Applying Molecular Communication Theory To Multi-Scale Integrated Models Of Biological Pathways, Zahmeeth Sakkaff, Bige Deniz Unluturk, Massimiliano Pierobon

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The natural communication ability of cells is explored in this paper by providing preliminary results in the estimation of the Mutual Information (MI) of signaling pathway communication channels. These results, based on an application of Molecular Communication (MC) and information theory concepts to multi-scale integrated Flux-Balance Analysis (iFBA) models are a first step to evaluate the potential of cells and their biochemical processes as a substrate for enabling engineered MC channels for the future internet of Bio-Nano Things.

Cave Temperature And Management Implications In Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, Usa, Stanka Šebela, Gretchen Baker, Barbara Luke Sep 2019

Cave Temperature And Management Implications In Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, Usa, Stanka Šebela, Gretchen Baker, Barbara Luke

KIP Articles

Cave air temperature was measured at six locations in Lehman Caves (USA) for one year at hourly intervals. Lehman is a show cave in a national park, treasured for its geological and biological resources. The two monitoring locations that are off of the tour route and, also, relatively distant from the cave’s entrances displayed nearly constant air temperature during the year. The other four sites, along the tour route, show daily temperature variation as well as annual fluctuation. After visitation levels decreased in the autumn, cave temperatures lagged but eventually reached an equilibrium which demonstrates recovery in the quiet winter. …

Three-Dimensional Visualization Software Assists Learning In Students With Diverse Spatial Intelligence In Medical Education, Zehra Jamil, Amna A. Saeed, Sarosh Madhani, Safia Baig, Zahra Cheema, Syeda Sadia Fatima

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

This study evaluated effect of mental rotation (MR) training on learning outcomes and explored effectiveness of teaching via three-dimensional (3D) software among medical students with diverse spatial intelligence. Data from n = 67 student volunteers were included. A preliminary test was conducted to obtain baseline level of MR competency and was utilized to assign participants to two experimental conditions, i.e., trained group (n = 25) and untrained group (n = 42). Data on the effectiveness of training were collected to measure participants' speed and accuracy in performing various MR activities. Six weeks later, a large class format (LCF) session was …

Bioactivities Of Synthesized Curcumin, Curcuminoids, And Their Metal Complexes, Nathaniel Becker, Hannah Tima, Joseph West, Emily Ruff

Student Research and Creative Projects 2019-2020

Curcumin is a compound, derived from the Curcuma longa plant, which has shown anticancer activity and relatively low toxicity in humans. It has been a subject of significant interest in recent years as an adjuvant chemotherapy agent. Literature data for curcumin and related curcuminoids have shown discrepancies in the irreported bioactivities, and this has spurred disputes in the scientific community about their purported benefits. A possible explanation for these inconsistencies is variability between curcumin sources in purity and content. A systematic study has been conducted on the biological properties of curcumin from various sources, both naturally sourced and synthesized using …

Student Research and Creative Projects 2019-2020

Ebola virus (EBOV), a filovirus family member, is a highly pathogenic virus that causes Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) resulting in documented mortality rates in humans as high as 50%. Currently, the basic EBOV virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine contains the Ebola virus (EBOV) matrix VP40 and attachment glycoprotein (GP). VLPs are morphologically and biochemically similar to parental virus, yet because they lack a genome and cannot replicate, are safe enough to be used as vaccines. We hypothesize that addition of a constitutionally active retinoic acid-inducible gene 1 (RIG-I) would enhance the ability of the vaccine to induce interferon-dependent immune functions yielding …

Synaptic Vesicle Localization Within Axons, Taylor Hobbs, Jacob Hines Sep 2019

Synaptic Vesicle Localization Within Axons, Taylor Hobbs, Jacob Hines

Student Research and Creative Projects 2019-2020

Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are the myelinating cells in the central nervous system (CNS) that extend long branchy processes to explore many different neurons 1−4. These myelinating cells provide support to the neuron which allows for messages to be sent rapidly from axon to axon. Without myelin, diseases such as multiple sclerosis effect millions of individuals. Neural impulses are potentiated by releasing synaptic vesicles at the terminal ends of neurons. An emerging area of interest within the field is that vesicle release occurs along the length of axons4 and works as a functional regulator of myelination1. OLs have heightened interactions at synaptic …

Skin Temperature Response To A 1 Km Swim Performed In Normal And Cold-Water, Mason Lentz, Megan Fell, Kristina Ahlers, Samantha Clementson Sep 2019

Skin Temperature Response To A 1 Km Swim Performed In Normal And Cold-Water, Mason Lentz, Megan Fell, Kristina Ahlers, Samantha Clementson

Student Research and Creative Projects 2019-2020

Cold‐water swimming is a recreational activity that may become a future Winter Olympic event. However, unintentional cold‐water exposure can lead to hypothermia or death. Changes in body temperature are known to diminish swimming performance in persons experiencing hypothermia, although thermal changes during recreational exposure are not well characterized. This study examined skin temperature responses to a one‐kilometer swim in normal and cold‐water. Competitive swimmers (2 male and 2 female; age 44±17 years; BMI 24±2) completed a one‐kilometer swim (22 laps × 75 foot lengths) under free‐living indoor (25.5°C water and 25.0°C air) and cold outdoor (10.9°C water and 6.5°C) conditions. …

Gender And Sexuality, Amy E. Randall Sep 2019

Gender And Sexuality, Amy E. Randall

History

This chapter explores gender and sexuality during Stalin's rule. It considers femininities and masculinities, gender identities and relations, sexual norms and practices, and sexual politics and identities. The Stalinist gender and sexual order was not unchanging, uniform, consistent, or entirely new; it was inextricably linked to Soviet discourses and policies about national minorities, religion, class, and broader historical events as well as gender and sexual norms and identities in Imperial Russia and early Soviet rule, It consisted of emancipatory and "radical" as well as repressive and conservative policies. At its core, the Stalinist gender and sexual order was designed to …

Accelerating Scholarly Communication: The Transformative Role Of Preprints, Andrea Chiarelli, Rob Johnson, Emma Richens, Stephen Pinfield Sep 2019

Accelerating Scholarly Communication: The Transformative Role Of Preprints, Andrea Chiarelli, Rob Johnson, Emma Richens, Stephen Pinfield

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Five take-away messages:

Early and fast dissemination, increased opportunities for feedback and openness are seen as the main benefits of preprints.

The main concerns over preprints are the lack of quality assurance, media potentially reporting inaccurate research and journals rejecting articles if a preprint has been posted.

Twitter has been playing a key enabling role in the current second wave of preprints and preprint servers. It also appears to be the main way researchers are exposed to preprints in the first place.

It is not clear who will be responsible for posting preprints in the long-term – researchers or publishers? …
