Varieties Of The Highly Dispersible And Hypervariable Tree, Metrosideros Polymorpha, Differ In Response To Mechanical Stress And Light Across A Sharp Ecotone, Jill M. Ekar, Donald K. Price, Melissa A. Johnson, Elizabeth A. Stacy

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Premise: The drivers of isolation between sympatric populations of long‐lived and highly dispersible conspecific plants are not well understood. In the Hawaiian Islands, the landscape‐dominant tree, Metrosideros polymorpha, displays extraordinary phenotypic differences among sympatric varieties despite high dispersibility of its pollen and seeds, thereby presenting a unique opportunity to investigate how disruptive selection alone can maintain incipient forms. Stenophyllous M. polymorpha var. newellii is a recently evolved tree endemic to the waterways of eastern Hawai'i Island that shows striking neutral genetic differentiation from its ancestor, wet‐forest M. polymorpha var. glaberrima, despite sympatry of these forms. We looked for evidence for, …

Examining The Help Seeking Experiences Of Youth In Extended Care: A Narrative Ethnography Study, Sarah M. Pennington Jul 2019

Examining The Help Seeking Experiences Of Youth In Extended Care: A Narrative Ethnography Study, Sarah M. Pennington

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This narrative ethnographic study examined the help-seeking experiences of foster youth as they transitioned into adulthood in extended care. The purpose of the study was to understand whether foster youth in extended care report a period of continued support which assisted in the development of their adult roles, relationships, and the knowledge and skills to become productive and satisfied adults. Survivalist Self-Reliance (Samuels & Pryce, 2008) asserts foster youth viewed their adult identities as grounded in independence and standing on their own, or are foster youth influenced by the relationships and the network of support embedded in the extended-care network …

Gender Assignment To Spanish Pseudowords By Monolingual And Basque-Spanish Bilingual Children, Rocio Pérez-Tattam, Maria José Ezeizabarrena, Hans Stadthagen-González, Virginia C. Mueller Gathercole

Faculty Publications

This study examines gender marking in the Spanish of Basque-Spanish bilingual children. We analyze data collected via a production task designed to elicit 48 DPs, controlling for gender of referents and for number and types of morphological cues to grammatical gender. The goals were to determine the extent to which participants rely on biological cues (female referent =>FEM gender, male referent =>MASC gender) and morpho-phonological cues (-a ending =>FEM, -o ending =>MASC, others =>MASC or FEM) to assign gender to pseudowords/novel words; and whether bilinguals’ language dominance (Spanish strong/weak) has an effect. Data were collected …

Assessment Of Culverts And Bridges As Roosting Habitat For Perimyotis Subflavus (Tri-Colored Bat) And Disease Transmission Corridors For Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, Kelly Lutsch Jul 2019

Assessment Of Culverts And Bridges As Roosting Habitat For Perimyotis Subflavus (Tri-Colored Bat) And Disease Transmission Corridors For Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, Kelly Lutsch

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Pseudogymnoascus destructans is an emerging fungal pathogen causing precipitous declines in North American bats due to the development of white-nose syndrome. Since 2006, 34 U.S. states and 7 Canadian provinces have confirmed the presence of P. destructans. Due to the rapid spread of P. destructans across the eastern United States, habitat characterization and disease monitoring has become vital to conserving remnant populations. Bats have been observed in multiple states using non-traditional habitat, such as interstate culverts, for roosting. To investigate their use of anthropogenic structures in coastal Georgia, an area where P. destructans has yet-to-be detected, comprehensive bridge and …

Design, Development, And Field Testing A Visnir Integrated Multi-Sensing Soil Penetrometer, Nuwan K. Wijewardane Jul 2019

Design, Development, And Field Testing A Visnir Integrated Multi-Sensing Soil Penetrometer, Nuwan K. Wijewardane

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The research community in soil science and agriculture lacks a cost-effective and rapid technology for in situ, high resolution vertical soil sensing. Visible and near infra-red (VisNIR) technology has the potential to be used for such sensor development due to its ability to derive multiple soil properties rapidly using a single spectrum. Such efforts must, however, overcome a few challenges: (i) a dry ground soil spectral library that can be used to predict the target soil properties accurately, (ii) a robust design which can acquire high quality VisNIR spectra of soil, (iii) an effective method that can link field intact …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Invasive predators are responsible for almost 60% of all vertebrate extinctions worldwide with the most vulnerable faunas occurring on islands. The brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis) is a notorious invasive predator that caused the extirpation or extinction of most native forest birds on Guam. The success of avian reintroduction efforts on Guam will depend on whether snake-control techniques sufficiently reduce contact rates between brown treesnakes and reintroduced birds. Mouse-lure traps can successfully reduce brown treesnake populations at local scales. Over a 22-week period both with and without active snake removal, we evaluated snake-trap contact rates for mouse- and bird-lure traps. Bird-lure …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Low-energy (0–15 eV) resonance electron attachment to a series of five-membered heterocyclic rings (isoxazole, imidazole, pyrazole, pyrrole, 1-methyl-, and 2-methylimidazole) is studied under gas-phase conditions by means of electron transmission spectroscopy and dissociative electron attachment spectroscopy (DEAS). Experimental spectral features are assigned on the basis of Hartree-Fock and density functional theory calculations. Sharp features, with a width of less than 0.1 eV, observed in the electron transmission spectra of imidazole, pyrazole, and pyrrole close to 0.45 eV, i.e., well below the energy of their lowest-lying π∗ shape resonances detected at 1.90, 1.87, and 2.33 eV, respectively, are associated with …

Management Regime And Habitat Response Influence Abundance Of Regal Fritillary (Speyeria Idalia) In Tallgrass Prairie, K. Mccullough, G. Albanese, D.A. Haukos, A.M. Ricketts, S. Stratton Jul 2019

Management Regime And Habitat Response Influence Abundance Of Regal Fritillary (Speyeria Idalia) In Tallgrass Prairie, K. Mccullough, G. Albanese, D.A. Haukos, A.M. Ricketts, S. Stratton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The >2,570,000-ha Flint Hills ecoregion of Kansas, USA, harbors the largest remaining contiguous tract of tallgrass prairie in North America, a unique system, as the remainder of North America’s tallgrass prairie has succumbed to development and conversion. Consequently, the loss and degradation of tallgrass prairie has reduced populations of many North American prairie-obligate species including the regal fritillary (Speyeria idalia) butterfly. Population abundance and occupied range of regal fritillary have declined >99%, restricting many populations to isolated, remnant patches of tallgrass prairie. Such extensive decline has resulted in consideration of the regal fritillary for protection under the Endangered Species Act. …

Female Protagonist Mega-Archetypes: A Study In Medieval European Romances, Doaa Omran Jul 2019

Female Protagonist Mega-Archetypes: A Study In Medieval European Romances, Doaa Omran

English Language and Literature ETDs

Despite the claim that structuralism has sung its swan song, my research offers new insights in the field of structuralism through archetypal criticism by exploring four female hero mega-archetypes as narrative structures inspired by the Qur’an and the Bible. These scriptural narratives offer tenets, based on narratives and motifs, that, as structural units, create and identify mega-archetypes. This study posits how, rather than being extensions of existing structuralist taxonomies on the male hero monomyth, the female mega-archetypes enrich that monomythical narrative. This work details the structure of the mega-archetypes Zulaikhah (Potiphar’s wife), Sarah and Hagar, the Virgin Mary, and Queen …

Tree Peony Species As An Efficient Source For Α-Linolenic Acid Production, Lihang H. Xie, Qingyu Zhang, Aruna Kilaru, Yanlong Zhang

ETSU Faculty Works

The increasing need for healthy edible oil has driven us to identify α-linolenic acid (ALA)-rich species and identify key biochemical steps in ALA synthesis. Seeds of tree peony species are rich in unsaturated fatty acid content with > 40% ALA in the total fatty acid. However, fatty acid content and composition is variable among the tree peony germplasm. To this extent, a comparative study was carried out to identify the key genes responsible for differential oil accumulation among nine wild tree peony species. Subsequent to analyzing fatty acid content and composition of the seeds from nine tree peony species, a high- …

Molecular And Morphological Variation Among Populations Of Pediomelum Tenuiflorum (Pursh) A.N. Egan (Fabaceae) In Nebraska, Usa, Chauncey L. Kellar Jr., Roxi Kellar

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Individuals of Pediomelum tenuiflorum, “wild alfalfa”, from disjunct populations in Nebraska vary extensively in their overall gestalt. Those in the western and central part of the state have a very slender growth habit, with thin stems and few, small flowers; whereas, those in the southeast have a very robust growth habit with heavy-looking stems and many tightly clustered flowers. For nearly 200 years, taxonomists have alternated between splitting P. tenuiflorum into two species, with the many-flowered morphotype named P. floribundum, and lumping all the morphological variants into one species as they are now. In this study, we investigated …

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Investigating Uk Female Experiences Of Psychosocial Adjustment Following Bariatric Surgery, Mark J. Maxwell

The Qualitative Report

The psychosocial impact of bariatric surgery has not been studied as diligently as the physical impact, particularly within the first 6 months following surgery. The aim of the present study was to explore psychosocial adjustment in UK bariatric candidates within this time-scale. Six female participants were purposively recruited to complete a semi-structured interview, and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse their experiences. Four super-ordinate themes emerged from the interview data which were: (1) "It was me but it wasn’t me": pre-surgery identity, (2) "I don’t see myself as this fat blob of a person anymore": transforming identity, (3) "No …
