The purpose of this study is to probe the peristaltic propulsion of a non-Newtonian fluid model with suspended gold nanoparticles. The base fluid is considered to simulate blood using the Carreau fluid model. We model a small annulus as a tube with a peristaltic wave containing a clot propagating towards the tube wall. An external variable magnetic field is also considered in the governing flow. An approximation for long wavelengths and small Reynolds numbers is employed to formulate the governing flow problem. The resulting nonlinear equations are solved using a perturbation scheme. Series solutions are obtained for the velocity profile, …

Waste management comprises the actions required for managing waste material produced from human activities from its source of origin to its final removal. Usually, it collects resources from all forms of matter such as gaseous, liquid, solid, and radioactive. This action is made to avoid the negative effects of wastes on the environment and human wellbeing. The effect of accumulating waste may be highly severe for numerous communities in developing countries such as Egypt. Egyptian neighbourhoods suffer from effects of accumulating local wastes and garbage. Public health and the visual image of the neighbourhoods, in addition to the different social, …

© 2013 IEEE. With the advent of mobile crowdsensing, we now have the possibility of tapping into the sensing capabilities of smartphones carried by citizens every day for the collection of information and intelligence about cities and events. Finding the best group of crowdsensing participants that can satisfy a sensing task in terms of data types required, while satisfying the quality, time, and budget constraints is a complex problem. Indeed, the time-constrained and location-based nature of crowdsensing tasks, combined with participants' mobility, render the task of participants' selection, a difficult task. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive and practical …

Software Engineering Dashboards: Types, Risks, And Future, Margaret-Anne Storey, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The large number of artifacts created or modified in a software project and the flood of information exchanged in the process of creating a software product call for tools that aggregate this data to communicate higher-level insights to all stakeholders involved. In many projects—in software engineering as well as in other domains—dashboards are used to communicate information that may bring insights on the productivity of project activities and other aspects. Stephen Few defines a dashboard as “a visual display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more objectives which fits entirely on a single computer screen so …

How Team Awareness Influences Perceptions Of Developer Productivity, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In their day-to-day work, software developers perform many different activities: they use numerous tools to develop software artifacts ranging from source code and models to documentation and test cases, they use other tools to manage and coordinate their development work, and they spend a substantial amount of time communicating and exchanging knowledge with other members on their teams and the larger software development community. Making sense of this flood of activity and information is becoming harder with every new artifact created. Yet, being aware of all relevant information in a software project is crucial to enable productivity in software development.

Multi-task learning is popular in machine learning and computer vision. In multitask learning, properly modeling task relations is important for boosting the performance of jointly learned tasks. Task covariance modeling has been successfully used to model the relations of tasks but is limited to homogeneous multi-task learning. In this paper, we propose a feature based task relation modeling approach, suitable for both homogeneous and heterogeneous multi-task learning. First, we propose a new metric to quantify the relations between tasks. Based on the quantitative metric, we then develop the task relation layer, which can be combined with any deep learning architecture …

When Human Cognitive Modeling Meets Pins: User-Independent Inter-Keystroke Timing Attacks, Ximing Liu, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Bing Chang, Shujun Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposes the first user-independent inter-keystroke timing attacks on PINs. Our attack method is based on an inter-keystroke timing dictionary built from a human cognitive model whose parameters can be determined by a small amount of training data on any users (not necessarily the target victims). Our attacks can thus be potentially launched on a large scale in real-world settings. We investigate inter-keystroke timing attacks in different online attack settings and evaluate their performance on PINs at different strength levels. Our experimental results show that the proposed attack performs significantly better than random guessing attacks. We further demonstrate that …

Global Inference For Aspect And Opinion Terms Co-Extraction Based On Multi-Task Neural Networks, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang, Rui Xia
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Extracting aspect terms and opinion terms are two fundamental tasks in opinion mining. The recent success of deep learning has inspired various neural network architectures, which have been shown to achieve highly competitive performance in these two tasks. However, most existing methods fail to explicitly consider the syntactic relations among aspect terms and opinion terms, which may lead to the inconsistencies between the model predictions and the syntactic constraints. To this end, we first apply a multi-task learning framework to implicitly capture the relations between the two tasks, and then propose a global inference method by explicitly modelling several syntactic …
Two-Sided Value-Based Music Artist Recommendation In Streaming Music Services, J. Ren, Robert John Kauffman, D. King
Two-Sided Value-Based Music Artist Recommendation In Streaming Music Services, J. Ren, Robert John Kauffman, D. King
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most work on music recommendations has focused on the consumer side not the provider side. We develop a two-sided value-based approach to music artist recommendation for a streaming music scenario. It combines the value yielded for the music industry and consumers in an integrated model. For the industry, the approach aims to increase the conversion rate of potential listeners to adopters, which produces new revenue. For consumers, it aims to improve their utility related to recommendations they receive. We use one year of listening records for 15,000+ Last.fm users to train and test the proposed recommendation model on 143 artists. …
Renegotiation Of Software Outsourcing Contracts, H. Huang, X. Hu, Robert John Kauffman, H. Xu
Renegotiation Of Software Outsourcing Contracts, H. Huang, X. Hu, Robert John Kauffman, H. Xu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fixed-price and time-and-materials contracts are commonly-used contract forms by clients in software outsourcing. The two parties, client and provider, usually renegotiate the testing time after system development occurs. This research investigates the impacts of such renegotiation on the client’s contract choice. Our analysis shows that under both contract forms, renegotiation can incentivize the provider’s effort, and this effect becomes more influential when the provider has higher bargaining power. Compared with a fixedprice contract, a time-and-materials contract can stimulate the provider’s effort based on the terms for monitoring and reimbursement. The results suggest that when the provider has high bargaining power, …

Modeling Location-Based Social Network Data With Area Attraction And Neighborhood Competition, Thanh Nam Doan, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Modeling user check-in behavior helps us gain useful insights about venues as well as the users visiting them. These insights are important in urban planning and recommender system applications. Since check-in behavior is the result of multiple factors, this paper focuses on studying two venue related factors, namely, area attraction and neighborhood competition. The former refers to the ability of a spatial area covering multiple venues to collectively attract check-ins from users, while the latter represents the extent to which a venue can compete with other venues in the same area for check-ins. We first embark on empirical studies to …
An Economic Analysis Of Consumer Learning On Entertainment Shopping Websites, Jin Li, Zhiling Guo, Geoffrey K.F. Tso
An Economic Analysis Of Consumer Learning On Entertainment Shopping Websites, Jin Li, Zhiling Guo, Geoffrey K.F. Tso
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online entertainment shopping, normally supported by the pay-to-bid auction mechanism, represents an innovative business model in e-commerce. Because the unique selling mechanism combines features of shopping and online auction, consumers expect both monetary return and entertainment value from their participation. We propose a dynamic structural model to analyze consumer behaviors on entertainment shopping websites. The model captures the consumer learning process, based both on individual participation experiences and also on observational learning of historical auction information. We estimate the model using a large data set from an online entertainment shopping website. Results show that consumers’ initial participation incentives mainly come …

Person Re-Identification Over Encrypted Outsourced Surveillance Videos, Hang Cheng, Huaxiong Wang, Ximeng Liu, Yan Fang, Meiqing Wang, Xiaojun Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Person re-identification (Re-ID) has attracted extensive attention due to its potential to identify a person of interest from different surveillance videos. With the increasing amount of the surveillance videos, high computation and storage costs have posed a great challenge for the resource-constrained users. In recent years, the cloud storage services have made a large volume of video data outsourcing become possible. However, person Re-ID over outsourced surveillance videos could lead to a security threat, i.e., the privacy leakage of the innocent person in these videos. Therefore, we propose an efFicient privAcy-preseRving peRson Re-ID Scheme (FARRIS) over outsourced surveillance videos, which …

Routing And Scheduling For A Last-Mile Transportation System, Hai Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The last-mile problem concerns the provision of travel services from the nearest public transportation node to a passenger’s home or other destination. We study the operation of an emerging last-mile transportation system (LMTS) with batch demands that result from the arrival of groups of passengers who desire last-mile service at urban metro stations or bus stops. Routes and schedules are determined for a multivehicle fleet of delivery vehicles, with the objective of minimizing passenger waiting time and riding time. An exact mixed-integer programming (MIP) model for LMTS operations is presented first, which is difficult to solve optimally within acceptable computational …

Taxonomic tropes and themes, particularly gender and class, but also race, function together in Brecht’s plays to create overdetermined characterizations. Parallel to these characterizations, he developed a multilayered theory of performance that emphasizes how those who enact text should approach the representation of diverse human types and groups. His encounter with Chinese acting established foundational elements in this theory. In parallel to his theoretical thinking about performance and race in the mid-1930s, Brecht was developing his stance toward operatic representation. While these two conceptual spheres, race and opera, might appear far apart in their content, they parallel each other closely …

New technologies, such as on-demand platforms, algorithmic management, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, virtual presence, people analytics, and gamification are all beginning to have an impact on the world of work. Many contemporary scholars and policymakers view these trends as provoking an existential clash with the traditional employment relationship, the gateway definition for most labor and employment law. While many portray the concern about technology and the on-demand economy as seemingly brand new issues, these contemporary discussions are fundamentally linked to the past as part of a longstanding dialogue on automation and work.
The concerns raised are cyclical, repetitious, and …
Widening Gyre: A Poetics Of Ocean Plastics, Mandy Bloomfield
Widening Gyre: A Poetics Of Ocean Plastics, Mandy Bloomfield
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
By focusing on contemporary experimental poetry that engages with ocean plastics, this essay explores the capacity of ecopoetics to make distinctive interventions in the environmental humanities, and in particular the blue humanities. It examines work by Stephen Collis, Adam Dickinson, and Evelyn Reilly to show how poetry’s forms of juxtaposition, linkage, linguistic porosity, indeterminacy, and nonnarrative temporalities suggest fertile modes of cultural engagement with the more-than-human oceans. This poetry cultivates amplified modes of attention to more-than-human scales of space, time, agency, and modes of relation, and it performs highly material ways of understanding historical, economic, and aesthetic forces affecting the …

Preservation Protocols For Maintaining Species Stability Of Arsenic, Chromium, And Selenium In Water Samples, Contessa Lowery
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Water quality has become an increasing concern in recent years. The environmental challenges surrounding water quality include the presence of dissolved metals and their potential impact on human health and the environment. The challenge is exacerbated because many important metals have multiple oxidation states, which affect the health and environmental behavior of the metal. Many metals are known carcinogens and increased anthropogenic effects have inexorably made metals’ accumulation an imposing threat. Analytical instrumentation has advanced in many areas, making it now possible to measure very low concentrations of multiple elements in water. Current interest is determining the chemical speciation of …
