Using The Solo Taxonomy To Understand Subgoal Labels Effect In Cs1, Adrienne Decker, Lauren E. Margulieux, Briana B. Morrison Jul 2019

Using The Solo Taxonomy To Understand Subgoal Labels Effect In Cs1, Adrienne Decker, Lauren E. Margulieux, Briana B. Morrison

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This work extends previous research on subgoal labeled instructions by examining their effect across a semester-long, Java-based CS1 course. Across four quizzes, students were asked to explain in plain English the process that they would use to solve a programming problem. In this mixed methods study, we used the SOLO taxonomy to categorize student responses about problem-solving processes and compare students who learned with subgoal labels to those who did not. The use of the SOLO taxonomy classification allows us to look deeper than the mere correctness of answers to focus on the quality of the answers produced in terms …

Human-Cognition-In-The-Loop: A Framework To Include Decision Process In Closed Loop Control, Mehdi Firouznia Jul 2019

Human-Cognition-In-The-Loop: A Framework To Include Decision Process In Closed Loop Control, Mehdi Firouznia

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis proposes a framework to include human cognitive process in making decision into control loop. Our approach in solving this problem is to add a complementary control which includes a model of human decision to the controller, capable of predicting human command accuracy in the near future. The outcome of decision unit can either be presented to the operator as a directive or may adjust the issued command toward better results. In order to construct human decision model, we combined tree approaches of bio-physical connectionist, mathematical abstraction and behavioral cognitive models in the adaptive gain theory framework. We first …

World Accumulation And Planetary Life, Or, Why Capitalism Will Not Survive Until The ‘Last Tree Is Cut, Jason W. Moore Jul 2019

World Accumulation And Planetary Life, Or, Why Capitalism Will Not Survive Until The ‘Last Tree Is Cut, Jason W. Moore

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

How does capitalism work through the web of life? How can we begin to understand capitalism not simply as an economic system of markets and production and a social system of class and culture, but as a way of organising nature? This essay explores a relational, historical, and geographical answer to these questions. Arguing that capitalism is a world-ecology that joins the accumulation of capital, the pursuit of power, and the co-production of webs of life in dialectical unity, Moore offers a way to understand today’s planetary crisis. That crisis marks a turning point not only in the planet’s climate …

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Studies Of Interacting Dipoles In A Zigzag Chain, Niraj Ghimire Jul 2019

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Studies Of Interacting Dipoles In A Zigzag Chain, Niraj Ghimire

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we study the many-body effects of dipoles in a quasi-one-dimensional zigzag optical lattice, which we call the zigzag chain. We study this system using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method, which has established itself as the most powerful numerical method to simulate one-dimensional lattices. For the implementation of DMRG, we have used the open-source package Intelligent Tensor, or simply ITensor. The first part of this research focuses on dipoles polarized in the plane of the zigzag chain by an external electric field with the condition that the dipoles can hop around and interact with their first …

Over 95% of pancreatic adenocarcinomas (PDACs), as well as a large fraction of other tumor types, such as colorectal adenocarcinoma, are driven by KRAS activation. However, no direct RAS inhibitors exist for cancer therapy. Furthermore, the delivery of therapeutic agents of any kind to PDAC in particular has been hindered by the extensive desmoplasia and resultant drug delivery challenges that accompanies these tumors. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is a promising modality for anti-neoplastic therapy due to its precision and wide range of potential therapeutic targets. Unfortunately, siRNA therapy is limited by low serum half-life, vulnerability to intracellular digestion, and transient …

Finding Novel Therapeutics For Blood Cancer Chemotherapy And Immunotherapy, Jin Li

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis focuses on identification and development of novel small molecule therapeutics for blood cancer. The studies presented herein examine two classes of novel compounds with different mechanisms: tropolones as chemotherapies (Chapters II and III) and phosphoantigens as immunotherapies (Chapters IV-VII).

A library of α-tropolone derivatives was tested for anti-proliferative effects on a panel of hematological malignancies demonstrating preference towards cells of T cell lineage. Through investigating different compounds, some structure activity relationships for compound potency were determined. As a class, the mechanism of action was reliant upon the caspase pathway, p53 regulation, Akt, mTor, and iron. The α-substituted tropolones …

Preparation Of Chitosan-Polyethylene Oxide-Colocasia Esculenta Flour Nanofibers Using Electrospinning Method, Riesca Ayu Kusuma Wardhani, Lia Asri, Muhamad Nasir, Bambang Sunendar Purwasasmita

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Nanofibers have been prepared from the mixture of chitosan, polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Colocasia esculenta flour (CE flour) by using the electrospinning method. Two different nanofibers were formulated, containing chitosan-PEO and chitosan-PEO-CE flour. The higher concentration of PEO (3%chitosan-6%PEO) (w/v) resulted in more uniform chitosan-PEO electrospun nanofibers without beads. Chitosan-PEO-CE flour was prepared by addition of colloidal CE flour into the solution containing 3%chitosan-6%PEO with variation of the CE flour concentration of 5, 15 and 25% (w/v). Scanning Electron Microscopy demonstrated that the average diameter of chitosan-PEO nanofibers was 128±41 nm, whereas the diameter of chitosan-PEO-CE flour nanofibers was 159±45 …

Validation Of A Method For Measuring Hydraulic Conductivity In Gravel-Bed Rivers Using Minipiezometers., Kushal Regmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Describing surface-groundwater flow interactions along rivers requires a good understanding of Ksat, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the streambed. However, its spatial variability is huge, so that measurements are needed at multiple locations and depths. Because of this, most methods for in-situ estimation ofKsatare either too expensive or time-consuming to capture the detailed behavior ofKsatover a reach in an affordable manner.Current research on the hyporheic zone and surface water - groundwater interactions makes extensive use of PVC minipiezometers as an inexpensive method to sample piezometric levels, water quality, organisms, etc. As a result, it has become popular to also use …

The Visual Mechanisms Of Seeing In Experiencing The Interior, Maria M. C. Sengke, Triandriani Mustikawati

Interiority

This paper discusses the visual mechanisms of seeing and their significance in experiencing an interior space. The discussion investigates what the observers can obtain from seeing activities. The aim is to emphasise on the role of seeing as a way of constructing the relation between human and the interior environment. The paper explores the mechanisms of seeing by focusing on two different ways, which are seeing in a static position from a point of observation, and seeing while moving through a path of observation. The exploration in a hospital setting finds out that seeing from a point of observation gave …

Book Review: The Seduction Of Curves By Allan Mcrobie, Hans J. Rindisbacher

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This review emphasizes, as does the compelling and beautiful book, The Seduction of Curves by Allan McRobie, the “lines of beauty” that link art and mathematics. McRobie and his collaborator on the indispensable visuals of the volume, Helena Weightman, succeed admirably in connecting theoretically and visually the mathematical field of singularity or catastrophe theory and its graphical representations on the one hand and the seemingly intersecting lines around the volumes of the human body in the artistic representation of the nude. This book thus constitutes a creative and illuminating overlap of mathematics and art that lets the practitioners on both …

Differential Equations Of Love And Love Of Differential Equations, Isaac Elishakoff Jul 2019

Differential Equations Of Love And Love Of Differential Equations, Isaac Elishakoff

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this paper, simple ordinary differential equations are discussed against the background of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In addition, a version of this relationship in a somewhat opposite setting is considered. It is proposed that engineering mathematics courses include this topic in order to promote additional interest in differential equations. In the final section it is shown that vibration of a single-degree-of-freedom mechanical system can be cast as a love-hate relationship between its displacement and velocity, and dynamic instability identified as a transition from trigonometric love to hyperbolic.

Engaging Crisis: Immersive, Interdisciplinary Learning In Mathematics And Rhetoric, Meredith L. Greer, Stephanie Kelley-Romano

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This paper describes an interdisciplinary activity that crosses over between Mathematics and Rhetoric. The professors who created this activity both sought active-learning opportunities for their students, a sense of realism--even urgency--in what can otherwise be perceived as abstract material, and a meaningful liberal arts experience. Evidence of the power of this experience is seen in the media coverage, both from our college and from the Portland Press Herald newspaper. Both courses described in this paper are at the elective level, taken by majors or minors in their respective disciplines. Students have moderate to extensive backgrounds in their subject areas. However, …

Combating Tuberculosis: Using Time-Dependent Sensitivity Analysis To Develop Strategies For Treatment And Prevention, Kendall B. Clark, Mayleen Cortez, Cristian Hernandez, Beth E. Thomas, Allison L. Lewis

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Although many organizations throughout the world have worked tirelessly to control tuberculosis (TB) epidemics, no country has yet been able to eradicate the disease completely. We present two compartmental models representing the spread of a TB epidemic through a population. The first is a general TB model; the second is an adaptation for regions in which HIV is prevalent, accounting for the effects of TB/HIV co-infection. Using active subspaces, we conduct time-dependent sensitivity analysis on both models to explore the significance of certain parameters with respect to the spread of TB. We use the results of this sensitivity analysis to …

Toward A Theory Of Ethical Mindedness: Moral Psychology And The Evolution Of Human Nature, Jordan B. Ainsley Jul 2019

Toward A Theory Of Ethical Mindedness: Moral Psychology And The Evolution Of Human Nature, Jordan B. Ainsley

Open Access Dissertations

The current dissertation is an examination of research and theoretical frameworks for explaining ethical mindedness, or the human propensity to be concerned with morality and ethics. Despite a pervasive belief that morality is central to what it means to be human, the idea of ethical mindedness as a basic feature of human nature is often assumed but not fully explained by the extant research and theory. Given evidence that such a shared quality exists, it is concerning that we appear to lack of a cogent, systematic explanation for a basic feature of human nature. The research questions guiding this dissertation …

There are many types of skin cancer prevalent in the world today. The three most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma (Watson et al, 2015). In the words of Hawryluk & Tsao (2014), “Melanoma is an aggressive malignancy borne of melanocytes, the pigment-generating cells of the skin”. Melanoma is known to cause the most deaths of the three main skin cancers and has many risk factors. The personal risk factors include, “family history, multiple moles, fair skin, blue eyes, red hair, and freckles” (Watson et al, p.e92, 2015). There are risk factors …
