A Musician Centered Toolkit For Audiologists, Ava Bonavita
A Musician Centered Toolkit For Audiologists, Ava Bonavita
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The toolkit for audiologists working with musicians includes a set of materials for use in a musician centered audiology practice. Given the rise in streaming of music by individuals of all ages and the recognition of susceptibility of musicians to hearing loss, the prevalence of hearing loss is on the rise necessitating the need for materials and protocols to better protect, educate, and treat music lovers of all ages who may be prone to hearing loss. Music induced hearing loss typically falls under the category of recreational noise exposure, a subset of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Musicians are the …
Feminist And Anti-Feminist Discourses On Abortion In Haiti From 2010 To 2019, Katia Henrys
Feminist And Anti-Feminist Discourses On Abortion In Haiti From 2010 To 2019, Katia Henrys
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
While women in Haiti obtained important changes in discriminatory laws after the end of the Duvalier era, other issues remained unresolved. Haiti is amongst six countries in the Caribbean and Latin America that criminalize abortion. This does not prevent women from practicing abortion at very high risks: it is estimated that a third of the maternal deaths are due to abortions in the country. The January 2010 earthquake killed thousands of people and feminist leaders were also victims. How did feminist activists continue the work to legalize abortion after this event? How are they perceived in the media? This paper …
Environmental Adaptations And Agency: An Ecological Reframing Of Design And Implementation Practices For Disability, Jennifer Adler
Environmental Adaptations And Agency: An Ecological Reframing Of Design And Implementation Practices For Disability, Jennifer Adler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This multi-phase dissertation explores the role of agency and participation in the successful implementation of adaptations for disability. Utilizing an online survey examining the ways people acquire and adapt assistive technologies as well as a series of comprehensive collaboratively constructed “Adaptation Stories,” it examines the acquisition experiences of a sample of those who rely on adaptations and assistive devices.
Quantitative analysis of survey data suggests significant correlations between overall satisfaction with feelings of functional efficacy, overall satisfaction with involvement, overall satisfaction with perceived receptivity of the team, functional efficacy with involvement, functional efficacy with receptivity of team, as well as …
Electroencephalographic Asymmetry, Emotion Regulation, And Their Relationships With Depression Risk, Aliza Jacob
Electroencephalographic Asymmetry, Emotion Regulation, And Their Relationships With Depression Risk, Aliza Jacob
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Research investigating patterns of electroencephalographic (EEG) brain asymmetry aids our understanding of neural systems involved in the processing of emotion, motivation, and psychopathology. Withdrawal-motivated negative emotions characteristic of depression are associated with relative right prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity, whereas approach- motivated positive emotions are associated with relative left PFC activity. Styles of emotion regulation (ER), or modulation of the intensity and duration of emotional responses, are also associated with presence (e.g., suppression, or maladaptive ER) versus absence (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, or adaptive ER) of depression vulnerability. Most PFC asymmetry studies of emotion, depression, and/or ER rely upon EEG recorded …

Gendered Subjectivity And Resistance: Brazilian Women’S Performance-For-Camera, 1973–1982, Gillian Sneed
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation considers the work of a group of women artists in Brazil during the period of the military dictatorship (1964–1985), working in the genre of “performance-for-camera” (i.e., performance for film and video, rather than for a live audience). The artists are Lygia Pape (1927–2004), Letícia Parente (1930–1991), Anna Bella Geiger (b. 1933), Sonia Andrade (b. 1935), Anna Maria Maiolino (b. 1942), and Regina Vater (b. 1943). Some of these women were friends and colleagues who collaborated with each other; all of them contributed significantly to the development of film and video art in Brazil. Their works share an impulse …
Getting The Benefit Of The Doubt: The Effect Of Randomization Ratio On The Placebo Response, Taiki Matsuura
Getting The Benefit Of The Doubt: The Effect Of Randomization Ratio On The Placebo Response, Taiki Matsuura
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Placebos are commonly employed in clinical trials as inactive treatments to which experimental treatments are compared against in order to control for psychological “noise.” Randomized double-blind placebo control studies are considered the “gold standard” in epidemiologic research because they can provide the strongest possible evidence of causation if designed correctly (Hulley, Cummings, Browner, & Grady, 2007). One phenomenon that poses a threat to the integrity of this evidence is the placebo response (PR), or referred to as the “placebo effect.” Expectancy is considered a central PR mechanism and boasts the most empirical support among all proposed mechanisms. Expectancy is not …
The Role Of The Direct And Indirect Basal Ganglia Pathways In The Learning, Performance, And Goal-Directed Control Of Action Sequences, Eric Garr
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Animals engage in intricately woven action sequences that are constructed from trial-and-error learning, but the mechanisms by which the brain links together individual actions which are later recalled as fluid chains of behavior are not fully understood. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the learning and goal-directed control of action sequences in rats. Experiment 1 addresses a question that comes out of a reinforcement learning model of action sequencing: how does the extent of training change how the performance of an action sequence is impacted by reward devaluation. The data show that action sequences remain goal-directed overall regardless …
Emotion Processing Deficits In Psychopathy: Does Cueing To Relevant Facial Features Increase Cognitive And Emotional Empathy?, Shawn E. Fagan
Emotion Processing Deficits In Psychopathy: Does Cueing To Relevant Facial Features Increase Cognitive And Emotional Empathy?, Shawn E. Fagan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Psychopathy is a multifaceted disorder characterized by a lack of cognitive and emotional empathy. The traditional model of psychopathy divides the disorder into two factors: Factor 1 consists of the interpersonal and affective traits of psychopathy while Factor 2 measures antisocial behaviors and lifestyle choices. The attention-to-the-eyes hypothesis argues that psychopathic individuals have impaired emotion recognition (specifically for fear) due to deficits in orienting attention to salient facial features like the eyes. Psychopathic individuals also display blunted autonomic responding to emotional stimuli, though whether this is due to attention-orienting deficits remains to be clarified. The present project investigated whether empathy-related …

Impact of Religiosity and Level of Acculturation on Cultural Alignment: An Exploration of Terror Management Mechanisms among Muslim American Women
by
Farah Taha Goheer, M.A.
Advisor: Joel Sneed, Ph.D.
Background: Terror management theory (TMT) is based upon the notion that human beings require ongoing psychological protection from the unyielding, existential threat of death. A large body of evidence has shown that human beings manage death-related terror by aligning with and endorsing the dominant views of their cultural worldviews. Notably, as immigrants experience a new culture, worldviews become rearticulated to incorporate elements of host and heritage cultures. However, it is …
Neural Correlates Of Automatic Emotional Processing And Emotion Regulation In Empathy And Psychopathy-Related Coldheartedness, Danielle Difilipo
Neural Correlates Of Automatic Emotional Processing And Emotion Regulation In Empathy And Psychopathy-Related Coldheartedness, Danielle Difilipo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Psychopathy is a personality disorder that is defined, in part, by a lack of empathy. Psychopathy-related empathic deficits have been associated with atypical behavioral and neural responses to emotional facial expressions. Although the mirror neuron system (MNS) has been implicated in empathy, very few studies have examined the role of MNS functioning as it pertains to empathy impairments in psychopathy. Moreover, there is very little empirical research regarding emotion regulation in psychopathy, and specifically whether emotional responses can be intentionally upregulated. The present study sought to clarify whether the MNS is functionally intact in adults with subclinical psychopathic traits, particularly …
Cyber-Narrative In Opera: Three Case Studies, Naomi Barrettara
Cyber-Narrative In Opera: Three Case Studies, Naomi Barrettara
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation looks at three newly composed operas that feature what I call cyber-narratives: a work in which the story itself is inextricably linked with digital technologies, such that the characters utilize, interact with, or are affected by digital technologies to such a pervasive extent that the impact of said technologies is thematized within the work. Through an analysis of chat rooms and real-time text communication in Nico Muhly’s Two Boys (2011), artificial intelligence in Søren Nils Eichberg’s Glare (2014), and mind uploading and digital immortality in Tod Machover’s Death and the Powers (2010), a nexus of ideologies surrounding voice, …
Hyaluronan At The Brain-Environment Interface, Donald M. Thevalingam
Hyaluronan At The Brain-Environment Interface, Donald M. Thevalingam
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Hyaluronan (HA; Hyaluronic Acid), a primary scaffolding component of the brain extracellular matrix, serves as an integral structural component to the brain extracellular space (ECS). The fossorial African naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber; NM-R), a mammal which lives in a low-oxygen environment and is capable of tolerating hypoxia and hypercapnia, has been shown to synthesize and sustain a unique high-molecular-mass variant of hyaluronan macromolecule (HMM-HA). This body of work highlights HA’s role in mediating the interplay between brain ECM composition, ECS structure, and cell viability.
Here we employ the NM-R as a unique animal model to observe the role of the …
Murine Genetic Variance In Sugar And Fat-Conditioned Flavor Preferences: Roles Of Dopamine, Opioid And Nmda Receptors And Nutritive Sensing, Tamar T. Kraft
Murine Genetic Variance In Sugar And Fat-Conditioned Flavor Preferences: Roles Of Dopamine, Opioid And Nmda Receptors And Nutritive Sensing, Tamar T. Kraft
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As obesity and diabetes have emerged as a severe public health crisis, understanding the mechanisms underlying the consumption of sugars and fats has become a topic of vigorous study. From a biological standpoint, genetic dispositions, neurochemical and hormonal influences, and predetermined orosensory and postingestive signals that modulate the hunger and satiety process may govern physiological aspects of the obesity puzzle. In addition to an innate appetite and attraction for simple carbohydrates and fats, learning plays an important role in modulating preferences for sugar- and fat-rich foods in rodents, including inbred mouse strains. Marked genetic variance has been observed among murine …
Getting Located: Queer Semiotics In Dress, Callen Zimmerman
Getting Located: Queer Semiotics In Dress, Callen Zimmerman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The body, a long contested site of identity construction, has been used by historically by queers to convey desire, build affinity and transgress norms. Looking at the fashioned queer body, this capstone takes the form of a proposal for an art exhibition at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. Seeking to engage with objects, performance and film which approximate, provide proxy for or depart from the body as a site, it explores the social and political quagmire of getting dressed. Comprised of contemporary art that looks at the rupture of legible bodily semiotics, this show wonders what …
An Evolutionary Perspective On Foraging Strategies And Group Dynamics In Bio-Social Inspired Cognitive Radio Networks, Anna Wisniewska
An Evolutionary Perspective On Foraging Strategies And Group Dynamics In Bio-Social Inspired Cognitive Radio Networks, Anna Wisniewska
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Saturation of wireless channels is inevitable as the number of wireless devices grows exponentially in an environment of limited radio spectrum capacity. Cognitive radio technology has been proposed to relieve overcrowded spectrum resources by allowing licensed channels to be opportunistically accessed by unlicensed users (cognitive radio devices) during periods of time when the license holder (primary user) is absent from its channel. Uncoordinated competition over limited resources among cognitive radio devices poses complex co-existence challenges. We propose novel bio-social inspired behavioral models and map out plausible evolutionary trajectories of co-use strategies in the cognitive radio ecosystem. By drawing parallels between …
Improving Measurement And Expanding Meta-Analytic Knowledge: Social And Emotional Learning In Elementary And Early Childhood, Dana M. Murano
Improving Measurement And Expanding Meta-Analytic Knowledge: Social And Emotional Learning In Elementary And Early Childhood, Dana M. Murano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the last several decades, the development of student social and emotional skills in educational contexts has received much attention, both domestically and internationally. Whereas previous school-based educational practices had primarily focused on the teaching and testing of cognitive skills, we now recognize that there are constituents of academic success beyond the cognitive skills that are traditionally taught and tested, and the field of social and emotional learning (SEL) has emerged as a result. This two-study dissertation attempted to fill existing gaps in the development of SEL practices by exploring new horizons in both intervention and measurement with preschool and …
Internal And External Attention In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tehila Eilam-Stock
Internal And External Attention In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tehila Eilam-Stock
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental condition affecting individuals throughout the lifespan. Sensory hypersensitivity and superior perceptual acuity are well documented in individuals with ASD, and may indicate heightened orientation of attention to external stimuli, as attention can augment sensory perception. Recent evidence from mind-wandering research suggests that the ability to disengage attention from the external environment and direct it internally to self-generated mentation is crucial for adaptive cognition and behavior, as it allows for incorporation of past knowledge and experience in the interpretation of novel situations. We hypothesized that ASD is related to an imbalance between externally …
Structure And Function Of Dopamine In The Inner Ear And Auditory Efferent System Of A Vocal Fish, Jonathan T. Perelmuter
Structure And Function Of Dopamine In The Inner Ear And Auditory Efferent System Of A Vocal Fish, Jonathan T. Perelmuter
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The neuromodulator dopamine is considered essential for coordinating the internal motivational state of an organism with appropriate behavioral responses to stimuli in the external environment. This could be accomplished by modifying the function of neural circuits involved in sensory processing such that they are “tuned in” and optimally sensitive to important stimuli during critical time windows. While dopamine modulation of auditory processing has been studied in the central nervous system, neuromodulation can also occur outside the brain, in the inner ear. The majority of investigations of dopamine in the ear are conducted using rodents and focus on its role in …
The Evolution Of Spinosad Resistance In Colorado Potato Beetles (Leptinotarsa Decemlineata), Coby Michael Klein
The Evolution Of Spinosad Resistance In Colorado Potato Beetles (Leptinotarsa Decemlineata), Coby Michael Klein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Colorado potato beetles (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) are a major pest of cultivated potato plants worldwide. They are well-known for their ability to rapidly evolve resistance to all major classes of pesticides. Defoliation of potato plants by L. decemlineata can reduce potato yields by a considerable margin. The damage done by resistant beetles is steep and much research is focused on developing new chemical controls, especially those derived from naturally occurring compounds. Spinosad is a relatively new natural product insecticide, introduced approximately a decade ago, suitable for use in organic farming. Potato beetles on Long Island, NY developed very strong …
Sex, Scents, And Cephalopods: Factors That Affect Social And Reproductive Behavior In Chambered Nautilus And Oval Squid, Naomi J. Lewandowski
Sex, Scents, And Cephalopods: Factors That Affect Social And Reproductive Behavior In Chambered Nautilus And Oval Squid, Naomi J. Lewandowski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Cephalopods are a highly specialized group of molluscs that show a wide range of behavioral patterns. Chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius) and oval squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) are two very distinct species of cephalopod that both provide unique insight into cephalopod reproductive and social behavior. In experiments utilizing both species, I aimed to fill in knowledge gaps in a range of reproductive behaviors from fundamental responses to conspecifics, to preferred mating habitat.
In Chapter 1 and 2 I tested individual nautiluses in a Y-maze where recipients were exposed to paired odors of two donor nautiluses. I collected data …
Developing A Dissociative Nanocontainer For Peptide Drug Delivery, Michael Patrick Kelly
Developing A Dissociative Nanocontainer For Peptide Drug Delivery, Michael Patrick Kelly
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The potency and specificity of bioactive peptides have propelled these agents to the forefront of pharmacological research. However, delivery of peptides to their molecular target in cells is a major obstacle to their widespread application. A Trojan Horse strategy of packaging a bioactive peptide within a modified protein cage to protect it during transport, and releasing it at the target site, is a promising delivery method. Recent work has demonstrated that the viral capsid of the P22 bacteriophage can be loaded with an arbitrary, genetically-encoded peptide, and externally decorated with a cell-penetrating peptide, such as HIV-Tat, to translocate across in …
Innate Antibodies, Murine Models, And Evolution: A Study Of Trypanosome Lytic Factor Functions And Their Translational Applications, Joseph P. Verdi
Innate Antibodies, Murine Models, And Evolution: A Study Of Trypanosome Lytic Factor Functions And Their Translational Applications, Joseph P. Verdi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Trypanosome lytic factors (TLFs) are primate-specific antimicrobial protein complexes that lyse African trypanosome parasites by delivering the channel-forming toxin APOL1 to the invading microorganisms. Human serum contains two TLFs that are delivered to the parasite by separate mechanisms, only one of which has been characterized. TLF1 is endocytosed by a receptor that is typically blocked by other serum factors in vivo, suggesting that TLF2 is the more relevant lytic factor in the context of trypanosome immunity. TLF2 is non-covalently associated with polyclonal immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies, which we report here to be involved in the uptake mechanism. The TLF2-IgMs …
“Let’S Call Painful Sex Disorders Sexual Disabilities Instead”: A Feminist Disability Critique Of Feminist Representations And Medical Representations Of Sexual Disorders Of Pain, Oyku Akin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Historically, gender and sexuality have been privileged sites of analysis in feminist theory. Critical feminist engagements with “sexual dysfunction” employ gendered analysis’ of medical and pharmaceutical interventions to sexuality in capitalist modernity in order to underscore the ideological dimensions of modern sexuality. Although sexual disorders of pain received little attention from feminist academics until recently, contemporary feminist work on sexual pain disorders mimic the previous work on sexual dysfunctions in terms of analysis. Analysing recent major feminist contributions employing different epistemological orientations to the study sexual disorders of pain, I show that gender continues to be the privileged common category …
Caring Without Sharing: Philanthropy's Creation And Destruction Of The Common World, Amy B. Schiller
Caring Without Sharing: Philanthropy's Creation And Destruction Of The Common World, Amy B. Schiller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores multiple ways philanthropy builds and undermines the common world. Political science treatments of philanthropy have focused mainly on its role in the development of civil society, with a recent turn towards critiques of philanthropy as an instrument of elite power and tension between private wealth and democratic governance. In this dissertation, I examine how philanthropy can foster enduring spaces of human flourishing, or reduce beneficiaries to objects of pity, surveillance and domination. I trace philanthropy's evolution from ancient to contemporary contexts and propose a framework for philanthropy to, under certain conditions, build and care for the common …
Comparison Of Different Methods For Sperm Vitality Assessment In Frozen-Thawed Holstein Bull Semen, Kakanang Buranaamnuay
Comparison Of Different Methods For Sperm Vitality Assessment In Frozen-Thawed Holstein Bull Semen, Kakanang Buranaamnuay
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The present study evaluated the accuracy of four methods, i.e. eosin-nigrosin, trypan blue, hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST) and Hoechst 33342 (H342)/propidium iodide (PI) for assessing bovine sperm vitality. Frozen-thawed semen (n = 30) of Holstein bulls was layeredon 40%/80% percoll solutions to isolate viable spermatozoa. An aliquot of viable spermatozoa was kept at 37°C (live sample); the rest was submitted to cold shock (dead sample). The two aliquots were mixed in three proportions, corresponding to 0%, 50% and100% of viable cells; the sperm vitality was analyzed. The percentages of viable spermatozoa evaluated with the four methods significantly correlated with the …

Nonrandom Territory Occupancy By Nesting Gyrfalcons (Falco Rusticolus), David L. Anderson, Peter J. Bente, Travis L. Booms, Leah Dunn, Christopher J.W. Mcclure
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
We know little regarding how specific aspects of habitat influence spatial variation in site occupancy by Arctic wildlife, yet this information is fundamental to effective conservation. To address this information gap, we assessed occupancy of 84 Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus Linnaeus, 1758) breeding territories observed annually between 2004 and 2013 in western Alaska. In line with the theory of population regulation by site dependence, we asked whether Gyrfalcons exhibited a nonrandom pattern of site selection and if heterogeneous landscape attributes correlated with observed occupancy patterns. We characterized high- and low-occupancy breeding territories as those occupied more or less often than …
Exploring The Reflective Experiences Of Disadvantaged Children In 4-H: A Phenomenological Study, Cherise Marcella Mbaye
Exploring The Reflective Experiences Of Disadvantaged Children In 4-H: A Phenomenological Study, Cherise Marcella Mbaye
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand how adults, who grew up as disadvantaged children, were influenced by their experiences in a 4-H program located in rural southern Virginia. The research question central to the study was, “How do adults who grew up as disadvantaged children describe their experiences in a local 4-H program within rural southern Virginia?” The theory guiding this study was Markus and Nurius’ (1986) “possible selves” theory (p. 954). I collected data from 11 participants via interviews, focus groups, and replicas of artifacts. Post data collection, I used preset and in vivo coding …

Steering Science Through Output Indicators And Data Capitalism, Ulrich Herb
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Since the mid-1920s, a scientist's performance was tracked by using bibliometric information such as the number of publications or their citations. Today, there are unprecedented possibilities for controlling science by analysing data on production and use of scientific information, so that citations only play a subordinate role in the evaluation of science. To illustrate this change, we take a look at the history of the Dutch publishing house Elsevier and its metamorphosis into a research intelligence service provider, because it ideally reflects the new possibilities of logging and controlling science.
