The Role Of National Debts In The Determination Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rate, Ioannis Litsios, Keith Pilbeam Jan 2019

The Role Of National Debts In The Determination Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rate, Ioannis Litsios, Keith Pilbeam

Plymouth Business School

An intertemporal optimization model is developed to examine the determinants of the long-run nominal yen-dollar exchange rate in the presence of national debts. The model is tested empirically using data from Japan and the United States. The proposed theoretical specification is well supported by the data and shows that relative national debts as well as monetary and financial factors may play a significant role in the determination of the long-run nominal exchange rate between the yen and the dollar.

Of Piracy And General Average: Contribution In General Average For Ransom Payment Occasioned By Piratical Activity, Gm Gauci

Plymouth Business School

This article examines the interplay between two ancient legal areas encountered in admiralty law, i.e. general average and piracy; the first is a unique indemnification system, to an extent similar to insurance, described as providing in ancient law ‘security against a certain aspect of the maritime risk, namely that which consists in deliberate sacrifice for the common safety’, whilst the second displays the idiosyncratic approach of admiralty law in providing a marine insurance definition of piracy which is to a substantial extent y at odds with that in public international law. The recent United Kingdom Supreme Court judgment in The …

Methods Of Usability Testing In The Development Of Ehealth Applications: A Scoping Review, Inocencio Maramba, Arunangsu Chatterjee, Craig Newman

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background The number of eHealth applications has exponentially increased in recent years, with over 325,000 health apps now available on all major app stores. This is in addition to other eHealth applications available on other platforms such as PC software, web sites and even gaming consoles. As with other digital applications, usability is one of the key factors in the successful implementation of eHealth apps. Reviews of the literature on empirical methods of usability testing in eHealth were last published in 2015. In the context of an exponentially increasing rate of App development year on year, an updated review is …

Numerical Modelling Of Responses Of Offshore Wave Energy Converters In Extreme Waves, Pierre-Henri Musiedlak Jan 2019

Numerical Modelling Of Responses Of Offshore Wave Energy Converters In Extreme Waves, Pierre-Henri Musiedlak

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Wave Energy is a promising sector for sustainable low-carbon energy production. Despite the effort put in the last decade, concerning problems remained unsolved. Numerical modelling can play a key role in the assessment of extreme responses necessary to the understanding of Wave Energy Converter (WEC) capacity to survive extreme conditions. However, high-fidelity codes are too time-consuming for industries, while codes of lower fidelity are based on major physical assumptions inducing concerning uncertainties. Therefore, the present study - sponsored jointly by DNV GL and the University of Plymouth - develops an hybrid model coupling the low-fidelity model WaveDyn, with a Computational …

Linear And Nonlinear Buckling Analysis Of Castellated Beams, B Kim, S Elaiwi, L-Y Li Jan 2019

Linear And Nonlinear Buckling Analysis Of Castellated Beams, B Kim, S Elaiwi, L-Y Li

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the effect of web openings on the lateral-torsional buckling resistance of castellated beams by using both analytical and numerical methods. The analytical approach is developed based on the principle of minimum potential energy, meanwhile elastic and inelastic numerical solutions obtained using ANSYS software are for the validation of the analytical solutions. The investigations are carried out through the application of uniformly distributed transverse loading on top flange of a castellated beam with common boundary conditions. The developed analytical solutions is can be used for the design and practical use.

Performance Analysis Of Data Fragmentation Techniques On A Cloud Server, Nelson Santos, Salvatore Lentini, Enrico Grosso, Bogdan Ghita, Giovanni Masala

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The advancements in virtualisation and distributed computing have allowed the cloud paradigm to become very popular among users and resources. It allows companies to save costs on infrastructure and maintenance and to focus on the development of products. However, this fast-growing paradigm has brought along some concerns from users, such as the integrity and security of the data, particularly in environments where users rely entirely on providers to secure their data. This paper explores different techniques to fragment data on the cloud and prevent direct unauthorised access to the data. It explores their performance on a cloud instance, where the …

Human Electroencephalogram Based Biomarkers For Detection Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Ali H. Husseen Al-Nuaimi Jan 2019

Human Electroencephalogram Based Biomarkers For Detection Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Ali H. Husseen Al-Nuaimi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive disorder that affects cognitive brain functions and develops many years before there are any clinical manifestations. A biomarker that provides a quantitative measure of changes in the brain in the early stages of AD would therefore be useful for early diagnosis. However, this would involve dealing with large numbers of people because up to 50% of dementia sufferers do not receive a formal diagnosis. Thus, there is a need for accurate, low-cost, robust, and easy to use biomarkers that can be used to detect AD in its early stages. Recent guidelines promote the use …

Network Security Intelligence Centres For Information Security Incident Management, Natalia Miloslavskaya Jan 2019

Network Security Intelligence Centres For Information Security Incident Management, Natalia Miloslavskaya

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Intensive IT development has led to qualitative changes in our living, which are driving current information security (IS) trends and require sophisticated structures and adequate approached to manage IS for different businesses. The wide range of threats is constantly growing in modern intranets; they have become not only numerous and diverse but more disruptive. In such circumstances, organizations realize that IS incidents’ timely detection and prevention in the future (what is more important) are not only possible but imperative. Any delay and only reactive actions to IS incidents put their assets under risk. A properly designed IS incident management system …

Neural Correlates Of Weighted Reward Prediction Error During Reinforcement Learning Classify Response To Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In Depression, Filippo Queirazza, Elsa Fouragnan, J. Douglas Steele, Jonathan Cavanagh, Marios G. Philiastides

School of Psychology

While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for major depressive disorder, only up to 45% of depressed patients will respond to it. At present, there is no clinically viable neuroimaging predictor of CBT response. Notably, the lack of a mechanistic understanding of treatment response has hindered identification of predictive biomarkers. To obtain mechanistically meaningful fMRI predictors of CBT response, we capitalize on pretreatment neural activity encoding a weighted reward prediction error (RPE), which is implicated in the acquisition and processing of feedback information during probabilistic learning. Using a conventional mass-univariate fMRI analysis, we demonstrate that, at the group …
