Learn X Design Conference Series

A series of design studio courses on sustainability and design is initiated in 2017 at Istanbul Bilgi University, Department of Industrial Design. The series aims to lead the students to think, discuss, get aware of their responsibilities on their decisions, about the environment, living things and resources, in design projects. For this purpose, a design studio course was structured encompassing the processes and methods of sustainable design. The topic was the context of a locality in Turkey, outside campus and within daily life, so students would directly relate with these responsibilities. Similarly, the structure and project briefs of the studio …

Transdisciplinary Knowledge: A Systemic Approach To Design Education, Pier Paolo Peruccio, Paola Menzardi, Maurizio Vrenna Jul 2019

Transdisciplinary Knowledge: A Systemic Approach To Design Education, Pier Paolo Peruccio, Paola Menzardi, Maurizio Vrenna

Learn X Design Conference Series

Historically, the design discipline has been strictly connected to the productive sector. For this reason, past design education was mainly related to the world of arts and crafts and technology. With such a vertical specialization, designers could not deeply grasp the potential repercussions of their design choices. Their commitment was largely tied in with mass-production and unconstrained technological innovation. Increased awareness of the complexity of the world has raised in the last decades. Designers nowadays are requested to achieve new transversal skills and competencies, to cope with the incumbent metamorphoses of cultures, societies, economies, and natural environments. Thus, a linear …

A Ux Pedagogy On Multimodal Aspects Of Emotions, Parisa Moradi, Ricardo Sosa, Amabel Hunting

Learn X Design Conference Series

Everyday products are becoming increasingly complex, at a time when the population is progressively ageing. These trends highlight the importance of teaching future designers to create inclusive and meaningful experiences for ageing users interacting with digital technologies and “smart” products. This paper presents a pedagogical approach to evaluate and analyse the affective interaction with smart products. Through the development of active problem-solving scenarios, students learn to understand the multidimensional aspects of emotions and cultivate the skills and dispositions needed to empathise with users. The training requires students to capture users’ emotions through mixed methods and visually analyse the data in …

Dietary aflatoxin exposure is a widespread problem in the developing world and causes severe negative health consequences to humans and livestock animals. A new biological control product, called Aflasafe, has been introduced in Nigeria to mitigate aflatoxin contamination of maize in the field and in storage. No known prior work has estimated how much African agribusinesses using maize for animal feed will pay for aflatoxin-safe maize. This study measured the levels of Aflasafe awareness, surveyed current aflatoxin management practices, and estimated, using choice experiments, willingness to pay (WTP) for aflatoxin-safe maize by Nigerian poultry producers and feed millers. Data was …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpesvirus that establishes a persistent, but generally asymptomatic, infection in most people in the world. However, CMV drives and sustains extremely large numbers of antigen-specific T cells and is, therefore, emerging as an exciting platform for vaccines against infectious diseases and cancer. Indeed, pre-clinical data strongly suggest that CMV-based vaccines can sustain protective CD8+ T cell and antibody responses. In the context of vaccines for infectious diseases, substantial pre-clinical studies have elucidated the effcacy and protective mechanisms of CMV-based vaccines, including in non-human primate models of various infections. In the context of cancer vaccines, however, much …

Altered fire regimes can drive major and enduring compositional shifts or losses of forest ecosystems. In western North America, ponderosa pine and dry mixed‐conifer forest types appear increasingly vulnerable to uncharacteristically extensive, high‐severity wildfire. However, unburned or only lightly impacted forest stands that persist within burn mosaics—termed fire refugia—may serve as tree seed sources and promote landscape recovery. We sampled tree regeneration along gradients of fire refugia proximity and density at 686 sites within the perimeters of 12 large wildfires that occurred between 2000 and 2005 in the interior western United States. We used generalized linear mixed‐effects models to elucidate …

BACKGROUND: Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome (NCBRS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic sequence variants in SMARCA2 which encodes the catalytic component of the chromatin remodeling BAF complex. Pathogenic variants in genes that encode epigenetic regulators have been associated with genome-wide changes in DNA methylation (DNAm) in affected individuals termed DNAm signatures.

METHODS: Genome-wide DNAm was assessed in whole-blood samples from the individuals with pathogenic SMARCA2 variants and NCBRS diagnosis (n = 8) compared to neurotypical controls (n = 23) using the Illumina MethylationEPIC array. Differential methylated CpGs between groups (DNAm signature) were identified and used to generate a model enabling classification …

Microfluidic Gasketless Interconnect Sealed By Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Xiaoxiao Zhao Jul 2019

Microfluidic Gasketless Interconnect Sealed By Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Xiaoxiao Zhao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lab-on-a-chip technologies are widely applied in the field of life sciences and potentially in clinical diagnostics. There is a high demand for standardized, efficient interconnects between components in modular microfluidic systems. Chip-to-chip contactless, microfluidic interconnects, that allow fluid flow between chips, were designed and evaluated. The interconnects are 'gasketless' without the need for O-ring’s or fillers. Specifically, two microfluidic chips are assembled face-to-face and the fluidic ports on each chip were accurately aligned to allow the passage of fluids, through liquid bridges spanning the gap. Formation of the liquid bridges was governed by superhydrophobic films coating the surface around the …

A Rapid Scoping Review Of Gender Inequities In The Medical Profession, Ana M. Viamonte Ros, Sanford M. Markham, Diane Wu, Patrice K. Nicholas

Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal

Introduction: There continue to be large inequities in the representation of women at progressive levels of training and seniority in both academic and community practice settings. Gender inequity in medicine is not only problematic in its own right but has the potential to deliver inequitable outcomes, including the neglect of important research and care that continues to disadvantage women patients. As significant evidence is emerging on gender inequities in the medical profession, it is an opportune time to review the current evidence on the persisting gaps, potential causes, and possible solutions.

Methods: A rapid scoping review was conducted for articles …

The Shifting Landscape Of Medicine: Patents Of Personalized Biologic Treatments And Their Potential Conflicts With Right-To-Try Laws, Johnson T. Laney

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

The United States has gone back and forth over whether its citizens have a moral right to access potentially life sustaining or lifesaving treatment when they are terminally ill. Currently, forty-one states and the US Senate have passed "right to try" laws that permit terminally ill patients to have access to experimental treatments that have not yet received FDA approval. The United States has had a difficult time determining whether a patient has the right to refuse life-sustaining or lifesaving treatment because of fear that the patient is suicidal. The Supreme Court has addressed this problem and determined that the …

Effects Of Ionic Liquid Alkyl Chain Length On Denaturation Of Myoglobin By Anionic, Cationic, And Zwitterionic Detergents, Joshua Y. Lee, Katherine M. Selfridge, Eric M. Kohn, Timothy Vaden, Gregory A. Caputo

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The unique electrochemical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) have motivated their use as solvents for organic synthesis and green energy applications. More recently, their potential in pharmaceutical chemistry has prompted investigation into their effects on biomolecules. There is evidence that some ILs can destabilize proteins via a detergent-like manner; however, the mechanism still remains unknown. Our hypothesis is that if ILs are denaturing proteins via a detergent-like mechanism, detergent-mediated protein unfolding should be enhanced in the presence of ILs. The properties of myoglobin was examined in the presence of a zwitterionic (N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecylglycine betaine (Empigen BB®, EBB)), cationic (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB)), …

Exploration Of Different Classes Of Metrics To Characterize Motor Variability During Repetitive Symmetric And Asymmetric Lifting Tasks, Alireza Sedighi, Maury A. Nussbaum

Orthopedics Articles

The substantial kinematic degrees-of-freedom available in human movement lead to inherent variations in a repetitive movement, or motor variability (MV). Growing evidence suggests that characterizing MV permits a better understanding of potential injury mechanisms. Several diverse methods, though, have been used to quantify MV, but limited evidence exists regarding the merits of these methods in the occupational context. In this work, we explored different classes of methods for characterizing MV during symmetric and asymmetric box lifting tasks. Kinematic MV of both the whole-body center-of-mass (COM) and the box were quantified, using metrics derived from a linear method (Standard Deviation), a …

Contrasting Development Of Canopy Structure And Primary Production In Planted And Naturally Regenerated Red Pine Forests, Laura J. Hickey, Jeff Atkins, Robert T. Fahey, Mark R. Kreider, Shea B. Wales, Christopher M. Gough

Ecology Center Publications

Globally, planted forests are rapidly replacing naturally regenerated stands but the implications for canopy structure, carbon (C) storage, and the linkages between the two are unclear. We investigated the successional dynamics, interlinkages and mechanistic relationships between wood net primary production (NPPw) and canopy structure in planted and naturally regenerated red pine (Pinus resinosa Sol. ex Aiton) stands spanning ≥ 45 years of development. We focused our canopy structural analysis on leaf area index (LAI) and a spatially integrative, terrestrial LiDAR-based complexity measure, canopy rugosity, which is positively correlated with NPPw in several naturally regenerated forests, but …

Growing evidence links household air pollution exposure from biomass-burning cookstoves to cardiometabolic disease risk. Few randomized controlled interventions of cookstoves (biomass or otherwise) have quantitatively characterized changes in exposure and indicators of cardiometabolic health, a growing and understudied burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Ideally, the solution is to transition households to clean cooking, such as with electric or liquefied petroleum gas stoves; however, those unable to afford or to access these options will continue to burn biomass for the foreseeable future. Wood-burning cookstove designs such as the Justa (incorporating an engineered combustion zone and chimney) have the potential …

The Dynamics Of Online Shaming : A Sociological Study Of Hong Kong's Virtual World, Yui Fung Yip Jul 2019

The Dynamics Of Online Shaming : A Sociological Study Of Hong Kong's Virtual World, Yui Fung Yip

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This research studies the “dynamics” of online shaming in the context of Hong Kong society. The term “online shaming” is generally understood to refer to a form of stigmatization, in which people try to condemn “alleged-deviants”. By introducing Erving Goffman’s and Randall Collins’s discussions on the Interaction Ritual, this research offers a sociological explanation for the phenomenon of online shaming, and the interaction mechanism behind it. In particular, I argue that online shaming is not only a practice of condemning “deviant” actors as it has been usually conceptualized. Rather, it is a dynamic interactive process that revolves around different types …

The Effects Of Deepwater Horizon Oil, Dispersants, And Environmental Stressors On The Health Of Two Important Gulf Of Mexico Species, Eastern Oysters And Sheepshead Minnows, Lindsay Jasperse

Doctoral Dissertations

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform on April 20, 2010 initiated the release of 640 million liters of oil into the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). In efforts to prevent the oiling of coastlines, response officials applied nearly 7.5 million liters of the oil dispersant Corexit. Despite these efforts, oil reached over 2100 km of coastline along the northern GOM, including estuaries that serve as important habitats and nurseries. These estuaries are dynamic ecosystems, with constant fluctuations in salinity and dissolved oxygen. While it is well-established that oil is toxic to marine species, gaps remain in the understanding of …

Supporting Beginning Teachers Through Mentorship, Tracy Ehlers Jul 2019

Supporting Beginning Teachers Through Mentorship, Tracy Ehlers

Graduate Teacher Education

Beginning teachers are not always aware of the difficulties in teaching. It can be common for beginning teachers to feel overwhelmed, inadequate, and toil with emotions for the first few years of their career. Mentoring programs are established to help support beginning teachers. When the needs of beginning teachers are met, self-efficacy can be developed. Beginning teachers who are self-efficacious believe that they can achieve goals, accomplish tasks, and manage challenges in their practice. They are more competent and confident in the classroom. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies found that supporting the emotional needs of teachers can positively impact …

Rare Dental Trait Provides Morphological Evidence Of Archaic Introgression In Asian Fossil Record, Shara E. Bailey, Jean-Jacques Hublin, Susan C. Anton

KIP Articles

The recently described Denisovan hemimandible from Xiahe, China [F. Chen et al., (2019) Nature 569, 409–412], possesses an unusual dental feature: a 3-rooted lower second molar. A survey of the clinical and bioarchaeological literature demonstrates that the 3-rooted lower molar is rare (less than 3.5% occurrence) in non-Asian Homo sapiens. In contrast, its presence in Asian-derived populations can exceed 40% in China and the New World. It has long been thought that the prevalence of 3-rooted lower molars in Asia is a relatively late acquisition occurring well after the origin and dispersal of H. sapiens. However, the presence of a …

The master regulator of salicylic acid (SA)-mediated plant defense, NPR1 (NONEXPRESSER OF PR GENES 1) and its paralogs NPR3 and NPR4, act as SA receptors. After the perception of a pathogen, plant cells produce SA in the chloroplast. In the presence of SA, NPR1 protein is reduced from oligomers to monomers, and translocated into the nucleus. There, NPR1 binds to TGA, TCP, and WRKY transcription factors to induce expression of plant defense genes. A list of compounds structurally similar to SA was generated using ChemMine Tools and its Clustering Toolbox. Several of these analogs can induce SA-mediated defense and inhibit …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Mapping network analysis in cells and tissues can provide insights into metabolic adaptations to changes in external environment, pathological conditions, and nutrient deprivation. Here, we reconstructed a genome-scale metabolic network of the rat liver that will allow for exploration of systems-level physiology. The resulting in silico model (iRatLiver) contains 1,882 reactions, 1,448 metabolites, and 994 metabolic genes. We then used this model to characterize the response of the liver's energy metabolism to a controlled perturbation in diet. Transcriptomics data were collected from the livers of Sprague Dawley rats at 4 or 14 days of being subjected to 15%, 30%, or …

The title hydrated salt, tris[hexaamminecobalt(III)] tetraoxidorhenate(VII) tetrakis[hexafluoridorhenate(IV)] hexahydrate, arose unexpectedly due to possible contamination of the K2ReF6 starting material with KReO4. It consists of octahedral [Co(NH3)6] 3+ cation (Co1 site symmetry 1), tetrahedral [ReVIIO4] anions (Re site symmetry 1) and octahedral [ReIVF6] 2 anions (Re site symmetries 1and 3). The [ReF6] 2 octahedral anions (mean Re—F = 1.834 A˚ ), [Co(NH3)6] 3+ octahedral cations (mean Co—N = 1.962 A˚ ), and the [ReO4] tetrahedral anion (mean Re—O = 1.719 A˚ ) are slightly distorted. A network of N—HF hydrogen bonds consolidates the structure. The crystal studied was refined as a …
