Dangerous Abusive Relationships And Sources Of Resilience For South Asian Immigrant Women Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Bushra Sabri, Shreya Bhandari, Anuja Shah

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community

This study explored South Asian immigrant women survivors’ perspectives on intimate partner relationships that could lead to severe violence or a homicide and sources of resilience for South Asian immigrant survivors in the United States. The study recruited 16 South Asian immigrant survivors for in-depth interviews and focus groups. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Survivors shared some characteristics of dangerous partner such as controlling behavior, anger issues, infidelity, alcohol and drug problems, and history of childhood abuse. Incidents of severe physical abuse, threats to kill, possession of a weapon, and suspicious behavior led survivors to feel fearful for their …

Understanding Resistant Organic Carbon In The Ocean: From Microbes To Large-Scale Processes, Mariana Bernardi Bif Jul 2019

Understanding Resistant Organic Carbon In The Ocean: From Microbes To Large-Scale Processes, Mariana Bernardi Bif

Open Access Dissertations

The cycling of bioactive elements on Earth and their allocation into major reservoirs is driven through their biogeochemical transformations. Carbon, for example, is biologically transformed by primary producers that convert CO2 to organic carbon during photosynthesis, which is then respired back to the gaseous form by heterotrophs. The cycling of other elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus and iron, considered essential nutrients for living organisms, are directly linked to carbon through the formation of organic matter resulting from primary production. In the ocean, a portion of organic carbon resists immediate degradation in the euphotic layer and can be exported to the …

Evaluation Of Field Of View Width In Stereo-Vision-Based Visual Homing, Damian Lyons, Benjamin Barriage, Luca Del Signore Jul 2019

Evaluation Of Field Of View Width In Stereo-Vision-Based Visual Homing, Damian Lyons, Benjamin Barriage, Luca Del Signore

Faculty Publications

Visual homing is a local navigation technique used to direct a robot to a previously seen location by comparing the image of the original location with the current visual image. Prior work has shown that exploiting depth cues such as image scale or stereo-depth in homing leads to improved homing performance. While it is not unusual to use a panoramic field of view (FOV) camera in visual homing, it is unusual to have a panoramic FOV stereo-camera. So, while the availability of stereo-depth information may improve performance, the concomitant-restricted FOV may be a detriment to performance, unless specialized stereo hardware …

Gas-Phase Fragmentation Chemistry Of Small Ions, Maha Abutokaikah Jul 2019

Gas-Phase Fragmentation Chemistry Of Small Ions, Maha Abutokaikah

Dissertations

The fragmentation chemistries of small ions are characterized in the gas-phase using mass spectrometry. I utilized experimental data and computational methods to rationalize the mechanisms of fragmentation. Density functional calculations of minima, transition states, product ions, and neutrals were performed for most of the studied systems. These systems are varied widely: Protonated peptides systems (Chapters 2 and 3), lithiated monosaccharides (Chapters 4), and protonated imine, anthracene derivatives (Chapter 5). From the experimental and theoretical data of protonated histidine-containing peptides (Chapters 2), we found that altering the position of the histidine residue had a noticeable effect on the identity of b …

Intraspecific Variation In Worker Body Size Makes North American Bumble Bees (Bombus Spp.) Less Susceptible To Decline, Matthew W. Austin, Aimee S. Dunlap Jul 2019

Intraspecific Variation In Worker Body Size Makes North American Bumble Bees (Bombus Spp.) Less Susceptible To Decline, Matthew W. Austin, Aimee S. Dunlap

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Population declines have been documented in approximately one-third of bumble bee species. Certain drivers of these declines are known; however, less is known about the interspecific trait differences that make certain species more susceptible to decline. Two traits that have implications for responding to rapidly changed environments may be particularly consequential for bumble bee populations: intraspecific body size variation and brain size. Bumble bee body size is highly variable and is likely adaptive at the colony level, and brain size correlates with cognitive traits (e.g., behavioral plasticity) in many groups. Trait variation and plasticity may buffer species against negative effects …

Towards A Decolonial Narrative Ethics, Hille Haker Jul 2019

Towards A Decolonial Narrative Ethics, Hille Haker

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay explores the contribution of two works of German literature to a decolonial narrative ethics. It analyzes the structures of colonialism, taking narratives as a medium of and for ethical reflection, and reinterprets the ethical concepts of recognition and responsibility. This essay examines two stories. Franz Kafka’s Report to an Academy (1917) addresses the biological racism of the German scientists around 1900, unmasking the racism that renders apes (or particular people) the pre-life of human beings (or particular human beings). It also demonstrates that the politics of recognition, based on conditional (mis-)recognition, must be replaced by an ethics of …

Bostock V. Clayton County, Georgia: Brief Of Statutory Interpretation And Equality Law Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of The Employees, Richard Primus

Appellate Briefs

Amici are law professors who specialize in statutory interpretation and/or equality law issues. Amici are well versed in this Court's statutory interpretation and Title VII precedents and have written on these issues. Although amici have otherwise diverse views, they agree that a textualist analysis compels the conclusion that discrimination against individuals because of their sexual orientation or their transgender status is a form of discrimination "because of ... sex" within the meaning of Title VII.

The question presented in these cases is whether Title VII prohibits discrimination against individuals because of their sexual orientation or their transgender status. This Court's …

Appellate Briefs

Amici are legal scholars who teach and write on constitutional law and civil rights law. They submit this brief to call attention to one particular means of resolving this case that would not require the Court to determine whether Title VII prohibits discrimination against transgender individuals based upon their transgender status, as such. More broadly, amici seek to offer guidance on how to interpret Title VII in cases where employers require employees to comply with sex-specific dress, grooming, and presentation requirements in the workplace.

In order to resolve this case, it is not necessary for the Court to decide whether …

Longitudinal Measurement Invariance Of The Child Problematic Trait Inventory In Older Chinese Children, Jie Luo, Xuetong Wong, Meng-Cheng Wang, Xintong Zhang, Jiaxin Deng, Chuxian Zhong, Yu Gao, Shi-San Qi

Publications and Research

The Child Problematic Traits Inventory (CPTI) is a newly developed informant-rated instrument to measure psychopathic traits during early childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the longitudinal measurement invariance of the CPTI in a group of Chinese schoolchildren. Mothers of 585 children aged 8 to 12 years (50% girls) completed the CPTI twice with one-year interval. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the CPTI had strict invariance (i.e., equality of factor patterns, loadings, intercepts, and item uniqueness) across time. Furthermore, the internal consistencies for the CPTI subscales were good at both time points and the stability coefficients over time …

MitoNEET (gene cisd1) is a mitochondrial outer membrane [2Fe-2S] protein and is a potential drug target in several metabolic diseases. Previous studies have demonstrated that mitoNEET functions as a redox-active and pH-sensing protein that regulates mitochondrial metabolism, although the structural basis of the potential drug binding site(s) remains elusive. Here we report the crystal structure of the soluble domain of human mitoNEET with a sulfonamide ligand, furosemide. Exploration of the high-resolution crystal structure is used to design mitoNEET binding molecules in a pilot study of molecular probes for use in future development of mitochondrial targeted therapies for a wide …

The Cioclovina (Romania) calvaria, dated to ca. 33 cal ka BP and thought to be associated with the Aurignacian lithic industry, is one of the few relatively well preserved representatives of the earliest modern Europeans. Two large fractures on this specimen have been described as taphonomic modifications. Here we used gross and virtual forensic criteria and experimental simulations on synthetic bone models, to investigate their nature. Both forensic trauma pattern analysis and experimental models exclude a postmortem origin for the Cioclovina fractures. Rather, they indicate two incidents of blunt force trauma, the second clearly inflicted with a club-like object. The …

Dysregulation of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in body fluids has been reported in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recent studies of various diseases showed that extracellular vesicles (EV) in body fluids can provide different spectra of circulating miRNAs and disease-associated signatures from whole fluid or EV-depleted fraction. However, the association of miRNAs in EVs to PTSD has not been studied. In this study, we performed a comprehensive profiling of miRNAs in whole plasma, extracellular vesicles (EV) and EV-depleted plasma (EVD) samples collected from combat veterans with PTSD and matched controls by …

Short Relative Leg Length Is Associated With Overweight And Obesity In Mexican Immigrant Women, Mireya Vilar-Compte, James Macinko, Beth C. Weitzman, Carlos M. Avendaño-Villela

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: Prior research suggests that undernutrition and enteric infections predispose children to stunted growth. Undernutrition and infections have been associated with limited access to healthy diets, lack of sanitation, and access barriers to healthcare - all associated with human rights. Stunting has also been documented to be a major determinant of subsequent obesity and non-communicable diseases. Short leg length relative to stature during adulthood seems to be a good proxy indicator tracking such barriers, and has been reported to be associated with adverse health effects during adulthood. Our objective was to examine the association between relative leg length (as measured …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Drug-seeking in opioid dependence is due in part to the severe negative emotion associated with the withdrawal syndrome. It is well-established that negative emotional states emerge from activity in the amygdala. More recently, gut microflora have been shown to contribute substantially to such emotions. We measured gene expression in single glia and neurons gathered from the amygdala using laser capture microdissection and simultaneously measured gut microflora in morphine-dependent and withdrawn rats to investigate drivers of negative emotion in opioid withdrawal. We found that neuroinflammatory genes, notably Tnf, were upregulated in the withdrawal condition and that astrocytes, in particular, were highly …

Prejudice Asymmetry: The Cultural Acceptance Of Sexism, Sophie Kuchynka Jul 2019

Prejudice Asymmetry: The Cultural Acceptance Of Sexism, Sophie Kuchynka

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sexism tends to be a culturally accepted form of prejudice. I propose the relatively strong trivialization of societal sexism stems from the unique benefits that men receive from the gender status hierarchy, compared to other types of group-based hierarchies. Three studies examined why people, men in particular, trivialize or justify gender bias in relation to other types of group-based biases. Study 1 was a correlational study that examined whether participants downplay the existence and social harm of gender bias in relation to racial, religious, and sexual orientation bias, moderated by participant gender. Participants reported stronger trivialization and denial of gender …

Stable Isotope Geochemistry Of Shelled Marine Invertebrates: Wide-Ranging Applications, Nasser M. Al-Qattan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mollusks grow by adding discrete growth layers throughout their lifetime (i.e., accretion). More specifically, most marine mollusks precipitate their shells in oxygen isotopic equilibrium with seawater or with a constant offset from equilibrium. The stable oxygen isotope values (δ18O) of their shells are determined by the temperature and δ18O values of the surrounding water during calcification without significant vital effects. In comparison, the stable carbon isotope values (δ13C) of their shells reflect those of the dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13C- DIC) and respired carbon dioxide. Therefore, variations in the oxygen and carbon isotope …

Targeting Pten For Therapy In Cancer And Ptenopathies, Emily Palumbo Jul 2019

Targeting Pten For Therapy In Cancer And Ptenopathies, Emily Palumbo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

PTEN, a dual protein and lipid phosphatase, regulates a myriad of cellular functions including PI3K pathway signaling, cell migration, proliferation, invasion and apoptosis. PTEN mutations often lead to multiple malignancies, including prostate, breast, endometrial, skin and brain cancers, associated with hyperactive PI3K signaling. PTEN mutations have also been associated with a variety of other diseases, classified as PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndromes (PHTS). In addition, compromised function or reduced expression of PTEN due to non-genomic mechanisms are associated with many types of hyperproliferative diseases, such as restenosis and neoplastic diseases, including melanoma, lung, breast, prostate and colon cancers. Although PI3K pathway …

The Interaction Of Phylogeny And Community Structure: Linking The Community Composition And Trait Evolution Of Clades, William D. Pearse, Pierre Legendre, Pedro R. Peres-Neto, T. Jonathan Davies

Ecology Center Publications

Aim

Community phylogenetic studies use information about the evolutionary relationships of species to understand the ecological processes of community assembly. A central premise of the field is that the evolution of species maps onto ecological patterns, and phylogeny reveals something more than species traits alone about the ecological mechanisms structuring communities, such as environmental filtering, competition, and facilitation. We argue, therefore, that there is a need for better understanding and modelling of the interaction of phylogeny with species traits and community composition.

Innovation

We outline a new approach that identifies clades that are ecophylogenetically clustered or overdispersed and assesses whether …
