Contemporary Art On The Streets In Brazil (2005-2016), Marcelo Mari Jan 2019

Contemporary Art On The Streets In Brazil (2005-2016), Marcelo Mari

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

Against neoliberal economics and the fatal march of globalization in the late 1990s, young people worldwide began to organize ways of fighting and resistance to the contradictions created by the state of exception policies and losses of civil and labour around the world. In tactical terms, these young people have created alternative vehicles for information and were benefited by the internet as debate and mobilization tool. This new form of combat and instrument of art meant the emergence of artistic collectives. These groups of artists or collectives, in addition to the criticism of art production as individualized production, went beyond …

The Demands Of Poetry: A Review Of Collections Published In 2018 By Latter-Day Saint Authors, Susan Elizabeth Howe, Casualene Meyer Jan 2019

The Demands Of Poetry: A Review Of Collections Published In 2018 By Latter-Day Saint Authors, Susan Elizabeth Howe, Casualene Meyer

BYU Studies

During the nineteenth century, poets had the celebrity status of today’s most famous singers. Most of today’s educated readers (including educated Latter-day Saint readers), however, can’t name five poets who are highly regarded in our generation. But readers may not be completely to blame for this shift. Early in the twentieth century, poets such as T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, poets later grouped under the term Modernist, took poetry, which had been one of the most popular genres of literature, and made it so difficult—so full of allusions, voices, and fragments of thought not necessarily connected to each …

A Demographic Picture Of Academics Teaching On Engineering Programmes In Ireland And Their Approaches To Teaching (Ati)., Una Beagon, Brian Bowe

Conference papers

This paper presents the results of an online survey (n=293) carried out on academics teaching on engineering programmes in Ireland in 2017/18. The primary purpose of the survey was to provide a selection pool for interviewees in a separate phenomenographic study, however the survey also provided some interesting findings. Previously, there has been little published data on the diversity of personnel teaching on engineering programmes in Ireland and this paper aims to provide an insight. In addition to collating the demographics of the survey respondents, and their background experiences in academic and industry, the Approaches to Teaching Inventory (ATI) [1] …

Is Everything A Full-Blown First Amendment Case After Becerra And Janus? Sorting Out Standards Of Scrutiny And Untangling "Speech As Speech" Cases From Disputes Incidentally Affecting Expression, Clay Calvert

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article examines the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 First Amendment-based decisions in both National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra and Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. The Article illustrates how the rulings in these right-not-to-speak cases deepen the divide on today’s Court over when a case affecting speech merits heightened First Amendment analysis (be it strict or intermediate scrutiny) and when it only deserves rational basis review as an economic or social regulation. The cases nudge to the breaking point a dangerous game of push-and-pull between the Court’s conservative and liberal justices …

Latinx Digital Memory: Identity Making In Real Time, Melissa Villa-Nicholas

Graduate School of Library and Information Studies Faculty Publications

Recently, there has been an increase in cultural Latinx social media platforms, leading to a renaissance of digital visual cultural memory work around Latinidad. This work focuses on how Latinx digital memory participates in an ongoing identity formation in real time, both in resistance to and collusion with American cultural values. By looking at popular visual Latinx social media accounts, this article explores how Latinx identity is constructed and adapted in real time, through Latinx social media platforms. Three main trends are noted as arising from Latinx social media: nostalgia around Latinx identity, the corporate sponsorship of Latinx memory, and …

Activist Directors And Agency Costs: What Happens When An Activist Director Goes On The Board, John C. Coffee Jr., Robert J. Jackson Jr., Joshua R. Mitts, Robert E. Bishop Jan 2019

Activist Directors And Agency Costs: What Happens When An Activist Director Goes On The Board, John C. Coffee Jr., Robert J. Jackson Jr., Joshua R. Mitts, Robert E. Bishop

Cornell Law Review

We develop and apply a new and more rigorous methodology by which to measure and understand both informed trading and the agency costs of hedge fund activism. We use quantitative data to show a systematic relationship between the appointment of a hedge fund-nominated director to a corporate board and an increase in informed trading in that corporation's stock (with the relationship being most pronounced when the fund's slate of directors includes a hedge fund employee). This finding is important from two different perspectives. First, from a governance perspective, activist hedge funds represent a new and potent force in corporate governance. …

"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel Jan 2019

"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study examines cosmetic practice, discourse, and material to explore the ways in which face paint, often made from a mixture of foreign and domestic ingredients, challenges the emergent notion of a pure English identity. Within a broader discourse found in recipe books, anti-cosmetic treatises, public and private documents, and plays for public spectacle—as well as court masques—I examine how early modern performances use cosmetic mixtures as theatrical devices to stage, represent, and negotiate anxieties about England’s increased engagement with the nascent global economy. Worn on the permeable surface of the skin, cosmetic material, such as alum, mercury, and mummia, …

Getting Serious With Comedy : Power, Stand-Up Comedy, And American Public Life, Andrew Michael Cutrone Jan 2019

Getting Serious With Comedy : Power, Stand-Up Comedy, And American Public Life, Andrew Michael Cutrone

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This master’s thesis theorizes the political and cultural significance of stand-up comedy as an institution in the contemporary US public sphere, against the dominant perception that it is an enterprise severed from social consequence. Via a critical application of Ferguson’s theorization of power in The Reorder of Things (2012), in addition to a reading of stand-up comedy routines and related public discourse that utilizes feminist and queer of color theory, I show how subjective terrains of race, gender, and sexuality produce the discursive and political materials which organize stand-up discourse and performance in moments of “racial comedy,” “gender comedy,” and …

Dissidence And Displacement : Translation Theory Through The Work Of Natalya Gorbanevskaya, Darren Smith Jan 2019

Dissidence And Displacement : Translation Theory Through The Work Of Natalya Gorbanevskaya, Darren Smith

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purported thesis is intended to aptly discuss the ways in which the particular work of Natalya Gorbanevskaya is able to be translated through the lens of a Daniel Weissbort and how through a full understanding of certain theories allow for certain notions of displacement and loss to traverse cultural boundaries through the act of translation. After a brief introduction, it is important to discuss the necessary background information and its relation to the task of translation before moving into an in-depth analysis of the poet’s work to argue how this displacement is visible through her translated work, before concluding …

A Glittering Dream : Celebration, Spectacle, Power, And Identity In American Cities, 1886-1924, Wyatt Erchak Jan 2019

A Glittering Dream : Celebration, Spectacle, Power, And Identity In American Cities, 1886-1924, Wyatt Erchak

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In July 1886, the city of Albany, New York celebrated the Bicentennial of the granting of its city charter, an event that synthesized and innovated existing forms of spectacle and celebration. Parades of municipal, fraternal, commercial, and military organizations joined orations and elaborate pyrotechnics to mark the occasion. Its central feature—a grand “historical pageant”—was one of the first times a city told the sequential story of its creation using dramatic and mechanical techniques, with expert assistance from Mardi Gras and Carnival float designers.

A Private Matter : Arden Of Faversham And The Early Modern History Play, Jessica Y. Hoffman Jan 2019

A Private Matter : Arden Of Faversham And The Early Modern History Play, Jessica Y. Hoffman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the last fifty years, changes in the study of history have necessitated a questioning of the way we think about historiography and all genres of literature connected to our understanding of history. While the early modern history play genre has not been immune to shifts toward a focus on “social history” (defined as the history of the general population rather than the history of rulers), examining the history play genre in terms of plays that have been excluded from the genre canon shows that there is still a bias toward monarchical history when we study historiography. The anonymous Arden …

Encuentro Con La Precariedad: La Reaparición Del Gitano En El Cine Documental Español De La Crisis De 2008, María Julia De León Hernández

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

In 2008, Spain’s financial crisis had a great impact on the primary sector on which the nation’s ‘economic miracle’ was founded: housing.Land speculation, the increase in housing construction, and easy loans had become one of the hallmarks of twenty-first-century Spanish identity. The crisis del ladrillo (“brick crisis”) plunged the national economy into chaos and condemned many Spanish citizens to job insecurity, loss of earning power, threat of eviction, and put them at high risk of social marginalization. This dissertation studies the unusual proliferation of documentary films during the years surrounding this economic downturn about the ghettoization of the Spanish Gypsy …

Preaching To Episodic Ears: Practicing A Dramaturgical Homiletic, Sunggu Yang Jan 2019

Preaching To Episodic Ears: Practicing A Dramaturgical Homiletic, Sunggu Yang

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

This article is a critical attempt to develop a homiletic methodology for preaching to the episodic self of the 21st century. The British philosopher Galen Strawson contends that postmodern people today do not regard themselves as living out their lives in a diachronic or narrative sense, but rather in an episodic-existential sense. This episodic-existential way of perceiving one’s life has recently posed a significant challenge to the current preaching practice that is mostly composed and delivered from the pulpit through a narrative. This article provides a considerate response to that episodic-existential challenge. Specifically, the article proposes a dramaturgical narrative form …

Hemen Mazumdar: The Last Romantic, Caterina Corni, Nirmalya Kumar Jan 2019

Hemen Mazumdar: The Last Romantic, Caterina Corni, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Hemendranath Mazumdar, popularly referred to as Hemen Mazumdar, was born 1894 in Gachihata village of Mymensingh district, which is currently part of Bangladesh. Coming from a relatively wealthy landowning family, at the age of sixteen, Hemen dropped out of school and ran away to Calcutta to pursue his passion for painting. He enrolled at the Government College of Art in 1911, but left in 1912 for another institution, Jubilee Art Academy. By 1915, he left Jubilee Art Academy to start earning his living through portrait painting. Abanindranath Tagore’s coterie had banished any artist following the western academic approach. In response, …
