The Fog Of Warnings: How Non-Essential Notifications Blur With Security Warnings, Anthony Vance, David Eargle, Jeffrey Jenkins, C. Brock Kirwan, Bonnie Brinton Anderson

Adherence to security warnings continues to be an important problem in information security. Although users may fail to heed a security warning for a variety of reasons, a major contributor is habituation, which is decreased response to repeated stimulation. However, the scope of this problem may actually be much broader than previously thought because of the neurobiological phenomenon of generalization. Whereas habituation describes a diminished response with repetitions of the same stimulus, generalization occurs when habituation to one stimulus carries over to other novel stimuli that are similar in appearance.
Generalization has important implications for the domains of usable security …

This paper revisits the problem of individual risk assessment in the layered security model. It contributes to the concept of balancing security and privacy via cognitive-centric machine called an ‘e-interviewer’. Cognitive checkpoint is a cyber-physical security frontier in masstransit hubs that provides an automated screening using all types of identity (attributed, biometric, and biographical) from both physical and virtual worlds. We investigate how the development of the next generation of watchlist for rapid screening impacts a sensitive balancing mechanism between security and privacy. We identify directions of such an impact, trends in watchlist technologies, and propose ways to mitigate the …
A Strategy Of Truth: Andreas Feininger And The Creation Of Propaganda For The Office Of War Information, 1942, James Swensen
A Strategy Of Truth: Andreas Feininger And The Creation Of Propaganda For The Office Of War Information, 1942, James Swensen
Faculty Publications
In 1942 photographer Andreas Feininger travelled across the United States documenting war industries for the Office of War Information, a New Deal agency. In the midst of world war, Feininger’s straightforward photographs of plane production, copper mining, and other key industries were carefully crafted propaganda designed to combat German rhetoric and bolster public support and confidence in the war effort. Feininger’s style, an admixture of modernist ideas and social detachment, found resonance within US ideological efforts that stressed data and facts, and became known as the ‘Strategy of Truth’.

There is a large demand to fill cybersecurity jobs. To alleviate this need, it is important to generate interest in cybersecurity as a career. One way to do this is through job shadowing and internships. Using design science principles, we have built and tested a playable case study (PCS) where participants can act out a virtual internship and learn relevant cybersecurity skills. We ran a study with students in introductory university courses where they played through a simulated internship at a penetration testing company called CyberMatics. In the study we showed that a PCS format helps students 1) better understand …
Student-Centered Active Learning Environment For Undergraduate Programs (Scale-Up): Effective Tool For Biology?, Melissa Rae Stotz
Student-Centered Active Learning Environment For Undergraduate Programs (Scale-Up): Effective Tool For Biology?, Melissa Rae Stotz
Education
The Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs (SCALE-UP) method incorporates active learning pedagogies into space designed to facilitate effective active learning. Methods predominately used to demonstrate the effectiveness of active learning in STEM fields do not generally account for differences in student characteristics; furthermore, there is a lack of data sources that measure student-centered educational practices. This study examined the impact of SCALE-UP on student achievement in introductory biology, as evidenced by course grades. A regression framework was used to account for student characteristics. Course syllabi, classroom observation data, and an instructor interview were examined to gain deeper understanding …
Enumeration Of Dense Modules In Networks, Yashwanth Goud Durgapathi
Enumeration Of Dense Modules In Networks, Yashwanth Goud Durgapathi
Computer Science
To analyze large networks in various research fields including biology, sociology, and web mining, detection of dense modules (a.k.a. clusters) is a crucial step. Though numerous methods have been proposed to this aim, they often lack mathematical rigor. Namely, there is no guarantee that all dense modules are detected. Here, a novel method for enumerating all dense modules is presented as well as a python program implementing this algorithm. Module detection plays a significant role in variety of modern systems to understand their functionality in depth for example in Biology. In Biology many data bases for the protein-protein interactions are …

Mobile Diabetes Application, Anusha Myneedi
Computer Science
In recent years, Diabetes is becoming a serious health challenge. The prevalence of diabetes has increased with accompanying increases in body weight and diminished physical activity and with increased automation. Effective blood glucose control is essential to maintain good health. However, to monitor blood glucose levels regularly one should go to healthcare center and it’s not possible because of all manner of real time interfaces. To ease this process in this paper, we propose an interactive self-management mobile application where you can monitor Blood Glucose and Blood Pressure values and check all your health-related activities regularly. MobiDiaBTs keeps track of …

Predictive Performance Evaluation Of Different Neural Networks Using Stock Prices, Deepika Nyavanandi
Computer Science
Forecasting stock market prices has been a challenging task due to its volatile nature and nonlinearity. Recently, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become popular in solving a variety of scientific and financial problems including stock market price forecasting. ANNs have the ability to capture the underlying nonlinearity and complex relationship between the dependent and independent variables. This paper aims to compare the performance of various neural networks including Feed Forward Neural Networks (FNN), Vanilla Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks by forecasting stock market prices of three different companies. Empirical results show that the LSTM …

Scalable Particle Swarm Optimization And Differential Evolution Approaches Applied To Classification, Jamil Al-Sawwa
Computer Science
Applying the nature-inspired methods in the data mining area has been gaining more attention by researchers. Classification is one of the data mining tasks which aims to analyze historical data by discovering hidden relationships between the input and the output that would help to predict an accurate outcome for an unseen input. The classification algorithms based on nature-inspired methods have been successfully used in numerous applications such as medicine and agriculture. However, the amount of data that has been collected or generated in these areas has been increasing exponentially. Thus, extracting useful information from large data requires computational time and …
An Interactive System For Cow Herd Performance, Naqib Hossain
An Interactive System For Cow Herd Performance, Naqib Hossain
Computer Science
This paper explores the application-development phases for the Cow Herd Appraisal of Performance System (CHAPS). In 1985, North Dakota State University’s Dickinson Research Extension Center and the North Dakota Beef Cattle Improvement Association (NDBCIA) developed CHAPS as a management tool for cow producers. This was phase 1 development for the CHAPS application. CHAPS was initially built as a Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) program. In phase 2, CHAPS was converted from MS-DOS to a desktop application. The desktop application was named CHAPS 2000. The desktop application lacks modern features, produces error-prone reports, etc. In 2013, North Dakota State University’s Dickinson …

K-Anonymization Implementation Using Apache Spark, Pratik Tortikar
Computer Science
This experiment attempts on data which can reveal a person’s identity to anonymize with k-1 anonymity principle. "Given person-specific field-structured data, produce a release of the data with scientific guarantees that the individuals who are the subjects of the data cannot be re-identified while the data remain practically useful”. The attempt to value the sensitivity and meaningful information with huge amount of data concerning privacy-preserving techniques are maintained to overcome fears with everyone’s delicate data. With this paper, we study the k-anonymity principle algorithm in the context of big data, and introduce a top-down k-anonymization, L-diversity and t-closeness solutions for …
̶D̶̶I̶̶S̶ Abled: A Salutogenic Approach To Design For The Enhancement Of The Ada Design Standards In The Built Environment For The Positive Impact On Mental Health Of Its Inhabitants, Amy Mueller
Architecture Theses
Physical and mental health encompass the overall well-being of a person. However, people seem to immediately observe the physical health of others in society while the concept of “mental health” is left unspoken. The very foundation of the ADA Design Standards used by architects utilize guidelines for those with physical disabilities yet are missing the application of assisting those with mental illness. Consider a bottom-up approach of design that incorporates elements friendly to the psychological side of design. The overarching premise of this project emphasizes that architecture can positively impact the mental health of people and how improved design standards …

Decentralized Hamiltonian Control Of Multi-Der Isolated Microgrids With Meshed Topology, Mohamed Toub, Rush Robinett, Mohamed Maaroufi, Ghassane Aniba
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The new electricity grid of the future, smart grid, can be seen as the interconnection of multiple microgrids. These microgrids are usually composed of distributed energy resources (DERs) that connect to each other in different topologies. Therefore, the modeling and control of meshed microgrids are requisite. This paper presents a mathematical approach for the modeling and decentralized control of multi-DER isolated microgrids (ImGs) with a meshed topology. Based on the advanced control scheme: Hamiltonian surface shaping and power flow control (HSSPFC), decentralized controllers are designed independently using only local information. These controllers regulate the voltage at the point of common …

Effects Of Polyaniline Thickness On Photovoltaic Properties Of Pani/Tio2 Photovoltaic Cells, Akkharaphak Auisakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Polyaniline (PANI) is a cheap conducting polymer that exhibits p-type properties with high conductivity and unique redox properties. In this work, PANI was synthesized directly on TiO2/FTO substrates by electropolymerisation from acidic aqueous solutions of aniline to form PANI/TiO2 p-n junctions with photovoltaic properties. The thickness of the PANI layer was varied by varying electrodeposition time: 15, 30, and 45 min at the same current density of 2 mA cm-2. The thicknesses of the deposited PANI layers were examined with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Short-circuit currents (ISC) and open-circuit voltages (VOC) of fabricated Pt/PANI/TiO2/FTO cells are investigated. It was found …

Argonaute 4 Promotes Genomic Methylation, Kanwalat Chalertpet
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) is the major small RNA-mediated epigenetic pathway in plants. Similar to genome and epigenome editing with the CRISPR-Cas9 system, RdDM is composed of a regulatory protein and a “guide” RNA (gRNA), which recruits the complex to specific genomic locations containing DNA sequences homologous to the RNA sequence. In humans, we found that Argonaute-4 (AGO4) colocalization has a strong correlation to promoter methylation of AGO4-binding genes. Here, we engineered cell-penetrating tagged oligoarginines (R9) tagged AGO4 (R9-AGO4) or xentry tagged AGO4 (X-AGO4) loaded with single guided-RNA (sgRNA) as a tool to specifically add methylation at genome locations where …

Angiogenic Effect Of Salt-Leached Thai Silk Fibroin Scaffolds With Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Tanapong Watchararot
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Angiogenesis plays important role in tissue regeneration. Biomaterials that allow and promote angiogenesis are thus beneficial. Silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds are good candidates for angiogenesis activation because of the biodegradability, biocompatibility, and interaction of extracellular matrices. Human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are also promising for tissue regeneration. This study thus aims to investigate the angiogenic potential of SF scaffolds with/without ADSCs on chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Firstly, the SF scaffolds were fabricated with a porosity of 77.34 ± 16.96% and a pore diameter of 513.95 µm. Then, ADSCs were seeded on SF scaffolds (SF-ADSC scaffolds) and placed on CAM on …

Legal Analysis On Bankability Of Hydro Floating Solar Project In Thailand, Natdanai Aramtiantamrong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In comparison to other types of renewable energy projects, hydro floating solar projects are more complicated as public water resources are used as the location of the project but the electricity is generated from solar power. Accordingly, it is unclear whether the operation of the project falls within the definition of water use that is subject to the Water Resources Act B.E.2561(2018) or not. Several interpretations on the definition of water use in Section 4 of this Act may cause challenges in the bankability of the project. In order to fund the project, the project company generally relies on the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this research, the characteristics and catalytic activity of WO3/TiO2 prepared by sol-gel and solvothermal and their metal modified were investigated. The research was divided into two parts. In the first part, the catalyst performance of WO3/TiO2 catalysts using titania derived from sol-gel and solvothermal methods over ethanol dehydration reaction was examined. The results showed that the different preparation methods essentially altered the physicochemical properties of TiO2 supports. It revealed that the titania derived from solvothermal method denoted as TiO2-SV exhibited higher surface area and pore volume, and larger amounts acid sites than the one obtained from sol-gel method (TiO2-SG). …
