Biology Faculty Articles
The interdependence of diverse organisms through symbiosis reaches even the deepest parts of the oceans. As part of the DEEPEND project (deependconsortium.org) research on deep Gulf of Mexico biodiversity, we profiled the bacterial communities (‘microbiomes’) and luminous symbionts of 36 specimens of adult and larval deep-sea anglerfishes of the suborder Ceratioidei using 16S rDNA. Transmission Electron Microscopy was used to characterize the location of symbionts in adult light organs (esca). Whole larval microbiomes, and adult skin and gut microbiomes, were dominated by bacteria in the genera Moritella and Pseudoalteromonas genera. 16S rDNA sequencing results from adult fishes corroborate …
Histological Findings In Wild Rodents Of The Great Basin, Andrew W. Bartlow
Histological Findings In Wild Rodents Of The Great Basin, Andrew W. Bartlow
Western North American Naturalist
In the western United States, significant environmental change is expected through the combined effects of climate change, tree mortality, drought, and invasive species. Wild animals can be used as indicators of threats to populations and even entire communities by looking for histopathological changes in their tissues. This method may identify threats to wild populations quickly and more accurately than waiting to observe population declines; however, baseline data are needed for comparisons. Here, rodents are surveyed at 5 sites in the Great Basin to record histopathological changes. Additionally, one site is next to a copper mine that was in operation for …
The Effect Of Social Support On Women's Perception Of Perimenstrual Changes, Gwen G. Morse
The Effect Of Social Support On Women's Perception Of Perimenstrual Changes, Gwen G. Morse
Dissertations
The unidimensional approach that has dominated research on premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has been remiss in visualizing the diversity of factors that may be involved in women's menstrual cycle experiences. Traditional menstrual cycle research reflects a stereotypic negative bias that does not encompass the complexity of the phenomena. For example, even though, the majority of menstrual cycle literature has focused on negative changes during the perimenstruum, some women report positive changes. This research represents an endeavor of a unique nursing intervention aimed at reframing perceptions of menstrual cycle experiences for the purpose of diminishing perimenstrual impairment. The intervention was a health …

Managing My Pregnancy: A Grounded Theory Of Pregnancy And Childbearing Beliefs And Practices Of Women Of Mexican Descent, Lorena Consuelo Guerrero
Dissertations
Examples of pregnancy-specific health beliefs and practices of Hispanic women are found in the medical literature, but the findings regarding the beliefs and practices are often outdated, limited, mostly curative in nature, and are often dismissed as benign cultural practices of a mainly homogeneous cultural group. Hispanic women incorporate both conventional and biomedical practices with traditional medicine/complementary and alternative medicine in their treatment of illnesses. The findings from this study served to illustrate current pregnancy-specific health beliefs and practices of pregnant Hispanic women of Mexican origin. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the pregnancy-specific health …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This research focuses on women representation in lyric of Minang song titled “laki den hobi baburu” popularized by Elly Kasim. The assumption of this research is that the song’s lyric reconstructing Minang women based on patriarchy ideology, where women are marginalized because of having husband whose willing to hunt boars. Moreover, to analyze the phenomenon above this research used Sara Mills critical discourse analysis method which covers macro, micro and representation in the text. However, researcher only focus on micro level analysis. This is a qualitative research which data were acquired by focus group discussion and library research. This song …

Bioinformatics Identification Of Anti-Crispr Loci By Using Homology, Guilt-By-Association, And Crispr Self-Targeting Spacer Approaches, Yanbin Yin, Bowen Yang, Sarah Entwistle
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Anti-CRISPR (Acr) loci/operons encode Acr proteins and Acr-associated (Aca) proteins. Forty-five Acr families have been experimentally characterized inhibiting seven subtypes of CRISPR-Cas systems. We have developed a bioinformatics pipeline to identify genomic loci containing Acr homologs and/or Aca homologs by combining three computational approaches: homology, guilt-by-association, and self-targeting spacers. Homology search found thousands of Acr homologs in bacterial and viral genomes, but most are homologous to AcrIIA7 and AcrIIA9. Investigating the gene neighborhood of these Acr homologs revealed that only a small percentage (23.0% in bacteria and 8.2% in viruses) of them have neighboring Aca homologs and thus form Acr-Aca …

Shipboard Nursing On Aircraft Carriers: The Lived Experience Of Twelve Navy Nurses, Catherine Wilson Cox
Shipboard Nursing On Aircraft Carriers: The Lived Experience Of Twelve Navy Nurses, Catherine Wilson Cox
Dissertations
The purpose of this study, was to describe the lived experience of shipboard nursing on aircraft carriers. As of Spring 2001, the Navy had twelve aircraft carriers in operation. Each carrier's medical department includes just one Navy nurse assigned to directly care for over 5,500 personnel. Currently, there is no research that describes what it is like to be the only nurse available to a patient population in the thousands. Using the principles of phenomenology, twelve Navy nurses previously stationed aboard aircraft carriers were interviewed to explore their experience as ships' nurses.
Development Of The Woman Abuse Screening Tool, Wendy K. Taylor
Development Of The Woman Abuse Screening Tool, Wendy K. Taylor
Dissertations
Researchers reported that 25%-33% of female trauma victims had injuries caused by battering. More than one million women per year seek medical care for injuries caused by battering. Of those who seek medical care, only one in ten is officially identified as a battered woman. Women are routinely screened for a variety of problems, conditions, or medical disorders, but violence is not included. An important issue related to identifying battered women is the lack of an appropriate comprehensive screening tool. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) determine whether using a comprehensive abuse screening tool results in an increased …

Does Fatigue Impact Static And Dynamic Balance Variables In Athletes With Previously Ankle Injury?, Michelle Lacey, Bernard Donne
Does Fatigue Impact Static And Dynamic Balance Variables In Athletes With Previously Ankle Injury?, Michelle Lacey, Bernard Donne
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(3): 1121-1137, 2019. Ankle injury, resulting in deficits in static and dynamic balance, can result in significant time loss to sport, affect daily activities and potentially place athletes at greater risk of re-injury. In order to identify athletes at risk of ankle injury accurate and reliable balance assessment tools are required. The purpose of the current study was to quantify reliability of static and dynamic balance variables in currently healthy, previously injured, athletes (n = 19) and assess the impact of an intense intermittent zig-zag running protocol to volitional exhaustion, rated by RPE, on balance …
Heroic Consciousness, Scott T. Allison
Heroic Consciousness, Scott T. Allison
Heroism Science
This article describes heroic consciousness – how heroes perceive, experience, and think about the world. I describe the transformation of consciousness from its pre-heroic state to its heroic state. Pre-heroic consciousness is characterized by nescient and maladaptive thinking, dualism, separation, mono-rationality, and a naïve sense of empowerment. Heroic consciousness is exemplified by nondualism, unity, transrationality, and the wisdom of tempered empowerment. Heroic consciousness is achieved via three routes: (1) traversing the hero’s journey, (2) effective use of specific spiritual practices, and/or (3) participation in hero training programs. I discuss the implications of heroic consciousness for individual and global well-being.

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used insecticides worldwide and are typically deployed as seed treatments (hereafter NST) in many grain and oilseed crops, including soybeans. However, there is a surprising dearth of information regarding NST effectiveness in increasing soybean seed yield, and most published data suggest weak, or inconsistent yield benefit. The US is the key soybean-producing nation worldwide and this work includes soybean yield data from 194 randomized and replicated field studies conducted specifically to evaluate the effect of NSTs on soybean seed yield at sites within 14 states from 2006 through 2017. Here we show that across the …

Land management practices and disturbances (e.g. overgrazing, fire) have substantial effects on grassland forage production. When using satellite remote sensing to monitor climate impacts, such as drought stress on annual forage production, minimizing land management practices and disturbance effects sends a clear climate signal to the productivity data. This study investigates the effect of this climate signal by: (1) providing spatial estimates of expected biomass under specific climate conditions, (2) determining which drought indices explain the majority of interannual variability in this biomass, and (3) developing a predictive model that estimates the annual biomass early in the growing season. To …
Are Humans Natural? Part 2: Exploring Human-Nature Relational Values And The Balance Of Nature, Nathan Ruhl
Are Humans Natural? Part 2: Exploring Human-Nature Relational Values And The Balance Of Nature, Nathan Ruhl
Open Educational Resources
This learning module is part of a series of modules that seeks to help students develop human-nature relational values. Relational values are more readily developed when the methods employed reference species/environments/landscapes/situations that students are familiar with already and may encounter during their everyday lives. In this activity students are asked to consider whether nature is in balance. The idea that nature is in balance extends deep into human history, but modern scientific evidence clearly demonstrates that nature is not in balance. Despite scientific evidence, the perception that nature is stable or in balance persists in human culture. This activity challenges …

A Graphene Oxide-Based Fluorescence Assay For Sensitive Detection Of Dna Exonuclease Enzymatic Activity, Xiao Liu, Yingfen Wu, Xu Wu, Julia Zhao
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The 3′–5′ exonuclease enzyme plays a dominant role in multiple pivotal physiological activities, such as DNA replication and repair processes. In this study, we designed a sensitive graphene oxide (GO)-based probe for the detection of exonuclease enzymatic activity. In the absence of Exo III, the strong π–π interaction between the fluorophore-tagged DNA and GO causes the efficient fluorescence quenching via a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In contrast, in the presence of Exo III, the fluorophore-tagged 3′-hydroxyl termini of the DNA probe was digested by Exo III to set the fluorophore free from adsorption when GO was introduced, causing an …

In this assignment, students examine the coverage of a single event from two different points of view. They analyze the frames used in each report and determine how the journalist uses those frames to construct meaning and encourages a way of thinking about an environmental issue. What frames are represented in the reports? How might this also impact what is included in the report and how a journalist represents environmental issues?
Environmental Cost Vs. Health Benefit Of Radioisotope Usage In Medicine, Nicholas Whiting
Environmental Cost Vs. Health Benefit Of Radioisotope Usage In Medicine, Nicholas Whiting
Open Educational Resources
This module is developed for implementation in a class that discusses the use of radioisotopes in a biomedical setting. The inspiration is a class I teach (Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation), which covers the use of radioisotopes as tracers in biomedical imaging (scintigraphy, SPECT, PET, etc.). The goal of the module is to go further in depth regarding the environmental impact of the use of radioisotopes (from their generation to their disposal—keeping track of any radioactive byproducts), and compare that to the potential for benefits in the quality and/or quantity of a patient’s life (does using the radioisotopes allow patients to live …

Are Humans Natural? Part 3: Nature Relatedness And The American Dream, Nathan Ruhl, Taylor Dobson
Open Educational Resources
This learning module is part of a series of activities designed to encourage students to develop relational values with nature. In this activity, students reflect on their relationship with nature and consider the impact of their plans/goals for the future on the environment and the larger goal of sustainability. Students evaluate their relationship with nature through the Nature Relatedness (NR-6) Test (Nisbet and Zelenski, 2013), compare their NR-6 score to others, consider how their goals (“dreams”) are related to the American Dream, and speculate on the attainability of sustainability given our individually driven goals for the future. This activity challenges …

The Emergence Of The Alt-Right Under President Trump, Kayla M. Turner
Theses and Dissertations
White supremacy has been a continuing phenomenon in the United States since the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan in the mid-1800s. While there has been a general tendency to relegate hate crimes committed by white supremacists to past historical events, more recent events, such as the protests and attack in Charlottesville and the rise in hate crimes, suggest white supremacy may currently be increasing, particularly in response to President Donald Trump’s election. The current study examined the relationship between white supremacists and President Trump and how Stormfront users’ rhetoric about the president has changed over time. A content analysis …
