Forty male C57BL/6 mice aged 4 weeks were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups. Mice in control groups drank normal water, while those in the experimental groups were treated 1.0% α-ketoglutarate acid (group Ⅰ), or 1.8% leucine (group Ⅱ), or 1.8% leucine and 1.0% α-ketoglutarate acid (group Ⅲ) via drinking water. The experimental lasted 35 days. The results showed as follows: ① The growth performance of group Ⅲ was 8.7%, 10.1%, and 10.4% lower than that of the groups control,ⅠandⅡ, respectively; ② Serum albumin in group Ⅲ was significantly higher than that of the groups control,ⅠandⅡ(P<0.05); ③ The cardiac index of group Ⅲ increased by 19.3%, 13.6%, and 15.2%, respectively, compared with groups control,ⅠandⅡ; ④ The abdominal fat index of group Ⅲ was 24.1%, 10.0%, and 6.7% lower than that of groups control,ⅠandⅡ, the cross-sectional area of the gastrocnemius muscle of group Ⅲ was 46.9%, 20.2%, 27.9% higher than that of groups control,ⅠandⅡ, respectively. In summary, the combination of leucine and α-ketoglutaric acid can reduce the body weight of mice, strengthen the use of fat by organs, and increase the cross-sectional area of gastrocnemius muscle fibers.
Organic/Inorganic Interfacial Interactions Affecting Metal Reactivity: Water Treatment And Sensor Applications, Mohamed Nabil Shaikh
Organic/Inorganic Interfacial Interactions Affecting Metal Reactivity: Water Treatment And Sensor Applications, Mohamed Nabil Shaikh
Civil Engineering ETDs
The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the interactions occurring at the organic – inorganic interface between solid media and aqueous contaminants for water treatment and sensor applications. The gaps in current literature on these interfacial organic-inorganic interactions must be bridged in order to develop advanced water treatment and monitoring technologies for improving water quality and thus, restore and protect the contaminated water resources. As a part of this dissertation, manganese oxides-based composites and electrospun polymer mats were developed and investigated for gaining mechanistic insights of organic (bisphenol A and acetaminophen) and inorganic (uranium) contaminants removal, respectively. These reactions …

Background: Thecaphora frezii Carranza and Lindquist causes smut disease in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) resulting in up to 35% yield losses. Fungicides have shown ineffective in controlling the disease; whereas research on the molecular basis of that fungicide resistance has been hindered because of the lack of genetic information about T. frezii. The goal of this work was to provide molecular information about fungicide-target loci in T. frezii, including its mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) and critical nuclear-encoded genes.
Results: Here we report the complete annotated mitogenome of T. frezii, a 123,773 bp molecule containing the standard 14 genes that form part …
Plant-Soil Feedbacks Predict Native But Not Non-Native Plant Community Composition: A 7-Year Common-Garden Experiment, Andrew Kulmatiski
Plant-Soil Feedbacks Predict Native But Not Non-Native Plant Community Composition: A 7-Year Common-Garden Experiment, Andrew Kulmatiski
Ecology Center Publications
Plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) have gained attention as a potential mechanism of plant growth and coexistence, however, because they are typically measured using plant monocultures in greenhouse conditions, the link between PSFs and plant growth in field communities remains poorly tested. Here, PSFs for six native and four non-native species were measured in a 7-year, common-garden experiment. A plant community growth model was then parameterized either with PSF data (PSF model) or without PSF data (Null model). PSF and Null model predictions were compared to plant ground cover in experimental and natural communities. For eight of 10 species, plant cover at …

Neoantigens are newly formed peptides created from somatic mutations that are capable of inducing tumor-specific T cell recognition. Recently, researchers and clinicians have leveraged next generation sequencing technologies to identify neoantigens and to create personalized immunotherapies for cancer treatment. To create a personalized cancer vaccine, neoantigens must be computationally predicted from matched tumor-normal sequencing data, and then ranked according to their predicted capability in stimulating a T cell response. This candidate neoantigen prediction process involves multiple steps, including somatic mutation identification, HLA typing, peptide processing, and peptide-MHC binding prediction. The general workflow has been utilized for many preclinical and clinical …

Public Private Partnership Of Waste Management In West Java, Ray Ferza, Moh Ilham A Hamudy, M Saidi Rifki
BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
Despite the prominent reputation of West Java amongst Indonesian local government at the national level, waste management situation has remained not optimal. Fatal waste disasters in the form of landslides have occurred in this province. As a response, the Provincial Government of West Java created several regional policies for waste management. One area affected by policy implementation is the region of Nambo. This policy involved a cooperation scheme between the local government and a private entity public-private partnership (PPP) to establish the Nambo Final Waste Treatment and Processing Facility (known locally as TPPAS). This study seeks to examine and analyze …

The Relationship Between Recurrent Placental Pathology And Recurrent Poor Pregnancy Outcome, Cara Krulewitch
The Relationship Between Recurrent Placental Pathology And Recurrent Poor Pregnancy Outcome, Cara Krulewitch
Dissertations
Poor pregnancy outcome (PPO) is a top agenda item in health and political arenas. Most prominent PPOs are low birth weight (LBW) and preterm delivery (PTD). Effective interventions to maximize pregnancy outcome will diminish their negative impact. The placenta is a diary of the infant's prenatal experiences. Changes in the placenta provide clues to the uterine environment during the pregnancy. Each placental pathology represents a different insult, including severity, duration and type. The Collaborative Perinatal Project of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke was a longitudinal study of obstetric outcomes in women. The study was conducted …

Effects Of Obesity And Fall Risk On Gait And Posture Of Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Thurmon E. Lockhart, Christopher W. Frames, Rahul Soangra, Abraham Lieberman
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Epidemiological studies link increased fall risk to obesity in older adults, but the mechanism through which obesity increases falls and fall risks is unknown. This study investigates if obesity (Body Mass Index: BMI>30 kg/m2) influenced gait and standing postural characteristics of community dwelling older adults leading to increased risk of falls. One hundred healthy older adults (age 74.0±7.6 years, range of 56-90 years) living independently in a community participated in this study. Participants’ history of falls over the previous two years was recorded, with emphasis on frequency and characteristics of falls. Participants with at least two falls in the …

Due to absence of transgenic approaches in Notopthalmus Viridescens (newt), and conservation of genetic machinery across species, we generated transgenic Drosophila melanogaster to misexpress unique genes from newt. Novel newt genes cloned, and inserted at attP site in Drosophila were misexpressed ubiquitously using tubulin Gal-4. Sample (total RNA) for RNA sequencing was collected at 3rd instar larval stage during which major developmental events takes place in Drosophila. Total RNA was extracted, and purified using RNA clean and ConcentratorTM. RNA quality was quantitated by calculating absorbance at 260 nm (A260) and 280 nm (A280) wavelengths using Nanodrop 2000 spectrophotometer. Good quality …

Observations On Habitat Use Of Age-0 Rio Grande Blue Sucker (Cycleptus Sp. Cf. Elongatus), Stephanie D. George, Amanda K. Pinion, Kevin W. Conway, Thomas C. Heard, Joshuah S. Perkin
Western North American Naturalist
During April 2018, we collected 23 age-0 (33–55 mm total length) Rio Grande Blue Sucker (Cycleptus sp. cf. elongatus) from 3 locations in the Rio Grande near the confluence with the Rio Conchos where the species is rarely reported. Age-0 Rio Grande Blue Suckers occurred in habitats ranging from 6 to 81 cm deep, with current velocities ranging from 0 to 1.03 m/s over silt, sand, gravel, cobble, and bedrock substrates. There was limited evidence for greater detection in slower-velocity habitats with bedrock, silt, and sand substrates, but the habitats we sampled were not unique from habitats sampled …
The Effects Of Shareholder Primacy, Publicness, And “Privateness” On Corporate Cultures, Donald C. Langevoort
The Effects Of Shareholder Primacy, Publicness, And “Privateness” On Corporate Cultures, Donald C. Langevoort
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
There is widespread belief in both scholarship and business practice that internal corporate cultures materially affect economic outcomes for firms. In turn, there is also a growing belief that corporate governance arrangements materially affect corporate cultures. If this is true, it suggests an intriguing three-link causal chain: governance choices influence corporate performance, at least in part via their effects on internal culture. This essay, written for the “Berle XI” symposium, explores that possibility. This subject is important to lawyers and legal scholars because of the symbiotic nature of law and governance, with an increasing risk of enhanced corporate criminal and …

Parthenocarpic Cucumber Cultivar Evaluation In High-Tunnel Production, Wenjing Guan, Elizabeth Maynard, Bronwyn Aly, Julie Zakes, Dan Egel, Laura Ingwell
Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications
Fresh-consumed parthenocarpic cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are a popular and high-value crop sold in local food markets. The parthenocarpic plant characteristics and climbing growth habit make cucumbers an ideal crop for high-tunnel production. Major types of parthenocarpic cucumbers include Beit alpha and mini, Dutch greenhouse, American slicer, and Japanese. Information regarding yield performance, plant growth, and disease resistance of the four types grown in high-tunnel conditions is limited. In this study, 16 parthenocarpic cucumber cultivars from the four major types were evaluated in high tunnels at three locations in Indiana and Illinois during Spring 2018. Plants were pruned to …

Deep Learning-Based Damage Detection From Aerial Sfm Point Clouds, Mohammad Ebrahim Mohammadi, Daniel P. Watson, Richard L. Wood
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Aerial data collection is well known as an efficient method to study the impact following extreme events. While datasets predominately include images for post-disaster remote sensing analyses, images alone cannot provide detailed geometric information due to a lack of depth or the complexity required to extract geometric details. However, geometric and color information can easily be mined from three-dimensional (3D) point clouds. Scene classification is commonly studied within the field of machine learning, where a workflow follows a pipeline operation to compute a series of engineered features for each point and then points are classified based on these features using …

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Indirect Potable Reuse And Direct Potable Reuse: A Southern Nevada Case Study, Sajjad Ahmad, Cory Dow, Krystyna Stave, Daniel Gerrity
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
This case study presents a framework for evaluating the sustainability of indirect potable reuse (IPR) and direct potable reuse (DPR) in Las Vegas, Nevada. A system dynamics model was developed to simulate population growth, water supply, water quality, energy costs, net present worth (NPW), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The model confirmed that DPR could achieve a net reduction in energy costs of up to US$250 million while still ensuring an adequate water supply. However, the high NPW of DPR ($1.0–$4.0 billion) relative to the status quo IPR approach ($0.6 billion) represents a significant economic hurdle, although future monetization of …

The rise of antimicrobial resistance in uropathogens has complicated the management of urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in patients who are afflicted by recurrent episodes of UTIs. Antimicrobial-resistant (AR) uropathogens persistently colonizing individuals at asymptomatic time points have been implicated in the pathophysiology of UTIs. The dynamics of uropathogen persistence following the resolution of symptomatic disease are, however, mostly unclear. To further our understanding, we determined longitudinal AR uropathogen carriage and clonal persistence of uropathogenic

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The ability to differentiate a non-native aquatic plant, Myriophyllum spicatum (Eurasian watermilfoil or EWM), from other submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) using spectral data collected at multiple scales was investigated as a precursor to mapping of EWM. Spectral data were collected using spectroradiometers for SAV taken out of the water, from the side of a boat directly over areas of SAV and from a lightweight portable radiometer system flown from an unmanned aerial system (UAS). EWM was spectrally different from other SAV when using 651 spectral bands collected in ultraviolet to near-infrared range of 350 to 1000 nm but does not …

Transnational Environmental Law's Missing People, Natasha Affolder

Legal scholars rely heavily on vocabularies of ‘actors’, ‘agents’, and ‘experts’ to account for the fact that law does not develop by itself. However, the identities, idiosyncrasies, and individual professional contributions of law’s people are rarely illuminated. This article suggests that the relative absence of people in transnational legal scholarship helps to explain some of its gaps. The task of bringing ‘human actors back on stage’ creates some new opportunities for transnational environmental law scholarship. It invites attention to both dominant and excluded voices. It offers a way of bridging the gap between the bureaucratic language of law and its …
