School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Plants have evolved intimate interactions with soil microbes for a range of beneficial functions including nutrient acquisition, pathogen resistance and stress tolerance. Further understanding of this system is a promising way to advance sustainable agriculture by exploiting the versatile benefits offered by the plant microbiome. The rhizosphere is the interface between plant and soil, and functions as the first step of plant defense and root microbiome recruitment. It features a specialized microbial community, intensive microbe-plant and microbe-microbe interactions, and complex signal communication. To decipher the rhizosphere microbiome assembly of soybean (Glycine max), we comprehensively characterized the soybean rhizosphere microbial …

Developing Process Variables Necessary To Operate Simulacrum: The Lcls Accelerator Simulator, Mirian G. Juan Estrella

STAR Program Research Presentations

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a free electron laser that is located at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. It fires 120 pulses per second, creating x-ray snapshots of materials at the atomic and molecular level as it undergoes any changes or processes. This resulted in many scientific discoveries in chemistry, biology, energy science, and technology. Now, there is a new vision at SLAC regarding LCLS: to develop Simulacrum. Simulacrum is a system that simulates LCLS and its control system. Within Simulacrum there exits services that contain process variables that measure specific parts of a device on LCLS, which communicate …

Santa Rosa Island Restoration Study: Fog Fences Vs. No Fences, Aimee Newell, Stephen Bednar, Kathryn Mceachern

STAR Program Research Presentations

Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park, was grazed by cattle, sheep, pigs, elk, and deer for 154 years, degrading the island’s vegetation and causing erosion. In 1998, the livestock were removed, and in 2011 the remaining big game animals were removed, allowing ecosystem recovery to begin. This study evaluated growth of two native species planted in 2016, at the cloud forest restoration site on the Soledad Ridge. Baccharis pilularis (coyote brush) was planted as nursery stock from 2-inch pots, while Quercus pacifica (island scrub oak) was planted as sprouted acorns. The plants were watered with drip irrigation 2016-2018, …

1. Plant traits can provide unique insights into plant performance at the community scale. Functional composition, defined by both functional diversity and community-weighted trait means (CWMs), can affect the stability of above-ground net primary production (ANPP) in response to climate extremes. Further complexity arises, however, when functional composition itself responds to environmental change. The duration of climate extremes, such as drought, is expected to increase with rising global temperatures; thus, understanding the impacts of long-term drought on functional composition and the corresponding effect that has on ecosystem function could improve predictions of ecosystem sensitivity to climate change.

Physics Publications

Morphometric analysis is a common approach for comparing and categorizing botanical samples; however, completing a suite of analyses using existing tools may require a multi-stage, multi-program process. To facilitate streamlined analysis within a single program, Morphological Analysis of Size and Shape (MASS) for leaves was developed. Its utility is demonstrated using exemplar leaf samples from Acer saccharum, Malus domestica, and Lithospermum.

© 2019, The Author(s). Heparin and heparan sulfate (Hp/HS) are linear complex glycosaminoglycans which are involved in diverse biological processes. The structural complexity brings difficulties in separation, making the study of structure-function relationships challenging. Here we present a separation method for Hp/HS oligosaccharide fractionation with cross-compatible solvent and conditions, combining size exclusion chromatography (SEC), ion-pair reversed phase chromatography (IPRP), and hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) as three orthogonal separation methods that do not require desalting or extensive sample handling. With this method, the final eluent is suitable for structure-function relationship studies, including tandem mass spectrometry and microarray printing. Our data indicate …

Student Research and Creative Projects 2019-2020

Cold‐water swimming is a recreational activity that may become a future Winter Olympic event. However, unintentional cold‐water exposure can lead to arrhythmias, changes in electrocardiogram (ECG) appearance, and death. This study sought to characterize cardiac responses to recreational one‐kilometer swims performed in normal and cold‐water. Competitive swimmers (2 male 2 female; age 44±17 years; BMI 24±2) completed a one kilometer swim (22 laps × 75‐foot lengths) under free‐living indoor (25.5°C water and 25.0°C air) and cold outdoor (10.9°C water and 6.5°C) conditions. Continuous ECGs were obtained with a waterproof recording system (Actiwave, CamNtech Inc., Boerne, TX). ECG PR‐, QT‐, and …

From Romantic Jealousy To Sympathetic Joy: Monogamy, Polyamory, And Beyond, Jorge N. Ferrer Sep 2019

From Romantic Jealousy To Sympathetic Joy: Monogamy, Polyamory, And Beyond, Jorge N. Ferrer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper explores how the extension of contemplative qualities to intimate relationships can transform human sexual/emotional responses and relationship choices. The paper reviews contemporary findings from the field of evolutionary psychology on the twin origins of jealousy and monogamy, argues for the possibility to transform jealousy into sympathetic joy (or compersion), addresses the common objections against polyamory (or nonmonogamy), and challenges the culturally prevalent belief that the only spiritually correct sexual options are either celibacy or (lifelong or serial) monogamy. To conclude, it is suggested that the cultivation of sympathetic joy in intimate bonds can pave the way to overcome …

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Evidence on whether nutritional supplementation affects physical activity (PA) during early childhood is limited. We examined the long-term effects of lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS) on total PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) of children at 4–6 years using an accelerometer for 1 week. Their mothers were enrolled in the International Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement-DYAD randomised controlled trial in Ghana, assigned to daily LNS or multiple micronutrients (MMN) during pregnancy through 6 months postpartum or Fe and folic acid (IFA) during pregnancy and placebo for 6 months postpartum. From 6 to 18 months, children in the LNS group received LNS; …

Exact Traveling Wave Solutions Of The Whitham- Broer-Kaup-Like Equation With Time-Dependent Coefficients, Mustafa Inc, Mustafa Bayram

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The first integral method (FIM) is employed to solve the different type solutions of Whitham-Broer-Kaup-Like (WBKL) equation with time-dependent coefficient. We have acquired different types of solutions of this equation. We have also acquired the constraint conditions for the existence of the obtained solitons according to the parameters. It is shown that the method is effective and a direct method, based on the ring theory of commutative algebra.

Investigation Of Pinched Hysteresis Of A Memristor Emulator Under Ferroresonance, S. Poornima, C. Pugazhendhi Sugumaran Sep 2019

Investigation Of Pinched Hysteresis Of A Memristor Emulator Under Ferroresonance, S. Poornima, C. Pugazhendhi Sugumaran

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The frequent occurrence of ferroresonance phenomenon has destructive effects in distribution systems. The jump resonance accompanied by harmonics can be effectively mitigated using a nonlinear component. The upcoming memristor technology is applied in this work to control the ferroresonance in an inductive voltage transformer, which is used in a distribution substation. Due to non- commercialization of memristors, an emulator in the form of an electrolytic cell is developed. The set-up uses saturated copper sulfate (CuSO4) solution as the electrolyte and copper electrodes having different cross sectional areas. Nonlinearity is realized in the form of the pinched hysteresis loop in the …

Efficient Classification Of Medical Data And Disease Prediction Using Multi Attribute Disease Probability Measure, K. Ananthajothi, M. Subramaniam

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we introduce a multi attribute disease probability -based classification approach. The method first identifies the list of features available in the data set. Based on identified features, the data points have been verified for their completeness with all the features identified. The data points having incomplete and missing features have been eliminated from the data set. Further the method computes the probability measure on each dimension. According to the probability measure of various dimensions, the multi attribute disease probability (MADP) has been measured for each disease class. It is shown that the proposed MADP -based disease prediction …

© 2019 by the authors. Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant with human health and ecological impacts. Gas exchange between terrestrial surfaces and the atmosphere is an important route for Hg to enter and exit ecosystems. Here, we used a dynamic flux chamber to measure gaseous elemental Hg (GEM) exchange over different landscapes in Mississippi, including in situ measurements for a wetland (soil and water), forest floor, pond, mowed field and grass-covered lawn, as well as mesocosm experiments for three different agricultural soils. Fluxes were measured during both the summer and winter. Mean ambient levels of GEM ranged between 0.93-1.57 …
