Residence Time Effects On Molybdenum Adsorption On Soils: Elucidation By Multi-Reaction Modeling And Xanes Analysis, Wenguang Sun, Amitava Roy, H. Magdi Selim
Residence Time Effects On Molybdenum Adsorption On Soils: Elucidation By Multi-Reaction Modeling And Xanes Analysis, Wenguang Sun, Amitava Roy, H. Magdi Selim
Faculty Publications
To investigate the influence of residence time on molybdenum [Mo(VI)] adsorption behavior in soil environments, kinetic batch experiments coupled with X-ray near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy were performed for a neutral-pH soil (Webster loam) and two acidic soils (Mahan sand and Windsor sand) at different time scales (1 day–1 year). Batch-type experiments indicated that retention of Mo(VI) was rate limited and typical biphasic for soils. Initial rapid retention was followed by a continued slow retention with increasing aging time for Mahan and Windsor soils. In contrast, the reaction for Webster soil was nearly complete after 8 h, reflecting difference in soil …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: Cervical cancer is common in Kenyan women. Cofactors in addition to infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) are likely to be important in causing cervical cancer, because only a small percentage of HPV-infected women will develop this malignancy. Kenyan women are exposed to dietary aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen and immunosuppressive agent, which may be such a cofactor.
Methods: Demographics, behavioral data, plasma, and cervical swabs were collected from 88 human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected Kenyan women without cervical dysplasia. Human papillomavirus detection was compared between women with or without plasma aflatoxin B1-lysine (AFB1-lys) and evaluated in relation to AFB1-lys concentration.

Aim: We used genome‐scale sampling to assess the phylogeography of a group of topminnows in the Fundulus notatus species complex. Two of the species have undergone extensive range expansions resulting in broadly overlapping distributions, and sympatry within drainages has provided opportunities for hybridization and introgression. We assessed the timing and pattern of range expansion in the context of late Pleistocene–Holocene drainage events and evaluated the evidence for introgressive hybridization between species.
Location: Central and southern United States including drainages of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain and portions of the Mississippi River drainage in and around the Central …

Information Resources For Animal Control And Wildlife Damage Management, Stephen M. Vantassel, Michael W. Fall, Serge Lariviére
Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series
A bumper sticker reads, “If you think education is expensive, you oughta try ignorance.” That statement could not be truer in regard to wildlife damage management. Being willing to learn is a critical attitude for everyone involved in wildlife damage management. Since wildlife damage management intersects so many other disciplines, no single person can be an expert in all of them. In addition, the arrival of an invasive species, changes in building practices (e.g., egress windows, ridge vents), or the implementation of new regulations can confound traditional practices and require new control methods. Thus, it is important to provide a …

Manual Movement In Sign Languages: One Hand Versus Two In Communicating Shapes, C. Ferrara, Donna Jo Napoli
Linguistics Faculty Works
In sign languages, the task of communicating a shape involves drawing in the air with one moving hand (Method One) or two (Method Two). Since the movement path is iconic, method choice might be based on the shape. In the present studies we aimed to determine whether geometric properties motivate method choice. In a study of 17 deaf signers from six countries, the strongest predictors of method choice were whether the shape has any curved edges (Method One), and whether the shape is symmetrical across the Y‐axis (Method Two), where the default was Method One. In a second study of …

DNA-binding proteins play an important role in cell metabolism. In biological laboratories, the detection methods of DNA-binding proteins includes yeast one-hybrid methods, bacterial singles and X-ray crystallography methods and others, but these methods involve a lot of labor, material and time. In recent years, many computation-based approachs have been proposed to detect DNA-binding proteins. In this paper, a machine learning-based method, which is called the Fuzzy Kernel Ridge Regression model based on Multi-View Sequence Features (FKRR-MVSF), is proposed to identifying DNA-binding proteins. First of all, multi-view sequence features are extracted from protein sequences. Next, a Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) algorithm …

PURPOSE: Poor adherence to dietary/behaviour modifications as interventions for hypercholesterolemia in paediatric patients often necessitates the initiation of statin therapy. The aim of this study was to develop a joint population pharmacokinetic model for simvastatin and four metabolites in children and adolescents to investigate sources of variability in simvastatin acid exposure in this patient population, in addition to SLCO1B1 genotype status.
METHODS: Plasma concentrations of simvastatin and its four metabolites, demographic and polymorphism data for OATP1B1 and CYP3A5 were analysed utilising a population pharmacokinetic modelling approach from an existing single oral dose (10 mg < 17 years and 20 mg ≥ 18 years) pharmacokinetic dataset of 32 children and adolescents.
RESULTS: The population PK model included …

The plant-specific translation initiation complex eIFiso4F is encoded by three genes in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana)—genes encoding the cap binding protein eIFiso4E (eifiso4e) and two isoforms of the large subunit scaffolding protein eIFiso4G (i4g1 and i4g2). To quantitate phenotypic changes, a phenomics platform was used to grow wild-type and mutant plants (i4g1, i4g2, i4e, i4g1 x i4g2, and i4g1 x i4g2 x i4e [i4f]) under various light conditions. Mutants lacking both eIFiso4G isoforms showed the most obvious phenotypic differences from the wild type. Two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry were used to identify changes in protein levels in plants lacking …

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is critical to host-pathogen interactions. Class II MHC is a heterodimer, with α and β subunits encoded by different genes. The peptide-binding groove is formed by the first domain of both subunits (α1 and β1), but studies of class II variation or natural selection focus primarily on the β subunit and II B genes. We explored MHC II A in Leach’s storm-petrel, a seabird with two expressed, polymorphic II B genes. We found two II A genes, Ocle-DAA and Ocle-DBA, in contrast to the single II A gene in chicken and duck. In exon 2 …

Scene recognition is an essential component of both machine and biological vision. Recent advances in computer vision using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated impressive sophistication in scene recognition, through training on large datasets of labeled scene images (Zhou et al. 2018, 2014). One criticism of CNN-based approaches is that performance may not generalize well beyond the training image set (Torralba and Efros 2011), and may be hampered by minor image modifications, which in some cases are barely perceptible to the human eye (Goodfellow et al. 2015; Szegedy et al. 2013). While these “adversarial examples” may be unlikely in …
Identification And Cloning Of Putative Serine Protease Inhibitor (Serpin) Genes In Rice (Oryza Sativa) And A Preliminary Approach To Generate Rnai Using The Cloned Sequences, Santanu De
Biology Faculty Articles
Programmed Cell Death (PCD) is an important mechanism of plant immune response against diseases. Serine protease inhibitors (‘serpins’) are a conserved superfamily of proteins that inhibit serine protease targets and prevent programmed cell death (PCD) in plants, in absence of pathogen infection. In this project, putative serpin genes in rice (Oryza sativa) which are homologous to necrotic/‘Nec’ serpin genes in Drosophila are identified by bioinformatic analyses. This is followed by cloning of specific exon sequences of the rice serpin genes identified. Finally, one of the cloned sequences is utilized in a series of steps to produce interfering RNA …

Nutritional supplementation has long been studied as a possible treatment alternative or as an adjunct to the standard treatments for common ailments and diseases. According to the latest research, the Chilean maqui berry, Aristotelia chilensis, has been shown to reduce postprandial insulin levels by as much as fifty percent. The berry, which has been shown to be as effective as metformin at increasing insulin sensitivity and controlling blood glucose levels, follows a simple mechanism of action that involves the inhibition of sodium dependent glucose transporters in the small intestine, slowing the rate at which sugars enter the bloodstream and thereby …

Inflammation, Depression And Non-Adherence Correlates In Persons On Hemodialysis, Kathleen Fulmer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The hemodialysis patient is at risk for a high inflammatory state as evidenced by the elevation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 which has been linked to lower serotonin levels and development of depression. The biological and psychological stress of living with End Stage Renal Disease on hemodialysis increases the risk for depression which is the leading psychological disorder affecting these patients which is also underdiagnosed and under-treated. The phenomenon of depression can manifest itself in the maladaptive behavior of non-adherence which has been associated with increased mortality, morbidity and decreased quality of life for the hemodialysis patient. The purpose of …

Nearly half of all children in the U.S. have experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) and 23 percent have experienced at least two ACEs. Cumulative exposure to ACEs places children at increased risk for poor psychosocial functioning in childhood and cognitive ability may mediate this relationship. The study aims were to assess the predictive ability of cumulative exposure to ACEs on poor psychosocial functioning and to determine if verbal and non-verbal cognitive ability mediated this association. Parent-child dyads from a low-income pediatric clinic were assessed. Parents were given a parent report measure to assess the child’s psychosocial functioning …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The detention of fathers in penal institutions can challenge their involvement in the lives of their children and this experience can impact these relationships as well as the socio-emotional development of their children in the short and long term. Upon release, the reintegration experiences can be difficult, clumsy, and sometimes lost altogether. This present study explored the experiences of nineteen fathers as they sought to reconnect with their children after incarceration. Through the use of grounded theory and qualitative interviews, three major themes emerged from the data, which provided an explanation of participants’ reintegration experiences. These themes were participants’ ideology …

Functional responses describe how changing resource availability affects consumer resource use, thus providing a mechanistic approach to prediction of the invasibility and potential damage of invasive alien species (IAS). However, functional responses can be context dependent, varying with resource characteristics and availability, consumer attributes, and environmental variables. Identifying context dependencies can allow invasion and damage risk to be predicted across different ecoregions. Understanding how ecological factors shape the functional response in agro-ecosystems can improve predictions of hotspots of highest impact and inform strategies to mitigate damage across locations with varying crop types and availability. We linked heterogeneous movement data across …

Past plastic management practices have resulted in pollution. An improved management scenario may involve adding used bioplastic to anaerobic digesters to increase methane for renewable energy. In this work, effects of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) bioplastic anaerobic co-digestion with synthetic primary sludge on operation and microbial communities were investigated. Co-digesters treating sludge were co-fed 20% untreated or pretreated (55 °C, pH 12) PHB. Pretreatment resulted in shorter lag (5 d shorter) before methane production increased after co-digestion. At steady-state, co-digesters converted 86% and 91% of untreated and pretreated PHB to methane, respectively. Bacterial communities were different before and after bioplastic co-digestion, whereas …
