Cysteine And Cystamine Co-Self-Assembled Monolayers For In Vivo Detection Of Ascorbic Acid, Yue Zhang, Tao-Tao Feng, Wen-Liang Ji, Mei-Ning Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which form highly ordered monolayers on the electrode surface through the gold-suffer bond, have attracted much attention in recent years. This stable layer not only can regulate the wettable properties of surface, but also can act as a promoter towards redox-active molecules. Here, we developed a simple and effective method to construct cysteine and cystamine co-self-assembled monolayer on gold microelectrode for in vivo detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The molar ratio at 1:1 of mixed monolayer has been found the optimum to enhance the electron-transfer kinetics of AA oxidation at low potential (ca. 0.10 V), meanwhile, it …

Road Deicing Salt Effects On The Function And Structure Of Forested Wetlands In Southern New England, Samantha Walker
Road Deicing Salt Effects On The Function And Structure Of Forested Wetlands In Southern New England, Samantha Walker
Master's Theses
Forested wetlands are ubiquitous throughout New England providing critical ecosystem services however; road deicing salt use (NaCl) threaten their ecosystem structure and function. To investigate impacts, we employed a seed bank study and a multi-site field survey of forested wetlands. We collected soils and conducted a full factorial seed bank experiment to test how road salt concentration (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 ppt), frequency of salt exposure (pulse, constant) and water level (surface, 2 cm below surface) affected seedling responses. We identified a salinity threshold of 1-4 ppt that reduced seed bank responses. We surveyed nine road-adjacent red maple …

Colony fidelity and dispersal can have important consequences on the population dynamics of colonial-nesting birds. We studied survival and inter-colony movements of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus; cormorants) nesting at Spider and Pilot islands, located 9 km apart in western Lake Michigan, during 2008–2014. We used live resighting and dead recovery data from both colonies, plus dead recoveries from throughout North America, in a multistate live and dead encounter model to estimate annual survival, inter-colony movements, plus temporary and permanent emigration to unmonitored sites. Annual survival averaged 0.37 (annual process variation, ˆ = 0.07) for hatch-year, 0.78 (ˆ= 0.08) for secondyear, …

Effects Of Different Treatments On Functional Components And Antioxidant Activity Of Prunus Mira Koehne, Zuo Lixu, Liu Changjin, Bi Jinfeng, Lv Jian, Jin Xing, Zhou Mo
Food and Machinery
Effects of supersonic treatment (ST), instant controlled pressure drop (ICPD) treatment and steam blanching treatment (SBT) on functional components and antioxidant activity of Prunus mira Koehne were investigated. Diverse methods, including DPPH, ABTS and FRAP, were used to evaluate antioxidant activity of functional components extracted from Prunus mira Koehne. Relationship between contents of antioxidant substances and antioxidant activities was analyzed by linear fitting method. Compared with the control group, ST induced a significant decline in contents of antioxidant substances and their antioxidant capacity except pectin (P<0.05); ICPD could increase contents of polysaccharide and pectin and improve their antioxidant activities. However, ICPD had adverse effects on polyphenol and flavonoid;SBT induced a remarkable increase in contents of functional components and enhanced their antioxidant capacity (P<0.05). Moreover, SBT reserved more chlorogenic acid, catechin and neochlorogenic acid than other treatment method. Extacts of Prunus mira Koehne had the highest contents of polyphenol [(15.05±0.04) mg GAE/g DB] when treated with steam blanching for 1 min. As steam blanching processing time increased to 3 min, the contents of flavonoid, polysaccharide and pectin of Prunus mira Koehne reached their peak value, (67.40±0.74) mg RE/g DB, (143.95±0.37) mg GE/g DB and (61.81±1.10) mg GalA/g AIR, respectively. Line fitting analysis (P<0.05) presented a positive correlation between contents of polyphenol, flavonoid, polysaccharide and their DPPH radical scavenging activity (R2=0.756, 0.991, 0.820, respectively) . Above all, SBT is supposed to be an …0.05);>

Due to its complex branching structure, direct drug delivery to the remote areas of the lung is a major challenge. Consequently, most therapies, such as those treating pulmonary infection and inflammation, must utilize large systemic dosing, with the potential for adverse side effects. A novel alternative strategy is to use exogenous surfactant, a material capable of distributing throughout the lung, as a pulmonary drug delivery vehicle.
Objective:
Utilize an in vitro transferring system to assess exogenous surfactant (BLES) as a pulmonary delivery vehicle for different therapeutics.
Methods:
An in vitro technique was developed to simultaneously study surfactant delivery and …
Trauma And Violence Informed Care Workshop For Teachers, Christina Amico, Michelle Philippe
Trauma And Violence Informed Care Workshop For Teachers, Christina Amico, Michelle Philippe
Western Research Forum
Teachers play an integral role in the healthy growth and development of their students. Students that have experienced traumatic events, chronic adversity, and structural violence are vulnerable to a myriad of biological, social, emotional, and behavioural impairments (Blaustein, 2013). Problematic classroom behaviour, therefore, could be a reflection of exposure to trauma and violence. As teachers play an important front-line role in the lives of their students (Brunzell, Waters, & Stokes, 2015), it is important that teachers receive relevant and high-quality professional development, particularly in the area of trauma and violence-informed teaching practices. There is a gap in research on effective …
Multifunctional Hybrid Sol-Gel Implant Coatings On Anodized Titanium Substrates To Improve Osseointegration And Antimicrobial Effectiveness, Zach Gouveia
Western Research Forum
To improve patient outcomes in orthopedic and dental implantation procedures, the development of multifunctional implant coatings that can inhibit microbial cell proliferation while promoting osseointegration have been sought out by clinicians. While recent developments in material science and cell biology have seen the development of such coatings, many proposed systems lack clinical translatability. For example, to reach the clinic, modern coating systems must be highly adherent to their substrate (to avoid delamination upon implantation), have sufficient wettability (to promote the fixation of cells), and facilitate the controlled and sustained release of antimicrobial factors (falling within the therapeutic window to prevent …

Attention is the cognitive processing that facilitates the ability to target and attend to relevant environmental stimuli, while filtering out irrelevant or distracting stimuli. Control over selective attention is theorized to be dependent on organized neural communication that stems from the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). To evaluate selective and sustained attention, mice were trained on the novel touchscreen rodent continuous performance task (rCPT), a task designed to emulate the human CPT. In the rodent version, images are continuously presented on a touchscreen, where mice have been trained to selectively respond to one image type while suppressing responses to all others. …

Genomic Analysis of Mitochondria of Metschnikowia
Background
Our current understanding of mitochondrial genomes is biased toward metazoans, which represent the majority of sequenced mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs). The high diversity in size, shape, and gene synteny among yeast mitochondrial genomes make them an appealing alternative to those of metazoans for studying genomic diversity and evolution. Recently, more than 60 draft-genome assemblies of large-spored Metschnikowia species have been determined. Complete mitochondrial genomes of these yeasts, however, are yet to be constructed and characterized. Therefore, I propose to construct and analyze the mitochondrial genomes of all 61 strains of large-spored Metschnikowia species.

Cell-Free Dna Release During Programmed Cell Death In Ischemia Reperfusion Injury, Alexander Dionne, Anthony M. Jevnikar, Zhu-Xu Zhang
Western Research Forum
Transplantation is invariably associated with acute allograft injury caused by ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). This injury causes cells of the allograft to undergo various forms of programmed cell death including apoptosis and necroptosis. During programmed cell death, immunogenic molecules are released from cells, one of which is cell-free DNA (cfDNA). We hypothesize that cfDNA is released by microvascular endothelial cells (MVECs) during programmed cell death of IRI and that cfDNA acts as both a biomarker for cellular injury as well as a biologically active molecule capable of amplifying inflammation and organ injury.
Our results indicate that cfDNA is released by …

Transcriptional Profiling Of Non-Injured Nociceptors After Spinal Cord Injury Reveals Diverse Molecular Changes, Jessica Yasko
Doctoral Dissertations
The work presented here begins to provide insight into the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the transition from acute to chronic pain. Our work employed spinal cord injury (SCI) as a unique model to study chronic pain, and to enhance our knowledge of the transcriptional changes that occur following injury. The studies herein support the idea that SCI alters genetic, cellular, and molecular pathways at distal sites (below the site of injury) such as skin, muscle, and the sensory neurons that project to these regions. We provide evidence that a specific population of sensory neurons located in distal dorsal root …

A Comparison Of Driving Versus Walking Roadkill Surveys On A Section Of Highway 212 In Baldwin County, Georgia, Kori Ogletree
Biology Theses
Due to wildlife mortality along roadways, wildlife managers need an efficient and effective way of surveying and identifying roadkill hotspots—locations that have high wildlife mortality rates. The number of roadkill in hotspots is influenced by animal movements in response to seasonal temperature changes, daily activity, surrounding habitat, road topography and physical road features. Due to ease of implementation and time constraints, driving surveys are more common because walking surveys are more labor intensive and time consuming. From February 2018 to February 2019, two survey methods, driving and walking, were used to monitor a 1.16 km section of Highway 212 in …
