The Role Of Small Reservoirs In Reducing Reactive N Export Via Denitrification, Margaret Phillips, Wil Wollheim
The Role Of Small Reservoirs In Reducing Reactive N Export Via Denitrification, Margaret Phillips, Wil Wollheim
Honors Theses and Capstones
Reactive nitrogen (N), which harms ecosystem health, has been increasing in the biosphere, leading to higher N export to coastal ecosystems. Although man-made reservoirs can be significant sources of greenhouse gases, they can also retain N, thus reducing N export. Because many dams are relics from industrial hydropower, their removal is becoming increasingly common. It is therefore crucial to understand the ecological tradeoffs of man-made reservoirs. While previous studies have examined nutrient budgets and denitrification at inputs and outputs of large reservoirs, small reservoir dynamics remain understudied. In this study, we measured inputs and outputs of NO3 and N …
Disrupting Complex Systems With Emerging Technologies: A Study On United States Airport Operations, Emily J. Grone
Disrupting Complex Systems With Emerging Technologies: A Study On United States Airport Operations, Emily J. Grone
Honors Theses and Capstones
The number of United States domestic commercial flight passengers are growing every year, which means the number of people checking-in, dropping off their bags, and going through TSA within airports is equally growing. With the increasing number of passengers and aging airports, there are several areas of pain points within airports where passengers hit a bottleneck due to the current systems that airports have in place. There are three main areas that we are going to reference. First the check-in process, where customers have to get their tickets, input identification information, and check-in for their flight. Second, baggage-drop off, where …
Improving Photometry And Astrophotography By Eliminating Dark Frames And Flat Fields, Tom C. Ireland
Improving Photometry And Astrophotography By Eliminating Dark Frames And Flat Fields, Tom C. Ireland
Honors Theses and Capstones
I report on the efforts to improve the dark frames and flat fielding procedure for the charged-coupled device (CCD) camera for the Celestron C14 telescope at the UNH observatory. Dark frames are images taken while the shutter of the camera is closed so that only electronic and dark noise and other internal inconsistencies are recorded. These are important because they allow astronomers to subtract out interference from dark current. Additionally, flat fields are images of the entire field of the telescope so that the brightness in the pixels of the telescope’s field of view is uniform. Flat fields are vital …

The purpose of this study is to understand University of New Hampshire (UNH) students’ opinions about Employee Volunteer Program (EVP), especially what value they place upon EVP and what they are looking for in an ideal EVP. Based on the background and context of EVP among Millennials recently, the paper raises questions about EVP’s value to students generally and how factors like past volunteering experience, gender, and occupation/majors impact students’ valuation of EVP. Data collected from this research leads to several conclusions. Although many students do not fully understand EVP, most of them have positive opinions of the program, leaving …
The Ethics Of Identifiers And Causal Relations In Journalism, Alycia Wilson
The Ethics Of Identifiers And Causal Relations In Journalism, Alycia Wilson
Honors Theses and Capstones
The AP Stylebook, a guide used by many journalism organizations to inform editorial decision making, says identifiers such as race should be included in news stories when "pertinent." But how do we determine when an identifier is pertinent? My analysis of news stories demonstrates that sometimes identifiers can suggest a causal relation between an identity and an event. For example, journalists will identify race in any story involving a white police officer shooting a black suspect, even if the facts of the story suggest that the shooting was justified. Journalists also widely reported the sexual orientation of the victims in …

Determination Of Multi-Messenger Signals From Matter Outflows Of Merger Systems, Ronny Nguyen
Determination Of Multi-Messenger Signals From Matter Outflows Of Merger Systems, Ronny Nguyen
Honors Theses and Capstones
In 2017, LIGO detected gravitational waves from GW170817. This presented for the first time, gravitational waves originating from a neutron star - neutron star merger. Studies of neutron star mergers are significant because the multi-messenger signals in the form of gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves can inform us on the nuclear physics of neutron stars and the creation of heavy elements in the universe. Matter is ejected in the merging process and forms the outflow which provides a neutron-rich environment for rapid neutron capture (r-process) to occur leading to the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. What we detect on Earth are …

Analysis Of Autoguiding For Exoplanet Transit Research At The Unh Observatory, Anthony Cappuccio
Honors Theses and Capstones
This paper will discuss the proper calibration technique for an autoguider of a CCD camera and the results that follow from successful exoplanet transit observations. A brief background on exoplanets, the transit method, and the analysis of their parent stars through photometry will be examined. The results will be presented in a before and after framework that will visually represent the data improvements from autoguiding as graphical Light Curves (LC). The addition of being able to autoguide at the UNH observatory will work towards providing future students with the possibility of performing follow-up ground-based observations and archiving their work online …
Designing And 3d Printing Mm-Wave Lenses Using Kel-F For Use In Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, Kellie Mcguire
Designing And 3d Printing Mm-Wave Lenses Using Kel-F For Use In Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, Kellie Mcguire
Honors Theses and Capstones
This thesis project presents a novel method of 3D printing with the fluoroplastic Kel-F (PCTFE) as an alternative to traditional machining and demonstrates its use in creating target cups for dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) experiments. Kel-F is used by the UNH Nuclear Physics Group in its tensor-polarized target project because the material has several properties that make it well-suited to this purpose: transparency to millimeter-waves, plasticity at cryogenic temperatures, and the absence of any unpaired protons that would add an unwanted background to the NMR signal used to measure nucleon polarization. As this paper shows, these properties are not significantly …
Connecting Composting And Greenhouses: An Energy Capture And Usage Model, Dena M. Hoffman
Connecting Composting And Greenhouses: An Energy Capture And Usage Model, Dena M. Hoffman
Honors Theses and Capstones
At the Organic Dairy Research Farm in Lee, New Hampshire, the practice of aerated static composting is researched for potential heat capture. In early 2019, an Excel model was created to illustrate the ability of greenhouses to retain heat during a cold month of January and the total energy balance for each day. This model shows that an average greenhouse, based on the dimensions of the greenhouse at Kingman Farm, requires an additional, external heat source to supplement its heating needs. By adding the heat generated by the aerated static composting pile to the greenhouse in the Excel model, the …
Conditioning Citizenship Benefits On Satisfying Citizenship Obligations, Michael S. Kirsch
Conditioning Citizenship Benefits On Satisfying Citizenship Obligations, Michael S. Kirsch
Journal Articles
Citizenship status is often discussed in terms of both its benefits and its obligations. A recently enacted federal statute ("the FAST Act"), which denies U.S. passports to certain citizens who owe significant unpaid taxes, provides an opportunity to examine the linkage between citizenship benefits and obligations. In particular, it raises the question under what circumstances, if any, should the benefits of citizenship be conditioned on compliance with the obligations of citizenship.
This Article identifies a typology for situating unpaid taxes within other circumstances under which passports may be denied to US. citizens. It then focuses on the instrumental, constitutional, and …

Community Health Sciences
Background: Wide international variation in the prevalence of disabling low back pain (LBP) among working populations is not explained by known risk factors. It would be useful to know whether the drivers of this variation are specific to the spine or factors that predispose to musculoskeletal pain more generally.
Methods: Baseline information about musculoskeletal pain and risk factors was elicited from 11 710 participants aged 20-59 years, who were sampled from 45 occupational groups in 18 countries. Wider propensity to pain was characterized by the number of anatomical sites outside the low back that had been painful in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Water treatment facilities across the United States are known for providing high-quality drinking water to their residents. However, differences in treatment methods, aging infrastructure, and outdated household plumbing may affect the quality of drinking water by the time it reaches the consumer’s tap. Palm Beach County, Florida, is an area with large socioeconomic contrasts where some families live in dilapidated structures and others reside in luxurious, gated communities. This research highlights the variation of household water quality by determining metal concentrations in tap water samples in communities of different socioeconomic status. In addition, interviews were conducted with personnel from five …

Exploring The Social Process Of Caregiving In Fathers: A Grounded Theory Study, Ashley Rivera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The global agenda for gender equality recognizes unpaid domestic caregiving in the home as the largest barrier to gender equality. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to explore the social process of caregiving in fathers and identify the patterns that influence caregiving in fathers. Recruited from multiple community settings, thirty-five fathers participated in intensive interviews with the investigator. Guided by the Swanson’s (2013) Theory of Caring and using iterative categorization during data analysis, this study proposed the action-based Caregiving in Fathers Theory. The three main themes of the theory are Reinventing the Kitchen Table, Creating a Home …
Flexible Attentional Prioritization Of Working Memory Object Representations, Paige Pytel
Flexible Attentional Prioritization Of Working Memory Object Representations, Paige Pytel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Working memory (WM) is an important cognitive function that, among other duties, allows temporary storage of visual representations of objects observed in the sensorium. The visual aspect of this core cognitive function enables our perception of the identity of objects and where those objects are located in space at any particular time to help direct attention. In a typical working memory task, a cue is presented beforehand to guide attention to which objects in an array to encode. The performance of our WM abilities can be improved on memory tasks by a retrospective cue resented after the encoding process of …

Functional Stress Resistance: The Role Of Protein Kinase G In Modulating Neuronal Excitability In Caenorhabditis Elegans And Drosophila Melanogaster, Stephanie Suzanne Kelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Diseases such as epilepsy, pain, and neurodegenerative disorders are associated with changes in neuronal dysfunction due to an imbalance of excitation and inhibition. This work details a novel electroconvulsive seizure assay for C. elegans using the well characterized cholinergic and GABAergic excitation and inhibition of the body wall muscles and the resulting locomotion patterns to better understand neuronal excitability. The time to recover normal locomotion from an electroconvulsive seizure could be modulated by increasing and decreasing inhibition. GABAergic deficits and a chemical proconvulsant resulted in an increased recovery time while anti-epileptic drugs decreased seizure duration. Successful modulation of excitation and …

Gorgeous Gold Peacocks: Exploring Masculinity In Professional Wrestling, Scott Philip Karasick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis is a historical comprehensive case study on masculinity that explores stereotypes of masculinity in professional wrestling. Working from theories about gender roles, hegemonic masculinity, misogyny (with its disdain for femininity) and heteronormativity, this study utilizes a content analysis of American professional wrestling to look at the gendered basis of how and why wrestling characters are created and how they are successful. Professional wrestlers historically have created characters based in American popular cultures and specifically American gender ideologies of masculinity that are based in hetero-patriarchal cultural ideals. By looking through the history of masculinity and gender stereotypes in professional …
Hurricane Irma Impact And Post-Storm Beach Morphology Evolution In Boca Raton, Fl, Richard M Iii Hart
Hurricane Irma Impact And Post-Storm Beach Morphology Evolution In Boca Raton, Fl, Richard M Iii Hart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Beach morphology changes naturally with seasonal and event-driven variability in the wave climate, as well as due to anthropogenic activities such as erosion mitigation efforts. In 2017, category four Hurricane Irma caused beach erosion and dune overwash in Boca Raton, FL. Immediate post-storm perigean spring tides coupled with typical winter high-wind conditions imposed a regime of spatially and temporally extended meteorologic and morphologic variability. This study evaluates the morphologic evolution and post-storm recovery in the first year following Hurricane Irma. Time-series topographic surveys and surface sediment samples were collected. Patterns of accretion and erosion were evaluated with regionally measured water …
Government As A Stigma Moderator: The Case Of Palm Beach County’S Addiction Recovery Industry, David Moura
Government As A Stigma Moderator: The Case Of Palm Beach County’S Addiction Recovery Industry, David Moura
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation investigates how government affects stigmatization processes. This line of inquiry is important for two reasons. First, existing models of stigmatization leave government out of stigma processes, or only mention government as a sanctioning body that comes in after stigma processes are complete. Organizational theory research therefore underplays the extent to which government action can influence its citizens. Second, stigma research in public administration and government research is limited to examining how government can assist stigmatized groups, and not on how government affects stigma processes. This inadvertently gives the impression that government is not part of stigma processes. While …
Hippocampal Neurogenesis In The Sert Ala56 Mouse Model To Autism, Mase Julieta Maria Di
Hippocampal Neurogenesis In The Sert Ala56 Mouse Model To Autism, Mase Julieta Maria Di
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are not all known, but it is suspected that the serotonin transporter (SERT) plays an important role for some subjects with ASD. Mutations in the SLC6A4 gene, that encodes SERT, including the Ala56 mutation (Gly56Ala), have been found in some autism patients. This mutation makes the transporter more active and reduces the probability of serotonergic neurotransmission in the brain, which is linked to behavioral changes that are associated with core domain deficits of ASD 1. Depression also has been linked to decreases in the availability of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) in the central nervous …
High Spatial Resolution Measurements Using Hydrogeophysical Methods Reveal The Presence Of Hotspots Forbbiogenic Gas Accumulation And Release In The Florida Everglades, Troy Bole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
It is well known that biogenic gas emissions (mainly methane and carbon dioxide) vary both spatially and temporally in peatlands. While most studies have focused on northern systems, several recent studies in tropical and subtropical peatlands (like the Everglades) have revealed the presence of areas of increased gas accumulation and emissions, or hotspots, that may be related to physical and/or biogeochemical changes within the peat's matrix. However, these studies are often limited in terms of sampling volume and resolution or are based in laboratory studies that may not be totally representative of field conditions. In this study we investigate the …
