Graduate Teacher Education
There are many instructional strategies available to educators for use in the classroom. With this variety of strategies, there is a responsibility for educators to ensure the strategies selected for use have a positive impact on student learning. One such instructional strategy used in classrooms around the world is inquiry-based learning. This strategy allows students to create their own understanding of content while teachers act as facilitators. Research about inquiry-based learning in the elementary and middle school setting indicates it has a positive impact on student learning. These positive influences on learning include greater academic achievement in multiple content areas …

A Research On Biologically Active Compounds From Black Sea Grass Crab Palaemon Adspersus, L.V. Bal-Prylypko, S.O. Lebskiy, T.K. Lebskaya, A.A. Menchinskaya
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
An investigation has been conducted to study the possibility of isolation in a single technological cycle and purification of a complex of collagenolytic enzymes, and the lipids from hepatopancreas of the Black Sea grass crabs. It was found that the activity of collagenolytic enzymes corresponds to this indicator of enzymes isolated from other crustaceans. Hepatopancreas lipids are characterized by high biological efficiency due to the high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Their total content is as 3 times as the recommended amount for a healthy diet. A high content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic fatty acids has been established.

Using stable isotope measurements of insect tissues to determine origin and migratory patterns is well established. However, isotopically determining nutritional origins of lipids, the primary fuel of migration, has not been as thoroughly researched. We explored isotopic links between diet and stored lipids in laboratory raised True armyworm moths (Mythimna unipuncta) using δ13C and δ2H measurements. Pupae were randomly separated into four groups (n=20) and fed isotopically distinct nectar, each consisting of a combination of high δ13C (C4 sugar), or low δ13C (C3 sugar) carbohydrate, with high δ2H (deuterium spiked), …
Regulation Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Sensitivity By Torc1 Signalling In Yeast, Khadija Ahmed, Patrick Lajoie
Regulation Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Sensitivity By Torc1 Signalling In Yeast, Khadija Ahmed, Patrick Lajoie
Western Research Forum
Incorrect folding of secretory proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) results in an aberrant accumulation of misfolded proteins (ER stress) and activates a coping mechanism known as the unfolded protein response (UPR). While the mechanisms of UPR activation have been well established, how it integrates with other stress responses remains unclear.
Given that TORC1 is an important regulator of cell growth during protein misfolding stress, we sought to investigate how TORC1 signalling acts in parallel with the UPR to regulate ER stress sensitivity. Our studies employ the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a biochemically traceable model organism that allows for …

Uncovering The Role Of Ovol1 In Placental Stem Cell Differentiation Using Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Maram Albakri, Patrick Lajoie, Stephen Renaud, Gargi Jaju, Hazel Dhaliwal
Western Research Forum
OVOL1 is a conserved transcription factor involved in regulating cytrophoblast differentiation in the placenta. Our objective for this study is to use Saccharomyces cerevisiae to uncover the role of OVOL1 in placental stem cell differentiation and proliferation. Previous research suggests that OVOL1 regulates cytotrophoblast progenitor state by regulating genome acetylation. Therefore, our study aims to determine how OVOL1 effect yeast growth and the yeast acetylome, and to use the yeast model to determine downstream targets of OVOL1. In order to understand the role of OVOL1, we will develop a yeast model and employ growth assays to assess growth defects and …

Knocking Out A Negative Regulator Of Hedgehog Signaling Blocks Differentiation Of Cells Into Neurons, Danielle Margaret Spice, Gregory M. Kelly Ph.D.
Western Research Forum
Hedgehog (Hh) signaling, one of many different protein signaling pathways found in mammals, is vital in many stage of neural development. A major negative regulator of Hh signaling is a protein known as Suppressor of Fused (SUFU), which acts to sequester the full length Gli transcription factors, proteins that can turn genes on and off, in the cytoplasm or facilitates its conversion to a repressive form. The P19 embryonal carcinoma cell line is a model of hind-brain neuronal differentiation and the involvement of Hh signaling, in particular the role of SUFU in this process has yet to be explored. We …

A Ph-Sensitive Delivery System For The Prevention Of Dental Caries Using Salivary Protein, Yi Zhu, Yizhi Xiao, Elizabeth Gillies, Walter L. Siqueira
Western Research Forum
Dental caries remains one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. In previous studies, salivary proteins (e.g. histatin 3, statherin) have demonstrated biological functions including the inhibition of crystal growth, antibacterial activities, which are directly related to tooth homeostasis and prevention of dental caries. However, proteins are susceptible to the high proteolytic activities in the oral environment. Therefore, pH-sensitive chitosan nanoparticles (CNs) have been proposed as potential carriers to protect proteins against enzymatic degradation at physiological salivary pH, in addition to swell selectively at lower pH conditions to facilitate the release of the encapsulated proteins, as major oral complications occur …
Generalized Interventional Approach For Causal Mediation Analysis With Causally Ordered Multiple Mediators, Sheng-Hsuan Lin
Generalized Interventional Approach For Causal Mediation Analysis With Causally Ordered Multiple Mediators, Sheng-Hsuan Lin
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Causal mediation analysis has demonstrated the advantage of mechanism investigation. In conditions with causally ordered mediators, path-specific effects (PSEs) are introduced for specifying the effect subject to a certain combination of mediators. However, most PSEs are unidentifiable. To address this, an alternative approach termed interventional analogue of PSE (iPSE), is widely applied to effect decomposition. Previous studies that have considered multiple mediators have mainly focused on two-mediator cases due to the complexity of the mediation formula. This study proposes a generalized interventional approach for the settings, with the arbitrary number of ordered multiple mediators to study the causal parameter identification …
How Does Living In Poverty Affect Infant And Toddlers' Development?, Megan Aalgaard
How Does Living In Poverty Affect Infant And Toddlers' Development?, Megan Aalgaard
Graduate Teacher Education
Research findings showed that significant development takes place during the infant and toddler years of children’s lives, however, children who lived in poverty were often faced with many challenges and life adversities that affected development (Brewer, 2007). Children’s language development, physical health, cognitive development, and social-emotional skills were often negatively impacted when children grew up and lived in poverty (Brito, 2017). Also, distress among parents from the exposure to poverty negatively affected the quality of parent and child interactions (Evans & Kim, 2013). This paper synthesized various available research on poverty’s negative effects on children’s development, as well as discussed …
Neil Schechter Oral History.
Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project
Dr. Neil Schechter begins this interview by describing the state of the pediatric pain field during the late 1970s. As he was training, he "felt it was a bit wrong" to have the disciplines dealing with physical and emotional/mental well-being so divorced from one another, especially with unaddressed psychosocial care for pediatric patients and families during complex chronic conditions such as cancer and sickle cell. Dr. Schechter also recalls a prevalent fear in the medical community of addicting children to pain medication, which kept clinicians from treating children's pain at all. Dr. Schechter questioned why pain was so chronically undertreated …

Food and Machinery
The effects of light, heat, oxygen (air), acid, alkali, enzyme and high temperature and high pressure on the stability of the sesaminol-triglucoside were investigated in this study. The results showed that the light, heat, oxygen (air), alkali (sodium hydroxide), high temperature and high pressure, and α-glucosidase treatments had no significant effects on the stability of the sesaminol-triglycosides. However, the hydrochloric acid, β-glucosidase, α-galactosidase and β-galactosidase treatments resulted in significant decreases in the stability of sesaminol triglucoside. It was indicated that sesaminol-triglucoside was unstable under the treatment of specific acid or enzyme, and could be converted into other compounds.

Upstream Downtown: Theatre Creation Through A Feminist And Multispecies Lens, Morgan Johnson, Alexandra Simpson
The Goose
In the historically masculine Western sciences, we are told we can fully know a being by dissecting, labelling, testing, observing, and documenting. This article explores how multispecies and feminist theatre creation and performance, specifically in the style of clown and bouffon, can work to resist such narratives and offer a more sentient understanding of interspecies relationships. Our investigations focus on our journey as two female creators of Upstream Downtown, a research-based, physical theatre play about salmon and humans finding home in the settler colonial city of Toronto.

Recent studies suggest that empathy induced by narrative messages can effectively facilitate persuasion and reduce psychological reactance. Although limited, emerging research on the etiology of radical political behavior has begun to explore the role of narratives in shaping an individual’s beliefs, attitudes, and intentions that culminate in radicalization. The existing studies focus exclusively on the influence of narrative persuasion on an individual, but they overlook the necessity of empathy and that in the absence of empathy, persuasion is not salient. We argue that terrorist organizations are strategic in cultivating empathetic-persuasive messages using audiovisual materials, and disseminating their message within the …
