Hepatobiliary Analyses Suggest Chronic Pah Exposurein Hakes (Urophycis Spp.) Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Rachel Struch, Erin Pulster, Andrea D. Schreier, Steven Murawski Sep 2019

Hepatobiliary Analyses Suggest Chronic Pah Exposurein Hakes (Urophycis Spp.) Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Rachel Struch, Erin Pulster, Andrea D. Schreier, Steven Murawski

C-IMAGE Publications

Prior to theDeepwater Horizon oil spill, we lacked a comprehensive baseline of oil contamination in the Gulf of Mexico’s sediments, water column, and biota. Gaps in prespill knowledge limit our ability to determine the aftereffects of the Deepwater Horizon blowout or prepare to mitigate similar impacts during future oil spill disasters. We examined spatio temporal differences in exposure to and metabolism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 2 hake species (Urophycis spp.)to establish a current baseline for these ecologically important, abundant, and at‐risk demersal fishes. Gulf hake (Urophycis cirrata) and southern hake (Urophycis floridana) were …

aCAdemicS: The Newsletter of the SWOSU College of Arts & Sciences

Approximately one year ago (September 5, 2018, to be exact), Dr. Peter Grant announced his intent to retire as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. That his official retirement date would not be for another ten months was testament to his reputation as a meticulous planner. It also showed his unabating commitment to the welfare of SWOSU. Indeed, for the four months after my own selection to succeed Dean Grant, he arranged a series of informational meetings to ease the transition and to relieve the burden of “recreating the wheel”.

Interconnectedness: The Lived Experiences Of Six Middle School Employees During The First Two Years Of Restorative Practices Implementation, Kathleen Ellen Carroll Bevins Sep 2019

Interconnectedness: The Lived Experiences Of Six Middle School Employees During The First Two Years Of Restorative Practices Implementation, Kathleen Ellen Carroll Bevins

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Restorative practices are being used throughout the world as a response to problem behaviors in schools in an effort to stop the use of ineffective and disproportionately-applied exclusionary discipline methods. Research has been primarily quantitative in nature; thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of six middle school staff members during the first two years of school-based restorative practices implementation. The restorative justice theoretical framework was used to ground this phenomenological study. This framework encompasses the origins of restorative justice, affect theory, and reintegrative shame theory (Braithwaite, 1989a; Tomkins, 2008; Tomkins & Karon, 1962; …

An Application Of Sliding Mode Control To Model-Based Reinforcement Learning, Aaron Thomas Parisi Sep 2019

An Application Of Sliding Mode Control To Model-Based Reinforcement Learning, Aaron Thomas Parisi

Master's Theses

The state-of-art model-free reinforcement learning algorithms can generate admissible controls for complicated systems with no prior knowledge of the system dynamics, so long as sufficient (oftentimes millions) of samples are available from the environ- ment. On the other hand, model-based reinforcement learning approaches seek to leverage known optimal or robust control to reinforcement learning tasks by mod- elling the system dynamics and applying well established control algorithms to the system model. Sliding-mode controllers are robust to system disturbance and modelling errors, and have been widely used for high-order nonlinear system control. This thesis studies the application of sliding mode control …

Deforestation In The Amazon Rainforest, Brandon Wegrowski Sep 2019

Deforestation In The Amazon Rainforest, Brandon Wegrowski

Ballard Brief

Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest represents a critical issue in our modern world, as it is the root cause of many other problems that affect the entire planet. The Amazon's deforestation is particularly relevant because it has been a chronic issue that has plagued the region for decades. Some of the key contributing factors include cattle ranching, infrastructure development such as roads, the building of many large dams, and small-scale subsistence farming. Consequences of deforestation in the Amazon include a significant loss of species and their habitats, a disturbance of indigenous peoples and their health, an increase in CO2 emissions, …

Potential Influence Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Phytoplankton Primary Productivity In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Yao Li, Chuanmin Hu, Antonietta Quigg, Huilin Gao Sep 2019

Potential Influence Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Phytoplankton Primary Productivity In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Yao Li, Chuanmin Hu, Antonietta Quigg, Huilin Gao

C-IMAGE Publications

Nine years after the Deepwater Horizon (DwH) oil spill (20 April–15 July 2010), the recovery of primary productivity at the ocean surface remains to be investigated. Here, we used the normalized fluorescence line height (nFLH) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer as an indicator of chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a). First, from the spatiotemporal variations of nFLH between 2001 and 2017, a reduction of nFLH after the DwH oil spill was observed (for a relatively long period, from 2011 to 2014). Second, a stepwise multiple regression model was used to examine which of the following environmental factors could explain …

© 2019, Cell Stress Society International. Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) commonly found in anhydrobiotic organisms and are frequently correlated with desiccation tolerance. Herein we report new findings on AfrLEA6, a novel group 6 LEA protein from embryos of Artemia franciscana. Assessment of secondary structure in aqueous and dried states with circular dichroism (CD) reveals 89% random coil in the aqueous state, thus supporting classification of AfrLEA6 as an IDP. Removal of water from the protein by drying or exposure to trifluoroethanol (a chemical de-solvating agent) promotes a large gain in secondary structure of AfrLEA6, …

The plant-specific translation initiation complex eIFiso4F is encoded by three genes in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana)-genes encoding the cap binding protein eIFiso4E (eifiso4e) and two isoforms of the large subunit scaffolding protein eIFiso4G (i4g1 and i4g2). To quantitate phenotypic changes, a phenomics platform was used to grow wild-type and mutant plants (i4g1, i4g2, i4e, i4g1 × i4g2, and i4g1 × i4g2 × i4e [i4f]) under various light conditions. Mutants lacking both eIFiso4G isoforms showed the most obvious phenotypic differences from the wild type. Two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry …

© 2019 American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved. Hypoxia and hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) play important roles in the Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) life cycle. KSHV is the causative agent of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) and other AIDS-related malignancies. Kaposi’s sarcoma is a highly vascular tumor, which preferentially develops in the lower extremities of the body where blood vessels are often poorly oxygenated. The main cellular responses to hypoxia are mediated mainly by two isoforms of HIF, HIF-1 and HIF-2. HIF-1 and HIF-2 have common as well as distinct functions, although they are similar in structure and function. Previously, we …

Exploring The Uncanny Valley Effect In Vr/Ar, Ting Yan

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This research is focused on the Uncanny Valley Effect of humanoid avatars, in a Virtual Reality (VR) /Augmented Reality (AR) environment. We designed and conducted a user study to observe people's reaction and behavior when interacting with virtual avatars of different levels of human likeness in VR and AR. Subjective surveys and objective measurement including EEG (Electroencephalogram), GSR (Galvanic Skin Response), Pupil Dilation sensors are used for quantification. Our result shows that, overall, in AR, people tend to like more human-like avatars, and users are more sensitive to facial expressions compared to body resemblance, especially on highly human likeness avatars. …

Genome Analyses Of The New Model Protist Euplotes Vannus Focusing On Genome Rearrangement And Resistance To Environmental Stressors, Xiao Chen, Yaohan Jiang, Feng Gao, Weibo Zheng, Timothy J. Krock, Naomi A. Stover, Chao Lu, Laura A. Katz, Weibo Song

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

As a model organism for studies of cell and environmental biology, the free-living and cosmopolitan ciliate Euplotes vannus shows intriguing features like dual genome architecture (i.e., separate germline and somatic nuclei in each cell/organism), “gene-sized” chromosomes, stop codon reassignment, programmed ribosomal frameshifting (PRF) and strong resistance to environmental stressors. However, the molecular mechanisms that account for these remarkable traits remain largely unknown. Here we report a combined analysis of de novo assembled high-quality macronuclear (MAC; i.e., somatic) and partial micronuclear (MIC; i.e., germline) genome sequences for E. vannus, and transcriptome profiling data under varying conditions. The results demonstrate that: (a) …

© 2019 by the Ecological Society of America Should we build our own phylogenetic trees based on gene sequence data, or can we simply use available synthesis phylogenies? This is a fundamental question that any study involving a phylogenetic framework must face at the beginning of the project. Building a phylogeny from gene sequence data (purpose-built phylogeny) requires more effort, expertise, and cost than subsetting an already available phylogeny (synthesis-based phylogeny). However, we still lack a comparison of how these two approaches to building phylogenetic trees influence common community phylogenetic analyses such as comparing community phylogenetic diversity and estimating trait …

Fisetin, A 3,7,3 ',4 '-Tetrahydroxyflavone Inhibits The Pi3k/Akt/Mtor And Mapk Pathways And Ameliorates Psoriasis Pathology In 2d And 3d Organotypic Human Inflammatory Skin Models, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease that involves the interaction of immune and skin cells, and is characterized by cytokine-driven epidermal hyperplasia, deviant differentiation, inflammation, and angiogenesis. Because the available treatments for psoriasis have significant limitations, dietary products are potential natural sources of therapeutic molecules, which can repair the molecular defects associated with psoriasis and could possibly be developed for its management. Fisetin (3,7,3 ',4 '-tetrahydroxyflavone), a phytochemical naturally found in pigmented fruits and vegetables, has demonstrated proapoptotic and antioxidant effects in several malignancies. This study utilized biochemical, cellular, pharmacological, and tissue engineering tools to characterize the effects of …
