Growth And Mortality Of Barnacle Chthalamus Fissus In The Context Of Climate Change, Elizabeth Bushnell, Nathalie Reyns Aug 2019

Growth And Mortality Of Barnacle Chthalamus Fissus In The Context Of Climate Change, Elizabeth Bushnell, Nathalie Reyns

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

This research examines the impact of temperature increase due to anthropogenic climate change on California barnacle species, Chthalamus fissus. Given the prominence of the species in southern California, impacts to the species could translate to environmental impacts to intertidal ecosystems. We tested the hypothesis that different temperatures will have an effect on mortality and growth. To evaluate the effect of temperature on Chthalamus fissus, we cultivated barnacles in the lab for 8 weeks at average temperatures of 14°C, 22 °C and 28°C. Daily mortality and weekly growth of the barnacles was tracked. Results show increased mortality with elevated temperature. Results …

Characterization Of Cultivatable Arsenic Resistant Bacteria From Black Mountain Open Space Park, Elena Bettale, Gabriella Dorrell Aug 2019

Characterization Of Cultivatable Arsenic Resistant Bacteria From Black Mountain Open Space Park, Elena Bettale, Gabriella Dorrell

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Arsenic is a ubiquitous naturally occurring element. This metalloid is highly toxic and its dispersal in the environment represents an increasing threat to the organisms living in it. Arsenic-resistant bacteria have developed strategies to resist to the stress of this metal. Arsenic-rich soils were detected in San Diego County at the Black Mountain Open Space Park. This study focuses on the characterization of the cultivable bacteria presenting As resistance properties at this site. It is hypothesized that extreme exposure to an arsenic-rich environment has contributed to the evolution of species that possess favorable traits towards As resistance. Our findings show …

Defensive Morphologies Of The Barnacle Chthamalus Fissus, Brendan Qiu Aug 2019

Defensive Morphologies Of The Barnacle Chthamalus Fissus, Brendan Qiu

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

The predator-prey relationship is an important fuel for evolution. Over time, prey develop adaptations that help protect them from predators and predators develop adaptations and strategies that help them capture prey more efficiently, and this continuous cycle results in the eventual evolution of all species involved. This cycle is evident in the relationship between the predatory snail Mexacanthina lugubris lugubris and its barnacle prey Chthamalus fissus. We examined when C. fissus develop adaptive defensive morphologies (narrow operculums) during early juvenile development and the effects of early exposures of their main predator M. lugubris on barnacle survival. We performed an intertidal …

Optimal Control Of Coefficients In Parabolic Free Boundary Problems Modeling Laser Ablation, Ugur Abdulla, Jonathan Goldfarb, Ali Hagverdiyev Aug 2019

Optimal Control Of Coefficients In Parabolic Free Boundary Problems Modeling Laser Ablation, Ugur Abdulla, Jonathan Goldfarb, Ali Hagverdiyev

39th Southeastern-Atlantic Regional Conference on Differential Equations (SEARCDE)

Optimal control of coefficients in the free boundary problem for the second order parabolic PDE modeling biomedical engineering problem on the laser ablation of biological tissues is analyzed. Optimal control in Hilbert-Besov spaces framework is employed where coefficient of the PDE and free boundary are components of the control vector and optimality criteria are based on the final moment measurement of the temperature and position of the free boundary. Discretization by finite differences is pursued, and convergence of the discrete optimal control problems to the original problem is proved. Gradient descent algorithm based on Frechet differentiability in Hilbert-Besov spaces complemented …

Generalized Monotone Iterative Techniques For Caputo Fractional Ivp With An Application To Biological Models, Diego Ramirez Aug 2019

Generalized Monotone Iterative Techniques For Caputo Fractional Ivp With An Application To Biological Models, Diego Ramirez

39th Southeastern-Atlantic Regional Conference on Differential Equations (SEARCDE)

We will begin this presentation with the definition and important properties of the Caputo fractional derivative. Next, we describe the main problem and define two different sets of coupled lower and upper solutions of a Caputo fractional differential equation with initial condition of order q, 0 < q < 1. The forcing function is the sum of an increasing function and a decreasing, which is common in classical applications such as the logistic model. Then, we develop two monotone iterative techniques, one corresponding to each set of lower and up- per solutions, which consist of sequences that converge uniformly and monotonically to minimal and maximal solutions of the IVP. Finally, we present an application example that illustrates our results.

Heterotrophic protists play pivotal roles in aquatic ecosystems by transferring matter and energy, including lipids, from primary producers to higher trophic predators. Using Oxyrrhis marina as a model organism, changes to the non-saponifiable protist lipids were investigated under satiation and starvation conditions. During active feeding on the alga Cryptomonas sp., the O. marina hexane soluble non-saponifiable fraction lipid profile reflected its food source with the observed presence of long chain mono-unsaturated fatty alcohols up to C25:1. Evidence of trophic upgrading in O. marina was observed with long chain mono-unsaturated fatty alcohol accumulation of up to C35:1. To the best of …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Bos indicus females have more surface antral follicles than Bos taurus females; however, histological studies demonstrated no difference in total number of primordial follicles between these two biological types of cattle. Primordial follicle density in the ovary was less in Nelore ovaries compared to Angus ovaries, but no studies have examined the primordial follicle density in Bos indicus cross-bred females. It, therefore, was hypothesized that primordial follicle density in the ovary would decrease as percentage Bos indicus increased. Ovaries were collected from cross-bred Angus (n=32, no Bos indicus influence), Brangus (n=15), or Brahman (n=9) …

Transcriptome Profiling Of Brain Myeloid Cells Revealed Activation Of Itgal, Trem1, And Spp1 In Western Diet-Induced Obesity., Hongtian Yang, Leah C. Graham, Alaina M Reagan, Weronika Grabowska, William H. Schott, Gareth R Howell

Faculty Research 2019

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors are critical in the development of age-related cognitive decline and dementia. A western diet (WD) can cause nutrient deficiency and inflammation that could impact cognition directly. It is increasingly recognized that innate immune responses by brain myeloid cells, such as resident microglia, and infiltrating peripheral monocytes/macrophages may represent an essential link between a WD, cognitive decline, and dementia. Our previous data demonstrated that chronic consumption of a WD induced inflammation through brain myeloid cells in aging mice and a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the subtypes of myeloid cells that contribute to the WD-induced inflammation …

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system with prominent neurodegenerative components. The triggering and progression of MS is associated with transcriptional and epigenetic alterations in several tissues, including peripheral blood. The combined influence of transcriptional and epigenetic changes associated with MS has not been assessed in the same individuals. Here we generated paired transcriptomic (RNA-seq) and DNA methylation (Illumina 450 K array) profiles of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells (CD4, CD8), using clinically accessible blood from healthy donors and MS patients in the initial relapsing-remitting and subsequent secondary-progressive stage. By integrating the output of a …

Assessing Diagenetic Conditions In The Late Triassic Chinle Formation Through Petrographic And Geochemical Analysis Of Phytosaur Teeth, John Fortner Aug 2019

Assessing Diagenetic Conditions In The Late Triassic Chinle Formation Through Petrographic And Geochemical Analysis Of Phytosaur Teeth, John Fortner

Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The Upper Triassic (Norian; ~227-208 Ma) Chinle Formation of Petrified Forest (PeFo) National Park was deposited during a time of major tectonic breakup and profound changes in atmospheric circulation and faunal compositions. Little has been done however to assess whether surficial paleoenvironmental trends related to deterioration of the Late Triassic Megamonsoon resulted in similar trends in the early diagenetic environment. Here, we use phytosaur tooth dentin as a proxy for diagenetic conditions in the Chinle of PEFO, as its greater susceptibility to chemical alteration relative to enamel makes it an excellent substrate from which changing diagenetic conditions may be studied …

Human Polyomavirus Jcpyv And Its Role In Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy And Oncogenesis, Luis Del Valle, Sergio Piña-Oviedo

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The human neurotropic virus JCPyV, a member of the family, is the opportunistic infectious agent of Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a fatal disease seen in severe immunosuppressive conditions and, during the last decade, in patients undergoing immunotherapy. JCPyV is a ubiquitous pathogen with up to 85% of the adult population word-wide exhibiting antibodies against it. Early experiments demonstrated that direct inoculation of JCPyV into the brain of different species resulted in the development of brain tumors and other neuroectodermal-derived neoplasias. Later, several reports showed the detection of viral sequences in medulloblastomas and glial tumors, as well as expression of the …
