Graduate Recital In Trombone, Thomas Mortenson
Graduate Recital In Trombone, Thomas Mortenson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this recital is to partially fulfill the requirements for the Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance. It features repertoire selected to demonstrate the performer’s musical and technical abilities while exploring a wide range of historical differences in trombone pedagogy. Consideration was given to creating a cohesive program arranged to help prevent stamina issues related to the technical demands of the repertoire. The program features Georg Christoph Wagenseil’s Concerto in E-flat Major for Trombone; two selected Lieder from Johannes Brahms’s Vier Gesänge, op. 43; Henri Tomasi’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra; Frigyes Hidas’s Fantasia for Trombone; and …

Els Catalans Són Diferents: Catalan Independence Through A Cultural Lens, Maren Burling
Els Catalans Són Diferents: Catalan Independence Through A Cultural Lens, Maren Burling
Honors Theses
With a focus on Catalan independence, this thesis looks at how Catalans create and perform their regional identity, and how cultural symbols of Catalan society – food, sports, language, and others – are uniquely situated within the wider Spanish society. Both linguistic anthropology and symbolic/interpretive anthropology inform my writing and support my argument for the importance of language and other cultural symbols to Catalan identity, which are key to understanding Catalan separatism. My research contributes to current conversations in anthropology about the role of cultural identity in creating community. I argue that, in the Catalan case, cultural identity both shapes …
Assuming All That Is Asian: Becoming A Truly Local Church In Dialogue, Ruben C. Mendoza
Assuming All That Is Asian: Becoming A Truly Local Church In Dialogue, Ruben C. Mendoza
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Ruben C. Mendoza attempts to show how the theological principle of the incarnation lies at the heart of and informs the FABC’s vision of the local Church. It is expressed in the FABC’s theological methodology, the triple-dialogue approach to mission, mission of service, and emphasis on the building up of local Churches. For the FABC, the Church of Asia, in becoming truly local, is called to assume all that is truly Asian.
Challenges To The Churches In Asia Today, Georg Evers
Challenges To The Churches In Asia Today, Georg Evers
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Georg Evers, in “Challenges to the Churches in Asia Today,” begins with a brief overview of the situation of the Asian churches before Vatican II. He then discusses the significance of the Council for the Asian churches with special attention to the founding of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. He describes the main characteristics of the Catholic churches in Asia. In the main theme of his talk, “The Challenges to the Asian Churches,” Evers presents prophetic figures who have inspired the churches to radical Christian commitment and invites us to examine contemporary secular and theological challenges.

The House On Marcos Street, Danielle Garza
The House On Marcos Street, Danielle Garza
Capstone Projects
The House on Marcos Street, a house that’s been in my family for over forty years, is one of many homes in a neighborhood filled with generations of stories and memories that influence the community today. Many memories have been created in this small home -- from the realization of my ancestors’ dreams to the hardships of reality. The families within this neighborhood have seen joy and suffering just like my own family. This neighborhood is constantly changing, affecting the people who call this community home. Today this community changes through the increase of gentrification, the decrease of livable homes. …

Roger Nash Baldwin And The St. Louis Civil Liberties Trail: Celebrating 100 Years Of The Aclu With Search For The Organization's Conceptual Founding, Patrick C. Brayer
Faculty Works
This article traces the role of Roger Nash Baldwin as a leading figure in the American civil liberties movement in the early twentieth century. In particular, the article highlights the central role of St. Louis in this history. At the advice of family friend Louis Brandeis, Baldwin moved to St. Louis to become a sociology professor at Washington University. At the time, St. Louis was a center of migration for African Americans escaping oppression in the South. The article traces a variety of geographical locations throughout St. Louis that were important to Baldwin’s development as a leader in the civil …
State Constitutions As A Check On The New Governors: Using State Free Speech Clauses To Protect Social Media Users From Arbitrary Political Censorship By Social Media Platforms, Elijah O'Kelley
Emory Law Journal
Social media platforms like Facebook are increasingly the arbiters of what political viewpoints get the light of day. As more people become active on social media, including using it as a primary news source, and as political speech increasingly moves onto these platforms, they will continue amassing the power to control news narratives, the size of speakers’ bullhorns, and the ideas that get discussed. Moreover, these platforms will likely face increasing external pressures to silence certain viewpoints deemed objectionable or offensive, whatever those views may be. The United States Constitution provides no check on this power. As private actors, social …
The Problems With Pornography Regulation: Lessons From History, Thomas C. Arthur
The Problems With Pornography Regulation: Lessons From History, Thomas C. Arthur
Emory Law Journal
A growing new anti-pornography movement has arisen in reaction to the ready availability of pornography on the Internet. It seeks stricter legal prohibitions on ¿obscene¿ materials, even when viewed in private homes, and greater enforcement of existing laws. History demonstrates that these proposals are unsound for three reasons. First, ¿obscene¿ pornography is difficult to define without violating the First Amendment. Second, Prohibition demonstrates the difficulties of laws depriving citizens of goods that they desire on moral grounds they do not share. Censorship of online pornography would present similar problems. Third, any broader definition of obscenity would be inconsistent with basic …
Who Is Paying For God: A Thematic Analysis Of Henry Arthur Jones's Religious Plays In Relation To The Modernist Trend, Jay Tyler Sharma
Who Is Paying For God: A Thematic Analysis Of Henry Arthur Jones's Religious Plays In Relation To The Modernist Trend, Jay Tyler Sharma
All Master's Theses
This thesis project argues for the value of Henry Arthur Jones’s work in the late 1890s and seeks to illustrate that Jones’s contribution to the larger Modernist movement in the theatre. Using a close textual analysis of Jones’s plays Michael and His Lost Angel, Judah, and Saints and Sinners, this project examines Jones’s use of popular theatrical genres to provide commentary on the religious and fiscal tensions in the surrounding Victorian society. The critical commentary in Jones’s plays is then used to draw a connection between Jones’s work and his fight for dramatists to have greater freedom in the topics …

At the same time, the boundaries of privacy may differ from one place to another affecting by the culture, religion, etc. Nonetheless, there is not a unique general accepted definition for the privacy. Privacy has been considered from different disciplines like sociology, psychology, law and philosophy. It is a multidisciplinary domain, having an easy concept but difficult to define. However, by reviewing all different viewpoints, it can be concluded that privacy is an individual tendency, wish and natural need to be away from …

Bringing Swirly Music To Life: Why Copyright Law Should Adopt Patent Law Standards For Joint Authorship Of Sound Engineers, Andrew Nietes
Bringing Swirly Music To Life: Why Copyright Law Should Adopt Patent Law Standards For Joint Authorship Of Sound Engineers, Andrew Nietes
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Geoff Emerick, acclaimed sound engineer for The Beatles, passed away in October of 2018. Emerick helped shape The Beatles’ sound and worked to create many of their most recognized songs, yet, under the current joint authorship standards he likely would not be considered an author of these songs. This Note details the work carried out by sound engineers in the music industry and describes how current joint authorship standards affect them. It then proposes a reinterpretation of joint authorship in the copyright statute to ease these standards by borrowing from another area of intellectual property law.

A Semiotic Reading Of The East Asian-Canadian Restaging Of The Immigrant Experience And Redress In Marty Chan’S The Forbidden Phoenix And David Yees’S Lady In The Red Dress, Rania M Rafik Khalil
English Language and Literature
The astounding increase in immigration and the rise in intercultural relationships within Canadian society resulted in the last decade in the acceptability of a number of dramatic works by ethnic, immigrant and second generation Canadian playwrights. This paper examines through Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of semiotics the East-Asian Canadian immigrant experience and the journey of redress in two dramatic works: Marty Chan’s The Forbidden Phoenix (2010) and David Yee’s lady in the red dress (2010). The Forbidden Phoenix and lady in the red dress, address issues related to exclusionary policies against early Chinese immigrants to Canada …

The Case For (And Against) Surrogate Taxation, Julie Roin
The Case For (And Against) Surrogate Taxation, Julie Roin
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act significantly revised long-standing rules regarding the tax treatment of many employer provided in-kind benefits. Instead of including the value of these benefits in the recipients’ taxable income, for the most part the new rules disallow employers a deduction for the cost of providing the affected benefits. This article argues that the two components of this legislative scheme – relying on cost of provision as the measure of taxable income and on imposing the nominal tax obligation on providers rather than recipients – are distinct policy decisions. It argues that the better approach would …

Ways Of Making: Producing Artworks In The Studio In Response To Experiential Walking, Helen Billinghurst
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis includes a body of paintings, drawings and assembled objects that have been made in response to the Crossing England walks (2014 - 2018). This body of work is entitled The English Diagrams (2018). The research draws upon the varied perspectives of Fine Art, Performance Studies and Cultural Geographies, to examine the relationship between the activities of walking as art, and making in the studio. Drawing from experiential phenomenology, I set out a model for rigorous, reflexive, creative practice and map the looping affiliations between the embodied world of the walked landscape, the subjective terrain of the practitioner, and …
Data Sonification In Creative Practice, Nuria Bonet
Data Sonification In Creative Practice, Nuria Bonet
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Sonification is the process of data transmission with non-speech audio. While finding increasing acceptance as a scientific method, particularly where a visual representation of data is inadequate, it is still often derided as a ‘gimmick’. Composers have also shown growing interest in sonification as a compositional method. Both in science and in music, the criticism towards this method relates to poor aesthetics and gratuitous applications. This thesis aims to address these issues through an accompanying portfolio of pieces which use sonification as a compositional tool. It establishes the principles of ‘musification’, which can be defined as a sonification which uses …
