Helminth infection and dietary intake can affect the intestinal microbiota, as well as the immune system. Here we analyzed the relationship between fecal microbiota and blood profiles of indigenous Malaysians, referred to locally as Orang Asli, in comparison to urban participants from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. We found that helminth infections had a larger effect on gut microbial composition than did dietary intake or blood profiles. Trichuris trichiura infection intensity also had the strongest association with blood transcriptional profiles. By characterizing paired longitudinal samples collected before and after deworming treatment, we determined that changes in serum zinc …

The fecal indicator bacterial species Escherichia coli is an important measure of water quality and a leading cause of impaired surface waters. We investigated the impact of the filter-feeding metazooplankton Daphnia magna on the inactivation of E. coli. The E. coli clearance rates of these daphnids were calculated from a series of batch experiments conducted under variable environmental conditions. Batch system experiments of 24 to 48 h in duration were completed to test the impacts of bacterial concentration, organism density, temperature, and water type. The maximum clearance rate for adult D. magna organisms was 2 ml h1 organism1. Less than …
Person-Level Sources Of Continued Influence Effect: The Roles Of Attention Control, Intolerance Of Ambiguity And Conservatism, Jinhao Chi
Dissertations
People continually rely on disinformation to make judgments after it is corrected or discredited. This phenomenon is termed the continued influence effect (CIE). Using a sample of 152 participants, the current study examined whether the CIE can be explained by a person’s political orientation, attention control (AC) levels, intolerance of ambiguity (IA) and need for specific closure (NSC). It was found that when political orientation was based on self-reports, the overall political conservatism did not predict the CIE (r = .13, p = .09) but economic conservatism did (r = .19, p < .05), suggesting that those with higher self-reported fiscally conservative attitudes may show more prolonged influence of disinformation. In addition, the overall AC levels did not predict the CIE (r = .08, p = .30), but the antisaccade scores reflecting the ability to inhibit automatic responses were a significant positive predictor of the CIE (r = .18, p < .05). Lastly, neither IA nor NSC significantly predicted the CIE (ps > .05). These findings were obtained with only one …

Background: Conflicting reports exist regarding mortality and morbidity of early surgical decompression in the setting of acute central cord syndrome (ACS) in multisystem trauma despite evidence of improved neurological outcomes. Consequently, optimal decompression timing in ACS in multisystem trauma patients remains controversial. This study aims to determine the association between early surgery for acute traumatic central cord and all-cause mortality among multisystem trauma patients in the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) using propensity score matching.
Methods: We used the NTDB (years 2011-2014) to perform a retrospective cohort study, which included patients >18 years, with ACS (identified using ICD-9 coding). Collected …

We report the management of symptomatic May-Thurner syndrome refractory to endovascular techniques with left gonadal vein to inferior vena cava bypass. The patient's presentation was exceptional-a young individual with end-stage renal disease status post four failed kidney transplants, dwindling options for dialysis access, and an unusable left thigh arteriovenous graft owing to severe lower extremity edema secondary to common iliac vein compression. Postoperatively, swelling was markedly alleviated and the thigh graft was functional. Discussed are endovascular and venous bypass techniques for management of May-Thurner-associated lesions, as well as approaches to end-stage hemodialysis access salvage.

Background
Comparative data from non-human primates provide insight into the processes that shaped the evolution of the human gut microbiome and highlight microbiome traits that differentiate humans from other primates. Here, in an effort to improve our understanding of the human microbiome, we compare gut microbiome composition and functional potential in 14 populations of humans from ten nations and 18 species of wild, non-human primates.
Results
Contrary to expectations from host phylogenetics, we find that human gut microbiome composition and functional potential are more similar to those of cercopithecines, a subfamily of Old World monkey, particularly baboons, than to those …
The Water Table, Soil Moisture And Evapotranspiration Conditions Following The Removal Of Conifers From Two Encroached Meadows, Tyler J. Davis
The Water Table, Soil Moisture And Evapotranspiration Conditions Following The Removal Of Conifers From Two Encroached Meadows, Tyler J. Davis
Master's Theses
Montane meadows provide essential habitat for a variety of unique species and important ecosystem services in the western United States. Although important, meadows have experienced increased rates of conifer encroachment due to climate change, fire suppression and grazing. To combat meadow degradation from conifer encroachment, land managers have employed various restoration strategies one of which is conifer removal. Multiple studies have investigated the relationship between meadow hydrology and vegetation; however, few have assessed the effect of conifer removal on meadow groundwater. The goal of this study is to determine if the removal of conifers from an encroached meadow has an …

Evaluation Of Pheromone Mating Disruption For California Red Scale Control In Commercial California Citrus, Joel Timothy Leonard
Master's Theses
California red scale (CRS), Aonidella aurantii, is an increasingly injurious insect pest for the California citrus industry due to insecticide resistance, changing weather patterns, and shifting trade regulations. The presence of the insect on fruit, damages the rind of the fruit and high populations can cause dieback of branches as well as lower yields. Pheromone mating disruption of CRS has the potential to alleviate population control concerns and reduce insecticide use. The efficacy of the pheromone mating disruption technique for pest management of CRS was determined using the products CheckMate® CRS and Semios CRS Plus. CheckMate® CRS was evaluated …

Effects Of Infanticide Risk And Timber Harvest On American Black Bear Space Use, D. Cody Norton
All NMU Master's Theses
Space use is an important aspect of bear ecology that maybe influenced by infanticide risk and timber harvest. I used generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to determine if female American black bear (Ursus americanus) space use was consistent with avoidance behavior to reduce infanticide risk in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during the 2009–2011 and 2013–2014 breeding seasons. Females with cubs occupied core areas and home ranges of similar size and relative probability of male use to females without cubs. Additionally, females with cubs did not reduce movements during times of day when male movements were greatest. Female …
Assessing The Impact Of Computer-Based Simulations On The Interprofessional Education Of Undergraduate Students, Heather Isaacson
Assessing The Impact Of Computer-Based Simulations On The Interprofessional Education Of Undergraduate Students, Heather Isaacson
All NMU Master's Theses
Interprofessional Education (IPE) is not unique as it is a concept that has been advocated for more than 40 years by the Institute of Medicine (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 2016). Interprofessional education occurs “when two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2010, p. 13). It is a staple in the education of nurses and doctors; however, it is starting to make an appearance in Communication Sciences and Disorders programs. As a result, this is a topic of great interest to faculty teaching in the …

New Perspectives On Kristallnacht: After 80 Years, The Nazi Pogrom In Global Comparison, Wolf Gruner, Steven J. Ross
Purdue University Press Book Previews
On November 9 and 10, 1938, Nazi leadership unleashed an unprecedented orchestrated wave of violence against Jews in Germany, Austria, and the Sudetenland, supposedly in response to the assassination of a Nazi diplomat by a young Polish Jew, but in reality to force the remaining Jews out of the country. During the pogrom, Stormtroopers, Hitler Youth, and ordinary Germans murdered more than a hundred Jews (many more committed suicide) and ransacked and destroyed thousands of Jewish institutions, synagogues, shops, and homes. Thirty thousand Jews were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.

China's Maritime Grand Strategy, Sarah Quan
China's Maritime Grand Strategy, Sarah Quan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
China’s goals in the South China Sea are twofold: to expand sovereignty while keeping the peace. I argue this is accomplished through rhetorical strategic ambiguity and military clarity, which have characterized China’s maritime grand strategy since 2010. Using confusion and clarity—two seemingly opposite strategies—allows China to simultaneously expand sovereignty and maintain peace. This paper first introduces the literature and theory behind grand strategy and strategic ambiguity. It then demonstrates how China’s intentions are made clear through military actions, then shows that China’s rhetoric is ambiguous to members of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) by weighing evidence that China is …

Research Attitude And Capabilities Of Selected Academic Librarians Towards Preparation In Conducting Research, Creasel Sison
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The library is a growing micro-organism. Over time, it changes and updates its services depending on the present scenario, expectations of clients and the most “in” mode of delivery of services. There is really a great need for library researchers especially that libraries need to stay relevant to the clients. Many librarians see the importance of research, however many also experience difficulty on research. Despite these circumstances, only few consider this as starting point to study the librarians’ attitude and capabilities on research to determine areas for improvement. The study assessed the research attitude and capabilities of librarians from selected …

Singapore has the fastest ageing population in the Asia Pacific region, with an estimated 82,000 seniors living with dementia. These figures are projected to increase to more than 130,000 by 2030. The challenge is to identify more community dwelling seniors with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a prodromal state, as it provides an opportunity for evidence-based early intervention to delay the onset of dementia. In this paper, we explore the use of Internet of Things (IoT) systems in detecting MCI symptoms in seniors who are living alone, and accurately grouping them into MCI positive and negative subjects. We present feature extraction …

Computing Maximum And Minimum With Privacy Preservation And Flexible Access Control, Wenxiu Ding, Zheng Yan, Xinren Qian, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the fast development of Internet of Things, huge volume of data is being collected from various sensors and devices, aggregated at gateways, and processed in the cloud. Due to privacy concern, data are usually encrypted before being outsourced to the cloud. However, encryption seriously impedes both computation over the data and sharing of the computation results. Computing maximum and minimum among a data set are two of the most basic operations in machine learning and data mining algorithms. In this paper, we study how to compute maximum and minimum over encrypted data and control the access to the computation …

The Concentration Of Household Income In The United States By Race/Ethnicity, 1967 - 2018, Laird W. Bergad
Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
Introduction: This report studies income distribution in the United States between 1967 and 2018 by race and ethnicity.
Methods: The data were derived from the US Census Bureau's Historical Income Tables: Income Inequality
Results: The upper 5% of households controlled 17% of total household income in 1967 and 23% in 2018. The upper 20% of households accounted for 44% of all income in 1967 and 52% in 2018. Economic growth, which has been impressive in the period under consideration, did not result in rising household incomes across the social hierarchy. Between 1967 and 2018 the upper 5% of income-earning households …
