Residue: Worlds That Inhabit Us, Corrine Binnings Jan 2019

Residue: Worlds That Inhabit Us, Corrine Binnings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

As humans, we walk through this world hauling remnants of all our individual and collective experiences. We are composites of the things we have seen, been through, the things that have touched our lives and marked us permanently. We are, ourselves, residues of the things that shape the worlds we inhabit and the worlds that inhabit us. On a collective level, people of the Caribbean, particularly those of African descent, are residues of a colonial past that was fraught with violence on every level and a successive local legislature that continues to perpetuate much of the exploitative practices of colonialism. …

Predicting Melanoma Risk From Electronic Health Records With Machine Learning Techniques, Aaron N. Richter Jan 2019

Predicting Melanoma Risk From Electronic Health Records With Machine Learning Techniques, Aaron N. Richter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Melanoma is one of the fastest growing cancers in the world, and can affect patients earlier in life than most other cancers. Therefore, it is imperative to be able to identify patients at high risk for melanoma and enroll them in screening programs to detect the cancer early. Electronic health records collect an enormous amount of data about real-world patient encounters, treatments, and outcomes. This data can be mined to increase our understanding of melanoma as well as build personalized models to predict risk of developing the cancer. Cancer risk models built from structured clinical data are limited in current …

Punctuated Identities In Contemporary Italian Cinema, Vincenza Iadevaia Jan 2019

Punctuated Identities In Contemporary Italian Cinema, Vincenza Iadevaia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

At a time of major political disruption in Italy, this dissertation aims to explore the landscape of contemporary Italian Cinema in connection with the nation’s new demographic trends and social configurations. Focusing on a selected, inherently representative group of filmmakers, the current study proposes a new form of film theory that sees the emergence and recognition of multi-ethnic filmmaking in a hitherto largely monocultural context as an indicator of a profound cultural transformation rather than a mere aesthetic tendency. The critical terminology I propose, “punctuated identitties,” document the characteristics of contemporary filmmakers, since they cannot be easily defined under the …

Role Of The N-Terminal Hydrophilic Region Of Amyloid Beta Peptide In Amyloidogenesis, Membrane Interaction And Toxicity Associated With Alzheimer’S Disease, Clifford M. Morris Jan 2019

Role Of The N-Terminal Hydrophilic Region Of Amyloid Beta Peptide In Amyloidogenesis, Membrane Interaction And Toxicity Associated With Alzheimer’S Disease, Clifford M. Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a deleterious neurodegenerative disease caused in major part by the aberrant processing and accumulation of amyloid beta peptides. In this dissertation, we systematically investigated the role of N-terminal region (NTR) residues of amyloid (1-40) (Aβ40) peptide in amyloidogenesis, lipid bilayer membrane interaction and damage, as well as neurotoxicity. Herein, we investigated the role of NTR residues on the aggregation and amyloid fibril formation process, to gain understanding on the electrostatic and hydrophobic constituents of the mechanism. This was achieved by substituting specific charged residues located in the NTR of Aβ40 and investigating their effects through a …

Self-Assembling Of Neutral And Charged Nanoparticles Into Core-Shell Nanohybrids Through Heteroaggregation With Size Control, Kazi Albab Hussain Jan 2019

Self-Assembling Of Neutral And Charged Nanoparticles Into Core-Shell Nanohybrids Through Heteroaggregation With Size Control, Kazi Albab Hussain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Core-shell nanohybrids have wide applications in pollutant degradation. In this study, core-shell nanohybrid was formed through heteroaggregation between neutral nanoparticles (i.e., hematite nanoparticles or HemNPs) and charged nanoparticles (i.e., carboxylated polystyrene nanoparticles or PSNPs). In the dispersant solution of 1 mM NaCl at pH 6.3, HemNPs were neutral and underwent favorable homoaggregation, whereas PSNPs were negatively charged and underwent no homoaggregation. When the two types of particles were mixed, homoaggregation of HemNPs and heteroaggregation between HemNPs and PSNPs took place simultaneously, forming HemNPs-PSNPs heteroaggregates. The transmission electron microscopy images of heteroaggregates show that HemNPs and PSNPs formed core-shell structure in …

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) curates several collections containing Native American human skeletal remains. Some of these collections have not been inventoried nor have they been registered in the National Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) database. As such, FAU is out of compliance with federal regulation and at risk of incurring penalties. I have inventoried the human remains and determined the minimum number of individuals for three of these collections (Canal Point 2, Canal Point 3 and Belle Glade Mound). I have also compiled both an archaeological and cultural history for these sites, as well as participated in …

Stroke Prevention In A Neighborhood With A High Incidence Of Stroke: Exploring A Community’S Understanding, Joy Sessa Jan 2019

Stroke Prevention In A Neighborhood With A High Incidence Of Stroke: Exploring A Community’S Understanding, Joy Sessa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Stroke continues to plague the United States, affecting 795,000 people annually. Although stroke mortality has decreased, the overall incidence of stroke appears essentially unchanged. With a population that is projected to increase in age and stroke risk over the next 10-15 years, this is concerning. Current stroke prevention education may not be adequately tailored to community learning needs. Analyzing existing demographic data within electronic medical records may allow healthcare systems to identify high-risk neighborhoods by geocoding stroke diagnoses and then completing a qualitative analysis within the target community of specific stroke knowledge deficits. That information may then inform stroke prevention …

Survival And Resistance: ‘Disidentification’ In British Migrant Literature, Taylor Blasko Eftimov Jan 2019

Survival And Resistance: ‘Disidentification’ In British Migrant Literature, Taylor Blasko Eftimov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis examines different forms that ‘disidentification,’ as defined by Lisa Lowe and José Esteban Muñoz, takes in Bluebird: A Memoir by Vesna Maric and The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. I further define ‘disidentification’ by narrowing down to two types that I coin ‘social disidentification’ and ‘political disidentification.’ I use ‘social disidentification’ as a model of survival and ‘political disidentification’ as a model of resistance. Throughout, I examine how the construct of multiculturalism effects the formation of migrant identities and because of this I look at which type of ‘disidentification’ the migrant will align with. By examining migrant identities …

Summary Judgement At Dachau: Exploiting The Massacre Of Ss Guards By Allied Liberating Troops At Dachau, Stephen C. Krzeminski Jan 2019

Summary Judgement At Dachau: Exploiting The Massacre Of Ss Guards By Allied Liberating Troops At Dachau, Stephen C. Krzeminski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This research analyzes how American soldiers reacted to the Dachau concentration camp, and offers statistics that counter the arguments made by Holocaust deniers and revisionists. It compares how the Soviets, British, and Americans conducted themselves as they freed other prisoners, and discusses why every camp liberation was dissimilar. Evidence gathered from the liberators who executed the SS disproves the argument that they were premediated killers and emphasizes how unique Dachau’s conditions were on the day of liberation, when compared to other concentration camps. It also directly refutes many arguments made by Holocaust deniers, and addresses their erroneous narratives, statistics, and …

Streamlining Clinical Detection Of Alzheimer’S Disease Using Electronic Health Records And Machine Learning Techniques, Michael J. Kleiman Jan 2019

Streamlining Clinical Detection Of Alzheimer’S Disease Using Electronic Health Records And Machine Learning Techniques, Michael J. Kleiman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Alzheimer’s disease is typically detected using a combination of cognitive-behavioral assessment exams and interviews of both the patient and a family member or caregiver, both administered and interpreted by a trained physician. This procedure, while standard in medical practice, can be time consuming and expensive for both the patient and the diagnostician especially because proper training is required to interpret the collected information and determine an appropriate diagnosis. The use of machine learning techniques to augment diagnostic procedures has been previously examined in limited capacity but to date no research examines real-world medical applications of predictive analytics for health records …

The Competing Roles Of Legal And Social Oppression On Black Americans, Katherine Wilson Mccoy Jan 2019

The Competing Roles Of Legal And Social Oppression On Black Americans, Katherine Wilson Mccoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

It is an axiom among both researchers and the public that American perceptions of the police are racially divided. Previous studies have traditionally focused on interracial perceptions, and have found support for social variables (e.g. education) and legal variables (e.g. prior arrest). The current study seeks to determine if legal oppression or social oppression are better predictors of negative attitudes toward the police among a sample of black university students. Ordinary least squares regression seeks determine which set of factors better predict police perceptions. This intra-racial examination allows future research to parse nuances among police perceptions in the black community. …

The Gendered Rhetoric Of Product Design: Why Are You Over Paying For Your Gender?, Shannon Rose Mcginley Jan 2019

The Gendered Rhetoric Of Product Design: Why Are You Over Paying For Your Gender?, Shannon Rose Mcginley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis identifies the price inconstancies between male and female consumer personal care products, such as razors and deodorants. Economic research suggests consumers purchase products based on their willingness to pay, which depends upon satisfaction granted from the product. If this is true, the question must be asked: what grants these consumers high satisfaction from product purchasing? To answer this question, this thesis investigates the rhetorical effect that stems from product design. Using a rhetorical criticism technique, I analyze how product design allows consumers to project their gender identity. I assert that consumers are interpellated to choose products based on …

The Influence Of Context And Perceptual Load On Object Recognition, Mohammed Islam Jan 2019

The Influence Of Context And Perceptual Load On Object Recognition, Mohammed Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Forster and Lavie (2008) and Lavie, Lin, Zokaei and Thoma (2009) have demonstrated that meaningful stimuli, such as objects, are ignored under conditions of high perceptual load but not low. However, objects are seldom presented without context in the real world. Given that context can reduce the threshold for object recognition (Barenholtz, 2013), is it possible for context to reduce the processing load of objects such that they can be processed under high load? In the first experiment, I attempted to obtain similar findings of the aforementioned studies by replicating their paradigm with photographs of real-world objects. The findings of …

This study investigates the use of film and video as political tools for women to promote collectivity, raise consciousness, and incite both social and political change. Through textual analysis of seven experimental films and videos, from the years 1965-1975, it is apparent that women used techniques of reclamation of three major aspects of identity formation—namely, body, pleasure, and physical space—to individually take steps toward liberation, while adding to the social phenomenon of second-wave feminism. Through this analysis the following question is addressed: how, and why, did the female media makers of the women’s liberation movement and sexual revolution implement both …

Thermodynamic Profiles Of The Interactions Of Suramin, Chondroitin Sulfate, And Pentosan Polysulfate With The Inhibitory Domain Of Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases 3, Timothy Logue Jan 2019

Thermodynamic Profiles Of The Interactions Of Suramin, Chondroitin Sulfate, And Pentosan Polysulfate With The Inhibitory Domain Of Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases 3, Timothy Logue

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP-3) is a protein with multiple functions that include regulating the turnover of the extracellular matrix (ECM) by inhibiting members of the metzincin family. Extracellular levels of soluble TIMP-3 are low, reflecting its binding to components of the ECM including sulfated glycosaminoglycans (SGAGs) and its endocytosis by low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1. Because TIMP-3 inhibits ECM-degrading enzymes, the ability of SGAG mimetics to elevate extracellular concentrations of TIMP3 is of interest for osteoarthritis treatment. However, previous studies of such interactions have utilized immobilized forms of the protein or ligands. Here we have quantified the thermodynamics …
