Notophthalmus viridescens (Red-spotted Newt) possess amazing capabilities to regenerate their organs and other tissues. Previously, using a de novo assembly of the newt transcriptome combined with proteomic validation, our group identified a novel family of five protein members expressed in adult tissues during regeneration in Notophthalmus viridescens. The presence of a putative signal peptide suggests that all these proteins are secretory in nature. Here we employed iterative threading assembly refinement (I-TASSER) server to generate three-dimensional structure of these novel Newt proteins and predicted their function. Our data suggests that these proteins could act as ion transporters, and be involved …

Herbaceous perennial species may exhibit winter or summer dormancy, or they may be spring ephemerals with dormancy extending from summer through winter. Herbaceous perennials, and spring ephemerals in particular, are most common in strongly seasonal but relatively mesic temperate environments. Warm deserts are typically dominated by shrubs and annuals that are better adapted to withstand or avoid severe summer heat. Astragalus holmgreniorum Barneby (Fabaceae) is a perennial spring ephemeral that has a restricted distribution at the northeastern edge of the Mojave Desert. We explored factors that regulate its phenological development in an observational study at 2 sites over 2 growing …

Automated Small-Scale Plant Imaging System, Sylvia Tan, James J. Potter
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
For research laboratories, the use of commercial plant phenotyping systems is costly and often do not meet the requirements of the research project. As such, a small-scale plant imaging systems was developed for a biology research group at Washington University in St. Louis. A previous iteration of the device had been prototyped; however, several design requirements were not met, or were not mechanically efficient. Therefore, this paper proposes a second design consisting of a new bridge, trolley and canopy that can be transported easily by the user, and can be made with commercially available parts.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is characterized by hallmark features of gaze avoidance, reduced social approach, and social anxiety. The development of therapeutics to manage these symptoms has been hindered, in part, by the lack of sensitive outcome measures. This study investigated the utility of a novel eye tracking paradigm for indexing social avoidance-related phenotypes. Adolescent/young adult-aged males with FXS (n=24) and typical development (n=23) participated in the study. Participants viewed faces displaying direct or averted gaze and the first fixation duration on the eyes was recorded as an index of initial stimulus registration. Fixation durations did …

Neuropilin-1 (NRP1) is an essential transmembrane receptor with a variety of cellular functions. Here, we identify two human NRP1 splice variants resulting from the skipping of exon 4 and 5, respectively, in colorectal cancer (CRC). Both NRP1 variants exhibit increased endocytosis/recycling activity and decreased levels of degradation, leading to accumulation on endosomes. This increased endocytic trafficking of the two NRP1 variants, upon HGF stimulation, is due to loss of N-glycosylation at the Asn150 or Asn261 site, respectively. Moreover, these NRP1 variants enhance interactions with the Met and β1-integrin receptors, resulting in Met/β1-integrin co-internalization and co-accumulation on endosomes. This provides persistent …

Aesthetics Of Food: The Role Of Visual Framing Strategies For Influence Building On Instagram, Shuhan Yang
Theses
This thesis employs quantitative content analysis to investigate how social media influencers use aesthetic image design to engage followers. The study investigates the ten most-followed food influencers on Instagram in the United States. The study looks at the effectiveness of visual framing strategies, focusing on the images (N = 120) of influencers which have received more than 10,000 likes in 2017. Results show that food influencers prefer to post images about cooked food, without any decorations, using high contrast colors and close-up shots. Raw food images were found to be associated with cluttered composition and far away shoots, whereas cooked …

First Reported Case Of Diphallia In Corynorhinus Townsendii, Nathan W. Fuller, Catherine G. Haase, Kirk A. Silas, Sarah H. Olson, Liam P. Mcguire
Western North American Naturalist
We describe the first reported case of diphallia in a bat, Corynorhinus townsendii, captured during fall swarming at a hibernaculum in northern Utah, USA. Upon examination, we determined that one phallus was functional, as evidenced by production of urine, while the secondary phallus appeared to be overgrown with skin. A review of the medical literature relevant to diphallia suggests that this is a case of pseudodiphallia with a bifid shaft. We hypothesize that this morphological deformity likely has a low impact on the survival of this individual but may act as a physical barrier to copulation. To our knowledge, this …

Modern humans have more fragile skeletons than other hominins, which may result from physical inactivity. Here, we test whether reproductive effort also compromises bone strength, by measuring using computed tomography thoracic vertebral bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture prevalence among physically active Tsimane forager-horticulturalists. Earlier onset of reproduction and shorter interbirth intervals are associated with reduced BMD for women. Tsimane BMD is lower versus Americans, but only for women, contrary to simple predictions relying on inactivity to explain skeletal fragility. Minimal BMD differences exist between Tsimane and American men, suggesting that systemic factors other than fertility (e.g. diet) do not …
A(Meme)Rican Politics: Gender Representation In Political Memes Of The 2016 Election, Taylor C. Lincoln
A(Meme)Rican Politics: Gender Representation In Political Memes Of The 2016 Election, Taylor C. Lincoln
Theses
Utilizing the lens of feminist theory, this research examines gender representation in the political memes of the 2016 Presidential election in the United States. Using a mixed-methods approach, I first examine the use of the #election2016 on Twitter (N = 2,108) through a network analysis to understand the driving actors of discourse surrounding the election. A textual analysis was used to examine the views and opinions through the vocabulary and terms utilized within that network. Finally, a content analysis was conducted to interpret the latent messages and representations of gender within the memes (n = 100). Results show that political …
Pulsed Photonic Sintering Of Lithium Doped Potassium Sodium Niobate (Knn) For Flexible Energy Harvesting Devices, Sara Hernandez Juarez
Pulsed Photonic Sintering Of Lithium Doped Potassium Sodium Niobate (Knn) For Flexible Energy Harvesting Devices, Sara Hernandez Juarez
Theses
In this work, KNNL was sintered as a lead-free alternative to PZT using a pulsed photonic sintering method. The KNNL post-sintering composition remained close to theoretical composition indicating minimal volatilization of alkali metals. Furthermore, a remnant polarization was observed in the processed material. Energy and time demands were greatly reduced using the pulsed photonic sintering method versus conventional furnace sintering.
Piezoelectric materials can produce electric current when bent or compressed. Currently lead zirconium titanate (PZT) is the most widely used piezoelectric material. A promising lead-free alternative is sodium potassium niobate (KNN), which can be doped with lithium (KNNL) to improve …
Emergent Behavior Development And Control In Multi-Agent Systems, David W. King
Emergent Behavior Development And Control In Multi-Agent Systems, David W. King
Theses and Dissertations
Emergence in natural systems is the development of complex behaviors that result from the aggregation of simple agent-to-agent and agent-to-environment interactions. Emergence research intersects with many disciplines such as physics, biology, and ecology and provides a theoretical framework for investigating how order appears to spontaneously arise in complex adaptive systems. In biological systems, emergent behaviors allow simple agents to collectively accomplish multiple tasks in highly dynamic environments; ensuring system survival. These systems all display similar properties: self-organized hierarchies, robustness, adaptability, and decentralized task execution. However, current algorithmic approaches merely present theoretical models without showing how these models actually create hierarchical, …
The Relationship Between Undergraduate Research Training Programs And Motivational Resources For Underrepresented Minority Students In Stem: Program Participation, Self-Efficacy, A Sense Of Belonging, And Academic Performance, Jennifer Lindwall
Dissertations and Theses
Although calls for a more diverse workforce in biomedical fields have been widespread, racial and ethnic gaps in biomedical degree attainment persist. In order to succeed, URM STEM students must persevere despite numerous challenges and stay continuously motivated on the long road to degree attainment in biomedical disciplines. Past higher education research has identified two key self-appraisals, a sense of belonging and self-efficacy, as crucial for student success. These beliefs, which can serve as motivational resources for students, include students' convictions about whether they are a valued member of their academic community and whether they have what it takes to …

Developing Drug Therapies: Cognitive Damage In Mice Following Brain Radiation, Rachel Yuska
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Pediatric brain cancer patients are at a high risk for radiation-induced cognitive impairment due to white matter changes in the brain. Half of six-month radiotherapy survivors develop significant changes in white matter. Previous research has shown that a mouse model can be used to show similar cognitive and behavioral deficits in human patients. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of two drug therapies, Donepezil and 3,3-Diindolylmethane (DIM), that could be used to either protect the brain from radiation injury or cure the cognitive injury and behavioral deficits that result from whole-brain irradiation. This project consisted of …
Fracture Networks On Mars: Preservation Of Surface And Subsurface Environments At Mawrth Vallis, Phoebe Kinzelman
Fracture Networks On Mars: Preservation Of Surface And Subsurface Environments At Mawrth Vallis, Phoebe Kinzelman
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Mawrth Vallis is an outflow channel on Mars that cuts through some of the planet’s most ancient terrains, which contain many different types of fractures. The ExoMars rover mission will search for biosignatures on Mars, and this site was proposed as one of the two final candidate landing sites for the rover. A biosignature is any object that shows evidence of past or present life. Fracture networks are a high priority for the mission because they might contain minerals precipitated by fluid interaction, and these minerals could trap and preserve biosignatures, critical for our understanding of ancient processes. In this …
Mandarin Localizers: Their Grammatical Category And Syntactic Distribution, Xuan Hu
Mandarin Localizers: Their Grammatical Category And Syntactic Distribution, Xuan Hu
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
If you say “the ball is on/to the right of the chair,” how many spatial configurations between the chair and the ball can you think of? Is there contact between the ball and the chair? If not, how far is the ball away from the chair? If you use another perspective, is the ball still on the right?
Spatial configurations in Mandarin are expressed via elements called localizers, and ambiguities are a natural part of these expressions. This essay proposes that those ambiguities result from different underlying syntactic structures. I argue that the complex morphemic structure of localizers can yield …

Nanomaterial-Agrichemical Interactions: Association Of Environmental Herbicides With Two-Dimensional Graphene Nanoplatelets, Nudar A. Bhuiya
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Atrazine and glyphosate are the two most common agricultural herbicides used in the United States. Both herbicides can move in the environment, which results in contamination of drinking water sources. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are an emerging nanoparticle with potential uses for the remediation of environmental contamination. The first aim of this study was to determine binding interactions between atrazine and GNPs to mimic a mixture composition. To determine binding interactions, GNPs with different functional groups (none, carboxylated, or aminylated) were evaluated. GNPs at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, or 3 mg/ml were incubated with atrazine at 3 ppb (μg/L) …

This paper introduces a variant of entropy measures based on vertex eccentricity and applies it to all graphs representing the isomers of octane. Taking into account the vertex degree as well (degree-ecc-entropy), we find a good correlation with the acentric factor of octane isomers. In particular, we compute the degree-ecc-entropy for three classes of dendrimer graphs.

Turning Gender Inside-Out: Delivering Higher Education In Women’S Carceral Spaces, Giulia Federica Zampini, Linnéa Anna Margareta Österman, Camille May Stengel, Morwenna Bennallick
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This article is a critical reflection of the role of gender in the delivery of a higher education course based on the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Programme. Related concepts such as hegemonic masculinity, heteronormativity, and intersectionality are discussed within the prison education setting. This reflection primarily draws on critical incidents from the experiences of the first three authors facilitating a higher education course in a women’s prison in England. One major reflection is that learning in a group of ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ students, all self-identified women, who vary along the dimensions of age, class, ethnicity, nationality and sexual expression, presented unique …
Hydrocarbon Concentration Data Collected During A Coastal Survey Conducted In The Bay Of Campeche, Southern Gulf Of Mexico On 2016-08-09, Isabel Romero
C-IMAGE data
On 2016 a coastal survey was conducted in the Bay of Campeche (Mexico) to search for remnants of the Ixtoc-1 spill. This spill occurred on June 3 of 1979 releasing about 3 million barrels of oil during 9.75 months. In the aftermath of the spill (1979-1980), a survey conducted by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi indicated oil reached and impacted several areas, including mangroves, reefs and rocky beaches. Previous visual surveys and observations from locals confirmed the coastal areas were not impacted by oil before the Ixtoc-1 spill. In 2016, C-IMAGE II researchers conducted a similar survey with the additional goal …

Gene-annotation enrichment is a common method for utilizing ontology-based annotations in gene and gene-product centric knowledgebases. Effective utilization of these annotations requires inferring semantic linkages by tracing paths through edges in the ontological graph, referred to as relations. However, some relations are semantically problematic with respect to scope, necessitating their omission or modification lest erroneous term mappings occur. To address these issues, we created the Gene Ontology Categorization Suite, or GOcats—a novel tool that organizes the Gene Ontology into subgraphs representing user-defined concepts, while ensuring that all appropriate relations are congruent with respect to scoping semantics. Here, we demonstrate the …
