Domestic Violence In Rural & Non-Rural Areas: A Study On The Influence Of Population Density On Arrest Rates In The State Of Florida, Kiara Gonzalez Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Domestic violence (DV) is a global issue that can affect anyone regardless of what role they play in a family household. It does not discriminate by education, age, religion, etc. DV includes any type of violence or abuse that occurs within a domestic setting. For the purposes of this study, this content primarily focuses on intimate partner violence (IPV) as the main form of DV and is used interchangeably throughout the text. This study examines the influence of population density on arrest rates for DV and some factors behind the likelihood of arrests in urban and rural areas. The literature …

Uniform Climate Control, Anthony Moffa Jan 2019

Uniform Climate Control, Anthony Moffa

Faculty Publications

In Washington, D.C., the “Green New Deal” may be nothing more than a symbolic, Twitter-friendly legislative campaign with no real hope of adoption. But in New York, it is the new legal reality. The efforts of sub-national governments - like New York’s - to tackle widespread environmental harms, in particular climate change, have drawn increased media and scholarly attention since the United States declared its intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. In truth, the trend towards so-called “environmental federalism” predates the election of President Donald J. Trump. We are ushering in the next generation of environmental laws, and those …

Contesting Slavery In The Global Market: John Brown’S Slave Life In Georgia, Michael Drexler, Stephanie Scherer Jan 2019

Contesting Slavery In The Global Market: John Brown’S Slave Life In Georgia, Michael Drexler, Stephanie Scherer

Faculty Journal Articles

John Brown, author of Slave Life in Georgia, published in London in 1854, proffered a radical approach to ending slavery in the USA in step with Marxian economics. In this paper, we will explain how Brown’s representation of subjectivity may have caused critics to neglect it. Brown treats freedom as something foreign and external. He has to learn what freedom means, first through exposure to a model of liberal citizenship and then through the experience of several modulations of fugitive liberty. Brown’s social world is wholly determined by external forces. Whether slave or freeman, he faces ambiguous situations. Is …

Investigating Levels Of Graphical Comprehension Using The Locus Assessments, Charlotte A. Bolch, Tim Jacobbe Jan 2019

Investigating Levels Of Graphical Comprehension Using The Locus Assessments, Charlotte A. Bolch, Tim Jacobbe

Numeracy

Statistical literacy refers to two interrelated components: people’s ability to interpret and critically evaluate statistical information, and their ability to discuss or communicate their reactions to statistical information. The ability to read and interpret graphical displays is part of statistical literacy because much of the statistical information people encounter in their everyday lives are graphical displays or tables of data. The purpose of this study was to investigate college-level students’ graphical comprehension. Students’ graphical comprehension was assessed using items from the Levels of Conceptual Understanding in Statistics (LOCUS) assessments. Much can be learned about students’ graphical comprehension based on this …

Introducing Information Literacy To Mathematics Classrooms: A Cross-Case Analysis, Ander W. Erickson Jan 2019

Introducing Information Literacy To Mathematics Classrooms: A Cross-Case Analysis, Ander W. Erickson

Numeracy

This study employs a cross-case analysis to explore the demands and opportunities that arise when information problem-solving tasks are introduced into college mathematics classes. Mathematics teachers at three universities developed and introduced tasks that required students to seek out, evaluate, and synthesize quantitative claims from disparate information sources. The results focus on a comparison of how the teachers balanced content-specific instructional demands with the information literacy goals of the tasks that they created. Three tensions were identified through this analysis: the need to balance mathematical content with opportunities for students to engage in a realistic approximation of the information problem-solving …

Parts Of The Whole: Theories Of Pedagogy And Kolb’S Learning Cycle, Dorothy Wallace Jan 2019

Parts Of The Whole: Theories Of Pedagogy And Kolb’S Learning Cycle, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

This essay argues that discussions of pedagogy for quantitative reasoning will be more useful when framed in terms of overarching theories of learning. As an example, Kolb’s Learning Cycle theory encompasses a range of teaching methods and places them in a context that can help instructors make practical decisions about the timing and emphasis of various methods. The theory also suggests research questions that would test its validity or refine its utility for instructors. This essay aims to assist readers of Numeracy to frame and carry out research in best practices for teaching quantitative reasoning.

Bridging Distances: Professional Development For Higher Education Faculty Through Technology-Facilitated Lesson Study., Melissa Soto, Dittika Gupta, Lara Dick, Mollie Appelgate Jan 2019

Bridging Distances: Professional Development For Higher Education Faculty Through Technology-Facilitated Lesson Study., Melissa Soto, Dittika Gupta, Lara Dick, Mollie Appelgate

Faculty Journal Articles

Higher education faculty benefit from participating in communities of practice focused on developing and improving their own instruction. However, collaborators with common interests are not always located at the same physical location. In this article, we share how participation in a technology-facilitated lesson study provided the means for five higher education faculty across the U.S. to engage in professional development and evolve into a virtual community of practice. Through the use of synchronous and asynchronous communication technology, we formulated goals, planned a common lesson, conducted research on our students’ learning, and reflected on our own teaching practice. For this paper, …

The Ecology Of Central Florida's Thief Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Solenopsis), Leo Ohyama Jan 2019

The Ecology Of Central Florida's Thief Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Solenopsis), Leo Ohyama

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thief ants of the genus Solenopsis are a diverse group of ants that are found in ant communities throughout the world. They have long been purported to practice lestobiosis, an interaction between small and larger-bodied ants, where small ants cryptically tunnel into larger-bodied ant nests within the subterranean environment and steal brood or eggs for consumption. Thief ants are extremely small, measuring 1-2 mm in length and many of the species within this group practice a subterranean life history, where they live the entirety of their lives exclusively belowground. Due to these key characteristics, the ecology and natural history of …

Toward Improving Ambient Volta Potential Measurements With Skpfm For Corrosion Studies, Corey M. Efaw, Thiago Da Silva, Paul H. Davis, Lan Li, Elton Graugnard, Michael F. Hurley Jan 2019

Toward Improving Ambient Volta Potential Measurements With Skpfm For Corrosion Studies, Corey M. Efaw, Thiago Da Silva, Paul H. Davis, Lan Li, Elton Graugnard, Michael F. Hurley

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) is used in corrosion studies to quantify the relative nobility of different microstructural features present within complex metallic systems and thereby elucidate possible corrosion initiation sites. However, Volta potential differences (VPDs) measured via SKPFM in the literature for metal alloys exhibit large variability, making interpretation and application for corrosion studies difficult. We have developed an improved method for referencing SKPFM VPDs by quantifying the closely related work function of the probe relative to an inert gold standard whose modified work function is calculated via density functional theory (DFT). By measuring and tracking changes in …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Integration of biorefinery into pulp and paper industry has been considered as sustainable development for pulp and paper industry and lignocellulosic biorefinery. High value-added biochemical, biofuel and bioenergy productions could be implemented into existing pulp mills by material and utility integration. A systematic methodology employing a superstructure-based process synthesis, process design and innovation is an effective approach to explore potential pathways for both economic and environmental sustainability with support from computer-aided tools. A superstructure of the multi-product biorefinery process network with the pulp and paper industry is developed and optimized with the objective to maximize profit. The synthesis results project …

Techno-Economic Feasibility Analysis Of Hydrogen Recovery In Bio-Hydrogenated Diesel From Palm Oil For Methanol Synthesis Via Aspen Plus, Nitipat Phichitsurathaworn Jan 2019

Techno-Economic Feasibility Analysis Of Hydrogen Recovery In Bio-Hydrogenated Diesel From Palm Oil For Methanol Synthesis Via Aspen Plus, Nitipat Phichitsurathaworn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

A bio-hydrogenated diesel (BHD) or green diesel can be produced from refined palm oil obtained from palm oil refinery. A simulation model of BHD production process from palm oil is developed by Aspen Plus. The conventional process which is the heterogeneous catalytic hydro-deoxygenation reaction of triglycerides required high H2/oil volumetric ratio. To reduce high hydrogen loss in gaseous by-product, the design of hydrogen gas recovery process of the BHD process by coupling with methanol synthesis is proposed. The two processes (i.e., conventional BHD process and BHD process coupled with methanol synthesis) are compared in terms of hydrogen recovery and economic …

Water Dispersible Α-Mangostin By Self-Assembly Process, Jutamad Bumrung Jan 2019

Water Dispersible Α-Mangostin By Self-Assembly Process, Jutamad Bumrung

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

α-Mangostin, major bioactive compounds in Garcinia mangostana Linn, displays various interesting biological activities. However, the poor water solubility of α-mangostin has limited its use in the cosmetics and pharmaceutics. Here, we solve α-mangostin's solubility by creating water dispersible α-mangostin particles through self-assembly process with no need of any auxiliary agents such as polymers or surfactants. The simple and upscalable process gives 100% pure α-mangostin spherical particles with nanometer sizes. FT-IR result suggests that intermolecular interaction among α-mangostin molecules in the nanoparticles is weaker than that of the original α-mangostin solid. The lower thermal stability of the particles as compared to …
