The Importance Of Early Diagnosis And Treatment Of Postpartum Depression, Sarah E. Drake, Alison L. Huet, Tana M. Peterman, Jamie L. Drees, Robert D. Raiff
Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major depressive episode following childbirth that can have serious consequences affecting the family. Consequences range from marital problems and issues with child development to maternal suicide and infantcide. Depression in mothers can lead to cognitive and social impairment in the child as well as paternal postpartum depression in the father. Due to the severity of these problems, it is important to diagnose and treat mothers as soon as possible. There are several symptoms that are evident in mothers suffering from PPD that lead to diagnosis. Symptoms are similar to those of major depressive episodes, but …

Women’S Political Participation And Grassroots Democratic Sustainability In Osun State, Nigeria (2010-2015), Isola Abidemi Abiola
Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought
Studies on Osun State and women's representation in both the federal and state levels and in the legislative and executive arms of government indicated it has the second highest women's representation in South West, Nigeria. This gives an impression that democracy is being sustained at the grassroots. However, the fact on the ground is to the contrary, especially when compared with their male counterparts and their representation in government. Therefore, this study explores women's political participation and grassroots democratic sustainability in Osun State, Nigeria from 1999 to 2015.This study adopted survey research design. Data were collected through questionnaires and unstructured …

Early Negative Affect In Males And Females With Fragile X Syndrome: Implications For Anxiety And Autism, Carla A. Will, Abigail L. Hogan, Elizabeth A. Will, Samuel Mcquillin, Bridgette L. Kelleher, Jane E. Roberts
Faculty Publications
Background Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder that is highly comorbid with anxiety and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Elevated negative affect in young children has been associated with increased risk for both anxiety and ASD; however, these relations remain poorly understood in FXS.
Methods The present prospective longitudinal study examined the trajectory of negative affect from infancy through preschool in males and females with FXS and typical development and its relation to anxiety and ASD.
Results Results indicate a complex association reflecting group, developmental, and sex effects. Specifically, the group with FXS displayed a trajectory of increasing negative …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Rivers (on land) and turbidity currents (in the ocean) are the most important sediment transport processes on Earth. Yet how rivers generate turbidity currents as they enter the coastal ocean remains poorly understood. The current paradigm, based on laboratory experiments, is that turbidity currents are triggered when river plumes exceed a threshold sediment concentration of ~1 kg/m3. Here we present direct observations of an exceptionally dilute river plume, with sediment concentrations 1 order of magnitude below this threshold (0.07 kg/m3), which generated a fast (1.5 m/s), erosive, short-lived (6 min) turbidity current. However, no turbidity current occurred during subsequent river …

A Secondary Analysis Of Mammography And Pap Screening Among Women With Diabetes, Janet G. Marshall
Dissertations
Using a national database for secondary analysis, the purpose of this investigation was to determine if women with diabetes have different patterns of screening for breast and cervical cancer than women of the general population; and, if so, identify the determinants of the screening pattern. The PRECEDE Model was the organizing framework for this investigation of the complex issues related to cancer screening. The 12 states utilizing the optional women's health module for the 2003 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) was downloaded into STATA Software.

Burdern Of Chronic Health Conditions And Healthcare Utilization Among Mobile Populations In Sub-Saharan Africa, Elizabeth M. Ortiz
Burdern Of Chronic Health Conditions And Healthcare Utilization Among Mobile Populations In Sub-Saharan Africa, Elizabeth M. Ortiz
Dissertations and Theses
Background: Much of public health research in sub-Saharan Africa on mobile occupations, such as truck drivers and sex workers, has focused on HIV risk. However, evidence is emerging to suggest that the HIV epidemic among these groups is coupled with a high prevalence of chronic health conditions (CHC), specifically hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. For people living with HIV, increased risk of CHC may also be linked to HIV-related chronic inflammatory cascade. In Africa, there has been little research on CHC risk factors or patterns of healthcare utilization among mobile populations. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to examine the …

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings
The current era arguably poses the most complex and challenging environmental dilemmas in human history. With climate change, increasingly scarce resources, and exponentially expanding demand, traditional legal notions of standing, harm, and liability are being stretched and reshaped to accommodate a shifting set of values regarding natural resources and potentially respond to the moment. While these novel and innovative approaches are modestly reshaping the fields of natural resources and environmental law, however, the historical and time-honored claims of Indian tribes are also presenting avenues for rethinking the foundations of those areas of law. Arising both within and outside of the …
Social Determinants Of Health Inequality: Predictors Of Hiv Transmission Among African Americans In The Deep South, Kayla Allison
Social Determinants Of Health Inequality: Predictors Of Hiv Transmission Among African Americans In The Deep South, Kayla Allison
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
HIV/AIDS has become an epidemic in Black communities in the Deep South, which poses a major public health crisis. Unfortunately, the lack of attention from health officials has resulted in African Americans experiencing the greatest burden of the disease as compared to any other racial/ethnic group. Thus, this cross-sectional, correlational study examined predictors of HIV transmission with an emphasis on the course of the disease among African Americans in the Deep South region of the United States given the legacy of slavery, historical racism, and plight of African Americans in this geographical area. The institution of slavery was not isolated …
Getting Sexual And Gender Minority Health “Into The Brick And Mortar”: A Mixed Methods Implementation Study, Mandi Pratt-Chapman
Getting Sexual And Gender Minority Health “Into The Brick And Mortar”: A Mixed Methods Implementation Study, Mandi Pratt-Chapman
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) have unique health risks and health care needs, but medical students receive little training on SGM health (Obedin-Maliver, et al., 2011). This mixed methods study sought to learn from curricular champions in diverse settings to apply lessons learned at the George Washington University (GW). Exploratory models that included eight potential predictor variables for six criterion variables were tested using multiple linear regression. Criterion variables were: knowledge, attitudes, and clinical preparedness measured by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS; Bidell, 2017); attitudes measured by the Attitudes Toward LGBT Patients Scale …

There is currently no information regarding the role that whole mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways play in counteracting environmental stress in photosynthetic organisms. To address this gap, we exposed Ulva compressa to chronic levels of copper (10 µM) specific inhibitors of Extracellular Signal Regulated Kinases (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal Kinases (JNK), and Cytokinin Specific Binding Protein (p38) MAPKs alone or in combination. Intracellular copper accumulation and photosynthetic activity (in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence) were measured after 6 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 6 days of exposure. By day 6, when one (except JNK) or more of the MAPK pathways …

A Case For Eustress In Grazing Animals, Juan J. Villalba, Xavier Manteca
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Herbivores grazing in extensive systems are exposed to a series of challenges, rooted in the inherent spatial and temporal variability of their environment that potentially constrain their health, nutrition, and welfare. Nevertheless, in this review, we argue that challenges induced by some biotic (e.g., vegetation) and abiotic (e.g., terrain) factors may also be viewed as “positive” sources of stress or eustress, since they present complex problems, that when solved successfully elicit a greater degree of behavioral plasticity and adaptability in grazing animals. Chemically and structurally diverse landscapes require animals to display complex behaviors and exhibit adaptive capabilities, like building a …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Endoglin is a 180-kDa glycoprotein receptor primarily expressed by the vascular endothelium and involved in cardiovascular disease and cancer. Heterozygous mutations in the endoglin gene (ENG) cause herediatry hemorrhagic telangiectasia type 1, a vascular disease that presents with nasal and gastrointestinal bleeding, skin and mucosa telangiectase, and arteriovenous malformations in internal organs. A circulating form of endoglin (alias soluble endoglin, sEng), proteolytically released from the membrane-bound protein, has been observed in several inflammation-related pathological conditions and appears to contribute to endothelial dysfunction and cancer development through unknown mechanisms. Membrane-bound endoglin is an auxiliary component of the TGF-B receptor complex and …

Exit Exam Testing, Stress, And Test Anxiety In Prelicensure Nursing Education, Lisa D. Brodersen
Exit Exam Testing, Stress, And Test Anxiety In Prelicensure Nursing Education, Lisa D. Brodersen
Dissertations
Knowledge acquisition in nursing education is commonly assessed with tests, also called exams, or examinations. Because of their impact on course grades and academic success, tests are a substantial source of anxiety and stress for nursing students and the central unifying theme of this three-manuscript dissertation. There are two high-stakes tests that are particularly important in nursing education: the exit exam and the licensure exam. The exit exam identifies deficiencies in nursing knowledge and clinical judgment and quantifies students' probability of passing the licensure exam, which is the final test of competency for nursing practice. The first manuscript resulted from …

The hindlimb unloading (HU) model has been used extensively to simulate the cephalad fluid shift and musculoskeletal disuse observed in spaceflight with its application expanding to study immune, cardiovascular and central nervous system responses, among others. Most HU studies are performed with singly housed animals, although social isolation also can substantially impact behavior and physiology, and therefore may confound HU experimental results. Other HU variants that allow for paired housing have been developed although no systematic assessment has been made to understand the effects of social isolation on HU outcomes. Hence, we aimed to determine the contribution of social isolation …

Mapping The Wolverine Way: Identifying Conservation Corridors And Transboundary Linkages In The Canadian Crown Of The Continent Region, Anthony P. Clevenger
CESTiCC Project Reports
The Canadian Crown of the Continent (CCoC) is one of three zones where wolverines can move between Canada and the US, providing the last links for recruitment and ultimately gene flow to the highly fragmented population in the US Rocky Mountains. However, a combination of rapidly expanding logging, energy development and motorized recreation, along with a growing road network, threatens to fragment and diminish connections in this critical transboundary linkage between the US and Canada. This report summarizes a project to complete a 3-year sampling effort in the CCoC, which in turn completed a larger 6-year effort over a vast …

Following the physiological complementary/parallel Celis-Plá et al., by inhibiting extracellular signal regulated kinases (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK), and cytokinin specific binding protein (p38), we assessed the role of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathway in detoxification responses mediated by chronic copper (10 µM) in U. compressa. Parameters were taken at 6, 24, and 48 h, and 6 days (d). H2O2 and lipid peroxidation under copper and inhibition of ERK, JNK, or p38 alone increased but recovered by the sixth day. By blocking two or more MAPKs under copper, H2O2 and lipid peroxidation decayed even below controls. Inhibition of more …

The Role Of Chromatin State Transitions In Modulating Early Phosphate-Deficiency Response Genes In Plants, Maryam Foroozani
The Role Of Chromatin State Transitions In Modulating Early Phosphate-Deficiency Response Genes In Plants, Maryam Foroozani
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Phosphorus (P) is an essential plant macronutrient vital to fundamental metabolic processes. Plant-available P is low in most soils, making it a frequent limiter of growth. Declining P reserves for fertilizer production exasperates this agricultural challenge. Plants modulate complex responses to fluctuating P levels via global transcriptional regulatory networks. Although chromatin structure plays a substantial role in controlling gene expression, the chromatin-level mechanisms involved in regulating P homeostasis have not been determined.
In this work, I used chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) combined with next-generation DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) to map the distribution of H3K4me3 in rice (Oryza sativa L.) during both …
