Effects Of Interviewer Familiarity And Supportiveness On Children's Recall Across Repeated Interviews, Sonja P. Brubacher, Debra A. Poole, Jason J. Dickinson, David La Rooy, Zsófia A. Szojka, Martine B. Powell

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Objectives: Child witnesses often describe their experiences across multiple interviews. It is unknown whether talking with a familiar interviewer increases disclosures, however, or whether any benefits of a familiar interviewer could be achieved by ensuring that interviewers (regardless of familiarity) behave in socially supportive ways. This study tested the effects of interviewer familiarity and social support on children's reports of an adult's transgressions. Hypotheses: We predicted that familiarity and supportiveness would increase transgression reports at a second interview and that children who spoke with familiar, supportive interviewers would disclose the most transgressions. Method: Children (N = 160, 5 to 9 …

Political Polarization And Long-Term Change In Public Support For Environmental Spending, Eric W. Johnson, Philip Schwadel Dec 2019

Political Polarization And Long-Term Change In Public Support For Environmental Spending, Eric W. Johnson, Philip Schwadel

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Public support for environmental protection has evinced declines in recent years that are widely attributed to growing antipathy among self-identified Republicans. Fractures in what was long considered broad and enduring support for the environment in the United States have called attention to the broader sociopolitical context in which individual opinion on the environment is formed, and especially the role of political parties and their leaders in shaping opinion. Empirical analyses of environmental support, however, remain strongly focused on individual-level correlates of support. We apply recent methodological advances in age-period-cohort models to scrutinize changes in Americans’ willingness to pay more for …

Doing Family: The Reproduction Of Heterosexuality In Accounts Of Parenthood, Emily Kazyak, Nicholas K. Park Dec 2019

Doing Family: The Reproduction Of Heterosexuality In Accounts Of Parenthood, Emily Kazyak, Nicholas K. Park

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The cultural and legal landscape in the United States has shifted towards increased recognition of LGBQ-parent families. This shift raises questions about the everyday experiences of LGBQ parents and whether the cultural and legal changes also manifest in diminished experiences of discrimination. Drawing on data from 74 interviews with LGBQ parents, we analyze their accounts of whether they are read as a parent by others in their daily interactions. Our findings reveal the ways in which heterosexuality is a key component of how membership to the category of ‘parent’ is produced in social interactions. Our findings also illustrate how assumptions …

Theses and Dissertations

Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) in south Texas provide ecosystem services and benefits to humans including: habitat for wildlife, prevention of coastline erosion, and mitigation of natural disasters. One step to preserve their ecological functions is to identify and protect the source of their nitrogen (N). Nitrogen stable isotopes were sampled for one year beginning August 2018 and used as tracers to identify how mangroves obtain N. Total N in (A. germinans) and associated (Batis maritima) (plants) (2.1%) was more abundant than in cyanobacteria (0.6%) and sediment (0.1%). Plant d15N signatures (5.52‰) were more similar to sediment (5.21‰) than cyanobacteria (1.98‰), …

Evaluation Of The Most Significant Factors Influencing The Production Rates Of Highway Construction Activities, Angelica M. Neira Dec 2019

Evaluation Of The Most Significant Factors Influencing The Production Rates Of Highway Construction Activities, Angelica M. Neira

Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of realistic production rates is key for the accurate estimation of the contract time in highway projects. Several factors have an impact on production rates and change the total duration of construction projects. To organize and complete projects in a timely, quality and financially responsible manner, projects need to be scheduled carefully. Schedulers and planners of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have been noticing that the estimated timelines are far from the reality and want to investigate if external factors can be the cause of this discrepancy. Some of the factors considered in this study are the …

Elementary Statistics Instructors' Uptake Of The Teaching Practices Recommended By The American Statistical Association, Marisol Sanchez Cortez Dec 2019

Elementary Statistics Instructors' Uptake Of The Teaching Practices Recommended By The American Statistical Association, Marisol Sanchez Cortez

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies point out there has been a wide gap, in the teaching of mathematics, between the practices recommended in the credential programs and the practices teachers actually do. The purpose of this study is to explore how consistent the teaching practices of introductory statistics instructors are to the recommendations endorsed by the American Statistical Association, to understand what their attitudes to the gap are, and to identify the factors that prevent the instructors from implementing the recommended practices. Data were collected from nine statistics instructors at a state university through survey, classroom observations, and interviews. Findings indicate that the …

An Advanced Approach For Contract Time Determination In Highway Projects, Cuauhtemoc Torres Cantu

Theses and Dissertations

In project management, finishing a project on schedule is one of the most important aspects. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been experiencing delays in some projects that can be accounted to an inaccurate project time estimation process. This research presents the development of a user-friendly and comprehensive computer-based contract time determination system. The enhanced system implements probabilistic scheduling techniques such as Program Evaluation and Review Technique, and Monte Carlo Simulation. Additionally, the application of a lognormal two-point PERT method is explored in this study. The new system proposes the use of a database of production rates based on …

Do Elevation And Aspect Predict Functional Trait Values In Alpine Plant Populations?, Karen Analiesa Bach Dec 2019

Do Elevation And Aspect Predict Functional Trait Values In Alpine Plant Populations?, Karen Analiesa Bach

Biological Sciences

Alpine regions are among the hardest hit by global climate change, experiencing rising temperatures at a faster rate than lowland areas. Such fast rates of warming are predicted to cause rapid changes in alpine plant communities, including shifts in plant functional traits along elevation gradients. To investigate these effects within species, we examined the relationship between elevation, aspect, and functional traits of three common alpine plants in California; the shrub Holodiscus discolor var. microphyllus, the forb Calyptridium umbellatum, and the grass Trisetum spicatum. Functional traits examined included plant height, plant width, and Specific Leaf Area (SLA). These …

Honors Theses

This project investigates the synthesis and physical properties of polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (MePEGn where n=3 or 7) based polymer electrolytes. The two polymer electrolytes explored in the experiments were designed from two different MePEG chains that varied in their overall length and degree of polymerization. The first MePEG backbone contained three polymerized ethoxy groups and the second contained seven. Both MePEGn polymers were modified by substituting an imidazolium group in place of the alcohol functional group at the end of the PEG chain. This modification was made to create a polymer electrolyte with an attached positive charge that could …
