Teen-Computer Interaction (TeenCI) stands in an infant phase and emerging in positive path. Compared to Human-Computer Interaction (generally dedicated to adult) and Child-Computer Interaction, TeenCI gets less interest in terms of research efforts and publications. This has revealed extensive prospects for researchers to explore and contribute in the region of computer design and evaluation for teen, in specific. As a subclass of HCI and a complementary for CCI, TeenCI that tolerates teen group, should be taken significant concern in the sense of its context, nature, development, characteristics and architecture. This paper tends to discover teen’s emotion contribution as the first …

Potential Of Prebiotic Butyrogenic Fibers In Parkinson’S Disease, Thaisa M. Cantu-Jungles, Heather Rasmussen, Bruce R. Hamaker
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Recent evidence supports the involvement of the gastrointestinal tract in PD pathogenesis, including alterations in microbiota and intestinal permeability. Apart from being the preferred energy source for colonic epithelial cells, butyrate is involved in anti-inflammatory, enteroendocrine and epigenetic mechanisms that influence colonic and systemic health, including brain function. A few studies using oral administration of sodium butyrate indicate beneficial effects in PD animal models; however, prebiotic fibers that generate butyrate locally in the gut may be more effective. The design and selection of …
Triplet Population Dynamics And Excited State Relaxation In Chalcogenophene Polymers, Benjamin D. Datko
Triplet Population Dynamics And Excited State Relaxation In Chalcogenophene Polymers, Benjamin D. Datko
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The conventional understanding of intersystem crossing in multichromophoric conju- gated polymers is usually depicted via a pure electronic model, neglecting contributions of vibrations or conformational order. Obtaining accurate structure-function correlations on spin-conversion processes involving photogenerated singlet excitons to triplet excitons and the excited state dynamics requires sensitivity to the subtle conformational ordering within conjugated polymers. This dissertation seeks to understand the kinetics of multi-exciton singlet-triplet interactions and the excited state relaxation of chalcogen containing (S, Se) conjugated polymers. Utilizing single molecule modulation spectroscopy allows determi- nation of triplet formation of individual conjugated polymer chains and aggregates. This technique resolves triplet-induced …

Depolymerization Of Fractionated Wood By Hydrothermal Liquefaction, Felipe Buendia-Kandia, Nicolas Brosse, Guillain Mauviel, Anthony Dufour
Pyroliq 2019: Pyrolysis and Liquefaction of Biomass and Wastes
Direct thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass produces a mixture of compounds that have to be separated to produce purified building blocks. Moreover, lignin derived products have a detrimental effect on further biological conversion processes, such as fermentation. For all these reasons, it is important to develop an integrated approach for a better fractionation and valorisation of macromolecules (carbohydrates and lignin) in bio-refineries.

Automated Bioacoustics: Methods In Ecology And Conservation And Their Potential For Animal Welfare Monitoring, Michael P. Mcloughlin, Rebecca Stewart, Alan G. Mcelligott
Conservation Biology and Animal Welfare Collection
Vocalizations carry emotional, physiological and individual information. This suggests that they may serve as potentially useful indicators for inferring animal welfare. At the same time, automated methods for analysing and classifying sound have developed rapidly, particularly in the fields of ecology, conservation and sound scene classification. These methods are already used to automatically classify animal vocalizations, for example, in identifying animal species and estimating numbers of individuals. Despite this potential, they have not yet found widespread application in animal welfare monitoring. In this review, we first discuss current trends in sound analysis for ecology, conservation and sound classification. Following this, …

Challenges And Opportunities For The Synthesis Of Novel Pyrolysis Oil Refineries, Manuel Garcia-Perez, Anamaria Pp Pires
Pyroliq 2019: Pyrolysis and Liquefaction of Biomass and Wastes
Bio-oil derived from fast pyrolysis of lingo-cellulosic materials is among the most complex and inexpensive raw oils that can be produced today. Although commercial or demonstration scale fast pyrolysis units can readily produce this oil, this industry has not grown to significant commercial impact due to the lack of bio-oil market pull. In this presentation we will review the challenges and opportunities for bio-oil upgrading and refining. Pyrolysis oil consists of six major fractions. (water 15-30 wt.%, light oxygenates, 8-26 wt. %, mono-phenols, 2-7 wt.%, water insoluble oligomers derived from lignin 15-25wt.%, and water soluble heavy molecules 10-30 wt.%). The …

Predicting The Future: Parental Progeny Investment In Response To Environmental Stress Cues, Leah Gulyas, Jennifer R. Powell
Biology Faculty Publications
Environmental stressors can severely limit the ability of an organism to reproduce as lifespan is decreased and resources are shifted away from reproduction to survival. Although this is often detrimental to the organism’s reproductive fitness, certain other reproductive stress responses may mitigate this effect by increasing the likelihood of progeny survival in the F1 and subsequent generations. Here we review three means by which these progeny may be conferred a competitive edge as a result of stress encountered in the parental generation: heritable epigenetic modifications to nucleotides and histones, simple maternal investments of cytosolic components, and the partially overlapping phenomenon …

Faculty Research 2019
Hereditary demyelinating neuropathies linked to peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) involve the disruption of normal protein trafficking and are therefore relevant targets for chaperone therapy. Using a small molecule HSP90 inhibitor, EC137, in cell culture models, we previously validated the chaperone pathway as a viable target for therapy development. Here, we tested five commercially available inhibitors of HSP90 and identified BIIB021 and AUY922 to support Schwann cell viability and enhance chaperone expression. AUY922 showed higher efficacy, compared to BIIB021, in enhancing myelin synthesis in dorsal root ganglion explant cultures from neuropathic mice. For in vivo testing, we randomly assigned 2-3 …

We present a draft genome assembly for the tropical liverwort, Marchantia inflexa, which adds to a growing body of genomic resources for bryophytes and provides an important perspective on the evolution and diversification of land plants. We specifically address questions related to sex chromosome evolution, sexual dimorphisms, and the genomic underpinnings of dehydration tolerance. This assembly leveraged the recently published genome of related liverwort, M. polymorpha, to improve scaffolding and annotation, aid in the identification of sex-linked sequences, and quantify patterns of sequence differentiation within Marchantia. We find that genes on sex chromosomes are under greater …
The Genesis Of The “Brain-Eating” Amoeba, Alan L. Gillen, Jonathan Augusta, Kurt Schneckenburger
The Genesis Of The “Brain-Eating” Amoeba, Alan L. Gillen, Jonathan Augusta, Kurt Schneckenburger
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Creator made all creatures, including amoebas, with variation and plasticity in their genome for global differences of climate, terrain, and environment. God made all creatures to multiply and fill the earth. Diversification and speciation from the original kind would be normal even in a perfect world. Naegleria fowleri is a global amoeba pathogen that is the causative agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), thus termed “brain-eating.” Many people are evidently exposed, based upon antibody levels, to this amoeba while swimming in warm waters. Only a small percentage succumb to the germ, but once invasion happens, only about 1% survive. …

The Nucleosome Position-Encoding Ww/Ss Sequence Pattern Is Depleted In Mammalian Genes Relative To Other Eukaryotes, Gregory M. Wright, Feng Cui
Articles
Nucleosomal DNA sequences generally follow a well-known pattern with ∼10-bp periodic WW (where W is A or T) dinucleotides that oscillate in phase with each other and out of phase with SS (where S is G or C) dinucleotides. However, nucleosomes with other DNA patterns have not been systematically analyzed. Here, we focus on an opposite pattern, namely anti-WW/SS pattern, in which WW dinucleotides preferentially occur at DNA sites that bend into major grooves and SS (where S is G or C) dinucleotides are often found at sites that bend into minor grooves. Nucleosomes with the anti-WW/SS pattern are widespread …
Adopting Civil Damages: Wrongful Family Separation In Adoption, Malinda L. Seymore
Adopting Civil Damages: Wrongful Family Separation In Adoption, Malinda L. Seymore
Washington and Lee Law Review
The Trump Administration’s new immigration policy of family separation at the U.S./Mexico border rocked the summer of 2018. Yet family separation is the prerequisite to every legal adoption. The circumstances are different, of course. In legal adoption, the biological parents are provided with all the constitutional protections required in involuntary termination of parental rights, or they have voluntarily consented to family separation. But what happens when that family separation is wrongful, when the birth mother’s consent is not voluntary, or when the birth father’s wishes to parent are ignored? In theory, the child can be returned to the birth parents …
Substrate Utilization Of The Emerging Fungal Pathogen, Candida Auris, And The Antifungal Activity Of Select Essential Oils, Ryan Parker
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen that commonly causes nosocomial blood infections in the immunocompromised. Three factors make this emerging pathogen a global threat. First, it is frequently misidentified by commonly used diagnostic platforms. Second, it is able to survive for weeks on fomites. Third, it is almost always drug resistant, sometimes to all three classes of antifungal drugs used to treat Candida infections. The objectives of this study are three-fold. First, two existing methods, population estimation using absorbance-based standard curves and methylene blue viability staining, were investigated as to application in determining Candida auris cell population size and …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Non-perennial streams dominate the extent of stream networks worldwide. Intermittent streams can provide ecosystem services to the entire network—including nitrate uptake to alleviate eutrophication of coastal waters—and are threatened by lack of legal protection. We examined 12 intermittent streams in the temperate, humid climate of the Northeast USA. Over 3 years of monitoring, continuous flow was observed a median of 277 d yr−1, with no-flow conditions from early summer into fall. Estimated median discharge was 2.9 L s−1 or 0.36mm d−1. All intermittent streams originated from source wetlands (median area: 0.27 ha) and the median length of the intermittent stream …

Modification And Characterization Of Chloro-Sugar Derivatives As Anti-Bacterial Agents, Mansi Jani
Theses and Dissertations
Sucralose is an artificial sugar substitute which is most commonly used sweetener among other artificial sweeteners. It is derived from sucrose through a complex chemical process that selectively substitutes three atoms of chlorine for three hydroxyl groups on sucrose molecule, which have shown some inhibition of bacterial growth in gut. The goal of the project was to substitute halide in sucralose in a way that it sustains potential anti-bacterial activity along with sweetening effect, which can be then incorporated into mouthwash formulation. Sucralose is very stable molecule and it also has other physico-chemical advantages which are suitable for our anticipated …

Anthropogenic habitat change can have varied impacts on primates, including both negative and positive outcomes. Even when behavioural shifts are seen, they may reflect decreased health, or simply behavioural flexibility; understanding this distinction is important for conservation efforts. This study examines habitat-related variation in adult and immature morphometrics among diademed sifakas (Propithecus diadema). We collected morphometric data from sifakas at Tsinjoarivo, Madagascar (19 years, 188 captures, 113 individuals). Captures spanned 12 groups, five within continuous forest (“CONT”), and seven in degraded fragments (“FRAG”) where sifakas have lower nutritional intakes. Few consistent differences were found between CONT and FRAG groups. However, …

Crohn's disease (CD) results from dysregulated immune responses to gut microbiota in genetically susceptible individuals, affecting multiple areas of the gastrointestinal tract. Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are tissue-resident innate effector lymphocytes which play crucial roles in mucosal immune defense, tissue repair, and maintenance of homeostasis. The accumulation of IFN-γ-producing ILC1s and increased level of proinflammatory cytokines produced by ILCs has been observed in the inflamed terminal ileum of CD patients. To date, the precise mechanisms of ILC plasticity and gene regulatory pathways in ILCs remain unclear. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) regulates gene expression in …

Climate Change Impacts On Winter Wheat Yield In Northern China, Xiu Geng, Fang Wang, Wei Ren, Zhixin Hao
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
Exploring the impacts of climate change on agriculture is one of important topics with respect to climate change. We quantitatively examined the impacts of climate change on winter wheat yield in Northern China using the Cobb–Douglas production function. Utilizing time-series data of agricultural production and meteorological observations from 1981 to 2016, the impacts of climatic factors on wheat production were assessed. It was found that the contribution of climatic factors to winter wheat yield per unit area (WYPA) was 0.762–1.921% in absolute terms. Growing season average temperature (GSAT) had a negative impact on WYPA for the period of 1981–2016. A …
Delivering Signal-Altering Bacterial Effector Proteins To Mammalian Cells Using Cell-Penetrating Peptide Technology, Robert Dickson
Delivering Signal-Altering Bacterial Effector Proteins To Mammalian Cells Using Cell-Penetrating Peptide Technology, Robert Dickson
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
A major role of the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway in eukaryotes is to activate the bacterial pathogen defense response upon the detection of bacterial products in the environment. This defensive signaling results in the induction of inflammation, the transcription of antimicrobial peptides, the modulation of the cell cycle and cell survival. Some Gram-negative bacteria have evolved needle-like structures called Type III Secretion Systems (T3SS) that secrete signal-altering molecules into the host cell to interrupt signaling pathways that would otherwise lead to the elimination of the bacterial infection. These signal-altering molecules are known as bacterial effector proteins (BEPs). Bacterial …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Microbial species utilize secreted-signaling molecules to coordinate their behavior. Our previous investigations demonstrated a key role for the Candida albicans-secreted quorum-sensing molecule farnesol in modulating Staphylococcus aureus response to antimicrobials in mixed biofilms. In this study, we aimed to provide mechanistic insights into the impact of farnesol on S. aureus within the context of inter-species interactions. To mimic biofilm dynamics, farnesol-sensitized S. aureus cells were generated via sequential farnesol exposure. The sensitized phenotype exhibited dramatic loss of the typical pigment, which we identified as staphyloxanthin, an important virulence factor synthesized by the Crt operon in S. aureus. Additionally, farnesol exposure …

Cogongrass (Imperata Cylindrica (L.) Beauv.) In Louisiana: Cause And Consequence, Lorissa A. Radunzel-Davis
LSU Master's Theses
Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv.), an invasive species from East Asia, is found worldwide and is problematic in several countries. In the United States, it grows primarily in the Southeast, reducing biodiversity by growing in dense patches and potentially causing mortality and reducing value of native and planted pinelands due to a high burning temperature. Using Lee Memorial Forest, a Louisiana State University AgCenter property in Washington Parish as a study site, this thesis explores cogongrass in Louisiana with emphasis on soil microbes and soil legacy effects on native plant species. Cogongrass populations at Lee Memorial Forest were more …
