Can Online Media-Literacy Education Mitigate The Effects Of A Toxic Media?, Patricia Tefo Jan 2019

Can Online Media-Literacy Education Mitigate The Effects Of A Toxic Media?, Patricia Tefo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Media-literacy education provides a way for people to assess and critically evaluate media images. Traditional media literacy programs have mitigated the negative effects of idealized media imagery such as reduced self-esteem, eating-disordered attitudes, and low body-satisfaction among women. Although education is moving increasingly to online platforms, the potential of media literacy education delivered online has not been evaluated. Based on social comparison and objectification theories, the purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the comparative efficacy of online and face-to-face media literacy education programs. A quasi-experimental design using pre- and post-media literacy education program questionnaires was used. A mixed-method …

The Correlation Between Manager Work-Life Balance And Employee Engagement, Euart Keith Murvin Jan 2019

The Correlation Between Manager Work-Life Balance And Employee Engagement, Euart Keith Murvin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Globalization, 24-hour connectivity, and the expectation that members of the organization commit increasingly more time to work are the reality in an ever-changing environment. Research shows, however, that these demands have resulted in a significant work-life imbalance that produces the opposite effect of reducing productivity. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between work life balance satisfaction of front-line managers and the engagement of employees whom they supervise. The variables of these study were: work life balance satisfaction of frontline managers measured by Work life Balance and Emotional Support Scale and engagement perception employees measured by Employee …

General Nutrition Knowledge Among High School Students, Annique Cornejo

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Background: Obesity now affects 1-in-5 children and adolescents in the United States. As of 2018, the prevalence of obesity has reached 18.5% and affects about 13.7 million children. Obese children are at increased risk for high blood pressure and high cholesterol that can lead to cardiovascular disease, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Since health habits are commonly established during the formative years, it is imperative that good food choices and basic knowledge about nutrition be taught at an early age. This study examined whether students had received sufficient teaching about nutrition, particularly as it relates …

The Small Publisher’S Guide To Audiobooks, Stephanie Anderson Jan 2019

The Small Publisher’S Guide To Audiobooks, Stephanie Anderson

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

While audiobooks have been around since the invention of the phonograph, the invention of streaming technologies, combined with our increasingly fast-paced, multitasking culture, has caused audiobooks to become the fastest growing market in the publishing industry in recent years. In fact, since 2013 the audiobooks market has seen sales growth of an average of 20% per year, according to studies done by the Audio Publishers Association. However, many small publishers are not entering into the vital “new” frontier and reaching greater markets because of assumptions about the cost-prohibitive nature of creating audiobooks, and a lack of knowledge of the industry …

I'D Blush If I Could: Closing Gender Divides In Digital Skills Through Education, Mark West, Rebecca Kraut, Han Ei Chew

Research Collection Office of Impact

This publication seeks to expose some of these gender biases and put forward ideas to begin closing a digital skills gender gap that is, in most parts of the world, wide and growing. Today, women and girls are 25 per cent less likely than men to know how to leverage digital technology for basic purposes, 4 times less likely to know how to programme computers and 13 times less likely to file for a technology patent. At a moment when every sector is becoming a technology sector, these gaps should make policy-makers, educators and everyday citizens ‘blush’ in alarm. The …

How Do You Perpetuate It-Enabled Change When Top Management Participation And Involvement Diminish?, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Adrian Yong Kwang Yeow, Christina Wai Lin Soh

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Research has demonstrated that sustained top management participation and involvement are important for IT-enabled change. However, this is not always possible. How IT-enabled change can succeed when top management participation and involvement diminish is an unsolved, but important research question. Method: We perform a 5-year exploratory longitudinal case study. Results: Our data is presented in two parts. We first present the contextual elements (goals, people, structures/processes, and artifacts) during the two years top management was actively participating and involved. For the three-year period where top management participation and involvement diminished, we present the contextual elements, and middle management's enactment …

Explicating Perceived Sustainability-Related Climate: A Situational Motivator Of Pro-Environmental Behavior, Yan Wah Leung, Sonny Rosenthal Jan 2019

Explicating Perceived Sustainability-Related Climate: A Situational Motivator Of Pro-Environmental Behavior, Yan Wah Leung, Sonny Rosenthal

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Individuals take cues from their surroundings when deciding whether to perform pro-environmental behaviors. Previous studies have acknowledged the role of structural, policy, and communication efforts to encourage pro-environmental behavior. Such studies demonstrate the importance of evaluating the external contexts when examining behaviors. Yet, there is a lack of explication of what external context is entailed. Expanding the concept of perceived sustainability-related climate (PSRC) used in organizational communication literature, this study proposes two dimensions that shape PSRC in the workplace—structural cues and social cues. The study then generalizes PSRC such that it is applicable in contexts beyond the workplace and proposes …

The Convergence Of Adr And Odr Within The Courts: The Impact On Access To Justice, Dorcas Quek Anderson

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The complexion of justicewithin many judiciaries has changed dramatically through the influence of twoglobal movements – the modern alternative dispute resolution (ADR) movement andthe more recent development of online dispute resolution (ODR). The former waveled to the creation of multi-door courthouses, court-annexed mediationprogrammes and innovations such as judicial settlement conferences. In the last decade, the rapid growth of ODRhas precipitated more changes in the administration of justice. Online courts have been designed in Englandand Wales (the Online Solutions Court suggested by Lord Briggs) and BritishColumbia (the Civil Resolution Tribunal). This paper discusses theimpact of the ADR and ODR waves on …

Mediation In The Singapore Family Justice Courts: Examining The Mandatory Mediation Model Under The Judge-Led Approach, Eunice Chua

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In orderto reduce acrimony and the adversarial quality of family litigation, theSingapore family justice framework went through an overhaul in 2014. Surrogacy, Child’S Welfare, And Public Policy In Adoption Applications, Seow Hon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This case note discusses the Singapore High Court case of UKM, in which an order was granted to a gay man to adopt his biological son conceived through a gestational surrogacy arrangement in the United States. In particular, the High Court’s assessment of the welfare of the child and of public policy, in light of two factors—the prohibition of male homosexual acts in section 377A of the Penal Code and the de facto curtailment of domestic surrogacy by Singapore’s restrictive rules relating to the use of assisted reproduction technology services—will be examined.

Rethinking Non-Recognition: Taiwan’S New Pivot To Asean And The One-China Policy, Pasha L. Hsieh Jan 2019

Rethinking Non-Recognition: Taiwan’S New Pivot To Asean And The One-China Policy, Pasha L. Hsieh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The article examines the evolution of Taiwan’s engagement in Southeast Asia since the 1990s as a unique case study in international law and international relations (IR). Under the one-China policy, the evolution of bilateral relations with Taiwan highlights the theoretical concept of recognition premised on identity and status in interstate affairs. The article argues that the states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have established diverse forms of recognition of Taiwan in line with a policy of non-recognition. While such recognition has not amounted to recognition of statehood in international law, it demonstrates the IR concept of recognition …

Pragmatist Ecological Economics: Focusing On Human-Nature Relationships And Social-Ecological Systems, Christopher Aden Armatas

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

I propose pragmatist philosophy as a companion for ecological economics, a research tradition with a focus on addressing sustainability issues and integrating ecological principles, economics, and the broader social sciences. Ecological economics laudable goals include balancing competing values, tradeoffs, and insights for more equitable decision-making. However, the field is built upon somewhat tenuous philosophical and theoretical foundations, which has resulted in a muddled body of literature, concerns about relativistic science, and questions about the future viability of the field. To address such concerns, I propose and articulate pragmatist ecological economics. Generally, joining pragmatism and ecological economics provides established beliefs about: …

Managing Just World Beliefs In An Unjust World For Victims Of Sexual Violence, Lindsey Chatfield Grove Jan 2019

Managing Just World Beliefs In An Unjust World For Victims Of Sexual Violence, Lindsey Chatfield Grove

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The foundational expectations for good things to happen to good people, while bad things happen to bad people, is referred to as the belief in a just world (BJW) hypothesis (Lerner, 1980; 1966). The understanding is that BJW is a deep-rooted belief that when challenged with injustice, an individual implements strategies in order to protect this core belief from shattering (Lerner, 1980). BJW has long explained victim blaming (Hayes, Lorenz, & Bell, 2013; Jones & Aronson, 1973) and a positive relationship with psychological protection for injustice to self (L Bègue & Bastounis, 2003; Lerner & Simmons, 1966; Sutton & Douglas, …

Treating Trauma Within Rural Schools: An Implementation Science Perspective, Heather Marie Halko Jan 2019

Treating Trauma Within Rural Schools: An Implementation Science Perspective, Heather Marie Halko

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

High rates of childhood trauma exposure (65-75%) are concerning given the negative outcomes associated with trauma-related symptoms. Numerous evidence-based practices (EBPs) have been developed to treat posttraumatic stress symptoms; however, schools often experience barriers to implementing these interventions with fidelity. Given the scarcity of service options within rural areas, this qualitative study explored factors that might influence the adoption and implementation of trauma-focused interventions within rural schools using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR; Damschroder et al., 2009) and the Implementation Outcomes Framework (IOF; Proctor et al., 2011). A semi-structured protocol was used to interview clinicians working in rural …

Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao Jan 2019

Methods For Analyzing High Dimensional Data With Applications To The Wearable And Microbiome Data Analysis, Quy Xuan Cao

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Modern studies in medicine, epidemiology, pharmacy and other fields generate high dimensional data. We developed statistical analysis methods for two types of such data: activity and microbiome data. Specifically, reliable measures of the frequency, duration and intensity of physical activity provided by wearable technology were used in the analysis of activity data. Accelerometry-derived measures of physical activity were compared with established predictors of 5-year all-cause mortality in older adults, aged between 50 and 85 years from the 2003- 2006 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, in terms of individual, relative, and combined predictive performance. A total of 33 predictors of …

Understanding Tourism Within A Social-Ecological System: Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, Chelsea Leigh Leven Jan 2019

Understanding Tourism Within A Social-Ecological System: Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, Chelsea Leigh Leven

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Tourism endures as a major component of development strategies worldwide, despite a dearth of documented successes. Tourism failures arise in part from simplistic and reductionist approaches to sustainability and tourism. Successfully implementing tourism to support sustainable futures requires, at a minimum, a more holistic and complex conceptualization than tourism currently receives, including recognition of how human values shape a system. To achieve a more complex understanding of tourism, I analyzed tourism through a social-ecological system (SES) perspective using the paradigm of resilience thinking. Through a case study in Ometepe, Nicaragua, my research considered opportunities for tourism contributions to sustainable futures …

Theme Park Experience: Factors Explaining Amount Of Pleasure From A Theme Park Visit, Time Allocation For Theme Park Activities, Perceived Value, Queuing Quality, Satisfaction, And Loyalty, Maksim Godovykh, Ady Milman, Alsi D.A. Tasci

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A considerable amount of literature describes concepts that predict theme park visitor behavior. Although previous studies made an effort to measure the impact of several variables on theme park visitors’ loyalty, there is a lack of empirical attention on the impact of some consumption variables such as previous experience, perceived queuing quality, waiting time, using of virtual queuing, and the role of anticipating and remembering the visit. The current study introduces several new experience concepts that were not previously discussed in the literature: the amount of pleasure from anticipation, visiting, and remembering the experience, and time allocation for waiting in …

Implementing The Eat, Sleep, Console Approach For Nas Management: Review Of Literature, Amber D. Tilberg

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a growing problem and poses significant burden on the healthcare system.
Evidence summary: Three emerging themes were recognized and further guided the development and execution of the proposed DNP project: 1) A need to improve NAS assessment practices that will decrease frustration, discrepancies, and inconsistent NAS scoring. Despite specific training, inaccuracy and inconsistency still exists among nurses using traditional scoring methods, leading to a longer hospital stay. 2) Family-centered care is vital for infants with NAS. Parent education, nurse to parent coaching, and rooming-in experiences build parental competence and confidence, nurture a trusting nurse-parent …

Empiricism And Privacy Policies In The Restatement Of Consumer Contract Law, Gregory Klass Jan 2019

Empiricism And Privacy Policies In The Restatement Of Consumer Contract Law, Gregory Klass

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Draft Restatement of the Law of Consumer Contracts includes a quantitative study of judicial decisions concerning businesses’ online privacy policies, which it cites in support of a claim that most courts treat privacy policies as contract terms. This Article reports an attempt to reproduce that study’s results. Using the Reporters’ data, this study was unable to reproduce their numerical findings. This study found in the data fewer relevant decisions, and a lower proportion of decisions supporting the Draft Restatement position. It also found little support for the Draft’s claim that there is a clear trend recognizing privacy policies as …

On Being Old Codgers: A Conversation About A Half Century In Legal Education, Mark Tushnet, Louis Michael Seidman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This conversation, conducted over three evenings, captures some of our thoughts about the last half century of legal education as both of us near retirement. We have edited the conversations so as to eliminate verbal stumbles and present our ideas more coherently, slightly reorganized a small part of the conversation, and added a few explanatory footnotes. However, we have attempted to keep the informal tone of our discussions.
