Increasing Interactivity In Archaeology Courses At The Undergraduate And Graduate Levels, Guy Hepp Dec 2019

Increasing Interactivity In Archaeology Courses At The Undergraduate And Graduate Levels, Guy Hepp

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

This project included revisions to ANTH 140: World Civilizations I, the Rise of Civilization and ANTH 616: History and Theory of Archaeology. For ANTH 140, the required readings, lecture content, group activities, and assessment strategies were all significantly changed or completely replaced. For ANTH 616, subtle changes were made to reading response, group discussion, and online group discussion strategies. Both course revisions resulted in improved classroom atmospheres. This was especially the case for ANTH 140, where average and median grades improved and standard deviations in grades decreased. Improvements to ANTH 616, a small seminar course, were too affected by outliers …

The University Greening Movement: Is Carbon Neutrality Enough To Avert A Climate Crisis?, Sean R. Finlay Dec 2019

The University Greening Movement: Is Carbon Neutrality Enough To Avert A Climate Crisis?, Sean R. Finlay

Student Theses 2015-Present

Because of the impact that educational institutions have on the intellect of the American youth, universities play a crucial role in our nation’s path towards sustainability because of their ability to guide educational focus toward the well-being of the environment. Through a unified movement among these institutions called the “University Greening Movement”, or UGM, campuses are utilizing current technological breakthroughs to their advantage by implementing them into the structures and foundations of their campuses to reduce and even eliminate carbon emissions. However, as monumental as these technological advancements and this movement has been, the question arises of whether or not …

Psychographic Persona Development In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Melody Day Dec 2019

Psychographic Persona Development In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Melody Day

Undergraduate Honors Theses

When interviewed about his Victorian Gothic masterpiece, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde once observed that “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry is what the world thinks of me: Dorian is what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps” (Oscar Wilde). These three characters represent widely different types of people; in light of Wilde’s words, then, what does it truly mean to be Basil, Lord Henry, or Dorian Gray? In other words, what interests, opinions, and values held by these characters determine how each of them differ from one another? In my cross-discipline …

After The Storm: How Environmental Racism Impacted The United States' Response To Hurricane Maria, Hadley Ankrum

Student Theses 2015-Present

In September of 2017, disaster struck the territory of Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island. Although the storm itself caused tremendous damage to both the residents and the environment of Puerto Rico, the inadequate responses of both the United States federal government and local Puerto Rican politicians greatly exacerbated this devastation. This paper examines the efforts of the American government to ameliorate the issues created by the storm through the lens of environmental racism. The introduction will explore the events of the hurricane in order to give the reader context. Chapter 1 draws from the Millennium …

A Woman Surrounded: Exploring The Reintegration Of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Survivors In Nigeria, Nicole Junker Dec 2019

A Woman Surrounded: Exploring The Reintegration Of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Survivors In Nigeria, Nicole Junker

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

There has been a “rapid expansion of publications” on Conflict Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) in the past five years (Campbell 2018:469). However, the more recent focus in this field of knowledge has shifted from qualitative feminist analysis to the use of quantitative and comparative methodology (Houge 2015:83, Bijleveld et al 2009, Boesten 2017:5). This shift has limited the amount of data focusing on individual or small groups of CRSV survivors. In order to examine the reintegration of CRSV survivors, this dissertation returns to the use of qualitative feminist methodology to examine the experiences of reintegration of CRSV survivors in Nigeria. …

A Bifunctional Atpase Drives Tad Pilus Extension And Retraction, Courtney K. Ellison, Jingbo Kan, Jennifer L. Chlebek, Katherine R. Hummels, GaёL Panis, Patrick H. Viollier, Nicolas Biais, Ankur B. Dalia, Yves V. Brun

Publications and Research

A widespread class of prokaryotic motors powered by secretion motor adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases) drives the dynamic extension and retraction of extracellular fibers, such as type IV pili (T4P). Among these, the tight adherence (tad) pili are critical for surface sensing and biofilm formation. As for most other motors belonging to this class, how tad pili retract despite lacking a dedicated retraction motor ATPase has remained a mystery. Here, we find that a bifunctional pilus motor ATPase, CpaF, drives both activities through adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis. We show that mutations within CpaF result in a correlated reduction in the rates of …

Succession Of Microbial Populations And Nitrogen-Fixation Associated With The Biodegradation Of Sediment-Oil-Agglomerates Buried In A Florida Sandy Beach, Boryoung Shin, Ioana Bociu, Max Kolton, Markus Huettel, Joel E Kostka Dec 2019

Succession Of Microbial Populations And Nitrogen-Fixation Associated With The Biodegradation Of Sediment-Oil-Agglomerates Buried In A Florida Sandy Beach, Boryoung Shin, Ioana Bociu, Max Kolton, Markus Huettel, Joel E Kostka

C-IMAGE Publications

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill contaminated coastlines from Louisiana to Florida, burying oil up to 70 cm depth in sandy beaches, posing a potential threat to environmental and human health. The dry and nutrient-poor beach sand presents a taxing environment for microbial growth, raising the question how the biodegradation of the buried oil would proceed. Here we report the results of an in-situ experiment that (i) characterized the dominant microbial communities contained in sediment oil agglomerates (SOAs) of DWH oil buried in a North Florida sandy beach, (ii) elucidated the long-term succession of the microbial populations that developed in …

Effect Of Refractive Index On Photon Natural Mass And Wavelength, Asmaa J. Kadhim Al-Kinani, Adnan Salih Al-Ithawi, Issa M. Kadhim Dec 2019

Effect Of Refractive Index On Photon Natural Mass And Wavelength, Asmaa J. Kadhim Al-Kinani, Adnan Salih Al-Ithawi, Issa M. Kadhim

Baghdad Science Journal

In this article it is proved experimentally that the photon is a particle that has mass and constant wavelength by explaining the effect of refractive index on the wavelength and the natural mass of photon. It is very difficult to measure the mass of photon, a simple and easy process was proposed in this paper to calculate the mass length of photon in vacuum (Y) and in medium (Y*), by measuring the length of laser beam in air (Lair) and in medium (Lmed). A new method was postulated to calculate refractive index by using these relations (n = Y*/Y), and …

The Feasibility Of Vigorous Resistance Exercise Training In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities With Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Stijn Wetering, Alyt Oppewal, Thessa I. M. Hilgenkamp

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Background The cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is high in adults with intellectual disabilities. This CVD risk can potentially be decreased with a resistance training (RT) programme at vigorous intensity, following previous research on successful High‐Intensity Training programmes. Our aim was to explore the feasibility of a vigorous RT‐programme for adults with intellectual disabilities with CVD risk factors. Method Twenty‐four adults with intellectual disabilities with at least one CVD risk factor participated in a 24‐week RT‐programme. The training intensity was increased from novice (50%1RM) to vigorous (75%–80%1RM). Feasibility was based on the achieved training intensity at the end of the RT‐programme. …

The Vden: An Ipt Designed For Usability, Alexander Jaeger

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, headsets are the emphasis of Virtual Reality and the primary reason is that they are easy to develop and demo, lightweight, simple, and aordable. Historically, IPTs have required dedicated rooms due to their large size and experts in order to run and maintain them. These devices are expensive and can be complicated due to mirrors, the number of displays, and the overwhelming size of the infrastructure and computing clusters. The research in minimial IPTs have led up to the use of front-projection and dual GPU gaming computers, however this only works in a few cases. This thesis presents new work …

Defects In Mating Behavior And Tail Morphology Are The Primary Cause Of Sterility In Caenorhabditis Elegans Males At High Temperature, Emily M. Nett, Nicholas B. Sepulveda, Lisa N. Petrella

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Reproduction is a fundamental imperative of all forms of life. For all the advantages sexual reproduction confers, it has a deeply conserved flaw: it is temperature sensitive. As temperatures rise, fertility decreases. Across species, male fertility is particularly sensitive to elevated temperature. Previously, we have shown in the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans that all males are fertile at 20°C, but almost all males have lost fertility at 27°C. Male fertility is dependent on the production of functional sperm, successful mating and transfer of sperm, and successful fertilization post-mating. To determine how male fertility is impacted by elevated temperature, we analyzed …

Constraint And Trade-Offs Regulate Energy Expenditure During Childhood, Samuel S. Urlacher, J. Josh Snodgrass, Lara R. Dugas, Lawrence S. Sugiyama, Melissa A. Liebert

Biostatistics Collaborative Core: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Children’s metabolic energy expenditure is central to evolutionary and epidemiological frameworks for understanding variation in human phenotype and health. Nonetheless, the impact of a physically active lifestyle and heavy burden of infectious disease on child metabolism remains unclear. Using energetic, activity, and biomarker measures, we show that Shuar forager-horticulturalist children of Amazonian Ecuador are ~25% more physically active and, in association with immune activity, have ~20% greater resting energy expenditure than children from industrial populations. Despite these differences, Shuar children’s total daily energy expenditure, measured using doubly labeled water, is indistinguishable from industrialized counterparts. Trade-offs in energy allocation between competing …
