Mechanisms Of Virus Mitigation And Suitability Of Bacteriophages As Surrogates In Drinking Water Treatment By Iron Electrocoagulation, Joe Heffron, Brad Mcdermid, Emily Maher, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Brooke K. Mayer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Emerging water treatment technologies using ferrous and zero-valent iron show promising virus mitigation by both inactivation and adsorption. In this study, iron electrocoagulation was investigated for virus mitigation in drinking water via bench-scale batch experiments. Relative contributions of physical removal and inactivation, as determined by recovery via pH 9.5 beef broth elution, were investigated for three mammalian viruses (adenovirus, echovirus, and feline calicivirus) and four bacteriophage surrogates (fr, MS2, P22, and ΦX174). Though no one bacteriophage exactly represented mitigation of the mammalian viruses in all water matrices, bacteriophage ΦX174 was the only surrogate that showed overall removal comparable to that …

Students’ Expectations Within A Nontraditional College Of Business Classroom, Angela Patrick, Rick Simmons, Russell Calk Oct 2019

Students’ Expectations Within A Nontraditional College Of Business Classroom, Angela Patrick, Rick Simmons, Russell Calk

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Students in a college of business classroom have various expectations regarding the faculty member and the course. If the faculty member fails to meet those expectations, the resulting misalignment can cause misunderstandings and other issues. This study attempts to understand the expectations of nontraditional students to assist faculty in identifying the potential areas of misalignment. Using a series of modified questions from Schmitt, Larsen, Miller, Badawy, Dougherty, Sharma & Benson (2013), this study reports the results of a survey of 152 upper-division undergraduate and graduate students from the college of business at a regional university with a teaching mission. The …

Keep The Cat, Change The Care Pathway: A Transformational Approach To Managing Fel D 1, The Major Cat Allergen, Ebenezer Satyaraj, Harold James Wedner, Jean Bousquet

2010-2019 OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Allergies to cats are the most common animal-origin allergy, and affect approximately 1 in 5 adults worldwide. The prevalence of allergy to furry animals has been increasing, and allergy to cats is a major risk factor for the development of asthma and rhinitis. The diagnosis of cat allergy is now well established. The exact significance of component-resolved diagnosis in the diagnosis of cat allergy remains to be fully understood. Allergen avoidance is effective but often has a psychologic impact. Allergen immunotherapy is not well demonstrated. There is a need for innovative approaches to better manage cat allergens. Next-generation care …

Where To Forage When Afraid: Does Perceived Risk Impair Use Of The Foodscape?, Samantha P.H. Dwinnell, Hall Sawyer, Jill E. Randall, Jeffery L. Beck, Jennifer S. Forbey, Gary L. Fralick, Kevin L. Monteith Oct 2019

Where To Forage When Afraid: Does Perceived Risk Impair Use Of The Foodscape?, Samantha P.H. Dwinnell, Hall Sawyer, Jill E. Randall, Jeffery L. Beck, Jennifer S. Forbey, Gary L. Fralick, Kevin L. Monteith

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The availability and quality of forage on the landscape constitute the foodscape within which animals make behavioral decisions to acquire food. Novel changes to the foodscape, such as human disturbance, can alter behavioral decisions that favor avoidance of perceived risk over food acquisition. Although behavioral changes and population declines often coincide with the introduction of human disturbance, the link(s) between behavior and population trajectory are difficult to elucidate. To identify a pathway by which human disturbance may affect ungulate populations, we tested the Behaviorally Mediated Forage‐Loss Hypothesis, wherein behavioral avoidance is predicted to reduce use of available forage adjacent to …

Aristotle And Habituation: Is Virtue Really Attainable Without God's Help, Roy Michael Mattson Oct 2019

Aristotle And Habituation: Is Virtue Really Attainable Without God's Help, Roy Michael Mattson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

We are by nature moral beings who desire virtue. This fact is borne out by innumerable studies. Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Eudemian Ethics remain among the most influential works on ethics and human moral psychology. Aristotle claims that human beings can develop good character traits and achieve virtue with the appropriate upbringing (what Aristotle called habituation). Much of what Aristotle says about character traits, virtue, and habituation is accepted today and inspires character education. Yet recent results in experimental psychology challenge the notion of character traits and virtue as understood by Aristotle. The challenge is the abundance of evidence showing …

An Analysis Of Marketing And Microenterprise: Does Marketing Have An Impact On These Unique Organizations?, Bruce Alan Morgan Oct 2019

An Analysis Of Marketing And Microenterprise: Does Marketing Have An Impact On These Unique Organizations?, Bruce Alan Morgan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research study was a qualitative, multiple case study on how the implementation of good marketing techniques impacts the sustainability of microenterprises. This is a replicative extension study of prior research that revealed a theme of “promotional activities” correlating to microenterprise sustainability beyond two years (Haynes, 2017). This research extended the prior study by significantly increasing the number of participants (from six to forty), providing heterogeneity regarding lines of business, expanding to a new geography (the Upstate of South Carolina), focusing exquisitely on marketing techniques (as defined by the classical Marketing Mix), and defining sustainability by using both an accepted …

Health-Related Quality-Of-Life Assessment In Dementia: Evidence Of Cross-Cultural Validity In Latin America., K-C Chua, Jr Böhnke, M Prince, S Banerjee Oct 2019

Health-Related Quality-Of-Life Assessment In Dementia: Evidence Of Cross-Cultural Validity In Latin America., K-C Chua, Jr Böhnke, M Prince, S Banerjee

School of Psychology

All health-related quality-of-life (HRQL) measures for dementia have been developed in high-income countries and none were validated for cross-cultural use. Yet, the global majority of people living with dementia reside in low- and middle-income countries. We therefore investigated the measurement invariance of a set of self- and informant-report HRQL measures developed in the United Kingdom when used in Latin America. Self-reported HRQL was obtained using (DEMQOL) at a memory assessment service in the United Kingdom (n = 868) and a population cohort study in Latin America (n = 417). Informant reports were collected using DEMQOL-Proxy at both sites (n = …

The Unconstitutional Prosecution Of Asylum-Seeking Parents Under Trump’S Family Separation, Sergio Garcia Oct 2019

The Unconstitutional Prosecution Of Asylum-Seeking Parents Under Trump’S Family Separation, Sergio Garcia

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

President Donald Trump’s policy of separating families at the border, known as Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy,” was piloted in El Paso, Texas in 2017. Under Trump’s policy, the government separates asylum-seeking parents from their children in order to create “unaccompanied minors” and then prosecute parents. Trump’s policy is standard practice along the nation’s southern border. However, Trump’s prosecution and conviction of asylum–seeking parents violate the constitutional criminal law principles and constitute outrageous government conduct. For example, consider the cases of asylum-seeking parents Elba Luz Dominguez–Portillo, Natividad Zavala–Zavala, Jose Francis Yanes–Mancia, Blanca Nieve Vasquez– Hernandez, and Maynor Alonso Claudino–Lopez (collectively referred …

Eureka, Ca Fishing Community Sustainability Plan, Lisa Wise Consulting, Inc., Humboldt State University

Local Reports and Publications

The Eureka Fishing Community Sustainability Plan (FCSP) is the product of years of planning, hard work, and collaboration among a wide range of interests, led by local commercial and charter fishermen, processors, representatives from the mariculture industry, fishing-related businesses, fishing families, civic leaders, elected officials, City of Eureka staff, academia, business owners and operators, and funding from the federal government.

An FCSP is a document outlined in the federal Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) to address “the social development needs of coastal communities.” The word “Fishing” has been added at the community’s discretion to better represent the focus …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cadmium is one of the widely used heavy metals (HM) in commercial and industrial products and contributes to environmental contamination in an urban setting. In our previous studies, we established that An. gambiae sensu stricto, a vector of malaria, had adapted to HM pollutants in nature despite their proclivity for unpolluted aquatic habitats. We further demonstrated that heavy metal tolerance adaptation process impacts a biological cost to the fitness of the mosquito and potentially involves the induction of specific HM-responsive transcripts and proteins. Here we interrogated differential proteomic profiles of the cadmium tolerant vs. naïve strains of An. gambiae to …

Art And The Ecology Of Leisure, Curtis Carter Oct 2019

Art And The Ecology Of Leisure, Curtis Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Philosophers, scientists, and artists alike are prone to explore important questions concerning ecology as it relates to the impact of human actions for the future of nature and human civilizations. The main focus in this essay is to consider ecological implications of art understood as a form of leisure. Art is of course more than leisure for the artists and other arts professionals, but its personal and societal roles also serve as leisure activities. Both the production of art and its consumption have important ecological implications. Select philosophical (Hegel) and scientific (Escobar) concerning art and nature provide a context for …

Access To Law Or Access To Lawyers? Master's Programs In The Public Educational Mission Of Law Schools, Mark Burge Oct 2019

Access To Law Or Access To Lawyers? Master's Programs In The Public Educational Mission Of Law Schools, Mark Burge

Faculty Scholarship

The general decline in juris doctor (“J.D.”) law school applicants and enrollment over the last decade has coincided with the rise of a new breed of law degree. Whether known as a master of jurisprudence, juris master, master of legal studies, or other names, these graduate degrees all have a target audience in common: adult professionals who neither are nor seek to become practicing attorneys. Inside legal academia and among the practicing bar, these degrees have been accompanied by expressed concerns that they detract from the traditional core public mission of law schools—educating lawyers. This Article argues that non-lawyer master’s …

Benefits And Drawbacks Of A Bilingual Education When Comparing It To A Monolingual Education, Ga Yun Lee Oct 2019

Benefits And Drawbacks Of A Bilingual Education When Comparing It To A Monolingual Education, Ga Yun Lee

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to understand what parents think of as benefits and drawbacks of bilingual or monolingual education, depending on their linguistic choices for their child. This study also aims to support parents who are struggling to make a decision for their child and students who do not have motivation to learn English. To answer my research question, “What are the benefits and drawbacks of a bilingual education when it comparing it to monolingual education?” I distributed a survey to six participants who are sending their child to a bilingual education setting and five participants sending their …

Collagenase Assay, My Lien Dao Oct 2019

Collagenase Assay, My Lien Dao

USF Patents

A method of measuring soluble or insoluble cell or tissue-associated collagenase activity. The substrate includes native collagen fibrils that were stained with COOMASSIE Brilliant Blue R-250. Incubation with collagenase can be observed in real-time by the generation of digested smaller fragments. The degraded blue fragments are obtained by filtration through class fibers, onto which intact collagen fibrils are retained. The filtrate containing the blue collagen fragments is incubated with a detergent in order to extract the blue dye, and the mixture is centrifuged in order to separate the dye in the supernatant from the pellet, which contains de-stained collagen fragments …

Myofascial Release, Colin S. Hetherington Oct 2019

Myofascial Release, Colin S. Hetherington

Student Publications

Fascia represents an intricate system of connective tissue that permeates throughout the human body. Its matrix of continuous fibers support, protect, divide and suspend both superficial and deep anatomical structures. While once thought to be a passive mesh network, new evidence suggests fascia is much more complicated. Now recognized as an active physiological component of the human body, myofascial health and function has been given much attention clinically. Of the techniques aimed to treat and restore fascial structure and function, myofascial release has been found to promote stability, increase range of motion and most importantly alleviate musculoskeletal pain. This form …

Today's Fibromyalgia, Mckenzie K. Glennon Oct 2019

Today's Fibromyalgia, Mckenzie K. Glennon

Student Publications

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal disorder which results in widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and emotional distress (CDC, 2017). It is also associated with abnormal pain processing. About 2% of US adults have Fibromyalgia, and the disease is more common in middle-aged women, particularly those who have other illnesses like Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis (CDC, 2017). The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but it is likely a combination of genetics, infections and physical and emotional trauma. Since the exact cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, treatment options vary. Medication, stress management techniques and an exercise plan are all examples …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Effect On Wound Healing And Traumatic Brain Injuries, Sara L. Seuffert Oct 2019

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Effect On Wound Healing And Traumatic Brain Injuries, Sara L. Seuffert

Student Publications

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a new form of treatment being used to heal and help improve symptoms of traumatic brain injuries, external wounds, and strokes. HBOT helps to completely saturate hemoglobin with oxygen, which then allows for a larger capacity of oxygen to be delivered to the damaged tissues. Tissue wounds benefit from this HBOT because of the increase in oxygen supply to the damaged area, helping to combat hypoxia, which is preventing proper wound healing. The increase in oxygen allows for an increase in myofibroblast differentiation to allow the healing process to continue. HBOT has also proven to increase …

Healthcare: A Universal Human Right Or White Privilege?, Nicole E. Heller

Student Publications

It is an undeniable fact that racism has been present in the United States since the beginning of the European colonization of the nation. Structural racism and implicit biases are the modern reality of the African American experience, reflecting years of direct racial targeting, mistreatment and discrimination. Today, there are many examples of deeply rooted racial discrepancies, de facto segregation, and modern acts of colonization. Perhaps one of the most troubling disparities present between African Americans and white Americans is the alarming difference in their experiences with healthcare. After a long history of medical torture, mistreatment, and a denial of …

Acute Systemic Inflammatory Response To Lipopolysaccharide Stimulation In Pigs Divergently Selected For Residual Feed Intake, Haibo Liu, Kristina M. Feye, Yet T. Nguyen, Anoosh Rakhshandeh, Crystal L. Loving, Jack C. M. Sekkers, Nicholas K. Gabler, Christopher K. Tuggle

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Background: It is unclear whether improving feed efficiency by selection for low residual feed intake (RFI) compromises pigs’ immunocompetence. Here, we aimed at investigating whether pig lines divergently selected for RFI had different inflammatory responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure, regarding to clinical presentations and transcriptomic changes in peripheral blood cells.

Results: LPS injection induced acute systemic inflammation in both the low-RFI and high-RFI line (n = 8 per line). At 4 h post injection (hpi), the low-RFI line had a significantly lower (p= 0.0075) mean rectal temperature compared to the high-RFI line. However, no significant differences in complete blood count …
