Trauma-Informed Schools: Impacts For Students And Applications For Educators, Megan Meister Oct 2019

Trauma-Informed Schools: Impacts For Students And Applications For Educators, Megan Meister

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Students exposed to trauma face a range of negative outcomes from poor adult physical and mental health, behavioral and emotional problems, and difficulties performing in the classroom. Trauma-informed schools attempt to break that cycle by identifying students early, providing interventions to promote healing, and preventing future trauma from happening. In order to meet this goal, schools must make systematic changes and collaborate with parents and mental health agencies. Teachers make changes to their classroom practices and environment to ensure that students feel safe and connected. In this literature review, the negative impacts of trauma and history of trauma research are …

Process Reengineering And Optimization In Healthcare For Treating The Uninsured, Farnaz Nourbakhsh Oct 2019

Process Reengineering And Optimization In Healthcare For Treating The Uninsured, Farnaz Nourbakhsh

Operations Research and Engineering Management Theses and Dissertations

Uninsured patients suffering from chronic diseases may have access to medical treatment under federal law, EMTALA, only after being evaluated as in'emergent, life-threatening condition' in the emergency room (ER). These patients seek regular treatment typically at the ER of county hospitals throughout the nation. In the case of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), uninsured patients needing recurring dialysis receive the treatment conditional on a screening assessment in the ER. Unfortunately, depending on the screening outcome, some of these patients may not qualify for immediate treatment, and hence, may be rejected service under the existing treatment protocol. This practice is known …

The Role Of Introductory Geoscience Courses In Preparing Teachers—And All Students—For The Future: Are We Making The Grade?, Anne E. Egger Oct 2019

The Role Of Introductory Geoscience Courses In Preparing Teachers—And All Students—For The Future: Are We Making The Grade?, Anne E. Egger

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Introductory geoscience courses enroll hundreds of thousands of students a year, most of whom do not major in the geosciences. For many, including future K–12 teachers, an introductory course is the only place they will encounter Earth science at the college level. New standards for K–12 science education have profound implications for teacher preparation, particularly in Earth science. The new standards call for taking a systems approach, highlighting how humans interact with Earth, making use of science and engineering practices, and engaging students in discourse. Analysis of responses to the National Geoscience Faculty Survey (n = 813 in 2004; …

Rose-Ringed Parakeets, Page E. Klug, William P. Bukoski, Aaron B. Shiels, Bryan M. Kluever, Shane R. Siers

Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series

Rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri; hereafter RRPA; Figure 1) are an invasive species in the United States, present in Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia, and with established populations in California, Florida, and Hawaii. They are also the most successful species of invasive parakeet, worldwide. RRPA can cause significant damage to agriculture, including grains, oilseeds, fruits, and ornamental plants. Large flocks of RRPA roost near human infrastructure resulting in concerns about human health and safety (e.g., collisions with aircraft, disease transmission, feces accumulation, and noise complaints). The population growth and spread of RRPA is of conservation concern given the potential impact on …

People With Developmental Disabilities Have Much More Life To Live, Dalton Stevens

Population Health Research Brief Series

On average, adults with any type of developmental disability die 23.5 years before those without a developmental disability. Despite this disadvantage, health care providers, policymakers, and scholars have done little to address or understand the significantly shorter lifespans of people with developmental disabilities. This research brief discusses age-at-death mortality patterns for adults with various types of developmental disabilities.

Monthly Water And Soil Analysis On Trotter’S Creek In Elizabeth, New Jersey And Kean University In The Spring 2019 Semester, Maurizia De Palma

Kean Quest

Urban waterways can easily be affected by pollution, runoff, and leaching, which can have biological, chemical, and economic impacts. Trotter’s Creek, which begins at the Peerless Beverage Company in Union, New Jersey and ends at the Phil Rizzuto Park in Elizabeth, New Jersey, is a local example of an urban waterway currently being impacted by such factors. To assess the overall health of Trotter’s Creek, a qualitative assessment was conducted on soil and water samples that were taken once a month from February to April. The samples were taken upstream at the Peerless Beverage Company, midstream at Kean University, and …

Distribution And Abundance Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Surficial Estuarine Sediment From North Inlet, Sc, Usa, India Briana Gartmon Oct 2019

Distribution And Abundance Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Surficial Estuarine Sediment From North Inlet, Sc, Usa, India Briana Gartmon

Theses and Dissertations

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a ubiquitous coastal organism that causes gastroenteritis (vibriosis) after ingestion of mishandled or undercooked seafood. Cases of vibriosis have increased rapidly in the past decade. V. parahaemolyticus densities have historically been associated with an increase in sea surface water temperatures, but recent shellfish bed closures in fall and winter months in cooler regions (the Baltic Sea, the Pacific NW, and New England) suggest that there may be additional environmental parameters that affect densities of V. parahaemolyticus. The vertical distribution of V. parahaemolyticus was assessed in the pristine North Inlet Estuary (SC, USA). The goal of this …

Oyster Reefs In Northern Gulf Of Mexico Estuaries Harbor Diverse Fish And Decapod Crustacean Assemblages: A Meta-Synthesis, Megan K. La Peyre, Danielle Aguilar Marshall, Lindsay S. Miller, Austin T. Humphries

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Oyster reefs provide habitat for numerous fish and decapod crustacean species that mediate ecosystem functioning and support vibrant fisheries. Recent focus on the restoration of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs stems from this role as a critical ecosystem engineer. Within the shallow estuaries of the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM), the eastern oyster is the dominant reef building organism. This study synthesizes data on fish and decapod crustacean occupancy of oyster reefs across nGoM with the goal of providing management and restoration benchmarks, something that is currently lacking for the region. Relevant data from 23 studies were identified, representing …

Bayesian Model Selection For Spatial Capture–Recapture Models, Soumen Dey, Mohan Delampady, Arjun M. Gopalaswamy Oct 2019

Bayesian Model Selection For Spatial Capture–Recapture Models, Soumen Dey, Mohan Delampady, Arjun M. Gopalaswamy

Journal Articles

A vast amount of ecological knowledge generated over the past two decades has hinged upon the ability of model selection methods to discriminate among various ecological hypotheses. The last decade has seen the rise of Bayesian hierarchical models in ecology. Consequently, commonly used tools, such as the AIC, become largely inapplicable and there appears to be no consensus about a particular model selection tool that can be universally applied. We focus on a specific class of competing Bayesian spatial capture–recapture (SCR) models and apply and evaluate some of the recommended Bayesian model selection tools: (1) Bayes Factor—using (a) Gelfand-Dey and …

Legitimacy In International Dispute Resolution In The Age Of Anti-Globalization, Nationalism, And Isolationism: How Geographical And Legal Cultural Diversity On The International Bench Can Promote Regional And International Cooperation, Alina Ng Boyte

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The article argues that implicit biases, such as availability bias, affect heuristic, and endowment effect, significantly impede international cooperation and effective problem-solving in the global legal system. By addressing these cognitive errors, international legal institutions can foster trust, promote collaboration, and achieve socially just outcomes. The analysis highlights the role of legal frameworks and distributive justice in overcoming these biases, using the example of global efforts to eliminate child labor as a successful case study.

The Impact Of Heterogeneity In A Global Knowledge Commons: Implications For Governance Of The Dna Barcode Commons, Janis Geary, Trish Reay, Tania M. Bubela Oct 2019

The Impact Of Heterogeneity In A Global Knowledge Commons: Implications For Governance Of The Dna Barcode Commons, Janis Geary, Trish Reay, Tania M. Bubela

Office of the Provost

The extent of actor heterogeneity is known to influence the outcomes in natural resource commons, and scholars have recently begun addressed the impact of heterogeneity on knowledge commons creation and sustainability. There is increasing evidence to challenge the dominant theory that heterogeneity is uniformly disadvantageous, but little is known about heterogeneity in knowledge commons. Here, we analyse heterogeneity as it applies to rules for governing a knowledge commons – the DNA barcode commons. DNA barcodes are short, standardized gene regions that can be used to inexpensively identify unknown specimens, and proponents have led international efforts to make DNA barcodes a …

Acetaminophen Protein Adducts In Hospitalized Children Receiving Multiple Doses Of Acetaminophen., Sibo Jiang, Valvanera Vozmediano, Susan M. Abdel-Rahman, Stephan Schmidt, Laura P. James

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Previous reports have questioned the safety of multiple doses of acetaminophen administered to ill children. Acetaminophen protein adducts (adducts) are a biomarker of acetaminophen-induced liver injury and reflect the oxidative metabolism of acetaminophen, a known mechanism in acetaminophen toxicity. In this prospective observational study, we analyzed adduct concentrations in 1034 blood samples obtained from 181 hospitalized children (1 to 18 years inclusive) who received 2 or more doses of acetaminophen. Linear regression analysis showed that serum adduct concentrations increased as a function of the cumulative acetaminophen dose, which could be attributed, in part, to a long half-life of adducts (2.17 …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Most pleurodont lizard families (anoles, iguanas and their relatives), with the exception of the basilisks and casquehead lizards (family Corytophanidae), share homologous XX/XY sex chromosomes, syntenic with chicken chromosome 15. Here, we used a suite of methods (i.e. RADseq, RNAseq and qPCR) to identify corytophanid sex chromosomes for the first time. We reveal that all examined corytophanid species have partially degenerated XX/XY sex chromosomes, syntenic with chicken chromosome 17. Transcriptomic analyses showed that the expression of X-linked genes in the corytophanid, Basiliscus vittatus, is not balanced between the sexes, which is rather exceptional under male heterogamety, and unlike the dosage-balanced …

The Influence Of The Law In American Literature And Culture, Emily Johnson, Steven Hamelman Oct 2019

The Influence Of The Law In American Literature And Culture, Emily Johnson, Steven Hamelman

Honors Theses

This piece explores the relationship between law and its influence within American literature and the overall culture. Themes of discrimination, corruption, greed, advocacy, and incriminating evidence, present in the analyzed texts and films, greatly plays into the American public’s perception of their judicial system. Is it truly the law influencing American literature and culture, or is it the sentiments of the masses influencing the legal field itself? This work aims at analyzing this question, while also making a point to explain what American citizens can do with such influence and knowledge.

Distribution And Dispersal Potential Of The Endemic Tree Loblolly Bay (Gordonia Lasianthus) In The Southeastern United States Coastal Plain And Implications For Conservation In The Context Of Forecast Climate Scenarios., Herrick Hermann Klaus Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Plant communities in the Southeastern United States Coastal Plain constitute a rich assemblage of species from neighboring floristic provinces and include over 1,000 species endemic to the region. Conservation of these unique landscapes requires a better understanding of potential impacts from human activity and a changing climate. As a model species, the endemic tree Loblolly Bay (Gordonia lasianthus) is representative of Carolina Bays, pocosins, and isolated wetland habitats that accentuate Longleaf Pine ecosystems which dominate the focus area. Seed-dispersal events in Loblolly Bay are limited to periods of relatively low humidity primarily during the months of October to December, and …

Early Behavioral And Physiological Markers Of Social Anxiety In Fragile X Syndrome, Conner J. Black Oct 2019

Early Behavioral And Physiological Markers Of Social Anxiety In Fragile X Syndrome, Conner J. Black

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Social Anxiety is diagnosed in approximately 10% of neurotypical children. If left untreated, negative outcomes are highly prevalent later in life. Thus, understanding the earliest features of social anxiety can help to mitigate detrimental outcomes. Fragile X Syndrome, which has a high prevalence of social anxiety, is a genetic syndrome which creates a unique opportunity to study the earliest predictors of social anxiety before formal diagnosis. Fragile X Syndrome presents with intellectual disability and an increased prevalence of maladaptive behaviors. The current study utilized a bio-behavioral approach to study the earliest marker of social anxiety in 12- month-old infants …
