efficiency, reduced volume and lower cost compared to traditional line transformer inverters.
This dissertation discusses single-phase transformer-less inverter challenges and provides solutions that could lead …
A Lingua Franca Afloat And Ashore: Contact English In American Sea Fiction, 1824 To 1914, Fredrik Reidar Stark
A Lingua Franca Afloat And Ashore: Contact English In American Sea Fiction, 1824 To 1914, Fredrik Reidar Stark
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines how American sea writers between 1824 and 1914 promoted new perceptions of English as a various and expanding intercultural and international language. It argues that presentations of language contact form a critically underemphasized component of American nautical literature. It surveys how such presentations take shape in James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pilot (1824) and The Crater (1847), Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), and Richard Henry Dana’s Two Years before the Mast (1840). It asserts that Herman Melville’s innovative presentations of contact between pidgins and native varieties of English in Typee (1846) and Omoo …
Outpatients' And Treatment Providers’ Cultural Model(S) Of Mental Illness In Northern Illinois, Emily Jean Stephen
Outpatients' And Treatment Providers’ Cultural Model(S) Of Mental Illness In Northern Illinois, Emily Jean Stephen
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
For this thesis, I interviewed outpatients and clinicians from mental health treatment providers from the DeKalb, Illinois area to investigate the cultural models of mental illness held by both groups. I employed ethnographic methods of semi-structured interviews, and with cognitive tasks (free-listing, and pile sorting) to research similarities and differences between the outpatients’ and mental health treatment providers’ cultural models of ‘mental illness.’ Both mental health clinicians and outpatients have experience with disorders commonly termed ‘mental illness.’ I found differences of experience and identity seemed to more strongly influence one’s cultural model of mental illness than one’s level or type …

The Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Inhibitors Of The Ispf Enzyme In The Mep Pathway, Christopher G. Stewart
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Isoprenoids are a class of over 50,000 compounds that serve as key precursors for many compounds in plants and animals. These compounds play critical roles in many biological functions such as cellular growth, respiration, and go on to form critical compounds such as steroids and vitamins. Despite their overall necessity to life their biosynthesis only follows two synthetic pathways. These pathways are the Mevalonic Acid (MVA) Pathway and the 2-C-Methyl-D-Erythritol-4-Phosphate (MEP) Pathway also known as the non-mevalonate pathway. The MVA pathway is found primarily in humans and some higher plants while the MEP pathway is found in bacteria and some …
Ita Language Proficiency Testing: Recommended Replacement For The Speak® Test, Anne Marie Stoughton
Ita Language Proficiency Testing: Recommended Replacement For The Speak® Test, Anne Marie Stoughton
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Oral language tests have been used since the 1950s to assess the proficiency of spoken language. In the 1980s and 1990s, the need for oral proficiency testing increased as states began to mandate that universities within their jurisdictions test the English proficiency of instructors due to growing concerns over international teaching assistants’ (ITAs) comprehensibility. Many universities turned to the Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit® (SPEAK test), a language proficiency test created and distributed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), as means to test ITA proficiency in English. ETS’s discontinuance of the SPEAK test in 2010 has forced, and is forcing, …
Why Do Symbiodinium Migrate? Evolutionary Conflict In A Host-Symbiont Community, Jacey Lynn Strohecker
Why Do Symbiodinium Migrate? Evolutionary Conflict In A Host-Symbiont Community, Jacey Lynn Strohecker
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Climate change is an increasing problem for species all around the globe, including coral reef communities, which are among the most diverse and productive in the world. The mutualistic symbiosis between corals and photosynthetic dinoflagellates (symbionts) is central to these ecosystems. The rising temperatures are causing corals to lose their symbionts in a process known as bleaching, thus endangering the entire community. In this context, it is imperative to discover mechanisms that might mitigate the effects of stress on corals. Previous work has established that stress increases the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), that is, partially reduced forms of …

Magnetotransport In Zrte5 Crystals, Maksim Andreevich Sultanov
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
ZrTe5 is a topological material that is predicted to have a strain or temperature induced phase transition from a topological insulator state into a Weyl/Dirac semimetal state. In this study I find that there is insufficient evidence to support the claims for the existence of such a phase transition. I performed magnetoresistivity measurements using a Quantum Design Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS) to measure the transverse and longitudinal resistivities at various temperatures and different strengths and orientations of the magnetic field. The measurement results were analyzed using OriginPro to determine the carrier mobility and density and to determine the temperature …

Are They Activated? The Study Of Age Metastereotype Activation In A Workplace Context, Courtney L. Thomas
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis addresses the topic of metastereotype activation in the workplace. The thesis reports research that was conducted in pursuit of two goals. The first goal was the development of an implicit measure of age metastereotype activation. The second goal was to refine and test a theoretical model of metastereotype activation in the workplace. The model suggests that age metastereotype activation in the workplace depends upon contextual elements (e.g., age salience and evaluation salience) as well as various individual difference factors (e.g., age metastereotype consciousness, age identification, age prejudice, public self-consciousness, and external locus of control). Three studies were conducted …

Discovery Of Selective Probes Targeting Rna Polymerase I, Xiao Tan
Discovery Of Selective Probes Targeting Rna Polymerase I, Xiao Tan
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
RNR Polymerase I (RNA Pol I) is a “factory” that orchestrate the transcription of ribosomal rRNA for constructing ribosomes as a primary workshop for protein translation to sustain cell growth. Misregulation of RNA Pol I can cause uncontrolled cell proliferation, which leads to the development of cancer. Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is a valuable model system to study RNA Pol I. Recently, the X-ray crystal structure of the yeast homologue of RNA Pol I was elucidated, offering the structural basis to selectively target this transcriptional machinery. The approach to selective RNA Pol I targeting was to disrupt the interaction …

Boilerplate And The Impact Of Disclosure In Securities Dealmaking, Jeremy Mcclane
Boilerplate And The Impact Of Disclosure In Securities Dealmaking, Jeremy Mcclane
Vanderbilt Law Review
Capital markets dealmaking, like many kinds of business transactions, is built on a foundation of copied and recycled language what many call boilerplate. Regulators and the bar periodically call for less reliance on boilerplate, but despite these pressures, boilerplate remains a fixture of ever-growing securities disclosures. This Article explores why boilerplate persists and how it affects investors, showing that boilerplate may have a more complex role than commonly recognized. This Article does so by developing a theory on the effect of boilerplate in securities disclosure-a context that is little studied despite a wealth of literature on boilerplate in other settings--and …

Smaller, More Frequent Assessments May Reduce Students’ Ability To Recall Information, Renee M. Mcfee
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
Frequent, low-stakes, formative assessments can provide valuable feedback to both students and instructors. Formative assessments have also been shown to enhance student learning. However, many STEM instructors, including those in professional schools, rely solely on high-stakes, summative assessments such as unit, mid-term, or final exams. Our goal was to determine how administration of weekly quizzes impacts student learning (n = 27) in a graduate/professional-level veterinary physiology course. For 2 units (endocrine and cardiovascular), weekly quizzes were administered in addition to a summative, unit exam. Quizzes consisted of lower-order questions (e.g. recall) while exams consisted of higher-order questions (e.g. integrate, apply). …
