The Emerging Learning Design Journal
In an age of radical innovation, transforming societies, and globalized relationships, our opportunity to unlock human potential has never been more salient. While a variety of approaches have shown promise in this area, achieving this goal at scale has been hampered by thinking and designs that position learning as a process of knowledge transmission and content acquisition. Clearly content has a significant role in increase people potential, but many designs treat context acquisition as necessary and sufficient, neglecting meaningful engagement with one’s life possibilities as an integral part of the learning process. Instead, herein I posit that relevance, use, and …

Tubes And Androgyny: Comment On "Thinking Through Tubes", Françoise Barbira Freedman
Tubes And Androgyny: Comment On "Thinking Through Tubes", Françoise Barbira Freedman
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In this comment on Stephen Hugh-Jones’s "Thinking Through Tubes" Françoise Barbira Freedman offers a feminist meditation on the semiotics of androgyny in Northwest Amazonian shamanism, ritual life and mythology. By focusing on processes of detotalization and retotalization that move beings from an androgynous state to a single-sex identity and back again, Barbira Freedman reveals a dynamic "one sex, two genders model of androgyny" that could not be further from a concept of androgyny as blurred gender. These movements in and out of a one sex state are largely the preserve of men so that androgynous features of the cosmos are …

Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as an environmentally-friendly way to separate lignin from cellulose and hemicellulose in recalcitrant biomass prior to enzymatic hydrolysis to enhance glucose yields. Rice hulls, a widely-available secondary agricultural residue was pretreated with FA: CC (formic acid and choline chloride in a 2:1 mol ratio) using conductive heating and microwave heating. Pretreated biomass using either heating technique gave glucose titers 100 times higher than raw rice hulls after enzymatic hydrolysis. FTIR analysis shows similar findings for both heating techniques. For biomass pretreatment using DESs, microwave heating requires less than half of the energy (0.10 …
Perceptual Precedence Or Increased Effort?: On The Mechanism Of The Small-Picture-Size Advantage In Category Learning, Toshiya Miyatsu
Perceptual Precedence Or Increased Effort?: On The Mechanism Of The Small-Picture-Size Advantage In Category Learning, Toshiya Miyatsu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
I have previously identified a novel perceptual manipulation that enhances learning of some complex natural categories, and the current dissertation aims to uncover its mechanism. Specifically, learning of categories of tropical fish was enhanced when learned through small pictures (about 2º) compared to large pictures (about 19º). Through analyzing the previous results and extant theories in various domains, I identified two potential mechanisms through which this small-picture-size advantage manifested. The perceptual precedence hypothesis postulates that the processing of local dimensions is prioritized in large pictures and the processing of global dimensions is prioritized in small pictures. Therefore, small picture size …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotic resistance is an increasing threat in today’s society. In order to overcome resistant bacteria, it is necessary to discover new drugs with novel mechanisms of action. This work focuses on the sideromycin pathway, encompassing the biosynthetic production, mechanism of entry and hydrolysis-mediated drug release. Sideromycins are an interesting approach to combat the rise of antibiotic resistance since they provide a different avenue that overcomes problems that arise when entering the cell. The dissertation is separated into distinct sections dealing with the various areas of interest in the sideromycin pathway, particularly for the sideromycin, salmycin, produced by Streptomyces violaceus. The …

Cyclotron Resonance In Graphene Heterostructurescyclotron Resonance In Graphene Heterostructures, Billy Jordan Russell
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
We present observations of cyclotron resonance in graphene Van der Waals heterostructure devices. Such devices provide dramatic improvements in sample quality and allow for ad- vanced electronic control, opening windows on previously inaccessible physics. The design and construction of a dedicated system for the measurement of electronic transport and infrared magnetospectroscopy in microscopic samples of atomically thin materials at cryogenic temperatures is presented. In high-mobility encapsulated monolayer graphene, electron- electron interaction effects are unambiguously observed to impact the interband cyclotron resonance as the Landau level filling factor is varied in a quantizing magnetic field. Additionally, a splitting of transitions involving …

Through the implementation of convolutional and artificial neural networks and feature extraction on electromyographic data different possible architectures are examined with regards to processing time, complexity, and accuracy. It is found that the most accurate architecture is a multi-entry categorical cross entropy convolutional neural network with 100% accuracy. The issue is that it is also the slowest method requiring 9 minutes to run. The next best method found was a single-entry binary cross entropy …
Corrosion-Resistant Non-Carbon Electrocatalyst Supports For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Cheng He
Corrosion-Resistant Non-Carbon Electrocatalyst Supports For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Cheng He
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are a promising portable power source due to their low operating temperature, minimal pollutant generation and fast startup. However, several challenges remain concerning lifetime, reliability, and cost. A critical issue is PEMFC component durability. Platinum supported on high surface area carbon has been one of the most widely used electrocatalysts in PEMFCs. However, carbon corrosion over the course of normal PEMFC operation occurs due to the relatively low standard electrode potential for the carbon dioxide/carbon redox couple (0.207V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). Considering this challenge, it is imperative to identify alternative support materials to …

Gender Differences In Early Communication, Language Acquisition And Development: A Descriptive Study, رشا عبد الرضا سعيد, رشا عبد المنعم عزيز
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Parents pay a significant attention to the first words children utter. However, first words are not the actual beginning of communication. Much earlier, babies begin to communicate their feeling via making eye contact, pointing, crying, squealing, and other gestures. Furthermore, they perceive language earlier than making others understand them. The aim of this paper is to tackle the variations between the two sexes starting from the stages of language acquisition in normal children, the differences between the two genders in language vocalization within each stage. Next, the distinctions in acquiring a particular communicative competence and the causes behind this difference …

Seasonal And Annual Changes Of Rainfall In Iraq During The Period From 1992 To 2010, عبد السلام محمد مايل الجغيفي
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Iraq is suffering from severe drought, a feature inherent in its changing climatic conditions. Water shortage has a negative impact on agricultural land and is associated with high desertification risk. Thus, the determination of moisture conditions over a multi-year period represents a difficult issue. In this paper, monthly and annual precipitation figures from 20 meteorological stations in Iraq were analyzed to provide insight into the seasonal and annual variations of annual changes and time trends in rainfall during the period 1992-2010. The Mann-Kendall non-ranking test was applied to trend detection in the annual series and the Kendall-Theil line was used …

Longitudinal Acoustic Traps: Design, Fabrication, And Evaluation For Biological Applications, Michael Moore Binkley
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Acoustofluidics combine ultrasonic actuation with small-volume microfluidic channels to enable precise, contactless object manipulation for a range of applications from serial chemical processing to blood component separation and single-cell analysis. Micron- to millimeter-scale vibrational waves generate reproducible pressure fields within the microfluidic channels and chambers. By exploiting the material property mismatch between a particle (polymeric and silica beads, cells, etc.) and a suspending fluid, the acoustic radiation force is used to move particles toward regions of low (nodes) or high pressure (antinodes). An understanding of these field-particle interactions is applied to design and implement complicated channel architectures for preferential segregation …

Towards Interpretable Machine Learning With Applications To Clinical Decision Support, Zhicheng Cui
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Machine learning models have achieved impressive predictive performance in various applications such as image classification and object recognition. However, understanding how machine learning models make decisions is essential when deploying those models in critical areas such as clinical prediction and market analysis, where prediction accuracy is not the only concern. For example, in the clinical prediction of ICU transfers, in addition to accurate predictions, doctors need to know the contributing factors that triggered the alert, which factors can be quickly altered to prevent the ICU transfer. While interpretable machine learning has been extensively studied for years, challenges remain as among …

Twenty million Americans suffer from peripheral nerve injury (PNI) caused by trauma and medical disorders, with approximately $150 billion spent in annual health-care dollars in the United States. Even with proper surgical reconstruction, less than 50% of the patients achieve satisfactory functional recovery. The gold standard surgical repair for long gaps (>3cm) is the autologous nerve graft, despite its disadvantages such as donor site morbidity, risk of infection, and increased cost. Alternative methods, such as acellular nerve grafts (ANA), are ineffective for large lesion gaps because of the lack of cells and regeneration factors. Recent efforts have been focused …
