The Role Of The Navy In Future Warfare, Charles R. Brown
Naval War College Review
The title of my talk today is the role of the Navy in future warfare. In such a discussion my inclination is to immediately thrust myself into the future since the history of the past, however glorious, is of little but academic interest to us unless it has definite application in the future.

Examining The Roles Of Army Reserve Component Forces In Military Cyberspace Operations, Jeffrey L. Caton
Examining The Roles Of Army Reserve Component Forces In Military Cyberspace Operations, Jeffrey L. Caton
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Cyberspace operations have become pervasive in the United States, and they enable many aspects of modern life for the average citizen, such as entertainment, communication, education, transportation, banking, and voting. The continuing development of the U.S. Army and Department of Defense (DoD) Reserve component cyberspace units can leverage the capabilities and experience of industry and academia to help protect critical information infrastructure and enhance national security. What opportunities and challenges surround the integration of these forces into a still-evolving joint cyberspace force?
Traffic Management Control, George W. Baurenschmidt
Traffic Management Control, George W. Baurenschmidt
Naval War College Review
In the last war production as a problem was solved very early, but the problem of distribution was not solved. Transportation is a major component of distribution. Traffic management is a major component of transportation. My subject today is "Traffic Management." But it cannot be discussed without a discussion first of transportation as it pertains to logistics.

Strategic Employment Of The Navy; Past, Present And Future, Donald B. Beary
Naval War College Review
The basic fundamental mission of the Navy in the past and it will continue to be so in the future is to gain and maintain control of the sea lanes vital to our war effort and to deny to the enemy the sea lanes vital to him.

Vital U.S. Commercial And Economic Problems, William Y. Elliott
Vital U.S. Commercial And Economic Problems, William Y. Elliott
Naval War College Review
The commercial and economic policy of this country is the center from which the goal of war production must be nourished. War strategy, for that matter, depends today, more than ever, on logistics. Therefore, the health of the American economy is a primary concern to you who are vitally, entrusted with the security of this country.
Competing Narratives Of Victimhood And Aggression: Japanese Memory Of Wartime In Sakae Tsuboi’S Nijushi No Hitomi, Shobichatul Aminah
Competing Narratives Of Victimhood And Aggression: Japanese Memory Of Wartime In Sakae Tsuboi’S Nijushi No Hitomi, Shobichatul Aminah
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
The conclusion of the Pacific War witnessed the emergence of contradictory narratives that soon competed for ownership of Japan’s official wartime memory. As ardent nationalism was replaced with pacifism and a global outlook, Japan’s total military defeat was largely refigured into a narrative of victimhood. Simultaneously, the aggression of the past was purposefully downplayed. Pacifism is enshrined in the Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution. That clause represents a cherished part of the country’s postwar identity. This study investigates the memory of war as described in Sakae Tsuboi’s novel, Nijushi no Hitomi, that depicts the lives of a teacher’s and her …
When To Take Credit For Terrorism? A Cross-National Examination Of Claims And Attributions, Erin M. Kearns
When To Take Credit For Terrorism? A Cross-National Examination Of Claims And Attributions, Erin M. Kearns
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Rationalist research expects that groups claim credit for terrorism. Yet, the vast majority of attacks are not claimed. Of the unclaimed attacks, about half are attributed to a specific group. What factors impact claiming decisions? While extant literature largely treats claiming as binary—either claimed or not—the present study disaggregates claiming decisions further to also consider attacks with attributions of credit but no claim, using data from 160 countries between 1998 and 2016. Both attack-level and situational factors impact claiming decisions. Disaggregating claiming behavior shows meaningful differences. Specifically, competitive environments and suicide attacks increase claims but not attributions. Higher fatalities in …
Scenario Planning And Strategy In The Pentagon, Michael Fitzsimmons Dr.
Scenario Planning And Strategy In The Pentagon, Michael Fitzsimmons Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Scenario planning should be one of the Pentagon’s most important tools for developing strategy for an uncertain future. However, the formalized joint scenario planning process to support strategy and force development—Support for Strategic Analysis—has faced many challenges over the past 2 decades, and has ultimately proven less influential than intended on strategic decision-making. Explaining why is the main purpose of this monograph. It argues that scenario analysis has been most effective in supporting capability and program development, while it has fallen short in shaping strategy and force structure. The reasons for this are numerous and are rooted in intrinsic, structural …

Heroine Of One Thousand Faces: Memoirs By Four Women Soldiers In The Great War And Postwar Period, Chenwen Hong
Heroine Of One Thousand Faces: Memoirs By Four Women Soldiers In The Great War And Postwar Period, Chenwen Hong
Doctoral Dissertations
“Heroine of One Thousand Faces: Memoirs by Four Women Soldiers in the Great War and Postwar Period” is a comparative project that contributes to ongoing conversations within First World War feminist literary scholarship. My study fills in a research gap concerning autobiographies by women soldiers. It explores the autobiographical writings of four women soldiers who came from different nationalities and spoke different languages. Each of their cultures carried different traditions of women warriors, and each woman came from a different class situation, around the globe. Maria Botchkareva, a semi-literate peasant, spoke Russian; Flora Sandes, native to Yorkshire, was a cosmopolitan …

German Prisoners Of War In Canada, 1940–1946: An Autobiography-Based Essay, Franz-Karl Stanzel
Canadian Military History
The four years I spent in British and Canadian POW Camps offered ample time to study English Literature. This experience in particular had a decisive effect on my later career as university teacher of English literature. It also helped me to become one of the first Anglicists at German and Austrian universities, who included Canadian literature in his syllabus and a founder member of the German Association for Canadian Studies. In this essay based on my war-autobiography, I describe the experience of German POWs in Canada. I was captured in 1942 when serving as third officer of the watch on …

Terrorism As Economic Warfare: America's Risky Business, Rodger A. Bates, Bryan Labrecque
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Terrorism is a form of asymmetrical warfare. Terrorists employ a variety of tactics to threaten and intimidate a group or society. Technology is an important force multiplier which may allow them engage in cost-effective actions frequently directed at economic targets. As a means of economic warfare, terrorism can disrupt, demoralize and severely diminish the ability of a group to counter the threat of a terrorist group. It is America's risky business.

The U.S. Army In The Iraq War – Volume 1: Invasion – Insurgency – Civil War, 2003-2006, Joel D. Rayburn Col, Frank K. Sobchak Col
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The Iraq War has been the costliest U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War. To date, few official studies have been conducted to review what happened, why it happened, and what lessons should be drawn. The U.S. Army in the Iraq War is the Army’s initial operational level analysis of this conflict, written in narrative format, with assessments and lessons embedded throughout the work. This study reviews the conflict from a Landpower perspective and includes the contributions of coalition allies, the U.S. Marine Corps, and special operations forces. Presented principally from the point of view of the commanders in Baghdad, the …
